Negative Simple Past

The negative simple past denies a bounded past event or situation as a whole: نرفتم “I did not go,” ندیدند “they did not see,” تماس نگرفت “he/she did not call.” Build it by putting the negative prefix نـ immediately before the past stem, then adding the ordinary past personal ending.

English uses the auxiliary did not plus a base verb. Persian adds no equivalent of did: the past stem and ending remain inside one finite verb, and نـ negates it directly.

The basic formula

نـ + past stem + personal ending

PositiveNegativeAnalysisMeaning
رفتمنرفتمنـ + رفت + ـمI did not go
دیدیندیدینـ + دید + ـیyou did not see
آمدنیامدنـ + آمد + zerohe/she did not come
خریدیمنخریدیمنـ + خرید + ـیمwe did not buy
شنیدندنشنیدندنـ + شنید + ـندthey did not hear

Before vowel-initial آمد, the negative appears as نیـ in نیامدم، نیامدی، نیامد. This is a regular phonological shape of the negative construction, not a separate tense.

دیروز به کلاس نرفتم، چون بیمار بودم.

diruz be kelâs naraftam, chun bimâr budam.

I didn't go to class yesterday because I was ill. (neutral standard)

پیامت را ندیدم و دیر جواب دادم.

payâm-at râ nadidam-o dir javâb dâdam.

I didn't see your message and replied late. (neutral standard)

مهمان‌ها تا ساعت هشت نیامدند.

mehmân-hâ tâ sâ'at-e hasht niyâmadand.

The guests didn't come by eight. (neutral standard)

💡
Build the positive past first, then add نـ at the left edge of its stem: خریدیم → نخریدیم. Keep the same subject ending.

Spelling and stress

The negative prefix joins the past stem directly: نرفتم، نخوردی، ننوشتند. There is no ordinary space or ZWNJ after نـ. Standard spelling ن رفتم is therefore wrong.

Negation also changes primary stress. In a positive simple past, stress normally falls on the final syllable of the past stem. In a negative form, نَـ attracts primary stress: ná-raftam, ná-didam. The course romanization does not add a stress mark, but careful pronunciation should preserve the contrast.

صبحانه خوردم، اما قهوه نخوردم.

sobhâne khordam, ammâ qahve nakhordam.

I ate breakfast, but I didn't drink coffee. (neutral standard; positive–negative contrast)

گزارش را نوشتم، ولی همان روز نفرستادم.

gozâresh râ neveshtam, vali hamân ruz naferestâdam.

I wrote the report, but I didn't send it that day. (formal-neutral)

The vowel after نـ is not always visible in unpointed spelling. It is generally na- in these simple past negatives, while نیامد has the established niy- sequence before آمد.

Compound verbs: negate the light verb

In a compound predicate, the nonverbal element stays unchanged and نـ attaches to the past stem of the light verb:

Compound infinitivePositive pastNegative past
کار کردنکار کردمکار نکردم
تماس گرفتنتماس گرفتتماس نگرفت
جواب دادنجواب دادندجواب ندادند
شروع شدنشروع شدشروع نشد

صبح با اداره تماس گرفتم، اما کسی جواب نداد.

sobh bâ edâre tamâs gereftam, ammâ kasi javâb nadâd.

I called the office in the morning, but nobody answered. (neutral standard)

جلسه به‌دلیل قطعی برق شروع نشد.

jalase be-dalil-e qat'i-ye barq shoru' nashod.

The meeting did not start because of the power outage. (formal-neutral)

این هفته اضافه‌کاری نکردیم.

in hafte ezâfe-kâri nakardim.

We didn't work overtime this week. (neutral standard)

Putting the prefix on the noun—نکار کردم—fails because کار is not the finite component. The light verb still carries both negation and agreement.

نرفتم versus نمی‌رفتم

The difference between نـ and نمی‌ is aspectual, not merely stylistic.

The affirmative structure is reviewed on Simple Past Formation; the dedicated Past Continuous with می‌ page develops the ongoing and habitual alternative.

FormView of the pastTypical translation
نرفتمone bounded event did not occurI did not go
نمی‌رفتمongoing action was absent, or a repeated habit did not occurI was not going / I did not use to go

دیشب به مهمانی نرفتم.

dishab be mehmâni naraftam.

I didn't go to the party last night. (one completed opportunity)

وقتی زنگ زدی، به مهمانی نمی‌رفتم؛ در خانه بودم.

vaqti zang zadi, be mehmâni nemi-raftam; dar khâne budam.

When you called, I wasn't going to the party; I was at home. (ongoing-past contrast)

With a habitual time phrase, نمی‌رفتم can mean “I did not use to go”: آن سال جمعه‌ها سر کار نمی‌رفتم. A single named occasion normally selects نرفتم.

💡
Ask whether you are denying a whole past event or describing the inside of an ongoing/repeated past situation. Use نرفتم for the whole-event denial; use نمی‌رفتم for ongoing or habitual background.

Negative words and one finite negative

Persian commonly combines words such as هیچ‌کس “nobody” and هیچ‌وقت “never” with a negative verb. Unlike standard English nobody came, the Persian verb remains negative.

هیچ‌کس نتیجه‌ی مسابقه را حدس نزد.

hich-kas natije-ye mosâbeqe râ hads nazad.

Nobody guessed the result of the match. (neutral standard; negative concord)

آن روز هیچ‌چیز نخریدم.

ân ruz hich-chiz nakharidam.

I didn't buy anything that day. (neutral standard)

This is not two logical negations canceling each other. The negative word and negative finite verb form one negative clause.

A short exchange

چرا دیروز به من زنگ نزدی؟

cherâ diruz be man zang nazadi?

Why didn't you call me yesterday? (careful spoken standard)

گوشی‌ام شارژ نداشت و شماره‌ات را پیدا نکردم.

gushi-am shârzh nadâsht-o shomâre-at râ peydâ nakardam.

My phone had no charge, and I couldn't find your number. (careful spoken standard)

Common Mistakes

1. Separating the negative prefix

❌ من دیروز ن رفتم.

Incorrect spelling — نـ joins directly to the past stem.

✅ من دیروز از خانه بیرون نرفتم.

man diruz az khâne birun naraftam.

I didn't leave the house yesterday.

2. Negating the nonverbal element

❌ دیروز نتماس گرفتم.

Incorrect — in تماس گرفتن, negation belongs on the light verb گرفت.

✅ دیروز با پشتیبانی تماس نگرفتم.

diruz bâ poshtibâni tamâs nagereftam.

I didn't contact support yesterday.

3. Using نمی‌ for a single completed opportunity

❌ دیشب فیلم را نمی‌دیدم.

as ‘I didn't see the film last night’

Incorrect for the intended whole-event denial — نمی‌دیدم describes an ongoing or habitual past situation.

✅ دیشب آن فیلم را ندیدم.

dishab ân film râ nadidam.

I didn't see that film last night.

4. Using the present stem after نـ

❌ من هفته‌ی پیش نروم.

Incorrect for past time — نروم is a present-subjunctive form, not a negative simple past.

✅ من هفته‌ی پیش به سفر نرفتم.

man hafte-ye pish be safar naraftam.

I didn't go on a trip last week.

5. Adding a third-singular ending after the past stem

❌ او به آن پرسش جواب ندادد.

Incorrect — third-person singular simple past has no personal ending after the past stem داد.

✅ او به آن پرسش جواب نداد.

u be ân porsesh javâb nadâd.

He or she didn't answer that question.

Key Takeaways

  • Put نـ directly before the past stem and retain the normal personal ending.
  • Write نرفتم, not ن رفتم or ن‌رفتم.
  • In compound predicates, negate the light verb: تماس نگرفتم، کار نکردیم.
  • Use نرفتم for a bounded event that did not occur; use نمی‌رفتم for ongoing or habitual past negation.
  • Negative words such as هیچ‌کس normally co-occur with a negative finite verb.
