Demonstratives این and آن

Persian این in means “this” or “these,” and آن ân means “that” or “those.” Before a noun they are invariant determiners: این کتاب “this book,” این کتاب‌ها “these books,” آن خانه “that house,” آن خانه‌ها “those houses.” The noun carries plurality; the demonstrative does not change.

These words identify a referent that the speaker treats as accessible. Physical distance is the basic contrast—این proximal, آن distal—but conversation also uses them for time, earlier discourse, and contrasting alternatives. Persian has no separate words equivalent to English these and those in the determiner position.

The basic position: demonstrative before noun

Unlike ordinary Persian adjectives, این and آن come before the noun and take no ezâfe. If an adjective follows the noun, ezâfe begins after the noun, not after the demonstrative.

FunctionPersianReadingEnglish
proximal singularاین کتابin ketâbthis book
distal singularآن کتابân ketâbthat book
proximal pluralاین کتاب‌هاin ketâb-hâthese books
distal pluralآن کتاب‌هاân ketâb-hâthose books
demonstrative + noun + adjectiveاین کتاب قدیمیin ketâb-e ghadimithis old book

این کتاب مال من است.

in ketâb mâl-e man ast.

This book is mine.

آن خانه حیاط بزرگی دارد.

ân khâne hayât-e bozorgi dârad.

That house has a large yard.

این کیف سبک برای سفر مناسب است.

in keyf-e sabok barâ-ye safar monâseb ast.

This light bag is suitable for travel.

In the last example, این directly determines کیف; invisible -e after کیف links سبک. There is no sound between این and کیف.

💡
Demonstratives are an important exception to the “modifier after noun” pattern: این/آن + noun first, then ordinary ezâfe modifiers after the noun.

Proximal این and distal آن

Use این for something presented as near the speaker, currently held, pointed to, or immediately under discussion. Use آن for something farther away or mentally more remote.

این صندلی راحت‌تر است.

in sandali râhat-tar ast.

This chair is more comfortable.

آن صندلی کنار پنجره خالی است.

ân sandali-ye kenâr-e panjare khâli ast.

That chair beside the window is empty.

Distance is chosen from the speaker's perspective, not measured in meters. Someone can call a remembered time آن روز “that day,” while calling the point currently being explained این نکته “this point.”

آن روز هوا خیلی گرم بود.

ân ruz havâ kheyli garm bud.

That day the weather was very hot.

این نکته برای امتحان مهم است.

in nokte barâ-ye emtehân mohem ast.

This point is important for the exam.

💡
Think in terms of attention as well as distance. این brings a referent into the speaker's current focus; آن points away from that center or back to an established one.

The determiner does not become plural

Before plural nouns, keep این and آن unchanged and add the plural marker to the noun: این دانشجوها, آن پنجره‌ها. Formal vocabulary may select other plural formations, but the demonstrative rule is the same.

این کتاب‌ها برای کتابخانه است.

in ketâb-hâ barâ-ye ketâbkhâne ast.

These books are for the library.

آن درخت‌ها در بهار شکوفه می‌دهند.

ân derakht-hâ dar bahâr shekufe mi-dahand.

Those trees blossom in spring.

این کتاب‌های قدیمی را فروختیم.

in ketâb-hâ-ye ghadimi râ forukhtim.

We sold these old books.

The third noun phrase has a clear order: این + کتاب‌ها + ezâfe + قدیمی + را. Demonstrative, plural suffix, adjective, and object marker each occupy a different layer.

Standalone pronouns

Without a following noun, این and آن can mean “this one/this” and “that one/that.” They can be subjects or objects. No dummy word equivalent to English one is required.

این بهتر است.

in behtar ast.

This one is better.

آن را نمی‌خواهم.

ân râ nemi-khâham.

I don't want that one.

این چیست؟

in chist?

What is this?

Plural standalone pronouns are normally این‌ها “these/these people or things” and آن‌ها “those/they,” with ZWNJ. Their broader behavior belongs on the plural-demonstrative page.

این‌ها تازه‌اند، ولی آن‌ها قدیمی‌اند.

in-hâ tâze-and, vali ân-hâ ghadimi-and.

These are new, but those are old.

Do not put این‌ها directly before a separately pluralized noun to mean “these books.” That would confuse a standalone plural pronoun with an invariant determiner.

Demonstratives and definiteness

Persian has no article slot corresponding exactly to English the. این کتاب is identifiable because the speaker points to or activates a particular book. A bare کتاب can be definite or nonspecific depending on discourse, and یک کتاب introduces “a/one book.” Demonstratives are one resource in this larger reference system, not a translation of the.

یک کتاب روی میز بود؛ این کتاب جلد آبی داشت.

yek ketâb ru-ye miz bud; in ketâb jeld-e âbi dâsht.

There was a book on the table; this book had a blue cover.

The first clause introduces a book with یک. The second points back to it with این. English might prefer “the book” in the second clause, but Persian chooses a demonstrative when active pointing or contrast is useful.

Demonstratives and specific objects

A direct object identified by این or آن is normally specific and therefore takes را after the complete noun phrase.

این کلید را بردار.

in kelid râ bardâr.

Take this key.

آن پیام را دوباره بخوان.

ân payâm râ dubâre bekhân.

Read that message again.

را does not attach to the demonstrative alone and does not interrupt an ezâfe phrase. It follows the noun and all its modifiers.

Written standard and Tehran conversation

In (informal, regional: Tehran) speech, آن commonly becomes اون un. Standard writing and careful speech retain آن. The proximal این remains in, though connected speech can reduce its timing.

اون کتاب رو بده به من.

un ketâb ro bede be man.

Give me that book. (informal, regional: Tehran)

آن کتاب را به من بدهید.

ân ketâb râ be man bedahid.

Give me that book. (careful standard)

Both are valid in their stated registers. Do not mix اون into a neutral formal report unless speech is being represented.

A short conversation

این فنجان برای شماست یا آن فنجان؟

in fenjân barâ-ye shomâst yâ ân fenjân?

Is this cup for you or that cup?

این برای من است؛ آن را کنار پنجره بگذارید.

in barâ-ye man ast; ân râ kenâr-e panjare begzârid.

This one is for me; put that one beside the window.

The first speaker uses both words as determiners; the reply uses both independently as pronouns.

Contrast is often more important than literal distance

A speaker may choose این and آن while two objects are equally near: the words divide the visible scene into a current choice and an alternative. Pointing, gaze, and earlier mention tell the listener which object is intended. This is why switching demonstratives can correct a misunderstanding without moving anything.

In a story, آن often retrieves a more remote time or situation, while این presents a conclusion as immediately relevant: آن روز “that day,” but این نتیجه “this result.” English behaves similarly, yet the preferred demonstrative need not match in every translation. Learn the speaker's viewpoint rather than replacing English words one for one.

Standalone demonstratives referring to people require pragmatic care. این آقا “this gentleman” and آن خانم “that lady” can identify someone politely in a practical setting. Bare این used for a person may sound dismissive because it treats the person like an object under selection. Use a name, title, or human noun when respect matters.

The noun can be omitted only when the referent is genuinely recoverable. In a shop, این را می‌خواهم is clear while the speaker points. In a telephone conversation with several possible items, the same sentence may be underinformative. Demonstratives direct attention; they do not supply descriptive content that the context lacks.

Finally, demonstrative choice can be contrastive without being emphatic. Normal این کتاب does not mean “THIS book!” Stress may add correction or insistence, but the grammar itself simply identifies a referent. Keeping deixis separate from emotional emphasis prevents exaggerated pronunciation.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting the demonstrative after the noun

❌ کتاب این روی میز است.

Incorrect neutral order — demonstrative این precedes the noun.

✅ این کتاب روی میز است.

in ketâb ru-ye miz ast.

This book is on the table.

2. Pronouncing ezâfe after the demonstrative

❌ این کتاب تازه

in-e ketâb-e tâze

Incorrect — no ezâfe links این to کتاب; the only link is after کتاب.

✅ این کتاب تازه را امروز خریدم.

in ketâb-e tâze râ emruz kharidam.

I bought this new book today.

3. Using a plural pronoun as a determiner

❌ این‌ها کتاب‌ها سنگین هستند.

Incorrect for ‘these books are heavy’ — before a noun, use invariant این.

✅ این کتاب‌ها سنگین هستند.

in ketâb-hâ sangin hastand.

These books are heavy.

4. Omitting را from an identified direct object

❌ این کتاب می‌خواهم.

Incorrect ordinary reading for the specific object ‘this book’ — the complete object takes را.

✅ این کتاب را می‌خواهم.

in ketâb râ mi-khâham.

I want this book.

5. Adding an English article pattern

❌ یک این خانه را دیدم.

Incorrect for ‘I saw this house’ — demonstrative این already identifies the referent and stands directly before خانه.

✅ آن خانه‌ی قدیمی را از نزدیک دیدم.

ân khâne-ye ghadimi râ az nazdik didam.

I saw that old house up close.

Key Takeaways

  • این and آن precede the noun without ezâfe and remain unchanged before plural nouns.
  • Proximal/distal meaning extends from physical space to time and discourse attention.
  • Without a noun, they function as pronouns; plural standalone forms are این‌ها and آن‌ها.
  • A demonstrative helps identify a referent but is not a Persian version of the English definite article.
  • Specific direct objects headed by demonstratives normally take را after the complete phrase.
