Approximate and Vague Quantifiers

Persian distinguishes several ways of avoiding an exact quantity. حدود صد نفر hodud-e sad nafar gives an estimate around one hundred; تقریبا صد نفر taqriban sad nafar says “approximately one hundred”; نزدیک به صد نفر nazdik be sad nafar presents the number as close to one hundred; چندین نفر chandin nafar means “several people” without proposing an exact center.

These expressions differ in syntax as well as nuance. حدود is a noun that normally links to the quantity with ezâfe, تقریبا is an adverb, نزدیک به is a complex prepositional expression, and چندین directly determines a singular noun. Their position shows what part of the sentence is being approximated.

For number-building and ranges, continue to Approximation with حدود and تقریباً. This page focuses on placement, meaning, and scope.

حدود صد نفر در مراسم شرکت کردند.

hodud-e sad nafar dar marâsem sherkat kardand.

Around one hundred people attended the ceremony.

تقریبا صد نفر در سالن بودند.

taqriban sad nafar dar sâlon budand.

Approximately one hundred people were in the hall.

نزدیک به صد نفر ثبت‌نام کرده‌اند.

nazdik be sad nafar sabt-nâm karde-and.

Close to one hundred people have registered.

The three estimates can describe similar realities, but they present them differently. حدود packages a range, تقریبا qualifies numerical accuracy, and نزدیک به highlights proximity to a threshold.

💡
Choose the expression for the evidential job. Use تقریبا for a rounded calculation, حدود for a bounded estimate, and نزدیک به when closeness to the named value matters.

As an approximator, حدود is normally pronounced hodud-e before the quantity even though consonant-final ezâfe is not written: حدود سه ساعت, حدود پنجاه کیلومتر. It can quantify numbers, measures, prices, and durations.

جلسه حدود سه ساعت طول کشید.

jalase hodud-e se sâ'at tul keshid.

The meeting lasted about three hours.

فاصله‌ی دو شهر حدود پنجاه کیلومتر است.

fâsele-ye do shahr hodud-e panjâh kilometr ast.

The distance between the two cities is about fifty kilometers.

Do not confuse approximating حدود with the lexical plural “limits/boundaries,” as in حدود کشور hodud-e keshvar. The same ezâfe is present, but the meaning comes from context.

تقریبا is an adverb

تقریبا stands directly before the quantity or expression it approximates and takes no ezâfe. In this guide's unpointed targets it appears as تقریبا; spokenForm writes تَقْرِیباً to force its fixed Iranian Persian -an ending. That lexicalized ending is not productive Arabic case marking. The adverb can also approximate totality, completion, or frequency rather than a numeral.

تقریبا همه‌ی دانشجویان پاسخ دادند.

taqriban hame-ye dâneshjuyân pâsokh dâdand.

Almost all the students answered.

کار تقریبا تمام شده است.

kâr taqriban tamâm shode ast.

The work is almost finished.

The first approximates همه; the second approximates completion. Translating both mechanically as “about” can produce unnatural English, but the Persian scope remains transparent from placement.

نزدیک به highlights a threshold

نزدیک به literally organizes a relation of nearness and is common in reports that compare a value with a salient round number or limit. It often suggests “nearly,” though context need not mathematically guarantee that the actual value lies below the target.

هزینه‌ی تعمیر نزدیک به ده میلیون تومان شد.

hazine-ye ta'mir nazdik be dah milyon tumân shod.

The repair cost came to nearly ten million tomans.

نزدیک به نیمی از شرکت‌کنندگان زن بودند.

nazdik be nimi az sherkat-konandegân zan budand.

Close to half of the participants were women.

The complement of به can be a numeral phrase or a partitive quantity. No ezâfe is inserted after به.

چندین gives vague plurality

چندین directly precedes a singular noun: چندین کتاب, چندین بار, چندین دلیل. It generally suggests more than a casual چند “a few/some” and is common in written or emphatic speech, but it does not encode a fixed minimum.

چندین پژوهش این نتیجه را تأیید کرده‌اند.

chandin pazhuhesh in natije râ ta'yid karde-and.

Several studies have confirmed this result. (academic)

چندین بار با او تماس گرفتم.

chandin bâr bâ u tamâs gereftam.

I called her several times.

The noun remains singular after چندین even though the referent is plural. Plural پژوهش‌ها would shift away from the basic direct quantifier pattern.

💡
Vague does not mean careless. چندین asserts a plurality while withholding its size; حدود صد proposes a numerical center with uncertain edges.

Conversational number pairs

Spoken Persian can place nearby numbers side by side to give a loose interval: ده دوازده نفر, هفت هشت دقیقه. There is normally no و between them in this approximating construction. It is (informal/conversational) and should be replaced by حدود or an explicit range in technical prose.

ده دوازده نفر هنوز بیرون منتظرند.

dah davâzdah nafar hanuz birun montazer-and.

Ten or twelve people are still waiting outside. (conversational)

هفت هشت دقیقه‌ی دیگر می‌رسم.

haft hasht daqiqe-ye digar mi-rasam.

I'll arrive in another seven or eight minutes. (conversational)

Exact interval writing such as “between seven and eight” makes different commitments and belongs in contexts where endpoints matter.

Scope follows position

Move the approximator and its scope can change. تقریبا سه ساعت کار کرد estimates the duration. سه ساعت تقریبا بی‌وقفه کار کرد makes تقریبا qualify “without interruption,” though that order is heavier. Keep the approximator next to the constituent whose precision you are weakening.

او تقریبا سه ساعت بی‌وقفه کار کرد.

u taqriban se sâ'at bi-vaqfe kâr kard.

She worked without interruption for approximately three hours.

او سه ساعت تقریبا بی‌وقفه کار کرد.

u se sâ'at taqriban bi-vaqfe kâr kard.

She worked for three hours, almost without interruption. (marked but possible scope)

The second is grammatically possible but stylistically awkward; a formal editor would likely rewrite it as an explicit contrast.

A short planning exchange

حدود چند نفر برای کارگاه می‌آیند؟

hodud-e chand nafar barâ-ye kârgâh mi-âyand?

Roughly how many people are coming to the workshop?

تقریبا سی نفر؛ شاید هم نزدیک به چهل نفر.

taqriban si nafar; shâyad ham nazdik be chehel nafar.

About thirty; perhaps even close to forty.

The reply honestly revises the estimated center rather than presenting a vague word as an exact count.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting ezâfe after حدود

❌ حدود سه ساعت

hodud se sâ'at

Incorrect standard reading — approximating حدود carries ezâfe before the quantity.

✅ سفر حدود سه ساعت طول کشید.

safar hodud-e se sâ'at tul keshid.

The trip took about three hours.

2. Adding ezâfe after the adverb تقریبا

❌ تقریبا پنجاه نفر

taqriban-e panjâh nafar

Incorrect — تقریبا is an adverb and does not host ezâfe here.

✅ تقریبا پنجاه نفر پاسخ دادند.

taqriban panjâh nafar pâsokh dâdand.

Approximately fifty people responded.

3. Pluralizing after چندین

❌ چندین دلیل‌ها مطرح شد.

Incorrect direct quantifier pattern — the noun remains singular after چندین.

✅ چندین دلیل مطرح شد.

chandin dalil matrah shod.

Several reasons were raised.

4. Putting the approximation after the noun phrase

❌ صد نفر حدود در مراسم بودند.

Incorrect order — حدود precedes and links to the quantity it approximates.

✅ حدود صد نفر در مراسم بودند.

hodud-e sad nafar dar marâsem budand.

Around one hundred people were at the ceremony.

5. Combining incompatible approximation frames

Strings such as تقریبا حدود نزدیک به صد نفر are interpretable, but stacking three near-synonymous approximators without separate scopes is needlessly overloaded. Choose one frame in edited prose.

✅ نزدیک به صد نفر برای برنامه آمدند.

nazdik be sad nafar barâ-ye barnâme âmadand.

Nearly one hundred people came for the program.

Key Takeaways

  • حدود takes ezâfe, تقریبا is an adverb, and نزدیک به introduces its quantity with به.
  • چندین expresses vague plurality and directly precedes a singular noun.
  • Conversational number pairs such as ده دوازده give a loose range without و.
  • Place an approximator next to the constituent whose precision it weakens.
  • Approximation changes evidential commitment, not the singular-after-number rule.
