In a Persian compound predicate, negation and mood are visibly marked on the light verb: کار نمیکنم “I do not work,” تصمیم نگرفتم “I did not decide,” امیدوارم تماس بگیرد “I hope she contacts [them],” and ممکن است جواب ندهد “he may not answer.” The nonverbal element remains unchanged.
This placement reflects the division of labor inside the predicate. کار، تصمیم، تماس، جواب identify the lexical event, while کردن، گرفتن، دادن carry tense, mood, negation, and person. The negative marker attaches to one written word, but its semantic scope normally covers the whole compound.
The placement map
| Predicate | Negative present | Negative past | Affirmative subjunctive | Negative subjunctive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
The imperfective negative is a single prefixed form written with a ZWNJ: نمیکنم، نمیگیرم، نمیدهم. In the simple past and negative subjunctive, bare نـ attaches directly: نکردم، نگیرم، ندهم. It never attaches to the nominal component.
روزهای تعطیل ایمیل کاری را جواب نمیدهم.
ruz-hâ-ye ta'til imeyl-e kâri râ javâb nemi-daham.
I do not answer work email on holidays. (neutral standard; negative present)
دیروز با شرکت تماس نگرفتم چون شماره را پیدا نکردم.
diruz bâ sherkat tamâs na-gereftam chun shomâre râ peydâ na-kardam.
I did not contact the company yesterday because I could not find the number. (neutral standard; negative past)
هنوز دربارهی این پیشنهاد تصمیم نگرفتهایم.
hanuz darbâre-ye in pishnehâd tasmim nagerefte-im.
We have not yet decided about this proposal. (formal-neutral; negative perfect)
For the tense system itself, review Negative Present. The rule here is specifically where those markers land inside a compound.
Affirmative بـ depends on the light verb
Affirmative subjunctive بـ normally appears on simple light verbs such as گرفتن، دادن، زدن، خوردن: تصمیم بگیرم، اجازه بدهد، تلفن بزند، زمین بخورد. It comes after the nonverbal element and attaches directly to the present stem.
باید تا عصر تصمیم بگیریم و به همه خبر بدهیم.
bâyad tâ asr tasmim be-girim va be hame khabar be-dahim.
We must decide by the afternoon and inform everyone. (neutral standard; two affirmative subjunctives)
ممکن است فردا به شما تلفن بزنند.
momken ast fardâ be shomâ telefon be-zanand.
They may call you tomorrow. (neutral standard; زدن subjunctive)
Compounds with کردن behave differently in neutral modern Persian: کار کنم، صحبت کند، بررسی کنیم normally omit affirmative بـ. کار بکنم and نگاه بکن occur, especially with emphasis in conversation (informal/emphatic), but they are not the default forms to insert mechanically into every compound. Compounds with شدن allow both بشود and prefixless شود, with the shorter form especially common in careful writing.
بهتر است پیش از خرید کمی تحقیق کنید.
behtar ast pish az kharid kami tahqiq konid.
It is better to do a little research before buying. (neutral standard; کردن compound without affirmative بـ)
ممکن است در ورودی تا ظهر بسته شود.
momken ast dar-e vorudi tâ zohr baste shavad.
The entrance may be closed until noon. (formal-neutral; prefixless شدن compound)
Negative نـ replaces affirmative بـ
In a negative subjunctive or negative imperative, نـ occupies the prefix position; it does not stack outside بـ. Thus بگیرم becomes نگیرم, بدهم becomes ندهم, and بزنم becomes نزنم. Forms such as نبگیرم or نبدهد contain two competing prefixes and are impossible in contemporary standard Persian.
امیدوارم تصمیم عجولانه نگیرید.
omidvâr-am tasmim-e ajulâne na-girid.
I hope you do not make a hasty decision. (polite standard; negative subjunctive)
مراقب باش به شیشه ضربه نزنی.
morâqeb bâsh be shishe zarbe na-zani.
Be careful not to hit the glass. (familiar singular; negative subjunctive)
لطفا تا پایان جلسه از کسی عکس نگیرید.
lotfan tâ pâyân-e jalse az kasi aks na-girid.
Please do not photograph anyone until the meeting ends. (polite/formal negative imperative)
In the indicative, نمی is not a combination of the same subjunctive نـ plus an independently movable word. It is the negative imperfective prefix and remains one orthographic unit before the light verb.
Nominal stability does not mean absolute immobility
The nonverbal member does not change for tense or mood: تماس remains تماس in تماس گرفتم، تماس نمیگیرم، تماس بگیرم، تماس نگیرم. It may nevertheless host an object clitic in licensed constructions, as in دعوتش نکن “do not invite him/her.” That clitic expresses an argument; it does not conjugate دعوت.
اگر مطمئن نیستی، هنوز دعوتش نکن.
agar motma'en nisti, hanuz da'vat-ash nakon.
If you are not sure, do not invite them yet. (neutral conversation; object clitic on the nonverbal member)
Scope: not deciding versus deciding not to
The location of negation determines which event is denied. تصمیم نگرفتم بروم negates the decision: no decision to go was made. تصمیم گرفتم نروم affirms the decision but places negation on the chosen action: the decision was not to go.
تصمیم نگرفتم استعفا بدهم؛ فقط گفتم باید فکر کنم.
tasmim na-gereftam este'fâ be-daham; faqat goftam bâyad fekr konam.
I did not decide to resign; I only said I needed to think. (neutral; main compound negated)
تصمیم گرفتم استعفا ندهم و یک ماه دیگر صبر کنم.
tasmim gereftam este'fâ na-daham va yek mâh-e digar sabr konam.
I decided not to resign and to wait another month. (neutral; embedded action negated)
The same contrast appears with سعی کردن: سعی نکرد تماس بگیرد “did not try to contact” versus سعی کرد تماس نگیرد “tried not to make contact.” English often places not before an infinitive; Persian reveals scope through the finite verb that carries نـ.
Tehran speech and a short exchange
Tehran speech reduces endings in forms such as کار نمیکنه، تصمیم نمیگیره (informal, regional: Tehran) but keeps negation on the light verb. Familiar singular commands such as جواب نده، تماس نگیر have the same surface forms in standard and colloquial Persian. Informal spelling may omit the ZWNJ in messages, but edited Persian retains it in نمیکنه، نمیگیره.
— چرا جوابش رو نمیدی؟ — چون نمیخوام بحث شروع بشه.
— cherâ javâb-ash ro nemi-di? — chun nemi-khâm bahs shoru' be-she.
— Why aren’t you answering them? — Because I don’t want an argument to start. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Moving negation onto the nominal element
❌ من ناکار میکنم.
Incorrect — predicate negation attaches to the light verb, not to کار.
✅ من پنجشنبهها کار نمیکنم.
man panjshanbe-hâ kâr nemi-konam.
I do not work on Thursdays.
2. Placing نـ between می and the stem
❌ امروز کار مینکنم.
Incorrect — negative present uses the single prefix نمی before کن.
✅ امروز در خانه کار نمیکنم.
emruz dar khâne kâr nemi-konam.
I am not working at home today.
3. Stacking negative نـ with affirmative بـ
❌ بهتر است فعلا تصمیم نبگیری.
Incorrect — negative نـ replaces affirmative بـ before stem گیر.
✅ بهتر است فعلا تصمیم نگیری.
behtar ast fe'lan tasmim na-giri.
It is better not to decide for now.
4. Using negative indicative under a clear subjunctive licenser
❌ امیدوارم تا نیمهشب تماس نمیگیرد.
Incorrect — the hoped-for non-event requires negative subjunctive نگیرد.
✅ امیدوارم تا نیمهشب تماس نگیرد.
omidvâr-am tâ nime-shab tamâs na-girad.
I hope they do not call before midnight.
Key Takeaways
- Put نمی or نـ on the light verb; the nonverbal member stays lexically stable.
- Affirmative بـ appears in تصمیم بگیرم، جواب بدهم، حرف بزنم but is normally absent in neutral کار کنم.
- Negative نـ replaces affirmative بـ: نگیرم، ندهم، نزنم.
- The location of negation determines scope: تصمیم نگرفتم بروم differs from تصمیم گرفتم نروم.
- Tehran reductions preserve the same structure even when endings and stems are shortened.
