Prefix Ordering in Negative Verbs

Persian negation is not a free word like English not. The negative element نـ belongs inside the finite verb complex, and its position follows a stable hierarchy. In نمی‌نویسم “I do not write,” it precedes imperfective می‌; in ننوشتم “I did not write,” it attaches directly to the past stem; and in برنمی‌گردم “I do not return,” the lexical preverb برـ remains outside it.

These patterns become much easier once the verb is treated as ordered slots rather than as a single memorized word. The central order is lexical preverb + negation + aspect or stem + person ending. Some tense and mood markers change which slots are available, but می‌نـ is never the neutral modern order.

The basic negative slot

When imperfective می‌ is present, negative نـ comes first and the spelling is نمی‌ with a ZWNJ before the stem. Without می‌, نـ attaches directly to the stem. Its ordinary pronunciation is na- before most simple forms but ne- in نمی‌ـ.

  • infinitive stem

امروز به پیام‌های کاری جواب نمی‌دهم.

emruz be payâm-hâ-ye kâri javâb ne-mi-daham.

I am not answering work messages today. (neutral standard)

آن سال هنوز فارسی نمی‌خواندم.

ân sâl hanuz fârsi ne-mi-khândam.

That year I was not studying Persian yet. (neutral standard; past imperfective)

دیشب ایمیل را ننوشتم؛ فقط پیش‌نویسش را آماده کردم.

dishab imeyl râ na-neveshtam; faqat pish-nevis-ash râ âmâde kardam.

I did not write the email last night; I only prepared its draft. (neutral standard; simple past)

The two written ن letters in ننوشتم are not a typo: the first is the negative prefix, and the second begins the past stem نوشتـ. Likewise, ننوشته‌ام consists of negative نـ plus نوشته‌ام.

💡
Find می‌ first. If it is present, place negation immediately before it: نمی‌ـ. If it is absent, attach نـ to the finite stem or auxiliary selected by the construction.

Why ب disappears in negative subjunctives and imperatives

Affirmative subjunctives and imperatives often contain بـ: بنویسم “that I write,” بنویس “write!” Negative نـ occupies the same mood-prefix region and replaces بـ. Persian therefore says ننویسم and ننویس, not forms containing both prefixes.

امیدوارم چیزی را اشتباه ننویسم.

omidvâr-am chizi râ eshtebâh na-nevisam.

I hope I do not write anything incorrectly. (neutral standard; negative subjunctive)

نشانی خانه را اینجا ننویس.

neshâni-ye khâne râ injâ na-nevis.

Do not write the home address here. (neutral standard; negative imperative)

The same replacement is visible with other verbs: بخواند → نخواند, بگیرد → نگیرد, بگو → نگو. The exact stem may be irregular, but the prefix logic remains predictable. See Negative Present Subjunctive for the full mood system.

Lexical preverbs remain outside negation

Prefixed verbs such as برگشتن “to return” and درآمدن “to come out” contain a directional or lexical element before the stem. With a true bound preverb, negation follows that element: برنمی‌گردم, برنگشتم, برنگرد. Thus the expanded order is:

preverb + نـ + می‌ (when present) + stem + ending

امشب دیر به خانه برنمی‌گردم.

emshab dir be khâne bar-ne-mi-gardam.

I am not coming home late tonight. (neutral standard; برـ precedes نمی‌ـ)

وقتی باران شروع شد از نیمه‌ی راه برنگشتیم.

vaqti bârân shoru' shod az nime-ye râh bar-na-gashtim.

When it began to rain, we did not turn back halfway. (neutral standard; simple past)

اگر خسته شدی، تنها برنگرد.

agar khaste shodi, tanhâ bar-na-gard.

If you get tired, do not come back alone. (neutral standard; negative imperative)

This is a real difficulty: learners must know whether an element is a bound preverb or the separate nonverbal part of a compound verb. برگشتن behaves as a prefixed simple verb. By contrast, تصمیم گرفتن “to decide” and باز کردن “to open” are compound verbs in which تصمیم or باز is written separately from the inflected light verb.

Negation in compound verbs

In a compound light-verb construction, the nonverbal element stays where it is, and the negative prefix attaches to the finite light verb: تصمیم نمی‌گیرم, کار نکردم, پاسخ نداده‌ام. English speakers sometimes put a free equivalent of not before the whole expression, but Persian has no such independent negator here.

تا جواب دانشگاه نیاید تصمیم نمی‌گیرم.

tâ javâb-e dâneshgâh na-yâyad tasmim ne-mi-giram.

I will not decide until the university's answer arrives. (neutral standard)

دیروز روی این پرونده کار نکردیم.

diruz ru-ye in parvande kâr na-kardim.

We did not work on this case yesterday. (neutral standard)

هنوز به درخواست من پاسخ نداده‌اند.

hanuz be darkhâst-e man pâsokh na-dâde-and.

They have not responded to my request yet. (formal-neutral; negative present perfect)

💡
Locate the component selected for negation by the construction. In a light-verb construction, it is the inflected light verb; in the future, it is auxiliary خواستن; in an ordinary perfect, it is the lexical participle—even though the following copula carries person.

Auxiliaries show where finiteness lives

The future makes the principle especially visible. In neutral written Persian, خواهم رفت becomes نخواهم رفت because خواهم carries person and future meaning. The lexical infinitive stem رفت remains unchanged.

فردا در جلسه شرکت نخواهم کرد.

fardâ dar jalase sherkat na-khâham kard.

I will not attend the meeting tomorrow. (formal/written standard; negative future)

In everyday conversation, speakers normally express this future meaning with a present form such as فردا در جلسه شرکت نمی‌کنم. That is a register choice, not a different ordering rule. The copular negative نیستم “I am not” is lexically irregular and must be learned as a paradigm; it is not built by freely inserting نـ into هستم.

Minimal contrast and dialogue

این هفته مقاله را می‌نویسم، اما برای مجله نمی‌فرستم.

in hafte maqâle râ mi-nevisam, ammâ barâ-ye majalle ne-mi-ferestam.

This week I am writing the article, but I am not sending it to the journal. (neutral standard; می‌ versus نمی‌)

— چرا جواب نمی‌دهی؟ — چون هنوز تصمیم نگرفته‌ام.

— cherâ javâb ne-mi-dahi? — chun hanuz tasmim na-gerefte-am.

‘Why aren't you answering?’ ‘Because I haven't decided yet.’ (informal situation; careful-spoken forms)

The negative prefix appears before می‌ in the question and on the participial light verb in the answer. The nonverbal elements جواب and تصمیم do not themselves receive negation.

Common Mistakes

1. Reversing نـ and می‌ـ

❌ من گوشت می‌نخورم.

Incorrect — neutral modern Persian places the negative prefix before می‌ـ.

✅ من غذای خیلی شور نمی‌خورم.

man ghazâ-ye kheyli shur ne-mi-khoram.

I do not eat very salty food.

2. Keeping both بـ and نـ

❌ امیدوارم نبخواند.

Incorrect — negative نـ replaces subjunctive بـ; the two do not stack.

✅ امیدوارم پیام خصوصی را نخواند.

omidvâr-am payâm-e khosusi râ na-khânad.

I hope he or she does not read the private message.

3. Putting negation before a lexical preverb

❌ هیچ‌وقت نبرگرد.

Incorrect for the intended verb برگشتن — bound برـ stays before negative نـ.

✅ امشب دیر برنگرد.

emshab dir bar-na-gard.

Do not come back late tonight.

4. Attaching negation to the nonverbal element

❌ هنوز نتصمیم می‌گیرم.

Incorrect — نـ cannot attach to the noun تصمیم; it must attach to the finite light verb.

✅ هنوز درباره‌ی پیشنهاد تصمیم نمی‌گیرم.

hanuz darbâre-ye pishnehâd tasmim ne-mi-giram.

I am not deciding about the proposal yet.

5. Negating both parts of a future

❌ نخواهم نرفت.

Incorrect for a single neutral negation — the negative future marks نـ on خواهم and leaves رفت unchanged.

✅ امسال به آن همایش نخواهم رفت.

emsâl be ân hamâyesh na-khâham raft.

I will not go to that conference this year. (formal/written standard)

Key Takeaways

  • Before imperfective می‌, negation forms نمی‌ـ; without می‌, نـ attaches to the stem or finite auxiliary.
  • Negative نـ replaces subjunctive or imperative بـ rather than combining with it.
  • A bound lexical preverb stays outside negation: برنمی‌گردم، برنگشتم، برنگرد.
  • In compound verbs, negate the light verb: تصمیم نمی‌گیرم.
  • The impossible neutral order می‌نـ becomes predictable once the prefix slots are visible.
