Core Compounds with خوردن

In شکست خوردن “be defeated,” ضربه خوردن “be struck,” فریب خوردن “be deceived,” and زمین خوردن “fall down,” light verb خوردن presents its subject as affected by an event rather than as a deliberate controller. English often uses a passive or an entirely different verb, but Persian stores a noun plus خوردن as one predicate.

This does not make خوردن a general passive auxiliary. Each combination is lexical: Persian says گول خوردن “be tricked” and کتک خوردن “get beaten,” but a learner cannot attach خوردن to any noun and automatically create “be X-ed.” The family has to be learned member by member.

Only خوردن inflects, using past stem خوردـ and present stem خورـ: شکست خورد، شکست می‌خورد، شکست نخورده است، شکست نخورد. The nonverbal member names the type of adverse event or impact.

تیم میزبان در دقایق آخر شکست خورد.

tim-e mizbân dar daqâyeq-e âkhar shekast khord.

The home team was defeated in the final minutes. (neutral sports register)

در اسباب‌کشی، پایه‌ی میز چند بار ضربه خورد.

dar asbâb-keshi, pâye-ye miz chand bâr zarbe khord.

During the move, the table leg was struck several times. (neutral; affected object as subject)

به تبلیغ دروغ اعتماد کرد و دوباره فریب خورد.

be tabligh-e dorugh e'temâd kard va dubâre farib khord.

He trusted the false advertisement and was deceived again. (neutral standard)

💡
Ask which participant Persian makes the subject. حریف ما را شکست داد presents the winner as agent; ما از حریف شکست خوردیم presents our team as the affected side.

Passive-like meaning without productive passive grammar

The giving/eating pairs reverse perspective lexically. In شکست دادن, the winner is subject and the loser is a direct object. In شکست خوردن, the loser is subject and the winner may be introduced with از. A similar opposition links فریب دادن / فریب خوردن and ضربه زدن / ضربه خوردن.

حریف ما را در بازی رفت شکست داد، اما این بار از ما شکست خورد.

harif mâ râ dar bâzi-ye raft shekast dâd, ammâ in bâr az mâ shekast khord.

Our opponent defeated us in the first leg, but this time lost to us. (sports register; agentive versus affected perspective)

کلاهبردار چند نفر را فریب داد، ولی من فریبش را نخوردم.

kolâhbardâr chand nafar râ farib dâd, vali man farib-ash râ na-khordam.

The fraudster deceived several people, but I did not fall for his trick. (neutral; فریبش is a referential noun phrase in the idiom فریب کسی را خوردن)

The last example reveals genuine flexibility: alongside bare فریب خوردن, Persian has فریب کسی را خوردن “fall for someone's deception,” where the expanded noun phrase takes را. Therefore “the nominal element never takes را” would be false. What remains lexical is the established predicate and its licensed expansions.

The fully productive grammatical passive instead uses a past participle plus شدن, such as نامه فرستاده شد. The lexical/passive distinction is developed on Lexical Passive-like Compounds with خوردن and دیدن.

💡
“Passive-like” describes participant perspective, not a reusable suffix. شکست خوردن is stored vocabulary; it does not license invented combinations such as attaching خوردن to every action noun.

Impact and involuntary events

Several frequent خوردن predicates describe things that happen to the subject without intention: زمین خوردن “fall,” لیز خوردن “slip,” سرما خوردن “catch a cold,” and زنگ خوردن “ring.” The subject may be a person, body part, device, or other affected entity.

جلوی ایستگاه لیز خوردم، ولی زمین نخوردم.

jelow-ye istgâh liz khordam, vali zamin na-khordam.

I slipped in front of the station, but I did not fall. (neutral conversation)

بچه از مدرسه برگشته و ظاهرا سرما خورده است.

bachche az madrese bargashte va zâheran sarmâ khorde ast.

The child has come back from school and apparently caught a cold. (neutral standard)

گوشی‌ام دو بار زنگ خورد، اما شماره را نشناختم.

gushi-am do bâr zang khord, ammâ shomâre râ na-shenâkhtam.

My phone rang twice, but I did not recognize the number. (neutral conversation)

These subjects are not necessarily grammatically passive. گوشی زنگ خورد does not imply an omitted agent who “rang” the phone in the same syntactic way as نامه فرستاده شد implies a sender. It simply uses a lexical intransitive predicate.

Literal collision versus the light-verb family

Independent خوردن also describes collision: توپ به دیوار خورد “the ball hit the wall.” The moving entity is subject, and the surface typically takes به. This meaning helps motivate impact compounds, but the boundary is not a test learners can apply mechanically.

شاخه به شیشه خورد، ولی آن را نشکست.

shâkhe be shishe khord, vali ân râ na-shekast.

The branch hit the window, but did not break it. (neutral; literal collision)

بچه توپ را محکم به دیوار زد و توپ به پنجره خورد.

bachche tup râ mohkam be divâr zad va tup be panjare khord.

The child hit the ball hard against the wall, and the ball struck the window. (neutral; agentive زدن versus collision خوردن)

Literal eating and structural ambiguity

In غذا خوردن, خوردن retains its consumption meaning and غذا can behave as its direct object. It can be modified, counted, replaced by a pronoun, or marked with را when specific: غذا را خوردم. In شکست خوردن, by contrast, شکست helps name the event “be defeated”; it is not ordinary food-like material consumed by the subject.

غذایم را خوردم، اما هنوز چایم را نخورده‌ام.

ghazâ-yam râ khordam, ammâ hanuz chây-am râ na-khorde-am.

I ate my food, but I still haven’t drunk my tea. (neutral; literal consumption with specific objects)

Meaning and expandability, not spelling alone, distinguish the two. Both put a noun before خوردن, and Persian scholarship analyzes the boundary between free object and fixed nonverbal element as a continuum rather than an infallible visual division.

Tehran speech and a short exchange

Everyday Tehran shortens third-person imperfective forms to می‌خوره، می‌خورن (informal, regional: Tehran). A past form such as خوردیم already has the same spelling in standard and colloquial Persian. These forms apply equally to literal and lexical uses; the surrounding predicate supplies the meaning.

— چرا گوشیتو جواب ندادی؟ — زمین خورده بودم و دستم درد می‌کرد.

— cherâ gushi-to javâb na-dâdi? — zamin khorde budam-o dast-am dard mi-kard.

— Why didn’t you answer your phone? — I had fallen, and my hand hurt. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

1. Keeping the loser as a direct object of شکست خوردن

❌ تیم ما حریف را شکست خورد.

Incorrect — the affected team is the subject of شکست خوردن; the winner can take از.

✅ تیم ما در فینال از حریف قدیمی شکست خورد.

tim-e mâ dar finâl az harif-e qadimi shekast khord.

Our team lost to its old rival in the final.

2. Adding a second passive auxiliary

❌ بازیکن در برخورد ضربه خورده شد.

Incorrect — ضربه خوردن already forms the lexical affected predicate.

✅ بازیکن در برخورد شدید ضربه خورد و از زمین بیرون رفت.

bâzikon dar barkhord-e shadid zarbe khord va az zamin birun raft.

The player was hit in the hard collision and left the field.

3. Using collision خوردن for an agentive hit

❌ من توپ را به دیوار خوردم.

Incorrect for deliberate hitting — an agent uses زدن; collision خوردن makes the moving item the subject.

✅ من توپ را آرام به دیوار زدم.

man tup râ ârâm be divâr zadam.

I hit the ball gently against the wall.

4. Putting aspect marking on شکست

❌ تیم ما می‌شکست خورد.

Incorrect — می‌ attaches to the light verb خوردن, not to شکست.

✅ تیم ما معمولا در خانه شکست نمی‌خورد.

tim-e mâ ma'mulan dar khâne shekast nemi-khorad.

Our team does not usually lose at home.

5. Joining the members as one word

❌ کنار پله زمین‌خوردم.

Incorrect standard spacing — زمین and the inflected light verb remain separate words.

✅ کنار پله زمین خوردم و زانویم زخمی شد.

kenâr-e pelle zamin khordam va zânu-yam zakhmi shod.

I fell beside the step and injured my knee.

Key Takeaways

  • These predicates feel passive but are stored lexical combinations, not a productive passive rule.
  • Involuntary-event compounds include زمین خوردن، سرما خوردن، زنگ خوردن.
  • Distinguish literal eating and collision from compound meanings by the whole frame, not by word-for-word translation.
