Lexical Passive-Like Compounds with خوردن

Persian uses خوردن “eat” as the light verb in many lexical compounds whose subject undergoes an unpleasant event: فریب خوردن “be deceived,” شکست خوردن “be defeated,” and کتک خوردن “get beaten.” Their English translations often look passive, but the Persian predicates are not built with passive auxiliary شدن.

The whole expression is a lexical unit. خوردن carries tense, mood, negation, and agreement directly, while the preceding noun determines the specialized event meaning.

Why خوردن does not mean “eat” here

Literal خوردن covers eating and drinking, but it also participates in meanings involving contact, impact, receipt, and adverse experience. The compounds conventionalize those extensions.

چند نفر به وعده‌های دروغین آن شرکت اعتماد کردند و فریب خوردند.

chand nafar be va'de-hâ-ye dorughin-e ân sherkat e'temâd kardand-o farib khordand.

Several people trusted that company's false promises and were deceived. (neutral standard; lexical فریب خوردن)

تیم ما در وقت اضافه شکست خورد.

tim-e mâ dar vaqt-e ezâfe shekast khord.

Our team was defeated in extra time. (neutral standard; lexical شکست خوردن)

بچه در دعوا کتک خورد، اما آسیب جدی ندید.

bachche dar da'vâ kotak khord, ammâ âsib-e jeddi nadid.

The child got beaten in the fight but was not seriously injured. (neutral conversation; کتک خوردن)

No one is literally consuming deceit, defeat, or a beating. Translating the pieces separately destroys the lexical meaning.

💡
When a noun plus خوردن has an established dictionary meaning, conjugate the pair as one predicate. The noun is not automatically food or a direct object.

Active morphology, patient-like subject

The grammatical subject of فریب خوردن is the person deceived. Nevertheless, خوردن inflects as an ordinary active verb: past stem خورد, present stem خور, participle خورده.

Categoryفریب خوردنMeaning
simple pastفریب خوردمI was deceived
present/habitualفریب می‌خورمI am / get deceived
negative pastفریب نخوردمI was not deceived
subjunctiveفریب بخورمthat I be deceived
perfectفریب خورده‌امI have been deceived

دیگر با دیدن یک تخفیف بزرگ فریب نمی‌خورم.

digar bâ didan-e yek takhfif-e bozorg farib nemi-khoram.

I no longer get fooled just by seeing a big discount. (neutral conversation; negative present)

مواظب باش دوباره گول این پیام جعلی را نخوری.

movâzeb bâsh do-bâre gul-e in peyâm-e ja'li râ na-khori.

Be careful not to fall for this fake message again. (informal-neutral; negative subjunctive)

The established frame گولِ کسی/چیزی را خوردن can package the particular deception as a specific را-marked phrase. This lexical option does not license شکست را خوردن or make the nonverbal element an object in every خوردن compound.

Because this is not a شدن passive, adding another passive auxiliary normally produces an impossible stack: فریب خورده شد is not the ordinary way to say “was deceived.” The perfect فریب خورده است is different: است completes the active perfect of the lexical compound.

Argument structure belongs to each compound

The experiencer or affected participant is usually the subject, but other complements vary lexically. There is no single “خوردن-compound rule” that predicts every preposition.

شکست خوردن commonly introduces an opponent with از and a competition or context with در. کتک خوردن can introduce the attacker with از, especially in conversation. فریب خوردن can identify the deceiver through a possessive or source phrase, but active فریب دادن is often clearer when the deceiver matters.

تیم نوجوانان در فینال از حریف باتجربه‌اش شکست خورد.

tim-e nowjavânân dar finâl az harif-e bâ-tajrobe-ash shekast khord.

The youth team lost the final to its experienced opponent. (neutral sports register; opponent with از)

او در نوجوانی چند بار از بچه‌های بزرگ‌تر کتک خورده بود.

u dar nowjavâni chand bâr az bachche-hâ-ye bozorg-tar kotak khorde bud.

As a teenager, he had been beaten several times by older children. (neutral narrative; source-like attacker phrase)

صنعت گردشگری منطقه بعد از سیل ضربه خورد.

san'at-e gardeshgari-ye mantaqe ba'd az seyl zarbe khord.

The region's tourism industry took a hit after the flood. (formal-neutral; metaphorical ضربه خوردن)

The last subject is abstract, demonstrating that “recipient” is semantic rather than a grammatical passive patient role.

Lexical pairings are not fully productive

Some compounds form conventional opposing pairs: فریب دادن / خوردن، شکست دادن / خوردن، کتک زدن / خوردن. Other nouns choose different light verbs. Standard Persian normally says آسیب دیدن “be harmed,” though آسیب خوردن is established for physical objects or systems in suitable contexts. It says دعوت شدن, not an invented دعوت خوردن.

بدنه‌ی خودرو از سمت راست ضربه خورده است.

badane-ye khodro az samt-e râst zarbe khorde ast.

The car body has been struck on the right side. (neutral technical description; perfect lexical compound)

تیم در نیمه‌ی اول دو گل خورد و بعد نتیجه را جبران کرد.

tim dar nime-ye avval do gol khord-o ba'd natije râ jobrân kard.

The team conceded two goals in the first half and then came back. (sports register; گل خوردن has an additional quantity phrase)

Here دو گل behaves as the quantity conceded. That valency cannot be predicted from a general passive transformation; it belongs to football expression گل خوردن.

Register and natural alternatives

فریب خوردن and شکست خوردن are neutral across speech and writing. گول خوردن is more conversational (informal). کتک خوردن is ordinary but concrete and blunt; a formal report may prefer مورد ضرب‌وشتم قرار گرفتن. That longer expression is not inherently more accurate—it simply fits institutional style.

— جدی حرفش رو باور کردی؟ — آره، بدجوری گول خوردم.

— jeddi harf-ash ro bâvar kardi? — âre, badjuri gul khordam.

— Did you seriously believe him? — Yeah, I got completely fooled. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

1. Translating خوردن literally

❌ تیم ما شکست را خورد.

Incorrect literal assembly — lexical شکست خوردن has no را between its two parts.

✅ تیم محله‌ی ما با اختلاف یک امتیاز شکست خورد.

tim-e mahalle-ye mâ bâ ekhtelâf-e yek emtiyâz shekast khord.

Our neighborhood team lost by one point.

2. Replacing the lexical light verb with شدن

❌ او فریب شد.

Incorrect — the established patient-oriented compound is فریب خوردن.

✅ او به‌خاطر اعتماد بی‌جا فریب خورد.

u be-khâter-e e'temâd-e bi-jâ farib khord.

He or she was deceived because of misplaced trust.

3. Adding a second passive auxiliary

❌ بازیکن کتک خورده شد.

Incorrect — کتک خوردن already forms a lexical patient-oriented predicate; do not add شدن.

✅ بازیکن بیرون ورزشگاه کتک خورد.

bâzikon birun-e varzeshgâh kotak khord.

The player was beaten outside the stadium.

4. Marking the affected subject with را

❌ آن بازیکن را شکست خورد.

Incorrect — the defeated participant is the subject of شکست خوردن, not a را-marked object.

✅ آن بازیکن در دور دوم از قهرمان مسابقات شکست خورد.

ân bâzikon dar dowr-e dovvom az qahremân-e mosâbeqât shekast khord.

That player lost to the tournament champion in the second round.
