An unreal present conditional imagines a situation that does not hold now, or that the speaker treats as remote: اگر وقت داشتم، بیشتر کتاب میخواندم “If I had time, I would read more.” Persian normally uses past-shaped forms in both clauses, but those forms do not place the imagined situation in actual past time. The conditional frame makes them counterfactual.
English learners may look for a separate equivalent of would. Persian has no dedicated conditional auxiliary. It reuses the می + past stem + ending pattern—the same morphology used for past habitual or continuous meaning—and lets اگر, context, and the relation between the clauses produce the unreal reading.
The basic pattern
| Part | Frequent form | Example | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| condition | اگر + می + past stem + ending | اگر نزدیکتر زندگی میکردی | imagined present circumstance |
| stative condition | stative past form | اگر وقت داشتم / اگر جای تو بودم | counterfactual possession or state |
| result | می + past stem + ending | بیشتر میدیدمت | imagined consequence |
| modal result | past modal + dependent verb | میتوانستم کمک کنم | imagined ability or possibility |
اگر وقت بیشتری داشتم، هر روز آشپزی میکردم.
agar vaqt-e bishtari dâshtam, har ruz âshpazi mi-kardam.
If I had more time, I would cook every day. (unreal present; neutral standard)
اگر نزدیکتر زندگی میکردی، بیشتر همدیگر را میدیدیم.
agar nazdik-tar zendegi mi-kardi, bishtar hamdigar râ mi-didim.
If you lived closer, we would see each other more often. (present counterfactual)
اگر فردا کار نداشتم، همراه شما میآمدم.
agar fardâ kâr na-dâshtam, hamrâh-e shomâ mi-âmadam.
If I didn't have work tomorrow, I would come with you. (future situation treated as unreal or unlikely)
The morphology is past, but the time comes from context: هر روز and نزدیکتر زندگی کردن describe the present; فردا points forward. This is why translating one Persian tense form with one English tense name is unreliable.
Stative conditions: داشتم and بودم
Present states frequently appear as simple past-shaped داشتم and بودم, without می: اگر پول داشتم “if I had money,” اگر جای تو بودم “if I were you.” Adding می mechanically to every protasis produces unnatural forms for these common state predicates.
اگر جای تو بودم، هنوز جواب نمیدادم.
agar jâ-ye to budam, hanuz javâb nemi-dâdam.
If I were you, I wouldn't answer yet. (counterfactual state and advice)
اگر قیمتش کمتر بود، همین امروز میخریدمش.
agar qeymat-ash kam-tar bud, hamin emruz mi-kharidam-ash.
If it cost less, I would buy it today. (present unreal state; object clitic on the result verb)
اگر خانه بالکن داشت، برای ما مناسبتر بود.
agar khâne bâlkon dâsht, barâ-ye mâ monâseb-tar bud.
If the apartment had a balcony, it would be more suitable for us. (counterfactual property)
The result can itself be stative بود rather than میبود. Contemporary Iranian Persian chooses the natural lexical aspect of the predicate; a neat mechanical rule requiring می in every clause would be false.
Modal results
A counterfactual result often contains میتوانستم / میتوانستیم “could,” میشد “it would be possible,” or a past-shaped desire such as میخواستم. The lexical action after توانستن remains in the present subjunctive.
اگر اینترنت سریعتر بود، میتوانستیم جلسه را آنلاین برگزار کنیم.
agar internet sari'-tar bud, mi-tavânestim jalase râ ânlâyn bargozâr konim.
If the internet were faster, we could hold the meeting online. (unreal present ability)
اگر ماشین داشتیم، میشد آخر هفته بیرون شهر برویم.
agar mâshin dâshtim, mi-shod âkhar-e hafte birun-e shahr beravim.
If we had a car, we could go out of town this weekend. (impersonal modal result)
The past shape of the modal creates distance from present reality. Compare this with a real condition, where the speaker leaves the possibility open and commonly uses a present subjunctive protasis. That contrast is developed on Real Conditionals with اگر.
Real versus unreal: a minimal contrast
اگر وقت داشته باشم، عصر به شما زنگ میزنم.
agar vaqt dâshte bâsham, asr be shomâ zang mi-zanam.
If I have time, I'll call you this evening. (real/open condition)
اگر وقت داشتم، عصر به شما زنگ میزدم.
agar vaqt dâshtam, asr be shomâ zang mi-zadam.
If I had time, I would call you this evening. (unreal or remote condition)
The second sentence strongly suggests that the speaker lacks time or regards calling as unlikely. Counterfactual morphology normally conveys remoteness, but speakers can exploit that distance pragmatically without making a strict logical claim.
Polite distance
Past and counterfactual framing can soften a request by presenting it as contingent rather than imposed. This is common in service encounters and careful conversation.
اگر امکان داشت، میخواستم وقت ملاقات را عوض کنم.
agar emkân dâsht, mi-khâstam vaqt-e molâqât râ avaz konam.
If possible, I would like to change my appointment. (polite, careful spoken standard)
اگر زحمتی نبود، میشد پنجره را باز کنید؟
agar zahmati na-bud, mi-shod panjare râ bâz konid?
If it wouldn't be any trouble, could you open the window? (deferential request)
A short exchange
چرا این آپارتمان را نمیخری؟
cherâ in âpârtemân râ nemi-khari?
Why aren't you buying this apartment? (careful spoken standard)
اگر نور بیشتری داشت، همان امروز آن را میخریدم.
agar nur-e bishtari dâsht, hamân emruz ân râ mi-kharidam.
If it had more light, I would buy it today. (careful spoken standard)
Common Mistakes
1. Using an infinitive as the condition
❌ اگر وقت داشتن، بیشتر ورزش میکردم.
Incorrect — the protasis needs a finite form agreeing with its subject.
✅ اگر وقت داشتم، هفتهای سه بار شنا میکردم.
agar vaqt dâshtam, hafte-i se bâr shenâ mi-kardam.
If I had time, I would swim three times a week.
2. Using the present stem inside the past-shaped protasis
❌ اگر اینجا زندگی میکنتم، پیاده میرفتم.
Incorrect — past-imperfective کردن uses past stem کرد, not present stem کن.
✅ اگر اینجا زندگی میکردم، پیاده سر کار میرفتم.
agar injâ zendegi mi-kardam, piyâde sar-e kâr mi-raftam.
If I lived here, I would walk to work.
3. Separating می from its verb
❌ اگر نزدیکتر می زندگی کردی، بیشتر میدیدمت.
Incorrect — می is a bound prefix and immediately precedes the past stem with a ZWNJ.
✅ اگر نزدیکتر زندگی میکردی، هر هفته میدیدمت.
agar nazdik-tar zendegi mi-kardi, har hafte mi-didam-at.
If you lived closer, I would see you every week.
4. Omitting imperfective می from an event result
❌ اگر پول داشتم، این رایانه را خریدم.
Incorrect for a present counterfactual — خریدم reports an actual completed purchase.
✅ اگر پول کافی داشتم، این رایانه را میخریدم.
agar pul-e kâfi dâshtam, in râyâne râ mi-kharidam.
If I had enough money, I would buy this computer.
Key Takeaways
- Unreal present conditions commonly use past-imperfective morphology, while داشتن and بودن often appear as داشتم and بودم.
- The result can use past-imperfective میکردم, a stative past form, or a modal such as میتوانستم.
- Past morphology marks remoteness here, not necessarily past time.
- Persian has no separate word corresponding mechanically to conditional would.
- Counterfactual distance can also soften a request.
