Verb Choice in Academic Argument

Academic Persian does not use every verb meaning “show” interchangeably. نشان دادن presents evidence or a result, حاکی بودن characterizes something as an indication, دلالت کردن draws an interpretive relation, and مطرح کردن introduces a question, hypothesis, criticism, or proposal without asserting that it is true. Choosing among them determines both the syntax of the sentence and the author's evidential commitment.

English academic prose can use show, indicate, suggest, and raise with overlapping complements. Persian distributes those functions through different light-verb constructions and prepositions. A formal-looking noun cannot simply be inserted before any of the four verbs: از belongs with حاکی, بر belongs with دلالت, and an introduced issue is usually marked as the object of مطرح کردن.

Construction and stance map

PredicateFrequent frameTypical stance
نشان دادنX نشان می‌دهد که P / X را نشان می‌دهدevidence supports P; relatively direct
حاکی بودنX حاکی از Y است / حاکی از آن است که PX is an indication of Y; formal and somewhat cautious
دلالت کردنX بر Y دلالت می‌کندX warrants or points to an interpretation
مطرح کردنکسی Y را مطرح می‌کند / X این پرسش را مطرح می‌کند که...introduces Y for consideration; no truth commitment

These are (academic/formal) uses. نشان دادن is also fully ordinary in conversation—“show me the photo”—but the other three frames are characteristic of exposition, reports, and public argument. Register does not make them synonyms.

نشان دادن: evidence brought into view

In academic argument, the subject of نشان دادن is commonly a result, comparison, analysis, table, or dataset. The complement can be a که clause or an object noun phrase. The verb presents the evidence as supporting the proposition, but it does not by itself mean “prove beyond doubt.”

نتایج پیمایش نشان می‌دهد که اعتماد عمومی در این دوره کاهش یافته است.

natâyej-e peymâyesh neshân mi-dahad ke e'temâd-e omumi dar in dowre kâhesh yâfte ast.

The survey results show that public trust declined during this period. (academic; relatively direct evidential claim)

مقایسه‌ی دو گروه، تفاوت معناداری در الگوی مصرف نشان نمی‌دهد.

moqâyese-ye do goruh, tafâvot-e ma'nâ-dâri dar olgu-ye masraf neshân nemi-dahad.

The comparison of the two groups does not show a significant difference in consumption patterns. (academic; negative result)

Inanimate plural subjects often take third-singular agreement in formal Persian when construed collectively, as in نتایج ... نشان می‌دهد. Third-plural نشان می‌دهند is also possible when the results are individuated. The choice is agreement construal, not evidence strength.

💡
Use نشان دادن when the grammatical subject is something the reader can inspect—results, analysis, a figure, a comparison—and you want to say what that evidence supports.

حاکی بودن: evidence as an indication

حاکی is an adjective meaning “indicative.” Its canonical frame is حاکی از + noun phrase + است. A finite proposition commonly appears after حاکی از آن است که. This predicate is (formal/academic) and often keeps a little more distance between the writer and the conclusion than unmodified نشان می‌دهد.

کاهش تعداد مراجعه‌کنندگان حاکی از تغییر رفتار مصرف‌کنندگان است.

kâhesh-e te'dâd-e morâje'e-konandegân hâki az taghyir-e raftâr-e masraf-konandegân ast.

The decline in visitor numbers is indicative of a change in consumer behavior. (formal/academic; nominalized complement)

داده‌های اولیه حاکی از آن است که اثر مداخله کوتاه‌مدت بوده است.

dâde-hâ-ye avvaliyye hâki az ân ast ke asar-e modâkhale kutâh-moddat bude ast.

The preliminary data indicate that the intervention's effect was short-lived. (academic; finite complement through از آن است که)

Do not delete از. English indicate that has no preposition, but Persian حاکی selects از. Before a clause, آن serves as the complement of از, and که then introduces its propositional content.

دلالت کردن: an interpreted relation

دلالت کردن بر means that a sign, pattern, formulation, or finding points to a meaning or conclusion. It commonly foregrounds interpretation: the evidence does not merely appear on a table; the author says what it counts as evidence for. The near-equivalent دلالت داشتن بر is also formal, but the productive frame here is بر + noun phrase + دلالت می‌کند.

هم‌زمانی این دو روند به‌ضرورت بر وجود رابطه‌ی علت و معلولی دلالت نمی‌کند.

ham-zamâni-ye in do ravand be-zarurat bar vojud-e râbete-ye ellat-o ma'luli dalâlat nemi-konad.

The concurrence of these two trends does not necessarily imply a causal relationship. (academic; interpretive relation explicitly limited)

تکرار این واژه در متن بر اهمیت مفهومی آن برای نویسنده دلالت می‌کند.

tekrâr-e in vâzhe dar matn bar ahammiyat-e mafhumi-ye ân barâ-ye nevisande dalâlat mi-konad.

The repetition of this word in the text points to its conceptual importance for the author. (academic literary analysis)

The adverbial به‌ضرورت is crucial in the first example. Correlation may نشان دهد a statistical association without بر رابطه‌ی علت و معلولی دلالت کند. Verb choice and qualification together encode the argument's strength.

مطرح کردن: putting an issue into the argument

مطرح کردن does not report evidence for a proposition. It introduces something as a topic, question, hypothesis, criticism, or proposal. The introduced item is a direct object and may take را when specific. A clause can explain the content of a noun such as پرسش or فرضیه.

نویسنده در فصل پایانی فرضیه‌ی دیگری را مطرح می‌کند.

nevisande dar fasl-e pâyâni farziye-ye digari râ matrah mi-konad.

In the final chapter, the author proposes another hypothesis. (academic; introduction, not endorsement)

این ناسازگاری پرسشی اساسی را مطرح می‌کند: آیا شاخص انتخاب‌شده در عمل معتبر است؟

in nâsâzgâri porseshi asâsi râ matrah mi-konad: âyâ shâkhes-e entekhâb-shode dar amal mo'tabar ast?

This inconsistency raises a fundamental question: is the selected index valid in practice? (formal/academic)

The author who فرضیه‌ای را مطرح می‌کند is not yet claiming that the hypothesis is correct. English learners often overtranslate raise with a motion verb; Persian packages the scholarly act as the light-verb construction مطرح کردن.

Nominalized and finite complements

Academic prose often alternates between a noun phrase and a finite که clause. The noun phrase is compact and treats a proposition as an object of analysis; the finite clause makes participants, tense, and polarity explicit.

یافته‌ها از افزایش نابرابری حکایت دارد.

yâfte-hâ az afzâyesh-e nâbarâbari hekâyat dârad.

The findings point to increasing inequality. (formal; compact nominal complement with a related evidential predicate)

یافته‌ها نشان می‌دهد که نابرابری در مناطق روستایی سریع‌تر افزایش یافته است.

yâfte-hâ neshân mi-dahad ke nâbarâbari dar manâteq-e rustâyi sari'-tar afzâyesh yâfte ast.

The findings show that inequality increased faster in rural areas. (academic; finite complement states the comparison explicitly)

Nominalization is not automatically more scholarly. A chain such as نشان‌دهنده‌ی امکان وجود افزایش... can bury who found what and how strong the claim is. A finite complement is often clearer. For dense noun-phrase mechanics, see Ezafe Chains in Academic and Bureaucratic Prose.

Calibrating an argument

تحلیل نخست تفاوتی پایدار را نشان می‌دهد. بااین‌حال، این تفاوت به‌تنهایی بر وجود رابطه‌ی علت و معلولی دلالت نمی‌کند و فقط پرسش تازه‌ای را درباره‌ی نقش سن مطرح می‌کند.

tahlil-e nokhost tafâvoti pâydâr râ neshân mi-dahad. bâ-in-hâl, in tafâvot be-tanhâyi bar vojud-e râbete-ye ellat-o ma'luli dalâlat nemi-konad-o faqat porsesh-e tâze-i râ darbâre-ye naqsh-e sen matrah mi-konad.

The initial analysis shows a stable difference. Nevertheless, that difference alone does not imply causation and merely raises a new question about the role of age. (academic connected argument; evidence, limitation, then research question)

This progression models academic stance: report the observable result, deny an unwarranted inference, and introduce the next question. Repeating نشان می‌دهد three times would obscure those different argumentative acts.

💡
Ask what the grammatical subject is doing in the argument: presenting a result (نشان می‌دهد), serving as an indication (حاکی است), licensing an interpretation (دلالت می‌کند), or introducing an issue (مطرح می‌کند).

Common Mistakes

1. Giving حاکی the wrong preposition

❌ داده‌ها حاکی بر کاهش تقاضا است.

Incorrect — حاکی selects از, not بر.

✅ داده‌های این فصل حاکی از کاهش تدریجی تقاضا است.

dâde-hâ-ye in fasl hâki az kâhesh-e tadriji-ye taqâzâ ast.

This quarter's data indicate a gradual decline in demand.

2. Giving دلالت کردن the wrong preposition

❌ این الگو از تغییر ساختاری دلالت می‌کند.

Incorrect — the formal frame is بر چیزی دلالت کردن.

✅ این الگوی تکرارشونده بر تغییری ساختاری در بازار کار دلالت می‌کند.

in olgu-ye tekrâr-shavande bar taghyiri sâkhtâri dar bâzâr-e kâr dalâlat mi-konad.

This recurring pattern points to a structural change in the labor market.

3. Treating مطرح کردن as proof

❌ پژوهش فرضیه‌ای را مطرح می‌کند، پس آن فرضیه ثابت شده است.

Incorrect inference — مطرح کردن introduces a hypothesis; it does not establish its truth.

✅ پژوهش فرضیه‌ای تازه را مطرح می‌کند که باید در نمونه‌ای بزرگ‌تر آزموده شود.

pazhuhesh farziye-i tâze râ matrah mi-konad ke bâyad dar nemune-i bozorg-tar âzmude shavad.

The study proposes a new hypothesis that must be tested in a larger sample.

4. Using a long infinitive as a finite complement

❌ نتایج نشان می‌دهد کاهش یافتن اعتماد عمومی در سال گذشته.

Incorrect as a finite claim — the nominal infinitive has no tense or finite subject relation after نشان می‌دهد.

✅ نتایج تازه نشان می‌دهد که اعتماد عمومی در سال گذشته کاهش یافته است.

natâyej-e tâze neshân mi-dahad ke e'temâd-e omumi dar sâl-e gozashte kâhesh yâfte ast.

The new results show that public trust declined last year.

Key Takeaways

  • نشان دادن presents evidence; حاکی از ... بودن frames an indication; بر ... دلالت کردن states an interpretation; مطرح کردن introduces an issue.
  • Keep each predicate's argument frame: حاکی از, دلالت بر, and specific object را with مطرح کردن.
  • A که clause makes tense and participants explicit; a nominalized complement creates greater abstraction and density.
  • Verb choice calibrates commitment. An introduced hypothesis is not a demonstrated result, and an observed association is not automatically a causal implication.
