Academic Persian

Academic Persian turns events into stable objects of analysis: بررسی، مقایسه، افزایش، کاهش، ارزیابی. It then locates relations with complex prepositions, calibrates claims with stance expressions, connects dense noun phrases through ezafe, and attributes evidence to named sources. This density is useful when it creates a precise technical concept; it becomes costly when agents, actions, and scope disappear.

English academic prose also favors nominalizations, but English noun piles can often stand side by side without overt linking. Persian normally exposes their relations through ezafe and prepositions. A word-for-word transfer such as “language learner performance analysis” therefore fails: the Persian writer must choose a head and specify how the other nouns relate to it.

The academic construction map

Academic register is normally written-standard or careful-spoken. A conference speaker can simplify syntax and still remain academic; colloquial رو، می‌گه، اینا belong to audience-friendly conversation around the research, not normally to the paper itself.

Nominalization: when an event becomes an object

In پژوهشگران داده‌ها را تحلیل کردند, the finite verb makes the researchers responsible for an event at a time. In تحلیل داده‌ها نشان داد..., the nominalization تحلیل becomes a stable topic that can have a result, limitation, or method.

تحلیل داده‌ها سه الگوی اصلی را آشکار کرد.

tahlil-e dâde-hâ se olgu-ye asli râ âshkâr kard.

Analysis of the data revealed three main patterns. (academic; method nominalized as subject)

پژوهشگران داده‌ها را تحلیل کردند و سه الگوی اصلی یافتند.

pazhuheshgarân dâde-hâ râ tahlil kardand va se olgu-ye asli yâftand.

The researchers analyzed the data and found three main patterns. (clear academic active; agents visible)

Neither is inherently better. Use the noun when the analysis itself will remain the paragraph topic; use the finite active when responsibility or sequence matters.

پس از گردآوری نمونه‌ها، اندازه‌گیری دما هر ده دقیقه انجام شد.

pas az gerd-âvari-ye nemune-hâ, andâze-giri-ye damâ har dah daqiqe anjâm shod.

After the samples were collected, temperature measurement was performed every ten minutes. (academic methods register)

The passive suits a procedure-centered methods section. If who measured the temperature affects reliability, name the researcher or instrument.

Complex prepositions name logical relations

Academic Persian uses multiword frames whose internal ezafe matters: براساسِ داده‌ها “on the basis of the data,” با توجه به نتایج “considering the results,” در مقایسه با گروه کنترل “in comparison with the control group,” در رابطه با “in relation to.” Choose the frame for its relation, not merely because it sounds formal.

براساس داده‌های آزمایش، فرض نخست تأیید نشد.

bar-asâs-e dâde-hâ-ye âzmâyesh, farz-e nokhost ta'yid nashod.

On the basis of the experimental data, the first hypothesis was not confirmed. (academic evidential basis)

میانگین زمان پاسخ در گروه آزمایش، در مقایسه با گروه کنترل، کمتر بود.

miyângin-e zamân-e pâsokh dar goruh-e âzmâyesh, dar moqâyese bâ goruh-e kontrol, kamtar bud.

Compared with the control group, the mean response time was lower. (academic comparison)

با توجه به محدودیت حجم نمونه، این نتیجه باید با احتیاط تفسیر شود.

bâ tavajjoh be mahdudiyyat-e hajm-e nemune, in natije bâyad bâ ehtiyât tafsir shavad.

Given the limited sample size, this result should be interpreted cautiously. (academic limitation statement)

در خصوص and در رابطه با can be useful, but repeated use where simple درباره‌ی would work produces bureaucratic weight rather than greater precision.

Stance markers calibrate, not decorate

Academic claims differ in strength. نشان می‌دهد presents the evidence as supporting a conclusion. به نظر می‌رسد signals an inference. احتمالا marks probability. ممکن است marks possibility. می‌توان نتیجه گرفت makes the inferential step explicit without naming a first-person author.

یافته‌ها نشان می‌دهد که بازخورد فوری دقت را افزایش می‌دهد.

yâfte-hâ neshân mi-dahad ke bâzkhord-e fowri deqqat râ afzâyesh mi-dahad.

The findings indicate that immediate feedback increases accuracy. (academic claim)

به نظر می‌رسد تفاوت دو گروه با تجربه‌ی پیشین مرتبط باشد.

be nazar mi-resad tafâvot-e do goruh bâ tajrobe-ye pishin mortabet bâshad.

The difference between the two groups appears to be related to prior experience. (academic inference; subjunctive under appearance)

از این الگو می‌توان نتیجه گرفت که عامل دیگری نیز دخیل است.

az in olgu mi-tavân natije gereft ke âmel-e digari niz dakhil ast.

From this pattern, one can conclude that another factor is also involved. (academic impersonal inference)

Do not stack شاید، احتمالا، ممکن است، به نظر می‌رسد around one weak claim unless each contributes a distinct scope. Excessive hedging makes responsibility harder to locate.

💡
Choose the stance marker after deciding the evidence strength. “Possible,” “probable,” “appears,” and “shows” are not interchangeable politeness levels.

Long ezafe chains: find the head and group the relations

In نتایج اولیه‌ی تحلیل داده‌های گفتاری کودکان, the head نتایج comes first. اولیه modifies it; تحلیل identifies the process producing the results; داده‌های گفتاری identifies the data; کودکان identifies whose speech. The chain is grammatical, but a reader must hold several relations before reaching the end.

نتایج اولیه‌ی تحلیل داده‌های گفتاری کودکان منتشر شد.

natâyej-e avvaliyye-ye tahlil-e dâde-hâ-ye goftâri-ye kudakân montasher shod.

The preliminary results of the analysis of children's speech data were published. (dense academic ezafe chain)

پژوهشگران داده‌های گفتاری کودکان را تحلیل کردند و نتایج اولیه را منتشر کردند.

pazhuheshgarân dâde-hâ-ye goftâri-ye kudakân râ tahlil kardand va natâyej-e avvaliyye râ montasher kardand.

The researchers analyzed the children's speech data and published the preliminary results. (readable active alternative)

The revision restores event order and agent but changes the information structure. It is appropriate only if پژوهشگران is known and relevant. For detailed chain parsing, see Ezafe Chains in Academic and Bureaucratic Prose.

Citation and source scope

A citation should make clear which claim comes from the source and where the writer's inference begins. Persian frames include به گفته‌ی, بر پایه‌ی پژوهش, چنان‌که ... نشان داده است, and an author name plus year. Citation does not guarantee truth; it assigns evidential responsibility.

بر پایه‌ی پژوهش رضایی در سال ۱۴۰۱، این الگو در سه گروه سنی دیده شده است.

bar pâye-ye pazhuhesh-e Rezâyi dar sâl-e 1401, in olgu dar se goruh-e senni dide shode ast.

According to Rezayi's 1401 study, this pattern was observed in three age groups. (constructed academic citation example)

این پژوهش آن یافته را تأیید می‌کند، اما علت تفاوت را توضیح نمی‌دهد.

in pazhuhesh ân yâfte râ ta'yid mi-konad, ammâ ellat-e tafâvot râ towzih nemi-dahad.

This study confirms that finding but does not explain the cause of the difference. (academic contrast; claim boundaries explicit)

Spoken academic register

A lecturer may retain terms such as فرضیه، متغیر، همبستگی while using shorter clauses, repetition, and explicit signposting. That is careful-spoken academic Persian, not Tehran slang and not a verbatim reading of an article.

تا اینجا دو نتیجه داریم؛ نتیجه‌ی اول درباره‌ی زمان پاسخ است.

tâ injâ do natije dârim; natije-ye avval darbâre-ye zamân-e pâsokh ast.

So far we have two results; the first concerns response time. (careful-spoken academic signposting)

Common Mistakes

1. Copying an English noun pile without ezafe or prepositions

❌ کودک زبان رشد داده تحلیل

Incorrect — the noun sequence has no identifiable head or Persian linking relations.

✅ تحلیل داده‌های رشد زبان کودکان ادامه دارد.

tahlil-e dâde-hâ-ye roshd-e zabân-e kudakân edâme dârad.

Analysis of the children's language-development data is continuing.

2. Stacking stance markers without a coherent scale

⚠️ شاید احتمالا ممکن است به نظر برسد که روش مؤثر باشد.

shâyad ehtemâlan momken ast be nazar beresad ke ravesh mo'asser bâshad.

Perhaps it may probably appear possible that the method is effective. (grammatical pieces, but incoherently overhedged)

✅ نتایج اولیه نشان می‌دهد که روش احتمالا مؤثر است.

natâyej-e avvaliyye neshân mi-dahad ke ravesh ehtemâlan mo'asser ast.

The preliminary results indicate that the method is probably effective.

3. Hiding a methodologically important agent

⚠️ سه پاسخ نامناسب از تحلیل حذف شد.

se pâsokh-e nâmonâseb az tahlil hazf shod.

Three unsuitable responses were excluded from the analysis. (grammatical, but responsibility and exclusion criterion may be too opaque for a methods section)

✅ دو ارزیاب براساس معیار ثبت‌شده سه پاسخ را حذف کردند.

do arzyâb bar-asâs-e me'yâr-e sabt-shode se pâsokh râ hazf kardand.

Two evaluators excluded three responses according to the registered criterion.

4. Using colloquial morphology inside a paper without a quoted voice

⚠️ یافته‌ها می‌گه این متغیر رو باید جدا بررسی کنیم.

yâfte-hâ mi-ge in motaghayyer ro bâyad jodâ barrasi konim.

The findings say we should examine this variable separately. (natural conversation about research, but register-inappropriate as unquoted academic prose)

✅ یافته‌ها نشان می‌دهد که این متغیر باید جداگانه بررسی شود.

yâfte-hâ neshân mi-dahad ke in motaghayyer bâyad jodâgâne barrasi shavad.

The findings indicate that this variable should be examined separately. (academic written)

Key Takeaways

  • Nominalizations make processes available as topics, methods, and technical concepts.
  • Complex prepositions should state a precise evidence, comparison, or limitation relation.
  • Stance markers encode degrees of commitment; more hedges do not produce more rigor.
  • Long ezafe chains are grammatical but should be revised when grouping or agency becomes obscure.
  • Citations assign source responsibility, while readable alternatives restore selected agents and finite events.
