Journalistic Persian packages not only events but also sources and responsibility. A report distinguishes what the outlet observed, what an official اعلام کرد “announced,” what a witness گفت “said,” and what an interested party مدعی شد “claimed.” Passive clauses and headline ellipsis then compress information whose agent is unknown, predictable, or deliberately backgrounded.
This is a register system, not a list of Arabic-origin vocabulary. News prose combines standard Iranian morphology with recurring discourse templates: attribution before or after a proposition, present-perfect reporting with current relevance, verb–subject inversion after a reporting verb, and noun-heavy headlines. All examples below are original news-style sentences, not quotations from a publication.
Attribution is part of the proposition
Good news prose marks the source close to the claim. به گفتهی, براساس, and a reporting clause tell the reader who accepts responsibility for the information.
| Frame | Source relation | Typical force |
|---|---|---|
| به گفتهی سخنگو... | speech attributed to a person | neutral source marking |
| براساس گزارش سازمان... | documentary basis | claim anchored in a report |
| سخنگو اعلام کرد... | official public act | source commits institutionally |
| شاهد گفت... | reported testimony | neutral report of speech |
| شرکت مدعی شد... | contested or unverified assertion | journalist withholds endorsement |
به گفتهی سخنگوی شهرداری، پل تا پایان ماه بازگشایی میشود.
be gofte-ye sokhangu-ye shahrdâri, pol tâ pâyân-e mâh bâz-goshâyi mi-shavad.
According to the municipal spokesperson, the bridge will reopen by the end of the month. (journalistic/formal attribution)
شرکت مدعی شد اختلال به اطلاعات کاربران آسیب نزده است.
sherkat modda'i shod ekhtelâl be ettelâ'ât-e kârbarân âsib nazade ast.
The company claimed that the outage had not harmed users' data. (journalistic; مدعی شد withholds endorsement)
Replacing مدعی شد with ثابت کرد would change the outlet's evidential commitment, not merely its style. Reporting verbs carry stance.
Reporting verbs are not interchangeable
گفت is comparatively neutral. اعلام کرد presents a public or official announcement. افزود adds a further statement by the same source, often without repeating the full title. تأکید کرد highlights insistence; هشدار داد categorizes the speech act as a warning; مدعی شد signals distance.
وزیر اعلام کرد اجرای طرح از هفتهی آینده آغاز خواهد شد.
vazir e'lâm kard ejrâ-ye tarh az hafte-ye âyande âghâz khâhad shod.
The minister announced that implementation of the plan will begin next week. (formal news report)
او افزود جزئیات بودجه پس از نشست منتشر میشود.
u afzud joz'iyyât-e budje pas az neshast montasher mi-shavad.
He added that the budget details would be published after the meeting. (journalistic continuation)
Persian does not require mechanical English-style backshifting. A future or present form inside the report can remain anchored to the original speaker's timetable when that timetable is still live.
Present perfect and evidential distance
News reports often use the present perfect for an event whose result matters now: اعلام کرده است، گزارش شده است، افزایش یافته است. In source-reporting contexts, the perfect can also help present information as newly established or currently on record. It is not a dedicated evidential morpheme by itself; attribution, lexical verb, and context create the evidential effect.
مرکز آمار اعلام کرده است نرخ مشارکت در این دوره افزایش یافته است.
markaz-e âmâr e'lâm karde ast nerkh-e moshârekat dar in dowre afzâyesh yâfte ast.
The statistics center has announced that the participation rate has increased in this period. (journalistic present relevance)
گزارش شده است که چند روستا هنوز برق ندارند.
gozâresh shode ast ke chand rustâ hanuz barq nadârand.
It has been reported that several villages still lack electricity. (formal impersonal reporting; source not named here)
The second frame is appropriately cautious only if the source is recoverable elsewhere. Repeated source-free گزارش شده است can obscure responsibility.
Passive voice backgrounds the actor
Journalistic passive منتشر شد، بازداشت شد، لغو شد foregrounds the affected participant or the newsworthy result. An agent phrase with توسط is possible in formal reporting, but a named active subject is often clearer when responsibility matters.
سه پرواز به دلیل مه شدید لغو شد.
se parvâz be dalil-e meh-e shadid laghv shod.
Three flights were canceled because of heavy fog. (journalistic passive; operator predictable or irrelevant)
هیئت نظارت قرارداد را پس از دو ماه بررسی رد کرد.
hey'at-e nezârat qarârdâd râ pas az do mâh barrasi rad kard.
The supervisory board rejected the contract after a two-month review. (formal active; responsible body named)
The choice is informational. Passive is not automatically more objective, and active is not automatically less formal.
Journalistic verb–subject inversion
After a quotation or reported proposition, Persian news writing can put the reporting verb before its subject: گفت سخنگوی وزارتخانه or افزود رئیس کمیسیون. This keeps the quoted or reported content prominent and postpones a long title. It is a formal journalistic option, not the neutral order for every Persian clause.
«گفتوگوها ادامه دارد»، گفت سخنگوی هیئت مذاکرهکننده.
«goft-o-guhâ edâme dârad», goft sokhangu-ye hey'at-e mozâkere-konande.
‘The talks are continuing,’ said the negotiating team's spokesperson. (journalistic inversion)
رئیس کمیسیون افزود بررسی لایحه امروز پایان نمییابد.
ra'is-e komisiyon afzud barrasi-ye lâyehe emruz pâyân nemi-yâbad.
The committee chair added that review of the bill would not finish today. (ordinary subject–verb order in formal news)
Both orders are available. Inversion is motivated by discourse packaging and title weight. See Journalistic Verb–Subject Inversion for the structural diagnostics.
Headline ellipsis
Persian headlines often omit a copula or predictable reporting frame and present an event as a dense noun phrase: افزایش قیمت بلیت قطار, آغاز ثبتنام دورهی تازه, تعطیلی مدارس سه شهرستان. A headline is not necessarily a complete clause, and its missing relation must be recovered from the article.
آغاز بازسازی دو مدرسه پس از تعطیلات
âghâz-e bâz-sâzi-ye do madrese pas az ta'tilât
Renovation of two schools to begin after the holidays. (constructed headline; elliptical noun phrase)
بازسازی دو مدرسه پس از تعطیلات آغاز میشود.
bâz-sâzi-ye do madrese pas az ta'tilât âghâz mi-shavad.
Renovation of two schools will begin after the holidays. (complete news sentence)
Do not copy headline fragments into ordinary paragraphs. Add the finite predicate that time, polarity, and responsibility require.
Arabic-origin vocabulary and information density
Journalistic Persian contains established words such as اعلام، مذاکرات، تحولات، اظهارات، مقامات. Their origin does not make them incorrect or incomprehensible. Difficulty comes from clusters of abstract nouns and long ezafe chains. A good reader finds the head, reporting predicate, and source rather than translating every noun in isolation.
براساس اظهارات مقامهای محلی، روند توزیع کمکها سرعت گرفته است.
bar-asâs-e ezhârât-e maqâm-hâ-ye mahalli, ravand-e towzi'-e komak-hâ sor'at gerefte ast.
According to local officials' statements, aid distribution has accelerated. (formal journalistic density)
Common Mistakes
1. Presenting a source's allegation as the outlet's fact
⚠️ شرکت ثابت کرد هیچ خطایی رخ نداده است.
sherkat sâbet kard hich khatâyi rokh nadâde ast.
The company proved that no error occurred. (grammatical, but overcommits if the company only asserted this)
✅ شرکت اعلام کرد که به گفتهی مدیرانش هیچ خطایی رخ نداده است.
sherkat e'lâm kard ke be gofte-ye modirân-ash hich khatâyi rokh nadâde ast.
The company announced that, according to its managers, no error had occurred. (attribution preserved)
2. Treating a headline fragment as a complete paragraph sentence
❌ شمار مسافران افزایش در تعطیلات.
Incorrect clause — the nominal element افزایش has no finite predicate or well-formed relation to the subject.
✅ شمار مسافران در تعطیلات افزایش یافت.
shomâr-e mosâferân dar ta'tilât afzâyesh yâft.
The number of passengers increased during the holidays.
3. Inverting every subject after its verb
⚠️ بررسی کرد کمیته همهی اسناد را.
barrasi kard komite hame-ye asnâd râ.
The committee reviewed all the documents. (interpretable but marked and poorly motivated; journalistic inversion is not a general VSO rule)
✅ کمیته همهی اسناد را بررسی کرد.
komite hame-ye asnâd râ barrasi kard.
The committee reviewed all the documents. (neutral standard order)
4. Using a passive to hide an actor whose responsibility is central
⚠️ دستور حذف دادهها صادر شد.
dastur-e hazf-e dâde-hâ sâder shod.
The order to delete the data was issued. (grammatical passive, but inadequate if identifying the decision-maker is central to the report)
✅ مدیر بخش دستور حذف دادهها را صادر کرد.
modir-e bakhsh dastur-e hazf-e dâde-hâ râ sâder kard.
The department manager issued the order to delete the data.
Key Takeaways
- Journalistic grammar separates an event from the source responsible for reporting it.
- Reporting verbs encode different degrees of institutional force, stance, and distance.
- The present perfect contributes current relevance; evidential force comes from the whole source frame.
- Passive voice and verb–subject inversion are motivated information-packaging choices, not automatic marks of objectivity.
- Headlines commonly omit predictable clause material; restore a finite predicate in ordinary prose.
