Evidentiality and Responsibility

Persian has no obligatory verbal category that forces speakers to mark every statement as witnessed, inferred, or reported. Instead, speakers distribute evidential responsibility across tense and aspect, sentence adverbs such as گویا and ظاهرا, source phrases such as به گفته‌ی..., and explicit statements about verification. Leaving those choices unmarked normally presents a proposition on the speaker’s own authority.

This matters beyond grammar. “Apparently,” “according to the police,” and “an unnamed user claims” do not assign the same responsibility. In journalism, research, and workplace reporting, a well-formed Persian sentence can still be ethically misleading if it hides the source or turns an allegation into a fact.

A Responsibility Map

FramePrimary contributionTypical commitment
قطار ساعت هشت رسیدplain event assertionspeaker presents the event as established
قطار رسیده استpast event as current result/informationmay support inference or report, but does not encode hearsay alone
گویا...distanced appearance or indirect informationqualified commitment; source unspecified
ظاهرا...conclusion from outward evidence or current appearanceprovisional assessment
به گفته‌ی X...names the human or institutional sourcecommits to accurate attribution, not necessarily to the claim
این ادعا تأیید نشده استstates verification statusexplicitly withholds factual endorsement

قطار ساعت هشت وارد ایستگاه شد؛ خودم آنجا بودم.

qatâr sâ'at-e hasht vâred-e istgâh shod; khod-am ânjâ budam.

The train entered the station at eight; I was there myself. (neutral; explicit direct access)

از روی تابلوی سکو پیداست که قطار رسیده است.

az ru-ye tâblo-ye sakku peydâ-st ke qatâr reside ast.

It is clear from the platform display that the train has arrived. (neutral; inference from present evidence)

💡
No tense exempts the speaker from naming a source. The perfect can invite an evidential reading, but source phrases and verification language carry the decisive responsibility.

Simple Past and Perfect: A Tendency, Not a Code

The simple past readily advances a chronological event as fact: رسید، اعلام کرد، شکست. The present perfect presents an earlier event as current information or a current result: رسیده است، اعلام کرده است، شکسته است. Because reports and inferences are often current information, the perfect frequently occurs in them. It is not a dedicated “someone says” form.

خبرنگار گفت وزیر پس از جلسه ساختمان را ترک کرد.

khabarnegar goft vazir pas az jalse sâkhtemân râ tark kard.

The reporter said the minister left the building after the meeting. (formal-neutral chronological report)

طبق اطلاعیه‌ی وزارتخانه، وزیر پس از جلسه ساختمان را ترک کرده است.

tebq-e ettelâ'iyye-ye vezâratkhâne, vazir pas az jalse sâkhtemân râ tark karde ast.

According to the ministry’s statement, the minister left the building after the meeting. (formal; attributed current report)

در را قفل کرده‌ام و کلید را همراه خودم آورده‌ام.

dar râ qofl karde-am va kelid râ hamrâh-e khod-am âvarde-am.

I have locked the door and brought the key with me. (neutral; firsthand perfect, not hearsay)

The third example blocks a mechanical rule: the speaker directly performed both actions. The Present Perfect as an Evidential develops the aspectual contrast.

گویا and ظاهرا

گویا places some distance between speaker and proposition. The basis may be a report, incomplete recollection, or indirect evidence. It is common in careful writing and formal-neutral reporting. ظاهرا foregrounds how matters appear from available outward evidence. The two overlap, but neither names a source.

گویا هیئت مدیره هنوز درباره‌ی پیشنهاد رأی‌گیری نکرده است.

guyâ hey'at-e modire hanuz darbâre-ye pishnehâd ra'y-giri na-karde ast.

Apparently the board has not yet voted on the proposal. (formal-neutral; distanced information)

ظاهرا سامانه دوباره فعال شده است؛ صفحه‌ی ورود باز می‌شود.

zâheran sâmâne dobâre fa'âl shode ast; safhe-ye vorud bâz mi-shavad.

The system apparently works again; the login page opens. (neutral; inference from observable behavior)

از دور ظاهرا دود دیده می‌شود، اما هنوز علتش معلوم نیست.

az dur zâheran dud dide mi-shavad, ammâ hanuz ellat-ash ma'lum nist.

From a distance, what appears to be smoke is visible, but its cause is not yet known. (careful provisional observation)

In casual Tehran conversation, انگار is often more natural than گویا: انگار اینترنت قطع شده. Register differs, but responsibility remains: none of these words licenses circulating a harmful claim without naming its origin.

Attribution: Who Said What?

Attribution separates the reporter’s commitment from the source’s. به گفته‌ی سخنگو attributes a statement; بر اساس اسناد منتشرشده names documentary grounds; به ادعای شاکی marks content specifically as a claim. ادعا can imply that truth is contested, so it should not replace neutral گفته merely to sound journalistic.

به گفته‌ی سخنگوی آتش‌نشانی، همه‌ی ساکنان ساختمان را ترک کرده‌اند.

be gofte-ye sokhangu-ye âtash-neshâni, hame-ye sâkenân sâkhtemân râ tark karde-and.

According to the fire department spokesperson, all residents have left the building. (formal news attribution)

بر اساس صورت‌جلسه‌ی منتشرشده، سه عضو با طرح مخالفت کرده‌اند.

bar asâs-e surat-jalse-ye montasher-shode, se ozv bâ tarh mokhâlefat karde-and.

According to the published minutes, three members opposed the proposal. (formal; documentary source)

به ادعای شاکی، قرارداد بدون رضایت او تغییر کرده است.

be edde'â-ye shâki, qarârdâd bedun-e rezâyat-e u taghyir karde ast.

The complainant alleges that the contract was changed without their consent. (formal/legal reporting; contested claim)

💡
Attribution commits you to reporting the source accurately, not to endorsing the source’s proposition. A reader must still be able to distinguish statement, evidence, and verified fact.

Rumor and Verification Status

Anonymous می‌گویند “they say” can be ordinary conversation, but it is weak sourcing in a consequential report. Add what is known: این خبر هنوز تأیید نشده است, منبع مستقلی آن را تأیید نکرده, or اطلاعات اولیه نشان می‌دهد. A hedge buried after a dramatic assertion may not repair the impression created by the opening.

در شبکه‌های اجتماعی شایعه‌ای منتشر شده است، اما هیچ منبع مستقلی آن را تأیید نکرده است.

dar shabake-hâ-ye ejtemâ'i shâye'e-i montasher shode ast, ammâ hich manba'-e mostaqell-i ân râ ta'yid na-karde ast.

A rumor has circulated on social media, but no independent source has confirmed it. (formal responsible reporting)

اطلاعات اولیه نشان می‌دهد قطعی برق کوتاه بوده است، ولی بررسی فنی ادامه دارد.

ettelâ'ât-e avvaliyye neshân mi-dahad qat'i-ye barq kutâh bude ast, vali barrasi-ye fanni edâme dârad.

Preliminary information indicates that the power cut was brief, but the technical investigation continues. (formal; provisional finding)

— شنیدی کارخانه تعطیل شده؟ — فقط یک پیام دیدم؛ هنوز نمی‌دانم منبعش چیست.

— shenidi kârkhâne ta'til shode? — faqat yek payâm didam; hanuz nemi-dânam manba'-ash chist.

— Did you hear the factory has closed? — I only saw one message; I still don’t know its source. (informal, regional: Tehran; responsible withholding)

Common Mistakes

1. Treating every perfect as hearsay

⚠️ چون گفته‌ام آمده‌ام، حتما خبر را از دیگری شنیده‌ام.

chon gofte-am âmade-am, hatman khabar râ az digari shenide-am.

Because I said ‘I have come,’ I must have heard the news from someone else. Grammatical wording, but a false analysis of the perfect.

✅ خودم آمده‌ام تا نتیجه‌ی آزمایش را تحویل بگیرم.

khod-am âmade-am tâ natije-ye âzmâyesh râ tahvil be-giram.

I have come myself to collect the test result. (directly known perfect)

2. Using apparently as if it named a source

⚠️ ظاهرا مدیر استعفا داده است؛ بنابراین منبع خبر روشن است.

zâheran modir este'fâ dâde ast; banâbar-in manba'-e khabar rowshan ast.

Apparently the manager has resigned; therefore the news source is clear. Grammatical, but ظاهرا does not identify any source.

✅ به گفته‌ی روابط عمومی، مدیر نامه‌ی استعفای خود را تحویل داده است.

be gofte-ye ravâbet-e omumi, modir nâme-ye este'fâ-ye khod râ tahvil dâde ast.

According to public relations, the manager has submitted their resignation letter.

3. Presenting an allegation as the reporter’s fact

⚠️ پیمانکار بودجه را دزدیده است؛ یکی از کاربران چنین نوشته بود.

peymânkâr budje râ dozdide ast; yeki az kârbarân chenin neveshte bud.

The contractor stole the budget; one user had written so. Grammatical, but the first clause asserts an unverified accusation as fact.

✅ یک کاربر پیمانکار را به سوءاستفاده از بودجه متهم کرده است؛ این ادعا هنوز تأیید نشده است.

yek kârbar peymânkâr râ be su'estefâde az budje mottaham karde ast; in edde'â hanuz ta'yid na-shode ast.

A user has accused the contractor of misusing the budget; the claim has not yet been verified.

4. Stacking vague hedges instead of clarifying evidence

⚠️ گویا ظاهرا احتمالا شاید سامانه هک شده است.

guyâ zâheran ehtemâlan shâyad sâmâne hak shode ast.

Apparently, seemingly, probably, perhaps the system was hacked. Grammatically parseable, but the hedge stack conceals rather than calibrates the claim.

✅ تیم فنی ورود غیرعادی را تأیید کرده است، اما نفوذ به سامانه هنوز ثابت نشده است.

tim-e fanni vorud-e gheyr-e âdi râ ta'yid karde ast, ammâ nofuz be sâmâne hanuz sâbet na-shode ast.

The technical team has confirmed unusual access, but intrusion into the system has not yet been established.

Key Takeaways

  • Persian evidentiality is distributed across tense, lexical markers, attribution, and discourse context.
  • The perfect can support inference or report, but it does not itself mean “hearsay.”
  • گویا and ظاهرا qualify commitment without naming a source.
  • Attribute consequential claims and state what has or has not been independently verified.
