Iranian Persian can encode social orientation inside the predicate. فرمودن raises the respected person who speaks; تشریف آوردن raises the person who comes; عرض کردن lowers the person speaking to someone respected. These are not simply “formal synonyms.” Their subject points in a particular social direction.
English usually leaves that direction to titles, tone, and please. Persian can combine a title, شما, respectful plural agreement, an honorific predicate, and a humble first-person expression. The challenge is not morphology but perspective: identify whose action the verb describes and whether that participant is being raised or self-lowered.
The Social Geometry
| Predicate or form | Subject normally presented as | Neutral counterpart | Typical register |
|---|---|---|---|
| فرمودن | respected speaker/addressee | گفتن | polite, formal, institutional |
| تشریف آوردن | respected visitor | آمدن | hospitality, reception, ceremonial |
| عرض کردن | speaker self-lowered before recipient | گفتن | deferential, formal |
| خدمت رسیدن | speaker approaching respected recipient | آمدن | careful spoken, deferential |
| بنده | first person framed modestly | من | formal or politely self-lowering |
The system is asymmetric. The same respected professor is the subject of فرمودند, but the recipient of the student’s عرض کردم. Reversing the predicates reverses the stance.
استاد فرمودند نسخهی اصلاحشده را فردا بفرستیم.
ostâd farmudand noskhe-ye eslâh-shode râ fardâ be-ferestim.
The professor said that we should send the revised version tomorrow. (respectful academic speech)
به استاد عرض کردم که یک شاهد دیگر هم پیدا کردهام.
be ostâd arz kardam ke yek shâhed-e digar ham peydâ karde-am.
I respectfully told the professor that I had found another piece of evidence. (self-lowering academic speech)
Raising Another Person with فرمودن
Honorific فرمودن often corresponds simply to “say” when its subject is the respected addressee or a respected third person. It can introduce a quotation or a finite complement. Its literal older sense “command” survives, but context—not the verb alone—decides whether an order occurred.
شما فرمودید جلسه از ساعت ده آغاز میشود.
shomâ farmudid jalse az sâ'at-e dah âghâz mi-shavad.
You said that the meeting begins at ten. (polite standard)
رئیس بیمارستان فرمودند این موضوع باید فوری بررسی شود.
ra'is-e bimârestân farmudand in mowzu' bâyad fowri barrasi shavad.
The hospital director said that this matter must be reviewed immediately. (respectful institutional report)
چه فرمودید؟ صدایتان برای یک لحظه قطع شد.
che farmudid? sedâ-yetân barâ-ye yek lahze qat' shod.
What did you say? Your voice cut out for a moment. (polite telephone speech)
First-person فرمودم is not the humble way to say “I said.” It may mean “I ordered,” quote an institutional authority, or sound mock-grandiose. The role-based restriction is more important than the conjugation table; the full forms belong on فرمودن: to Say Honorifically.
Lowering the Speaker with عرض کردن and بنده
عرض کردن presents a contribution as deferentially offered to the addressee. First-person عرض میکنم، عرض کردم، میخواستم عرض کنم are therefore central. The recipient may appear with به or in the conventional phrase خدمت شما; the content can follow with که.
میخواستم عرض کنم که مبلغ صورتحساب دوبار از حسابم کم شده است.
mi-khâstam arz konam ke mablagh-e surat-hesâb do bâr az hesâb-am kam shode ast.
I wanted to mention that the invoice amount has been deducted from my account twice. (deferential formal complaint)
خدمت شما عرض کنم که پاسخ نهایی هنوز نرسیده است.
khedmat-e shomâ arz konam ke pâsokh-e nahâyi hanuz na-reside ast.
Let me tell you that the final response has not arrived yet. (polite careful speech)
بنده is a self-lowering first-person noun/pronoun, historically “servant.” In modern use it can politely replace من in meetings, interviews, official exchanges, and stylized disagreement. Its verb is still first-person: بنده عرض میکنم، بنده موافق نیستم. It does not require servility, but repeated use can sound bureaucratic or performatively humble.
بنده مسئول هماهنگی جلسه هستم و تا عصر پاسخ میدهم.
bande mas'ul-e hamâhangi-ye jalse hastam va tâ asr pâsokh mi-daham.
I am responsible for coordinating the meeting, and I will reply by this evening. (formal self-reference)
بنده با این تفسیر موافق نیستم، اما دلیل شما را درک میکنم.
bande bâ in tafsir movâfeq nistam, ammâ dalil-e shomâ râ dark mi-konam.
I do not agree with this interpretation, but I understand your reasoning. (formal, respectfully firm)
Honorific Motion and Presence
تشریف آوردن honors the person who comes. Related تشریف داشتن and تشریف بردن honor presence and going. The respected person is always the subject; آوردن does not make them an object. In colloquial Tehran, تشریف میارین remains deferential despite its contracted light verb.
خانم دکتر ساعت یازده تشریف میآورند.
khânom-e doktor sâ'at-e yâzdah tashrif mi-âvarand.
The doctor will come at eleven. (respectful standard; singular referent with plural agreement)
آقای موسوی امروز در دفتر تشریف ندارند.
âqâ-ye Musavi emruz dar daftar tashrif na-dârand.
Mr. Mousavi is not in the office today. (respectful workplace formula)
اگر پنجشنبه تشریف بیارین، همهی اعضای تیم حضور دارن.
agar panjshanbe tashrif biyârin, hame-ye a'zâ-ye tim hozur dâran.
If you come on Thursday, all the team members will be present. (informal polite, regional: Tehran)
For ordinary friends or factual narration, plain آمدن is neutral, not disrespectful. Honorific accumulation is a social choice, not a grammatical requirement.
Agreement and Lexical Honorification Are Separate
A singular respected third person often receives plural agreement: استاد گفتند. An honorific predicate can be added: استاد فرمودند. These two signals reinforce one another, but they are separable. Biography or neutral reporting may use singular استاد گفت; direct deferential interaction favors plural forms more strongly.
مدیر گفتند فردا نتیجه را اعلام میکنند.
modir goftand fardâ natije râ e'lâm mi-konand.
The manager said they would announce the result tomorrow. (respectful agreement with neutral گفتن)
مدیر فرمودند فردا نتیجه اعلام خواهد شد.
modir farmudand fardâ natije e'lâm khâhad shod.
The manager stated that the result would be announced tomorrow. (more ceremonious/formal)
By contrast, بنده refers to the current speaker and takes first-person agreement. Social lowering never changes هستم to third-person هستند.
Institutional Calibration
Reception desks, hospitality, formal academia, religious speech, official correspondence, and hierarchical meetings license these forms readily. Equal colleagues discussing routine work may prefer گفتن، آمدن، من. Overloading a short email with بنده، عرایض، استحضار، فرمایشات can create distance or irony.
در نامهی رسمی نوشتند: «خواهشمند است نتیجه را اعلام فرمایید.»
dar nâme-ye rasmi neveshtand: ‘khâheshmand ast natije râ e'lâm farmâyid.’
In the official letter they wrote: ‘You are requested to announce the result.’ (formal administrative wording)
برای پیام روزمره نوشتم: «لطفا نتیجه را تا عصر خبر بدهید.»
barâ-ye payâm-e ruzmarre neveshtam: ‘lotfan natije râ tâ asr khabar bedahid.’
For an everyday message I wrote: ‘Please let me know the result by this evening.’ (plain polite alternative)
Common Mistakes
1. Honorifying oneself instead of the addressee
⚠️ من به استاد فرمودم که جلسه عوض شده است.
man be ostâd farmudam ke jalse avaz shode ast.
I ordered/told the professor that the meeting changed. Grammatical in a commanding or ironic reading, not the intended humble report.
✅ به استاد عرض کردم که زمان جلسه تغییر کرده است.
be ostâd arz kardam ke zamân-e jalse taghyir karde ast.
I respectfully told the professor that the meeting time had changed.
2. Lowering the respected addressee
⚠️ استاد، شما چه عرض کردید؟
ostâd, shomâ che arz kardid?
Professor, what did you humbly submit? Grammatical only if the professor was speaking deferentially upward; it does not honor the professor here.
✅ استاد، ممکن است بفرمایید منظورتان چه بود؟
ostâd, momken ast be-farmâyid manzur-etân che bud?
Professor, could you say what you meant? (respectful)
3. Giving بنده third-person agreement
❌ بنده فردا در جلسه هستند.
Incorrect — بنده is first-person self-reference here and requires هستم.
✅ بنده فردا در جلسه هستم و صورتجلسه را مینویسم.
bande fardâ dar jalse hastam va surat-jalse râ mi-nevisam.
I will be at the meeting tomorrow and will write the minutes. (formal self-reference)
4. Treating تشریف آوردن as “bring”
❌ مسئول را تشریف بیاورید.
Incorrect for ‘bring the official’ — in تشریف آوردن the honored visitor is the subject, not a را-marked object.
✅ لطفا از مسئول بخواهید به سالن تشریف بیاورند.
lotfan az mas'ul be-khâhid be sâlon tashrif biyâvarand.
Please ask the official to come to the hall. (respectful)
5. Assuming more honorifics always means better manners
⚠️ بنده عرایض ناچیز خود را جهت استحضار خاطر شریف شما عرض مینمایم.
bande arâyez-e nâchiz-e khod râ jehat-e estehzâr-e khâter-e sharif-e shomâ arz mi-namâyam.
I present my insignificant remarks for the information of your noble mind. Grammatical high ceremony, but excessive for an ordinary workplace message.
✅ میخواستم نکتهای را دربارهی زمان تحویل یادآوری کنم.
mi-khâstam nokte-i râ darbâre-ye zamân-e tahvil yâdâvari konam.
I wanted to remind you of one point about the delivery time. (plain professional politeness)
