تعارف is a pragmatic system for managing generosity, modesty, respect, and each person’s freedom from appearing demanding. It includes ritual offers, initial refusals, yielding the doorway or conversational floor, lowering one’s gift or service, and raising the other person. It is not one grammatical construction, and it is not simply “saying what you do not mean.”
The difficult task is inference. بفرمایید may be a fully actionable invitation; نه، ممنون may be a modest first refusal or a final boundary. Speakers judge repetition, practical detail, gesture, status, cost, and setting together. There is no reliable rule that every offer must be made or refused exactly three times.
The mechanics of offering food and issuing invitations are taught in Offering and Inviting. This page asks how interlocutors interpret those forms as successive social moves.
A Sequence, Not a Phrasebook Entry
| Move | Common forms | Interactional job |
|---|---|---|
| offer or yielding | بفرمایید؛ مهمان من باشید؛ اول شما | gives access while displaying generosity or respect |
| renewal | خواهش میکنم؛ حتما؛ واقعا تعارف نمیکنم | shows that the offer remains available |
| acceptance | پس خیلی ممنون؛ اگر ممکن است | accepts while acknowledging the favor |
| definitive refusal | واقعا نمیتوانم؛ ممنون، میل ندارم | closes negotiation with a reason or clear boundary |
Not every encounter contains every move. A cashier handing over change may say بفرمایید once. A host offering food may renew the offer. A medical restriction should end the sequence immediately.
be-farmâyid, avval shomâ vâred shavid.
Please, you go in first. (polite careful speech; yielding the doorway)
khâhesh mi-konam, shomâ be-farmâyid; man ajale na-dâram.
Please, you go ahead; I’m not in a hurry. (polite turn negotiation)
Offers, Refusals, and Renewals
An initial refusal can display restraint: the guest shows that they did not assume entitlement. A renewed offer gives permission to accept without appearing greedy. Yet a first بله is not ungrammatical, and a first نه is not secretly false by definition. Close friends, hurried transactions, and explicitly planned invitations often move directly to a clear answer.
— chây meyl dârid? — na, mamnun, zahmat na-keshid. — chây âmâde ast; agar dust dârid barâ-yetân mi-rizam. — pas kam-rang, lotfan.
— Would you like tea? — No, thank you; don’t trouble yourself. — It’s ready; if you’d like, I’ll pour you some. — Then weak tea, please. (polite host–guest sequence)
mamnun, vâqe'an meyl na-dâram; pezeshk-am gofte fe'lan qahve na-khoram.
Thank you, I truly don’t want any; my doctor told me not to drink coffee for now. (clear final refusal)
hatman barâ-ye shâm be-mânid; ghazâ barâ-ye shesh nafar âmâde karde-im.
Please do stay for dinner; we have prepared food for six. (polite and concretely actionable invitation)
Practical detail is a strong sincerity cue: a set place, prepared food, an available seat, or a specific date shows that acceptance can be accommodated. It is evidence, not a guarantee. واقعا تعارف نمیکنم “I truly am not standing on ceremony” explicitly strengthens an offer, but trust still comes from the situation and relationship.
Payment and قابل ندارد
In restaurants or among friends, speakers may compete to pay: مهمان من باشید “be my guest,” اجازه بدهید من حساب کنم, or colloquial این دفعه با من. A workable closing often accepts the present payment while assigning reciprocity to a future occasion.
— ejâze bedahid in bâr man hesâb konam. — khâhesh mi-konam, mehmân-e man bâshid. — pas daf'e-ye ba'd bâ man.
— Let me pay this time. — Please, be my guest. — Then next time is on me. (polite meal-payment negotiation)
in daf'e mehmun-e man; daf'e-ye ba'd to hesâb kon.
This time you’re my guest; next time you pay. (informal, regional: Tehran)
When a seller or service provider says قابل ندارد, do not assume the price has literally become zero. The conventional reply can acknowledge the formula and ask for the amount clearly.
lotf dârid; mamnun mi-shavam mablagh-e daqiq râ be-farmâyid.
That’s kind of you; I’d appreciate it if you told me the exact amount. (safe polite response in a paid transaction)
Status, Role, and Setting
Taarof is not a simple rule that the lower-status person always refuses and the higher-status person always insists. Hosts conventionally offer; guests avoid presumption. Younger speakers may yield space to older people; an office worker may raise a client while still enforcing institutional limits. Friends can use the same formulas playfully with little hierarchy.
ostâd, be-farmâyid bâlâ-ye majles be-neshinid; in sandali râhat-tar ast.
Professor, please take the place of honor; this chair is more comfortable. (respectful hospitality)
mota'assef-am, moqarrarât ejâze nemi-dahad nobat râ jâbe-jâ konim.
I’m sorry; the rules do not allow us to change the appointment. (polite institutional boundary)
The second sentence remains polite without pretending that an exception is available. Taarof can soften access to a rule; it should not obscure safety, consent, price, or legal conditions.
Safe Learner Strategies
First, acknowledge the offer: ممنون، لطف دارید. If you want to accept but suspect a ritual opening, wait for one clear renewal or ask: اگر واقعا ممکن است، ممنون میشوم. If you want to refuse, state the boundary kindly and concretely. If money is involved, confirm the price.
agar vâqe'an barâ-yetân zahmat-i nist, bâ kamâl-e meyl mi-mânam.
If it truly isn’t any trouble for you, I’d be delighted to stay. (polite acceptance after clarification)
kheyli mamnun, ammâ bâyad tâ sâ'at-e hasht be khâne beresam.
Thank you very much, but I need to be home by eight. (clear polite refusal)
— in sandali khâli ast; be-farmâyid. — mamnun, agar montazer-e kasi nistid mi-neshinam.
— This seat is free; please take it. — Thank you; if you aren’t waiting for anyone, I’ll sit down. (polite public interaction)
Common Mistakes
1. Treating every no as a request for pressure
goft nemi-tavânad be-khorad, ammâ man panj bâr-e digar esrâr kardam.
They said they could not eat, but I insisted five more times. Grammatical, but it ignores a clear boundary.
goft nemi-tavânad be-khorad; goftam eshkâl-i na-dârad va mowzu' râ avaz kardam.
They said they could not eat; I said that was no problem and changed the subject.
2. Believing in a fixed three-refusal rule
bâr-e sevvom pishnehâd dâd, pas hâlâ hatman pishnehâd-ash vâqe'i ast.
They made the offer for the third time, so now it must be genuine. Grammatical Persian, but the cultural inference is unreliable.
be joz'iyyât, emkân-e amali va râbete-ye do nafar tavajjoh konid.
Pay attention to details, practical feasibility, and the relationship between the two people.
3. Taking قابل ندارد as a final price
goft qâbel na-dârad, pas bedun-e pardâkht birun raftam.
They said ‘it is not worthy,’ so I left without paying. The sentence is grammatical; the transactional inference is unsafe.
az lotf-e shomâ mamnun-am; hazine-ye kâr cheqadr mi-shavad?
Thank you for your kindness; how much does the work cost?
4. Translating تعارف as dishonesty
har ta'ârof-i dorugh ast va hich pishnehâd-i vâqe'i nist.
Every taʿârof is a lie and no offer is real. Grammatically well formed, but culturally and analytically false.
ta'ârof mi-tavânad ham ehterâm râ neshân dahad va ham bâ yek pishnehâd-e vâqe'i hamrâh bâshad.
Taʿârof can both show respect and accompany a genuine offer.
Key Takeaways
- Taʿârof manages entitlement, generosity, and respect through sequences rather than fixed words.
- Repetition, detail, feasibility, gesture, status, and setting jointly signal sincerity.
- No fixed number of refusals guarantees the meaning of an offer.
- Respect clear boundaries, and confirm prices or obligations explicitly.
