Choosing تو and شما in Real Encounters

Iranian Persian تو addresses one person within an intimate or deliberately familiar relationship. شما addresses several people or one person politely. Real encounters do not reduce this choice to “singular versus plural”: speakers weigh age, professional role, familiarity, institutional culture, and whether the other person has invited a reciprocal shift.

The safest opening with an unknown adult is normally شما. That is not permanent distance. Many relationships move to تو as solidarity grows, while others retain شما for years as a valued sign of respect. This page is about reading and negotiating those encounters; the agreement repair itself is covered in Using تو with Every Singular You.

A Practical First-Encounter Map

EncounterLikely openingWhyPossible later development
unknown adult in publicشماrespectful neutral distancemay remain شما or become تو
customer and employeeشماinstitutional politenessusually remains شما during service
teacher, doctor, older relativeشماrole, respect, family conventiondepends strongly on relationship
close friend, sibling, partnerتوestablished intimacynormally reciprocal
small childتوordinary singular familiaritynot automatically disrespectful
several listenersشماgrammatical pluralityaddress noun can clarify the group

These are defaults, not social laws. A young company may have an explicit first-name-and-تو culture; two university students may begin with شما and switch quickly; a family may address a grandparent with شما throughout life.

ببخشید، شما در صف داروخانه هستید؟

bebakhshid, shomâ dar saff-e dârukhâne hastid?

Excuse me, are you in the pharmacy line? (polite singular to an unknown adult)

تو هم برای فیلم امشب بلیت گرفتی؟

to ham barâ-ye film-e emshab belit gerefti?

Did you get a ticket for tonight’s film too? (informal singular between friends)

💡
Open with the relationship you currently have, not the closeness you hope to create. شما leaves room for a later friendly shift; premature تو makes that negotiation for the listener.

Age Matters, but It Does Not Decide Alone

An older speaker may use تو to a much younger person while receiving شما in return. This asymmetry can express age hierarchy, affection, or a family convention; it is not automatically hostility. Among unknown adults of similar age, reciprocal شما is a common opening. Professional roles can override age: an older patient may still address a younger physician as شما.

خانم دکتر، شما نتیجه‌ی آزمایش را دیدید؟

khânom-e doktor, shomâ natije-ye âzmâyesh râ didid?

Doctor, have you seen the test result? (polite singular; professional role outweighs age)

عزیزم، تو امروز ناهارت را خوردی؟

aziz-am, to emruz nâhâr-at râ khordi?

Sweetheart, did you eat your lunch today? (intimate singular to a child)

The affectionate عزیزم and possessive ـت align with تو. In the medical encounter, the title and plural agreement align with شما.

Institutions Create Local Norms

Service encounters normally favor شما in both directions because the speakers meet through roles rather than private intimacy. Workplaces vary. A hierarchical office may retain titles and شما; a small team may use first names and تو from the first day. Observe how colleagues address one another before assuming.

شما رسید خرید را همراه دارید؟

shomâ resid-e kharid râ hamrâh dârid?

Do you have the purchase receipt with you? (polite singular service encounter)

لطفا شماره‌ی پیگیری‌تان را روی فرم بنویسید.

lotfan shomâre-ye peygiri-tân râ ru-ye form benevisid.

Please write your tracking number on the form. (polite institutional instruction; pronoun omitted)

در گروه ما همه همدیگر را با اسم کوچک صدا می‌کنند و تو خطاب می‌کنند.

dar goruh-e mâ hame hamdigar râ bâ esm-e kuchek sedâ mi-konand va to khetâb mi-konand.

In our team everyone calls one another by first name and addresses one another with تو. (neutral workplace description)

Institutional convention licenses the last pattern; it should not be generalized to a bank counter or medical consultation.

Reciprocity and the Shift to تو

A switch is clearest when someone proposes it: می‌توانیم همدیگر را تو خطاب کنیم؟ “Can we address each other with تو?” More often, one speaker begins using a first name and singular forms, and the other reciprocates. Do not assume that one isolated تو authorizes a permanent shift; it may reflect age asymmetry, emotion, or a slip.

اگر موافقید، می‌توانیم از این به بعد همدیگر را تو خطاب کنیم.

agar movâfeq-id, mi-tavânim az in be ba'd hamdigar râ to khetâb konim.

If you agree, we can address each other with تو from now on. (careful spoken standard; explicit negotiation)

حتما، راحت‌ترم که من را نیما صدا کنی.

hatman, râhat-tar-am ke man râ Nimâ sedâ koni.

Certainly; I’m more comfortable if you call me Nima. (shift to informal singular)

The first turn begins politely with موافقید; the acceptance authorizes singular کنی. The change itself becomes part of the relationship.

شما Can Mean One or Several

The pronoun and verb do not distinguish polite singular from true plural. Address nouns, shared situation, and follow-up wording do the work.

خانم نادری، شما فردا در دفتر هستید؟

khânom-e Nâderi, shomâ fardâ dar daftar hastid?

Ms. Naderi, will you be in the office tomorrow? (one polite listener)

دوستان، شما فردا در دفتر هستید؟

dustân, shomâ fardâ dar daftar hastid?

Friends, will you be in the office tomorrow? (several listeners)

هر دوی شما باید فرم جداگانه‌ای پر کنید.

har do-ye shomâ bâyad form-e jodâgâne-i por konid.

Both of you must fill out a separate form. (plural explicitly clarified)

If number matters and context is weak, add هر دوی شما، همه‌ی شما, a name, or a group address. Do not expect the ending alone to resolve it.

A Realistic Service Dialogue

— سلام، شما برای تعویض گذرنامه وقت دارید؟ — بله، برای ساعت ده وقت گرفته‌ام. — لطفا اینجا منتظر بمانید.

— salâm, shomâ barâ-ye ta'viz-e gozarnâme vaqt dârid? — bale, barâ-ye sâ'at-e dah vaqt gerefte-am. — lotfan injâ montazer bemânid.

— Hello, do you have an appointment to renew your passport? — Yes, I made one for ten. — Please wait here. (polite institutional exchange)

The employee and visitor remain on شما terms. Efficient service does not require intimate address.

Common Mistakes

1. Choosing Only by the Listener’s Age

⚠️ چون پزشک از من جوان‌تر است، او را تو خطاب می‌کنم.

chun pezeshk az man javân-tar ast, u râ to khetâb mi-konam.

Because the doctor is younger than me, I address them with تو. (grammatical claim, but age alone ignores professional distance)

✅ در نخستین دیدار، پزشک جوان‌تر را هم شما خطاب می‌کنم.

dar nokhostin didâr, pezeshk-e javân-tar râ ham shomâ khetâb mi-konam.

At our first meeting, I address a younger doctor with شما too.

2. Assuming One تو Automatically Creates Reciprocity

⚠️ مدیر به من تو گفت، پس من هم بی‌درنگ به او تو می‌گویم.

modir be man to goft, pas man ham bi-darang be u to mi-guyam.

The manager used تو to me, so I immediately use تو back. (possible, but risky when hierarchy or age explains the asymmetry)

✅ تا وقتی رابطه روشن شود، من مدیر را همچنان شما خطاب می‌کنم.

tâ vaqti râbete rowshan shavad, man modir râ hamchenân shomâ khetâb mi-konam.

Until the relationship becomes clear, I continue to address the manager with شما.

3. Using Singular Agreement after Polite شما

❌ شما می‌خواهی رسید را با پیامک بگیری؟

Incorrect polite agreement — the service encounter requires plural/polite می‌خواهید and بگیرید.

✅ شما می‌خواهید رسید را با پیامک بگیرید؟

shomâ mi-khâhid resid râ bâ payâmak begirid?

Would you like to receive the receipt by text message? (polite singular)

4. Assuming شما Proves Plural Reference

⚠️ شما فردا می‌آیید همیشه یعنی چند نفر می‌آیند.

shomâ fardâ mi-âyid hamishe ya'ni chand nafar mi-âyand.

شما فردا می‌آیید always means several people are coming. (grammatical sentence but a false interpretation of شما)

✅ در سؤالی خطاب به خانم رستمی، شما به یک مخاطب محترم اشاره می‌کند.

dar so'âl-i khetâb be khânom-e Rostami, shomâ be yek mokhâtab-e mohtaram eshâre mi-konad.

In a question addressed to Ms. Rostami, شما refers to one respected addressee.

5. Switching Back and Forth without a Social Reason

❌ شما امروز وقت داری یا می‌خواهید فردا بیایید؟

Incorrect address tracking — the same listener is assigned singular and polite/plural agreement without a motivated shift.

✅ شما امروز وقت دارید یا می‌خواهید فردا بیایید؟

shomâ emruz vaqt dârid yâ mi-khâhid fardâ biyâyid?

Do you have time today, or would you like to come tomorrow? (polite singular)

💡
A choice of pronoun is also a proposal about the relationship. Listen for reciprocity, titles, and institutional norms, and make any shift coherent across the whole turn.

Key Takeaways

  • شما is the safest first choice with an unknown adult and the normal choice in many institutions.
  • Age matters, but role, familiarity, setting, and family convention can outweigh it.
  • A move to تو is clearest when reciprocal or explicitly accepted.
  • شما can address one person politely or several people; clarify with names or group expressions when number matters.
  • Keep the chosen relationship visible through agreement, imperatives, possessives, and tone.
