Compliments and Their Responses | Farsi Grammar

An Iranian Persian compliment is not complete when the positive adjective has been chosen. The recipient must also decide whether to accept the praise, return warmth, share credit, or conventionally lower the praised object. ممنون is the safest broad response; لطف دارید and نظر لطف شماست shift attention to the speaker’s kindness; قابل ندارد can modestly lower an object or favor, but it is not a universal answer to praise.

English often treats a simple “thank you” as the only neutral response and hears self-lowering formulas literally. Persian allows both direct acknowledgment and ritual modesty. The central principle is to preserve the compliment as a friendly social move without making an implausible factual claim.

These formulas are productive response strategies, not compulsory scripts. A warm ممنون is natural after praise of appearance, cooking, work, or hospitality. More elaborate modesty becomes likelier when the compliment concerns status, a gift, or a favor.

ارائه‌تان خیلی روشن و منظم بود. — ممنون، خوشحالم که مفید بود.

A good response acknowledges the speaker’s affiliative intention. Persian modesty redirects credit; it need not contradict the compliment’s content.

Accepting without Sounding Boastful

Plain thanks is neither cold nor boastful. ممنونم explicitly marks the speaker as grateful, while خیلی ممنون adds warmth. A second clause can connect the praise to effort, usefulness, or the occasion without claiming superiority.

غذا واقعا خوش‌طعم شده. — خیلی ممنون؛ دستور مادربزرگم بود.

ghazâ vâqe'an khosh-ta'm shode. — kheyli mamnun; dastur-e mâdarbozorg-am bud.

The food has turned out really delicious. — Thank you very much; it was my grandmother’s recipe. (neutral conversation)

گزارشتان دقیق بود. — ممنونم؛ برای جمع‌آوری داده‌ها وقت زیادی گذاشتیم.

gozâresh-etân daqiq bud. — mamnun-am; barâ-ye jam'-âvari-ye dâde-hâ vaqt-e ziyâdi gozâshtim.

Your report was precise. — Thank you; we spent a lot of time collecting the data. (professional)

The plural گذاشتیم in the second response shares credit. It is more informative than automatic denial such as “No, it was terrible,” which can force the compliment-giver to defend an obviously sincere judgment.

لطف دارید and نظر لطف شماست

لطف دارید literally involves the other person “having kindness,” but interactionally it means “that is kind of you.” It normally stands as a response turn or precedes thanks. نظر لطف شماست is fuller and more formal: “that is your kind opinion.” Neither formula means that the original praise was false.

توضیحتان از همه روشن‌تر بود. — شما لطف دارید؛ همکارانم هم خیلی کمک کردند.

towzih-etân az hame rowshan-tar bud. — shomâ lotf dârid; hamkârân-am ham kheyli komak kardand.

Your explanation was the clearest. — That’s kind of you; my colleagues helped a great deal too. (polite professional)

مقاله‌ی بسیار ارزشمندی نوشته‌اید. — نظر لطف شماست؛ از بازخوردتان سپاسگزارم.

maqâle-ye besyâr arzeshmand-i neveshte-id. — nazar-e lotf-e shomâ-st; az bâzkhord-etân sepâsgozâr-am.

You have written a very valuable article. — That is your kind opinion; I appreciate your feedback. (formal/academic)

In informal Tehran speech, لطف دارین may replace standard لطف دارید. Keep the whole utterance in the same register rather than placing a colloquial ending inside an otherwise official sentence.

چه عکسای قشنگی گرفتی! — مرسی، چشم تو قشنگ می‌بینه.

che aksâ-ye qashang-i gerefti! — mersi, cheshm-e to qashang mi-bine.

What beautiful photos you took! — Thanks; you see them with kind eyes. (informal, regional: Tehran; playful modesty)

When قابل ندارد Fits

قابل شما را ندارد literally says that an object, gift, or service is not worthy of the addressee. Short قابل ندارد and colloquial قابل نداره occur in تعارف. They can modestly respond when someone praises a possession, thanks the speaker for a gift, or asks its price. With a portable object, the formula may even suggest a ritual offer: “it is yours / please take it.” Context therefore matters.

چه خودنویس زیبایی دارید. — قابل شما را ندارد.

che khodnevis-e zibâ-yi dârid. — qâbel-e shomâ râ na-dârad.

What a beautiful fountain pen you have. — It isn’t worthy of you. (polite تعارف; may conventionally imply an offer)

برای هدیه خیلی زحمت کشیدی. — قابل نداره؛ امیدوارم دوستش داشته باشی.

barâ-ye hediye kheyli zahmat keshidi. — qâbel na-dâre; omidvâr-am dust-esh dâshte bâshi.

You went to a lot of trouble for the gift. — It’s nothing compared with what you deserve; I hope you like it. (informal familiar, regional: Tehran)

It is odd after praise of an abstract ability: answering “Your analysis is rigorous” with قابل ندارد treats an ability as though it were a giftable object. Use لطف دارید or acknowledge the work instead.

Before using قابل ندارد, ask what is being lowered. If no object, favor, or gift can be understood, choose ممنون or لطف دارید.

Modesty, Credit, and Reciprocity

Modesty can be specific: mention the team, teacher, source, or remaining limitation. This accepts the speaker’s goodwill while locating achievement realistically. Returning a compliment is optional and should fit the same moment; an unrelated automatic compliment can sound transactional.

اجرای شما بی‌نقص بود. — ممنون؛ راهنمایی استادمان خیلی مؤثر بود.

ejrâ-ye shomâ bi-naqs bud. — mamnun; râhnamâyi-ye ostâd-emân kheyli mo'asser bud.

Your performance was flawless. — Thank you; our teacher’s guidance was very influential. (careful speech)

لباس شما هم خیلی شیک است؛ رنگش را دوست دارم.

lebâs-e shomâ ham kheyli shik ast; rang-ash râ dust dâram.

Your outfit is very stylish too; I like its color. (genuine reciprocal compliment, polite neutral)

— خانه‌تان خیلی گرم و دلنشین است. — لطف دارید؛ خوشحالم که راحت هستید. چای تازه دم کرده‌ام.

Common Mistakes

1. Translating قابل ندارد as “it cannot”

❌ خودکارم قابل نمی‌تواند.

Incorrect — قابل ندارد is a conventional modest formula, not قابل plus an independently conjugated ‘can.’

✅ ممنون؛ این خودکار یادگار پدرم است.

mamnun; in khodkâr yâdegâr-e pedar-am ast.

Thank you; this pen is a keepsake from my father. (neutral response that avoids implying an offer)

2. Rejecting the speaker’s judgment too strongly

⚠️ نه، اصلا خوب نبود؛ شما اشتباه می‌کنید.

na, aslan khub na-bud; shomâ eshtebâh mi-konid.

No, it wasn’t good at all; you’re mistaken. Grammatical, but it rejects a friendly compliment unusually forcefully.

✅ ممنون، هنوز جا برای بهتر شدن دارد.

mamnun, hanuz jâ barâ-ye behtar shodan dârad.

Thank you; there is still room for improvement. (modest without contradicting the speaker)

3. Using قابل ندارد for an abstract skill

⚠️ تحلیل شما خیلی دقیق است. — قابل ندارد.

tahlil-e shomâ kheyli daqiq ast. — qâbel na-dârad.

Your analysis is very precise. — It is not worthy. Both strings are grammatical, but the response lacks a natural object or favor to lower.

✅ تحلیل شما خیلی دقیق است. — لطف دارید؛ نتیجه‌ی کار گروه بود.

tahlil-e shomâ kheyli daqiq ast. — lotf dârid; natije-ye kâr-e goruh bud.

4. Returning an unrelated compliment mechanically

⚠️ گزارش شما عالی بود. — ممنون، کفش شما هم قشنگ است.

gozâresh-e shomâ âli bud. — mamnun, kafsh-e shomâ ham qashang ast.

Your report was excellent. — Thanks, your shoes are pretty too. Grammatical, but the unrelated return sounds automatic.

✅ گزارش شما عالی بود. — خیلی ممنون؛ نظر دقیق شما برایم مهم است.

gozâresh-e shomâ âli bud. — kheyli mamnun; nazar-e daqiq-e shomâ barâ-yam mohem ast.
