Persian does not use one expression for every kind of agreement. بله confirms a yes–no proposition politely; درست است judges a statement correct; موافقم aligns with an opinion, plan, or proposal. Disagreement likewise ranges from direct نه to partial نه لزوما “not necessarily” and viewpoint frames such as به نظرم... “in my view...”
Good interaction depends on what is being accepted: a fact, a prediction, a preference, or a course of action. In settings where relationships matter, speakers often recognize part of the other position before limiting it and giving a reason. This is not evasive grammar; it locates disagreement precisely.
Stance Map

|---|---|---|
| بله / خیر | polarity of a question or proposition | neutral-polite / formal |
| آره / نه | ordinary conversational polarity | informal colloquial / neutral |
| درست است | accuracy of a claim | neutral-careful |
| موافقم | opinion, plan, recommendation | all standard registers |
| نه لزوما | rejects a claimed necessity or inference | neutral-formal |
| تا حدی / درسته، ولی... | partial agreement plus limitation | neutral / colloquial |
بله, آره, and Polarity
بله is the broad respectful “yes” in standard speech. آره is normal in informal Iranian conversation among familiars, including in Tehran; pronunciation and alternatives vary regionally. خیر is formal “no,” common in questionnaires, official answers, and sharp formal contrasts; ordinary conversation usually uses نه.
— آیا نسخهی نهایی آماده است؟ — بله، امروز ارسال میشود.
— âyâ noskhe-ye nahâyi âmâde ast? — bale, emruz ersâl mi-shavad.
— Is the final version ready? — Yes, it will be sent today. (formal-neutral)
— امشب میای؟ — آره، حدود هشت میرسم.
— emshab miyây? — âre, hodud-e hasht mi-resam.
— Are you coming tonight? — Yeah, I'll arrive around eight. (informal, regional: Tehran)
After a negative question, Persian چرا can contradict the negative assumption: نمیآیی؟ — چرا، میآیم “Aren't you coming? — Yes, I am.” Bare بله may instead align with the negative wording in some contexts, so repeat the verb when consequences matter.
The complete polarity pattern is developed on Negative Questions and Answers.
— فردا جلسه نمیآیید؟ — چرا، میآیم؛ فقط کمی دیر میرسم.
— fardâ jalase na-mi-âyid? — cherâ, mi-âyam; faqat kami dir mi-resam.
— Aren't you coming to the meeting tomorrow? — Yes, I am; I'll just be a little late. (contradicting the negative question)
درست است: Confirming Accuracy
Use درست است when a statement, figure, memory, or inference is correct. Colloquial درسته is common in Tehran speech. It does not necessarily mean that you support a proposal built on that fact.
بله، درست است؛ مهلت ثبتنام فردا تمام میشود.
bale, dorost ast; mohlat-e sabt-nâm fardâ tamâm mi-shavad.
Yes, that's correct; registration closes tomorrow. (neutral-careful)
درسته که مسیر کوتاهتره، ولی شب روشنایی کافی نداره.
doroste ke masir kutâh-tare, vali shab rowshanâyi-ye kâfi na-dâre.
It's true that the route is shorter, but it doesn't have enough lighting at night. (informal, regional: Tehran; concession)
The second sentence accepts one fact without accepting the implied recommendation to use the route.
موافقم: Aligning with a View or Plan
موافقم means “I agree/am in favor.” It can stand alone or select با + person/proposal: با شما موافقم، با این پیشنهاد موافقم. The negative is موافق نیستم. چندان موافق نیستم softens it, a phrase such as با این بخش موافق نیستم limits its scope, and اصلا موافق نیستم strengthens it.
با پیشنهاد شما برای تغییر زمان جلسه موافقم.
bâ pishnehâd-e shomâ barâ-ye taghyir-e zamân-e jalase movâfeq-am.
I agree with your proposal to change the meeting time. (formal-neutral)
من هم موافقم که اول با مشتریها صحبت کنیم.
man ham movâfeq-am ke avval bâ moshtari-hâ sohbat konim.
I also agree that we should speak with the customers first. (neutral)
با اصل طرح موافقم، اما دربارهی هزینهاش تردید دارم.
bâ asl-e tarh movâfeq-am, ammâ darbâre-ye hazine-ash tardid dâram.
I agree with the proposal in principle, but I have doubts about its cost. (formal-neutral; scoped agreement)
نه لزوما and Qualified Disagreement
نه لزوما rejects a necessary inference: a lower price does not necessarily mean lower quality. It is especially useful in analytical discussion because it targets the logic rather than the person. فکر نمیکنم... and به نظرم... present the conclusion as the speaker's judgment; they soften social force without weakening grammatical content.
— پس گزینهی ارزانتر حتما کیفیت پایینتری دارد؟ — نه لزوما؛ باید نتایج آزمایش را ببینیم.
— pas gozine-ye arzân-tar hatman keyfiyyat-e pâyin-tari dârad? — na lozuman; bâyad natâyej-e âzmâyesh râ be-binim.
— So the cheaper option must be lower quality? — Not necessarily; we need to see the test results. (analytical)
فکر نمیکنم این راه در ساعت شلوغی سریعتر باشد.
fekr na-mi-konam in râh dar sâ'at-e sholughi sari'-tar bâshad.
I don't think this route is faster during rush hour. (neutral, mitigated disagreement)
به نظرم هنوز برای تصمیم نهایی اطلاعات کافی نداریم.
be nazar-am hanuz barâ-ye tasmim-e nahâyi ettelâ'ât-e kâfi na-dârim.
In my view, we still don't have enough information for a final decision. (formal-neutral)
These frames still allow firm disagreement. They specify the epistemic source instead of presenting a judgment as self-evident fact.
Give a Reason, Not a Verdict about the Person
Direct اشتباه میکنید “you are mistaken” may be justified in a factual correction, but it focuses on the interlocutor. این عدد با جدول سازگار نیست focuses on evidence. In collaborative settings, acknowledge shared goals and explain the conflicting evidence.
با نتیجهگیری شما موافق نیستم، چون نمونهی بررسیشده خیلی کوچک است.
bâ natije-giri-ye shomâ movâfeq nistam, chun nemune-ye barrasi-shode kheyli kuchak ast.
I disagree with your conclusion because the sample examined is very small. (academic, reason stated)
هدفمان یکی است، اما فکر میکنم این روش هزینهی بیشتری ایجاد میکند.
hadaf-emân yeki ast, ammâ fekr mi-konam in ravesh hazine-ye bishtari ijâd mi-konad.
Our goal is the same, but I think this method creates greater costs. (collaborative disagreement)
Minimal Contrast
⚠️ نه، اشتباه میکنی.
na, eshtebâh mi-koni.
No, you're wrong. Valid familiar Persian, but face-threatening without evidence or a context requiring direct correction.
✅ من اینطور برداشت نمیکنم؛ در بند سوم تاریخ دیگری نوشته شده است.
man in-towr bardâsht na-mi-konam; dar band-e sevvom târikh-e digari neveshte shode ast.
I don't interpret it that way; a different date is written in the third clause. (careful disagreement with evidence)
A Short Discussion
— بهتر است جلسه را آنلاین برگزار کنیم. — تا حدی موافقم؛ برای همکاران شهرستان راحتتر است، ولی بخش عملی باید حضوری باشد.
— behtar ast jalase râ ânlâyn bargozâr konim. — tâ haddi movâfeq-am; barâ-ye hamkârân-e shahrestân râhat-tar ast, vali bakhsh-e amali bâyad hozuri bâshad.
— We should hold the meeting online. — I partly agree; it's easier for colleagues outside the capital, but the practical section needs to be in person. (professional discussion)
— یعنی با اصل پیشنهاد موافقی؟ — آره، فقط زمانش مناسب نیست.
— ya'ni bâ asl-e pishnehâd movâfeqi? — âre, faqat zamân-ash monâseb nist.
— So you agree with the proposal itself? — Yeah, only the timing isn't suitable. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Using موافقم for a factual answer
⚠️ ساعت جلسه نه است؟ موافقم.
sâ'at-e jalase noh ast? movâfeq-am.
Is the meeting at nine? I agree. Grammatically interpretable, but mismatched to an ordinary factual confirmation, which calls for بله or درست است.
✅ بله، درست است؛ جلسه ساعت نه شروع میشود.
bale, dorost ast; jalase sâ'at-e noh shoru' mi-shavad.
Yes, that's correct; the meeting starts at nine.
2. Using درست است to endorse a proposal without saying so
⚠️ درست است.
dorost ast.
That's correct. Valid confirmation of truth, but potentially unclear as acceptance of a plan.
✅ با اجرای آزمایشی طرح موافقم.
bâ ejrâ-ye âzmâyeshi-ye tarh movâfeq-am.
I agree with implementing the plan on a trial basis.
3. Giving bare نه where scope matters
⚠️ نه، همهاش غلط است.
na, hame-ash ghalat ast.
No, all of it is wrong. Valid, but overbroad for a response that disputes only one inference.
✅ با آمار موافقم، اما این نتیجه از آن به دست نمیآید.
bâ âmâr movâfeq-am, ammâ in natije az ân be dast na-mi-âyad.
I accept the figures, but this conclusion does not follow from them.
4. Hedging without stating a position
⚠️ شاید به نظرم یکجورهایی ممکن است.
shâyad be nazar-am yek-jur-hâyi momken ast.
Maybe, in my view, it is sort of possible. Grammatical, but stacked hedges leave the intended position unclear.
✅ به نظرم پیشنهاد عملی است، به شرطی که بودجه تأمین شود.
be nazar-am pishnehâd amali ast, be sharti ke budje ta'min shavad.
In my view, the proposal is practical, provided that funding is secured.
Key Takeaways
- Use بله/آره for polarity, درست است for accuracy, and موافقم for a view or plan.
- Use چرا plus a repeated positive verb to contradict a negative question clearly.
- نه لزوما rejects a necessary inference rather than the whole preceding claim.
- Partial agreement should name both the accepted point and the limitation.
- Viewpoint frames soften social force, but clear reasons give disagreement substance.
- Match بله/آره and standard/colloquial grammar consistently to the setting.
