Building Conditional Arguments

A conditional argument does more than join an اگر “if” clause to a result. It tells the reader which premise is being entertained, how realistic it is, what follows from it, and whether the conclusion is necessary, possible, recommended, or merely likely. Good Persian makes those relations visible instead of asking tense morphology to carry the whole argument.

This page focuses on designing the complete argument. For the internal verb forms, review Real Conditionals with اگر and the unreal-condition pages linked above.

The argument frame

Argument jobFrequent Persian signalTypical forceRegister

explicit conditionدر صورتی کهprovided/in the event that(formal)
necessary conditionبه شرطی کهonly on condition thatneutral/formal
exceptionمگر اینکهunlessneutral/formal

English uses if for most of these jobs and often relies on intonation or modal verbs for the rest. Persian اگر is equally broad, but formal argument benefits from a more exact connector when the relation is “only if,” “unless,” or “otherwise.”

Real premises: state what follows

A real conditional keeps the premise open or treats it as an established pattern. The result should name the consequence, not merely repeat the condition in new words. Modal predicates help calibrate the inference: باید marks necessity, می‌توان ability or an available course, and ممکن است possibility.

اگر آمار کامل باشد، می‌توانیم نتیجه را با اطمینان بیشتری تفسیر کنیم.

agar âmâr kâmel bâshad, mi-tavânim natije râ bâ etminân-e bishtari tafsir konim.

If the data are complete, we can interpret the result with greater confidence. (academic; open premise plus qualified ability)

اگر هزینه‌ها دوباره افزایش یابد، باید بودجه‌ی مرحله‌ی دوم را بازنگری کنیم.

agar hazine-hâ do-bâre afzâyesh yâbad, bâyad budje-ye marhale-ye dovvom râ bâznegari konim.

If costs rise again, we must revise the budget for the second phase. (formal; possible condition and necessary response)

The first result is intentionally weaker than a categorical conclusion: complete data make confident interpretation possible, but do not guarantee a particular result. The second presents revision as required. Choosing the modal is part of the argument's truth conditions.

💡
Test the result with a question: does the premise make it necessary, merely possible, or advisable? Choose باید، می‌توان، بهتر است, or ممکن است accordingly.

Hypothetical premises: reason inside a model

A hypothetical does not assert that its premise is false. It may temporarily assume a model in order to explore consequences. Formal Persian often uses فرض کنیم “let us suppose” before an اگر clause, or uses در صورتی که to delimit an administrative scenario.

فرض کنیم تقاضا ثابت بماند؛ در این صورت، افزایش تولید قیمت را کاهش می‌دهد.

farz konim taqâzâ sâbet be-mânad; dar in surat, afzâyesh-e towlid qeymat râ kâhesh mi-dahad.

Let us suppose demand remains constant; in that case, increased production lowers the price. (academic; explicit modelling assumption)

در صورتی که مدارک تا پایان هفته دریافت شود، پرونده در همین دوره بررسی خواهد شد.

dar surati ke madârek tâ pâyân-e hafte daryâft shavad, parvande dar hamin dowre barrasi khâhad shod.

Provided the documents are received by the end of the week, the application will be reviewed in this cycle. (formal administrative)

در این صورت in the result means “in that case” and explicitly retrieves the whole preceding condition. It is useful when the condition is long; repeating اگر is not.

Counterfactuals: separate the missed world from the real one

Counterfactual arguments compare reality with an unreal alternative. A past perfect condition normally presents a missed past cause; a past-shaped result states what would have followed. Time expressions prevent the two timelines from blurring.

اگر پیش از اجرا با کاربران مشورت کرده بودیم، اکنون مجبور به بازطراحی سامانه نبودیم.

agar pish az ejrâ bâ kârbarân mashverat karde budim, aknun majbur be bâz-tarrâhi-ye sâmâne na-budim.

If we had consulted users before implementation, we would not now have to redesign the system. (formal; missed past cause, present consequence)

اگر هشدار را جدی گرفته بودند، خسارت کمتری وارد می‌شد.

agar hoshdâr râ jeddi gerefte budand, khasârat-e kamtari vâred mi-shod.

If they had taken the warning seriously, less damage would have occurred. (neutral formal; unreal past)

The past-shaped forms are not a Persian word-for-word equivalent of English would. Tense, aspect, and context jointly mark time and modal remoteness in each clause; expressions such as پیش از اجرا and اکنون make the two timelines explicit. Mixed Conditionals develops the tense pairings.

Necessary conditions, exceptions, and alternatives

به شرطی که makes the following requirement necessary. مگر اینکه introduces the exception that blocks the expected outcome. Both normally favor a subjunctive verb when the event is prospective.

پیشنهاد را می‌پذیریم، به شرطی که زمان تحویل تغییر نکند.

pishnehâd râ mi-pazirim, be sharti ke zamân-e tahvil taghyir na-konad.

We will accept the proposal, provided that the delivery date does not change. (formal negotiation; necessary condition)

جلسه فردا برگزار می‌شود، مگر اینکه اداره تعطیل اعلام شود.

jalase fardâ bargozâr mi-shavad, magar in-ke edâre ta'til e'lâm shavad.

The meeting will be held tomorrow unless the office is declared closed. (neutral formal; exception)

نسخه‌ی پشتیبان تهیه کن؛ وگرنه ممکن است همه‌ی فایل‌ها را از دست بدهی.

noskhe-ye poshtibân tahiye kon; va-garne momken ast hame-ye fâyl-hâ râ az dast be-dahi.

Make a backup; otherwise you may lose all the files. (neutral instruction; negative alternative)

💡
Do not translate unless as a negative اگر clause mechanically. Use مگر اینکه for an exception; use اگر ... نـ when the non-occurrence itself is the premise.

Scope: what exactly is conditional?

Place the condition before the result when it frames the entire conclusion. Put it after the result when the conclusion is the discourse focus and the condition is a qualification. With فقط “only,” position is crucial: فقط اگر means “only if,” whereas اگر فقط makes “only” modify material inside the condition.

فقط اگر منبع مستقل دیگری این ادعا را تأیید کند، می‌توان آن را قطعی دانست.

faqat agar manba'-e mostaqell-e digari in edde'â râ ta'yid konad, mi-tavân ân râ qat'i dânest.

Only if another independent source confirms this claim can it be regarded as certain. (academic; شرط necessary, not merely sufficient)

This sentence does not say that confirmation guarantees truth; it says that certainty is unavailable without confirmation. That difference between sufficient اگر and necessary فقط اگر is logical, not decorative.

A short deliberation

— اگر بودجه تصویب نشود، پروژه را متوقف می‌کنیم؟ — نه لزوما؛ شاید بتوانیم دامنه‌اش را محدود کنیم.

— agar budje tasvib na-shavad, porozhe râ motavaqqef mi-konim? — na lozuman; shâyad be-tavânim dâmane-ash râ mahdud konim.

— If the budget isn't approved, will we stop the project? — Not necessarily; perhaps we can reduce its scope. (formal workplace discussion; conclusion explicitly weakened)

The reply rejects an overstrong inference, not the condition. شاید and بتوانیم introduce an alternative consequence.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying English future marking into the if-clause

❌ اگر بودجه خواهد تصویب شود، کار را شروع می‌کنیم.

Incorrect — خواهد cannot precede an inflected passive تصویب شود; the open condition uses تصویب شود by itself.

✅ اگر بودجه تا فردا تصویب شود، کار را آغاز می‌کنیم.

agar budje tâ fardâ tasvib shavad, kâr râ âghâz mi-konim.

If the budget is approved by tomorrow, we will begin work.

2. Confusing اگر with فقط اگر

❌ پروژه فقط اگر بودجه‌ی کافی داشتن موفق می‌شود.

Incorrect — داشتن is an infinitive, not the finite condition required after اگر.

✅ پروژه فقط اگر بودجه‌ی کافی داشته باشد موفق می‌شود.

porozhe faqat agar budje-ye kâfi dâshte bâshad movaffaq mi-shavad.

The project succeeds only if it has sufficient funding.

3. Giving a modal two finite verbs

❌ اگر وقت داشته باشیم، می‌توانیم گزارش را می‌نویسیم.

Incorrect — after می‌توانیم, the dependent verb is subjunctive بنویسیم.

✅ اگر وقت کافی داشته باشیم، می‌توانیم گزارش را بازنویسی کنیم.

agar vaqt-e kâfi dâshte bâshim, mi-tavânim gozâresh râ bâznevisi konim.

If we have enough time, we can revise the report.

4. Using مگر اینکه and وگرنه as interchangeable pieces

❌ جلسه برگزار می‌شود، وگرنه اینکه مدیر نیاید.

Incorrect — وگرنه cannot combine with اینکه to introduce an exception clause.

✅ جلسه برگزار می‌شود، مگر اینکه مدیر نتواند بیاید.

jalase bargozâr mi-shavad, magar in-ke modir na-tavânad bi-âyad.

The meeting will be held unless the manager is unable to come.

Key Takeaways

  • Build a conditional argument as premise + calibrated consequence, not as a mechanical tense pair.
  • Use اگر broadly, به شرطی که for a necessary condition, مگر اینکه for an exception, and وگرنه for the alternative result.
  • Modal predicates state whether the conclusion is necessary, possible, or advisable.
  • Counterfactual clauses need clear timelines and a plausible causal link.
  • فقط اگر marks a necessary condition; its scope is different from ordinary اگر.
