Mixed Conditionals

A mixed conditional connects a counterfactual condition in one time period to an imagined result in another. اگر دیشب خوب خوابیده بودم، الان این‌قدر خسته نبودم means “If I had slept well last night, I would not be this tired now”: the missed cause belongs to last night, but the fatigue belongs to the present.

Persian does not create this meaning by adding a special equivalent of English would. Each clause receives the past-shaped form appropriate to its own time and aspect, while words such as دیشب، آن روز، الان make the timeline visible. The sentence must also express a plausible causal relation; merely putting two different tenses beside اگر does not make a useful mixed conditional.

The two principal timelines

Condition timeFrequent condition formResult timeFrequent result form
unreal past causeاگر + past perfect
اگر پذیرفته بودم
unreal present resultpast-shaped state, می‌ + past stem, or past modal
unreal present or lasting statepast-shaped state or می‌ + past stem
اگر صبور بودم
unreal past consequenceمی‌ + past stem, usually with an explicit past anchor

The surface forms can resemble ordinary past tenses, but their interpretation comes from the whole conditional. بودم can locate a real past state, an unreal present state, or a result that would hold now. Time adverbs and causal context do essential work.

💡
Draw two points on a timeline before choosing a verb: when would the condition have held, and when would its result hold? Build each clause for its own point instead of forcing both clauses into one memorized “conditional tense.”

Past cause, present result

For a past choice or event that did not happen, the اگر clause commonly uses the past perfect: past participle plus بودم، بودی، بود and so on. The present consequence uses a past-shaped state or imperfective because Persian employs those forms for present remoteness.

اگر آن پیشنهاد را پذیرفته بودم، الان در شیراز زندگی می‌کردم.

agar ân pishnehâd râ pazirofte budam, alân dar shirâz zendegi mi-kardam.

If I had accepted that offer, I would be living in Shiraz now. (neutral standard; past choice, present result)

اگر آن دوره را گذرانده بودم، الان می‌توانستم این دستگاه را تعمیر کنم.

agar ân dowre râ gozarânde budam, alân mi-tavânestam in dastgâh râ ta'mir konam.

If I had taken that course, I could repair this device now. (neutral standard; past cause, present ability)

اگر دیشب خوب خوابیده بودم، الان این‌قدر خسته نبودم.

agar dishab khub khâbide budam, alân in-qadar khaste na-budam.

If I had slept well last night, I would not be this tired now. (neutral standard)

The result زندگی می‌کردم does not mean that the imagined life in Shiraz is past. الان anchors it in the present, and past-imperfective morphology marks it as remote from reality. Similarly, می‌توانستم describes ability that would exist now.

An all-past conditional has a different result time:

اگر زنگ زده بودی، دیشب تا دیروقت منتظرت نمی‌ماندم.

agar zang zade budi, dishab tâ dir-vaqt montazer-at ne-mi-mândam.

If you had called, I would not have waited for you until late last night. (unreal past condition and past result)

اگر زنگ زده بودی، الان نگران نبودم.

agar zang zade budi, alân negarân na-budam.

If you had called, I would not be worried now. (mixed: unreal past condition, present result)

Only دیشب versus الان changes, but that difference changes the temporal relation of the whole sentence. For the unmixed past pattern, see Unreal Past Conditionals.

Present state, past consequence

The other direction begins with a state that the speaker treats as generally or presently false. Its imagined consequence lies in a completed past situation. The condition can use بودم، داشتم or past-imperfective morphology, just as an unreal-present conditional does; the result normally has a clear past-time phrase.

اگر آدم صبوری بودم، آن روز با مشتری بحث نمی‌کردم.

agar âdam-e saburi budam, ân ruz bâ moshtari bahs ne-mi-kardam.

If I were a patient person, I would not have argued with the customer that day. (lasting present trait, past consequence)

اگر از رانندگی نمی‌ترسیدم، دیشب خودم او را به فرودگاه می‌رساندم.

agar az rânandegi ne-mi-tarsidam, dishab khod-am u râ be forudgâh mi-rasândam.

If I were not afraid of driving, I would have driven him or her to the airport last night. (present disposition, past consequence)

اگر نزدیک‌تر زندگی می‌کردیم، هفته‌ی پیش برای اسباب‌کشی به کمکت می‌آمدیم.

agar nazdik-tar zendegi mi-kardim, hafte-ye pish barâ-ye asbâb-keshi be komak-at mi-âmadim.

If we lived closer, we would have come to help you move last week. (present location, past consequence)

The forms do not by themselves prove that the condition is still false now. The speaker supplies that interpretation by presenting patient character, fear of driving, or where we live as enduring traits. If the state applied only in the past, the same morphology could describe an ordinary unreal-past relation. This is why discourse plausibility matters more than an English-style numbered formula.

Modal verbs make the present result especially transparent. A completed past preparation can create an ability, permission, or option that would exist now.

اگر گواهی لازم را گرفته بودی، الان می‌توانستی مستقل کار کنی.

agar govâhi-ye lâzem râ gerefte budi, alân mi-tavânesti mostaqel kâr koni.

If you had obtained the required certificate, you could work independently now. (formal-neutral; past prerequisite, present ability)

اگر مدارک را به‌موقع فرستاده بودیم، حالا امکان پیگیری پرونده را داشتیم.

agar madârek râ be-mowqe' ferestâde budim, hâlâ emkân-e peygiri-ye parvande râ dâshtim.

If we had sent the documents on time, we would now be able to follow up the case. (formal-neutral)

A mixed conditional is infelicitous when the proposed condition does not reasonably explain the result. Grammar supplies a counterfactual link, not the missing real-world logic. Add enough context for the hearer to recover the causal path.

💡
Use explicit time anchors until the contrast feels automatic. آن روز، دیشب، هفته‌ی پیش locate a past consequence; الان، حالا، هنوز make a present result unmistakable.

A natural exchange

— چرا هنوز این‌قدر خسته‌ای؟ — اگه دیشب زود خوابیده بودم، الان حالم بهتر بود.

— cherâ hanuz in-qadar khaste-i? — age dishab zud khâbide budam, alân hâl-am behtar bud.

‘Why are you still so tired?’ ‘If I'd gone to sleep early last night, I'd feel better now.’ (informal, regional: Tehran; اگه marks colloquial speech)

The colloquial conjunction اگه replaces standard اگر, but the past-perfect condition and past-shaped present result follow the same architecture.

Common Mistakes

1. Building the past perfect from an inflected simple past

❌ اگر آن پیشنهاد را پذیرفتم بودم، الان در شیراز بودم.

Incorrect — past perfect uses the participle پذیرفته before بودم, not finite پذیرفتم.

✅ اگر آن پیشنهاد را رد نکرده بودم، الان همکار شما بودم.

agar ân pishnehâd râ radd na-karde budam, alân hamkâr-e shomâ budam.

If I had not rejected that offer, I would be your colleague now.

2. Using a finite past after a counterfactual modal

❌ اگر دوره را گذرانده بودم، می‌توانستم دستگاه را تعمیر کردم.

Incorrect — after می‌توانستم, the dependent action uses present subjunctive تعمیر کنم.

✅ اگر آموزش لازم را دیده بودم، حالا می‌توانستم دستگاه را راه‌اندازی کنم.

agar âmuzesh-e lâzem râ dide budam, hâlâ mi-tavânestam dastgâh râ râh-andâzi konam.

If I had received the necessary training, I could start the device now.

3. Stacking an indicative and counterfactual copula

❌ اگر دیشب خوابیده بودم، الان خسته هستم نبودم.

Incorrect — the imagined present state takes one past-shaped copula: نبودم.

✅ اگر دیشب استراحت کرده بودم، الان بی‌حوصله نبودم.

agar dishab esterâhat karde budam, alân bi-howsele na-budam.

If I had rested last night, I would not feel listless now.

4. Copying English auxiliary stacking into the past result

❌ اگر نزدیک‌تر زندگی می‌کردیم، هفته‌ی پیش کمکت خواهیم کردیم.

Incorrect — خواهیم cannot combine with the person-marked past کردیم; the unreal past result uses می‌کردیم here.

✅ اگر نزدیک‌تر زندگی می‌کردیم، هفته‌ی پیش کمکت می‌کردیم.

agar nazdik-tar zendegi mi-kardim, hafte-ye pish komak-at mi-kardim.

If we lived closer, we would have helped you last week.

Key Takeaways

  • A past unreal cause commonly uses the past perfect; a present unreal result uses a past-shaped state, imperfective, or modal.
  • A lasting unreal present state can explain a missed past consequence, whose time is made clear by context.
  • Persian has no separate conditional would auxiliary: morphology, time adverbs, and the causal relation work together.
  • Mixed conditionals must be plausible in discourse, not merely mixed in tense form.
