Tense Choice in Temporal Clauses

Persian temporal clauses choose tense and mood according to factuality and event order, not by mechanically copying the English verb. وقتی رسیدم can mean “when I arrived” in a past narrative or “when I arrive” when that arrival is the completed boundary for a future action. قبل از اینکه برسی instead presents the arrival as still pending and favors the subjunctive.

The main connectors on this page are وقتی “when,” قبل از اینکه “before,” بعد از اینکه “after,” and clausal تا “until/so that.” Their meanings constrain the verb, but none is a one-form switch independent of context.

A working map

Temporal relationCommon formTypical viewpoint
وقتی + present indicativeوقتی می‌رسمhabit, repeated overlap, or settled nonpast situation
وقتی + simple pastوقتی رسیدمcompleted past event or completed future boundary
وقتی + subjunctiveوقتی برسمopen, anticipated future event
قبل از اینکه + subjunctiveقبل از اینکه برسمlater event pending relative to main event
بعد از اینکه + pastبعد از اینکه رسیدمearlier event treated as completed first
تا + subjunctiveتا برسمendpoint, purpose, or awaited event

These are strong defaults, not a license to ignore meaning. A habitual بعد از اینکه clause can use an indicative present, and past narratives keep the past forms appropriate to their actual chronology.

وقتی with factual habits and past events

When وقتی introduces a repeated or established relationship, the ordinary indicative is natural in both clauses. When it introduces one completed past occasion, use the past.

وقتی از خانه کار می‌کنم، معمولا ناهار را زودتر می‌خورم.

vaqti az khâne kâr mi-konam, ma'mulan nâhâr râ zud-tar mi-khoram.

When I work from home, I usually eat lunch earlier. (neutral standard; habitual overlap)

وقتی به ایستگاه رسیدیم، قطار حرکت کرده بود.

vaqti be istgâh residim, qatâr harekat karde bud.

When we reached the station, the train had left. (neutral narrative; completed past boundary and earlier past perfect)

وقتی تلفن زنگ زد، داشتم ظرف‌ها را می‌شستم.

vaqti telefon zang zad, dâshtam zarf-hâ râ mi-shostam.

When the phone rang, I was washing the dishes. (neutral narrative; bounded event interrupts an ongoing event)

The temporal clause does not erase aspect. Simple past marks the bounded event; past progressive or past perfect in the main clause preserves its own viewpoint.

💡
Choose each verb from its role in the timeline. A linker orders the events, but the verbs still distinguish a boundary, an ongoing background, and an earlier completed result.

Future time after وقتی

For an anticipated future event, Persian has more than one natural choice. Subjunctive وقتی برسم views the event as open and pending. Simple-past وقتی رسیدم can present it as a completed boundary before the following future action. In everyday instructions, the past-shaped boundary is extremely common.

وقتی به هتل برسم، برایت پیام می‌فرستم.

vaqti be hotel beresam, barâ-yat payâm mi-ferestam.

When I get to the hotel, I'll send you a message. (careful standard; anticipated event in the subjunctive)

وقتی به خانه رسیدی، مستقیم به من زنگ بزن.

vaqti be khâne residi, mostaqim be man zang bezan.

When you get home, call me straight away. (neutral conversation; past form marks the completed future boundary)

Present indicative is also possible when a schedule or plan is treated as settled: وقتی فردا می‌آیی، مدارک را هم بیاور “when you come tomorrow, bring the documents too.” It has a more arranged, factual flavor than open subjunctive بیایی.

English normally forbids will in an ordinary when clause. Persian reaches a similar result by using its own nonfuture choices, but not through an English rule: mood and aspect still matter. Formal وقتی خواهی رسید is not the neutral translation of “when you arrive.”

💡
Do not read a Persian simple past by itself as calendar past. Inside وقتی/بعد از اینکه, it can mark an event as complete before a later future action.

قبل از اینکه: the later boundary is pending

قبل از اینکه locates the main event before another event. Because that later event is not yet realized from the main event's viewpoint, the subordinate verb strongly favors the subjunctive—even when the main clause is past.

قبل از اینکه جلسه شروع شود، تلفنتان را بی‌صدا کنید.

qabl az inke jalase shoru' shavad, telefon-etân râ bi-sedâ konid.

Before the meeting starts, silence your phone. (formal-neutral instruction; pending boundary)

پیش از اینکه هوا تاریک شود، به روستا برگشتیم.

pish az inke havâ târik shavad, be rustâ bar-gashtim.

We returned to the village before it got dark. (formal-neutral; past main clause, subjunctive later event)

The formal alternative پیش از اینکه follows the same mood tendency. See قبل از and بعد از for nominal complements such as قبل از جلسه and بعد از ناهار.

بعد از اینکه: completion before the next event

بعد از اینکه makes its clause the earlier event. Simple past naturally presents that event as complete, even when the whole sequence lies in the future. Persian retains that relative ordering rather than adding an explicit future auxiliary inside the subordinate clause.

بعد از اینکه گزارش را خواندم، نظرم را می‌گویم.

ba'd az inke gozâresh râ khândam, nazar-am râ mi-guyam.

After I read the report, I'll give my opinion. (neutral standard; future sequence with a past-shaped completed boundary)

بعد از اینکه مهمان‌ها رفتند، آشپزخانه را مرتب کردیم.

ba'd az inke mehmân-hâ raftand, âshpazkhâne râ morattab kardim.

After the guests left, we tidied the kitchen. (neutral past narrative; both events completed)

For a repeated routine, an indicative present is possible: بعد از اینکه شام می‌خوریم، کمی قدم می‌زنیم “after we eat dinner, we take a short walk.” Again, viewpoint controls the form.

تا as endpoint or purpose

Clausal تا often marks an endpoint that the main event waits for, or a purpose that has not yet been achieved. The subjunctive is therefore common. This differs from prepositional تا ساعت پنج, which contains no subordinate verb.

اینجا منتظر بمان تا برگردم.

injâ montazer bemân tâ bar-gardam.

Wait here until I come back. (neutral instruction; awaited endpoint)

پنجره را باز کردم تا هوای تازه وارد اتاق شود.

panjare râ bâz kardam tâ havâ-ye tâze vâred-e otâq shavad.

I opened the window so that fresh air could enter the room. (neutral standard; purpose)

Negative تا clauses use the negative subjunctive when an event is the unrealized boundary: تا جواب ندهی، تصمیم نمی‌گیریم “until you answer, we will not decide.”

A short dialogue

— کی فایل رو می‌فرستی؟ — وقتی رسیدم خونه، برات می‌فرستم.

— key fâyl ro mi-feresti? — vaqti residam khune, barât mi-ferestam.

— When will you send the file? — When I get home, I'll send it to you. (informal, regional: Tehran; past-shaped future boundary)

Colloquial Tehran changes forms such as خانه → خونه and may omit predictable material, but the temporal logic remains. Do not mix reduced nouns and pronouns with formal future خواهم فرستاد in an otherwise casual reply.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying English will into a when clause

❌ وقتی خواهم برسم، خبرت می‌کنم.

Incorrect hybrid — خواهم takes the bare past stem رسید; a neutral future time clause instead uses برسم or رسیدم without خواهم.

✅ وقتی به مقصد برسم، خبرت می‌کنم.

vaqti be maqsad beresam, khabar-at mi-konam.

When I reach the destination, I'll let you know.

2. Using the full infinitive as a finite clause

❌ قبل از اینکه سارا رسیدن، میز را آماده کردیم.

Incorrect — رسیدن is an infinitive; the pending event with singular subject سارا needs finite برسد.

✅ قبل از اینکه سارا برسد، نوشیدنی‌ها را آماده کردیم.

qabl az inke sârâ berasad, nushidani-hâ râ âmâde kardim.

Before Sara arrived, we prepared the drinks.

3. Forcing past tense onto every بعد از اینکه clause

❌ بعد از اینکه هر شب شام خوردیم، قدم می‌زنیم.

Incorrect for a regular present routine — the subordinate event should be habitual indicative.

✅ بعد از اینکه شام می‌خوریم، دور محله قدم می‌زنیم.

ba'd az inke shâm mi-khorim, dowr-e mahalle qadam mi-zanim.

After dinner, we walk around the neighborhood. (habitual present)

4. Moving می‌ away from its verb

❌ وقتی خانه می رسم، چای درست می‌کنم.

Incorrect spelling — می‌ is a bound prefix and attaches to رسم with a ZWNJ.

✅ وقتی از دانشگاه به خانه می‌رسم، اول چای درست می‌کنم.

vaqti az dâneshgâh be khâne mi-rasam, avval chây dorost mi-konam.

When I get home from university, I make tea first.

Key Takeaways

  • وقتی allows indicative, past, or subjunctive forms according to habit, completion, and openness.
  • A simple-past form can mark a completed boundary inside a future sequence: وقتی رسیدم.
  • قبل از اینکه strongly favors subjunctive for a later pending event.
  • بعد از اینکه readily uses past for an event completed before the next one, even in future reference.
  • Clausal تا commonly takes a subjunctive for an awaited endpoint or purpose.
