بودن in the Simple Past

The simple past of بودن “to be” uses past stem بود plus the regular past endings: بودم، بودی، بود، بودیم، بودید، بودند. It expresses past identity, description, location, presence, and states. Its negative is equally direct: prefix نـ to form نبودم، نبودی، نبود....

Unlike the present copula, past بودن is an independent word after its predicate: خسته بودم “I was tired,” در خانه بودند “they were at home.” English has only was and were; Persian marks all six persons and can omit a recoverable subject pronoun.

The complete paradigm

Third-person singular has no added ending: بود is both the past stem and the complete “was” form. Negation joins directly, with no space or ZWNJ: نبود.

Every form in the table is a full independent verb. This contrasts with present خسته‌ام, where the short copula attaches to its predicate. In the past, write خسته بودم as two words and let بودم carry person and tense.

دیروز تمام روز در خانه بودم.

diruz tamâm-e ruz dar khâne budam.

I was at home all day yesterday. (neutral standard; first singular location)

شما هم در نشست هفته‌ی پیش بودید؟

shomâ ham dar neshast-e hafte-ye pish budid?

Were you also at last week's meeting? (polite standard)

💡
Present هستم does not supply the past stem. The past series comes from infinitive بودن: بود + م، بود + ی، بود + zero....

Past identity and classification

A noun predicate comes before the form of بودن. It can be bare in ordinary classification: دانشجو بودم means “I was a student,” with no obligatory counterpart of English a. Because the finite verb identifies person, an overt pronoun appears mainly for contrast or clarity.

آن زمان سارا مدیر فروش بود و من دستیارش بودم.

ân zamân sârâ modir-e forush bud va man dastiyâr-ash budam.

At that time Sara was the sales manager, and I was her assistant. (neutral standard; past identity)

این ساختمان در گذشته یک مدرسه بود.

in sâkhtemân dar gozashte yek madrese bud.

This building used to be a school. (neutral standard; former classification)

The second sentence illustrates an English–Persian mismatch: simple بود plus a past-time expression can translate used to be. Neutral Iranian Persian does not require می‌بود for an ordinary former state.

Descriptions and states

Adjectives remain unchanged. من خسته بودم، بچه‌ها خسته بودند differ only in the person-number form of بودن; Persian adjectives have no gender or agreement morphology. With an inanimate plural such as اتاق‌ها, formal Persian may also use a singular verb, while plural agreement is natural when the items are treated as salient individuals.

هوا سرد بود، اما اتاق‌ها گرم بودند.

havâ sard bud, ammâ otâq-hâ garm budand.

The weather was cold, but the rooms were warm. (careful standard; singular and salient plural agreement)

بعد از سفر خیلی خسته بودیم و زود خوابیدیم.

ba'd az safar kheyli khaste budim va zud khâbidim.

After the trip we were very tired and went to bed early. (neutral standard; past state followed by event)

بودم can hold a state over an interval without می‌. Do not mechanically import the rule that all duration requires a past continuous. The lexical nature of “be” and the time phrase already support the durative reading.

💡
Use simple بودم for an ordinary past state, even when English says “used to be” or the state lasted for a while. می‌بودم is marked literary, formal, or construction-specific—not the neutral A2 default.

Location, presence, and existence

A location phrase can be the predicate: کتاب روی میز بود “the book was on the table.” With an indefinite noun, third-singular بود / نبود can express existence: یک صندلی خالی بود “there was an empty seat”; وقت نبود “there was no time.” Persian needs no dummy word corresponding to English there.

کلید‌ها داخل کشوی پایین بودند.

kelid-hâ dâkhel-e keshu-ye pâyin budand.

The keys were in the bottom drawer. (careful standard; location)

در سالن فقط یک صندلی خالی بود.

dar sâlon faqat yek sandali-ye khâli bud.

There was only one empty seat in the hall. (neutral standard; existence)

نزدیک هتل هیچ رستوران بازی نبود.

nazdik-e hotel hich restorân-e bâzi nabud.

There wasn't any open restaurant near the hotel. (neutral standard; negative existence)

The last sentence uses negative concord: هیچ... نبود creates one semantic negation. It does not become affirmative merely because English avoids some double-negative patterns.

Negation and contrast

Negative نبود replaces affirmative بود as a whole finite word after the predicate. It does not attach to the adjective or location phrase.

من ناراحت نبودم؛ فقط کمی نگران بودم.

man nârâhat nabudam; faqat kami negarân budam.

I wasn't upset; I was just a little worried. (careful spoken standard; corrective contrast)

وقتی تماس گرفتی، مدیر در دفتر نبود.

vaqti tamâs gerefti, modir dar daftar nabud.

When you called, the manager wasn't in the office. (neutral standard)

Present نیست and past نبود do not share the same visible stem, but their syntactic job is parallel. Review the present pattern on Negative Copula نیست.

Auxiliary بودن: a preview

Past بودن also follows a past participle to build a past perfect: رفته بودم “I had gone,” تمام شده بود “it had finished.” In that construction, the participle carries the lexical event and بودن locates the resulting state before another past reference point.

وقتی رسیدیم، فروشگاه بسته شده بود.

vaqti residim, forushgâh baste shode bud.

When we arrived, the shop had closed. (neutral standard; past-perfect preview)

This is not the same as a noun or adjective predicate merely because both end in بود. The full construction belongs on Past Perfect.

Colloquial Tehran forms

Tehran speech commonly reduces second plural بودید to بودین and third plural بودند to بودن; negatives are نبودین، نبودن (informal, regional: Tehran). In this register, بودن can therefore be either the dictionary infinitive or a finite “they were,” and sentence context distinguishes them.

دیشب شما هم خونه بودین؟

dishab shomâ ham khune budin?

Were you at home last night too? (informal, regional: Tehran; plural/polite)

نه، بچه‌ها خونه بودن، ولی ما سینما بودیم.

na, bachche-hâ khune budan, vali mâ sinamâ budim.

No, the kids were home, but we were at the cinema. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

1. Using the infinitive as a finite past form

❌ من دیروز بیمار بودن.

Incorrect — بودن is an infinitive and has no first-person ending.

✅ من دیروز بیمار بودم و سر کار نرفتم.

man diruz bimâr budam va sar-e kâr naraftam.

I was ill yesterday and didn't go to work.

2. Carrying هست into the past

❌ آن‌ها هفته‌ی پیش اینجا هستید.

Incorrect — past ‘be’ uses بود, and آن‌ها requires third plural.

✅ آن‌ها هفته‌ی پیش برای نمایشگاه اینجا بودند.

ân-hâ hafte-ye pish barâ-ye namâyeshgâh injâ budand.

They were here for the exhibition last week.

3. Prefixing negation to the adjective

❌ اتاق دیروز ناسرد بود.

Incorrect for ordinary copular negation — leave the adjective unchanged and negate بودن.

✅ اتاق دیروز سرد نبود، اما نمناک بود.

otâq diruz sard nabud, ammâ namnâk bud.

The room wasn't cold yesterday, but it was damp.

4. Attaching بود to its predicate

❌ جلسه‌طولانی‌بود.

Incorrect standard spacing — بود is an independent word after the predicate.

✅ جلسه‌ی دیروز طولانی بود.

jalase-ye diruz tulâni bud.

Yesterday's meeting was long.

Key Takeaways

  • Use بودم، بودی، بود، بودیم، بودید، بودند for the six past persons.
  • Put independent بودن after noun, adjective, and location predicates.
  • Negation is نبودم... نبودند, with نـ joined directly to بود.
  • Simple بود can describe a durable or former state; neutral Persian does not require می‌بود.
  • After a past participle, بودن serves as the auxiliary of the past perfect.
