Before and After Clauses

Persian uses قبل از اینکه “before” and بعد از اینکه “after” before finite clauses. These connectors make the order of two events explicit even when the clauses appear in reverse narrative order. The embedded verb still expresses person, tense, and mood.

When the two events share a subject, Persian can often use the shorter قبل از / بعد از + infinitive. With different subjects, the finite اینکه clause is normally clearer because it identifies who performs the embedded event. Review the nominal behavior of this form in Long Infinitives as Verbal Nouns.

Construction map

RelationDifferent or explicit subjectShared-subject alternativeTendency

afterبعد از اینکه + finite clauseبعد از + infinitivecompleted event favors past/perfect

qabl az in-ke mehmân-hâ be-rasand, miz râ âmâde mi-konim.

Before the guests arrive, we will prepare the table. (neutral; different subject and prospective subjunctive)

ba'd az in-ke jalase tamâm shod, hame be kâfe raftand.

After the meeting ended, everyone went to a café. (neutral; completed sequence)

Before: an event not yet realized

Because the “before” event is still pending at the reference point, an open future clause commonly uses the subjunctive.

qabl az in-ke tasmim-e nehâyi râ be-giri, bâ vakil mashverat kon.

Before you make the final decision, consult a lawyer. (neutral advice; prospective subjunctive)

pish az ân-ke havâ târik shavad, bâyad be rustâ be-rasim.

Before it gets dark, we must reach the village. (formal/literary-neutral variant

The second connector is more formal; ordinary conversation prefers Careful standard Persian normally keeps the subjunctive even in past narratives: قبل از اینکه بیاید، زنگ زد. Some colloquial speakers align the embedded verb with a completed narrative, but learners should not use that as the default.

💡
The subjunctive after “before” reflects nonrealization at the reference point, not a rigid rule attached to the connector. Past narrative viewpoint can change the choice.

After: a completed anchor

“After” normally anchors the main event to an already completed event, so simple past or perfect forms are common.

ba'd az in-ke gozâresh râ ferestâdam, motavajjeh-e yek eshtebâh shodam.

After I sent the report, I noticed an error. (neutral past sequence)

ba'd az in-ke dâru râ khorde-i, nim sâ'at esterâhat kon.

After you have taken the medicine, rest for half an hour. (neutral instruction; completion emphasized)

Completion is relative to the main event, not necessarily to speech time. A future “after” clause is still nonactual and can therefore use the subjunctive, as in

Infinitive alternatives

When no participant is expressed, قبل از رفتن and بعد از رسیدن package the event as a verbal noun, and the main-clause actor is normally understood as its actor. Formal nominalizations can instead name a participant through ezâfe, as in پس از ورود رئیس “after the director’s arrival,” but a finite clause is clearer for beginners when two actors could compete.

qabl az khoruj panjare-hâ râ be-bandid.

Before leaving, close the windows. (formal instruction; nominalized event)

ba'd az rasidan be hotel, mostaqim khâbidim.

After reaching the hotel, we went straight to sleep. (neutral; shared subject we)

If an unexpressed participant could accidentally inherit the wrong main subject, restore a finite clause. A formal event nominal with an ezâfe participant is a separate compact option.

ba'd az in-ke tâksi rasid, mâ vasâyel râ pâ'in bordim.

After the taxi arrived, we took the luggage downstairs. (different subjects made explicit in a finite clause)

💡
With no expressed participant, use the infinitive when one actor controls both events. A finite clause is clearest when the embedded event has its own subject; formal nominalizations such as پس از ورود رئیس are a separate compact option.

Clause position

The temporal clause can lead and frame the sequence, or follow as background information.

be to khabar mi-daham ba'd az in-ke bâ modir sohbat konam.

I'll let you know after I speak with the manager. (neutral; main promise foregrounded)

Common Mistakes

Incorrect — رسیدن is an infinitive inside a finite different-subject clause.

qabl az in-ke mehmân-hâ be-rasand, ghazâ râ garm kon.

Before the guests arrive, warm the food.

Incorrect — the اینکه clause needs a finite predicate.

ba'd az in-ke jalase tamâm shod, birun raftim.

After the meeting ended, we went outside.

Incorrect — the connector is قبل از اینکه, and از cannot be stranded inside it.

qabl az in-ke be-ravi, be man zang be-zan.

Before you leave, call me.

Incorrect — the main subject ما requires رفتیم, not رفت. The event nominal رسیدن تاکسی can itself name the taxi as its participant.

ba'd az in-ke tâksi rasid, mâ râh oftâdim.

After the taxi arrived, we set off.

Key Takeaways

  • Use قبل از اینکه/بعد از اینکه + finite clause as the clearest default when the embedded subject differs.
  • “Before” commonly favors subjunctive for a still-unrealized event; “after” commonly anchors a completed event.
  • With one shared subject, قبل از/بعد از + infinitive is compact and natural; formal event nominals can also take an ezâfe participant.
  • Either temporal clause can come first; position controls framing, not basic chronology.
