Until and So That with تا | Farsi Grammar

The connector تا has two central clause meanings. It marks a temporal endpoint, “until,” in صبر کن تا برگردم “wait until I return”; and it introduces a purpose, “so that/in order to,” in آهسته حرف بزن تا بچه بیدار نشود “speak quietly so the child does not wake.” The same spelling works because both meanings look forward to a boundary or intended result.

Mood, the main predicate, and real-world logic resolve the meaning. A verb of waiting or continuation favors an endpoint; an intentional action followed by a desired consequence favors purpose. The required nonasserted forms are reviewed in Present Subjunctive Formation.

Ask what the تا-clause does: does its event stop a waiting interval, or is its event the intended result of the first action? That semantic test is stronger than translation alone.

Temporal endpoint

With an open future endpoint, the subordinate verb commonly takes the subjunctive. In a completed past narrative, the simple past can locate the endpoint as a fact.

تا جواب قطعی نگیریم، قرارداد را امضا نمی‌کنیم.

tâ javâb-e qat'i na-girim, qarârdâd râ emzâ nemi-konim.

Until we get a definite answer, we will not sign the contract. (formal-neutral; negative main clause continues to endpoint)

در کتابخانه ماندم تا باران بند آمد.

dar ketâbkhâne mândam tâ bârân band âmad.

I stayed in the library until the rain stopped. (neutral past narrative; realized endpoint)

از صبح کار کردیم تا بالاخره مشکل حل شد.

az sobh kâr kardim tâ bâlâkhare moshkel hall shod.

We worked from morning until the problem was finally solved. (neutral; completed endpoint)

With a negative main clause, an initial تا-clause commonly also appears negative: تا نیاید، شروع نمی‌کنیم means “We will not start until he comes.” The subordinate نـ does not make non-arrival the endpoint; it forms the conventional negative-until frame. Compare affirmative صبر می‌کنیم تا بیاید “We will wait until he comes.”

Purpose and prevention

A purpose clause presents an intended outcome, not an asserted fact, so the subjunctive is expected. Different subjects are normal.

شماره‌ات را بنویس تا بعدا با تو تماس بگیرم.

shomâre-at râ be-nevis tâ ba'dan bâ to tamâs be-giram.

Write down your number so I can contact you later. (neutral; different subjects)

متن را ساده‌تر کردیم تا همه بتوانند آن را بفهمند.

matn râ sâde-tar kardim tâ hame be-tavânand ân râ be-fahmand.

We simplified the text so that everyone could understand it. (formal; achieved purpose still expressed as intended result)

آرام در را ببند تا کسی بیدار نشود.

ârâm dar râ be-band tâ kasi bidâr na-shavad.

Close the door quietly so that nobody wakes up. (neutral; negative purpose/prevention)

Purpose تا can translate English to: آمدم تا صحبت کنم. Persian uses a finite subjunctive, not a bare infinitive, especially when person reference matters.

Negate the outcome you want to prevent inside the purpose clause: تا ... نشود. Do not move that negation to the main action.

Ambiguity and repair

رفتم تا او را ببینم strongly favors purpose: “I went in order to see him.” ماندم تا او را دیدم favors endpoint: “I stayed until I saw him.” If both readings remain plausible, add برای اینکه for purpose or تا زمانی که for duration.

برای اینکه مزاحم همسایه‌ها نشویم، موسیقی را کم کردیم.

barâ-ye in-ke mozâhem-e hamsâye-hâ na-shavim, musiqi râ kam kardim.

So as not to disturb the neighbors, we turned the music down. (neutral; purpose made explicit)

تا زمانی که پزشک اجازه بدهد، باید در خانه بمانی.

tâ zamâni ke pezeshk ejâze be-dahad, bâyad dar khâne be-mâni.

You must stay home until the doctor gives permission. (formal-neutral; endpoint made explicit)

A short exchange

— چرا زود آمدی؟ — آمدم تا قبل از شلوغی کارم را تمام کنم.

— cherâ zud âmadi? — âmadam tâ qabl az sholughi kâr-am râ tamâm konam.

— Why did you come early? — I came so I could finish my work before it got busy. (neutral conversation; purpose)

Common Mistakes

❌ صبر کن تا من برگشتن.

Incorrect — the تا clause needs a finite verb.

✅ صبر کن تا از فروشگاه برگردم.

sabr kon tâ az forushgâh bar-gardam.

Wait until I return from the shop.

❌ آهسته حرف بزن تا بچه نمی‌شود بیدار.

Incorrect — negative purpose uses the subjunctive predicate بیدار نشود.

✅ آهسته حرف بزن تا بچه بیدار نشود.

âheste harf be-zan tâ bachche bidâr na-shavad.

Speak quietly so the child does not wake up.

❌ آمدم تا با شما صحبت می‌کنم.

Incorrect — purpose تا takes subjunctive صحبت کنم, not an independent indicative.

✅ آمدم تا درباره‌ی قرارداد صحبت کنم.

âmadam tâ darbâre-ye qarârdâd sohbat konam.

I came to talk about the contract.

❌ تا جواب رسیدن، اینجا می‌مانیم.

Incorrect — رسیدن is an infinitive, not the finite future endpoint.

✅ تا پاسخ رسمی برسد، اینجا می‌مانیم.

tâ pâsokh-e rasmi be-rasad, injâ mi-mânim.

We will stay here until the official response arrives.
