Persian بااین‌حال and از طرف دیگر both turn away from a preceding claim, but they organize different relations. بااین‌حال means “nevertheless”: the first claim creates an expectation, and the second holds despite it. از طرف دیگر means “on the other hand”: the speaker changes evaluative perspective and adds a consideration that may pull the decision another way.

Concession versus contrasting perspective

MarkerRelation between the two partsTypical argument shapeRegister
P suggests that Q would not hold, but Q does holdobstacle followed by counterexpected factformal-neutral; careful speech
Q evaluates the issue from another sideone consideration balanced against anotherneutral-formal
ولیgeneral contrastordinary conversational turnneutral conversation
از سوی دیگرanother analytical perspectivebalanced formal argumentformal/academic

The structural test is expectation. If P makes not-Q likely, بااین‌حال، Q is a concession. If P and Q are simply two dimensions of a decision—cost versus quality, speed versus risk—use

💡
Try inserting “despite that.” If it preserves the relation, choose بااین‌حال. If the move means “now consider another side,” choose

بااین‌حال: the expected obstacle does not win

The first statement establishes a fact that would normally discourage or prevent the second. بااین‌حال announces that the second remains true.

râh-e kuhestâni barfi bud; bâ-in-hâl, goruh pish az târiki be panâhgâh resid.

The mountain path was snowy; nevertheless, the group reached the shelter before dark. (formal-neutral concession)

gozâresh chand naqs-e joz'i dârad. bâ-in-hâl, natije-ye asli-ye ân qâbel-e e'temâd ast.

The report has a few minor flaws. Nevertheless, its main conclusion is reliable. (academic evaluation)

The marker does not deny P. The road really was snowy; the flaws really exist. Concession preserves the obstacle and rejects only its expected consequence.

Modern standard spelling commonly joins the expression as بااین‌حال, with a نیم‌فاصله before حال. Spaced با این حال is also widely encountered, including in the manifest title, but a document should choose one convention consistently.

از طرف دیگر: change the evaluative dimension

از طرف دیگر introduces another relevant perspective. It commonly weighs advantages against disadvantages, one stakeholder against another, or immediate effects against long-term effects.

ejâre-ye in daftar monâseb ast; az taraf-e digar, raft-o-âmad be ân barâ-ye bishtar-e kârkonân doshvâr khâhad bud.

The rent for this office is reasonable; on the other hand, commuting there will be difficult for most employees. (formal-neutral evaluation)

in taghyir kâr-e moshtariyân râ sâde-tar mi-konad. az taraf-e digar, bâr-e bishtari bar tim-e poshtibâni mi-gozârad.

This change makes things easier for customers. On the other hand, it places a greater burden on the support team. (formal discussion; stakeholder shift)

Neither second fact is surprising in the way required by concession. It simply counts from another point of view.

از طرف دیگر ... explicitly constructs the balance:

از یک طرف باید هزینه‌ها را کاهش دهیم؛ از طرف دیگر، نباید کیفیت خدمات پایین بیاید.

az yek taraf bâyad hazine-hâ râ kâhesh dahim; az taraf-e digar, na-bâyad keyfiyyat-e khedamât pâyin biyâyad.

On the one hand, we must reduce costs; on the other hand, service quality must not fall. (formal balanced argument)

از سوی دیگر ... is more elevated. Everyday discussion also uses از طرفی ...

Minimal contrast with the same topic

Consider two ways to follow the claim that a course is demanding:

این دوره بسیار فشرده است؛ بااین‌حال، بیشتر دانشجویان آن را با موفقیت تمام می‌کنند.

in dowre besyâr feshorde ast; bâ-in-hâl, bishtar-e dâneshjuyân ân râ bâ movaffaqiyyat tamâm mi-konand.

The course is very intensive; nevertheless, most students complete it successfully. (counterexpected success)

in dowre besyâr feshorde ast; az taraf-e digar, madrak-e ân barâ-ye estekhdâm arzesh-e ziyâdi dârad.

The course is very intensive; on the other hand, its certificate is highly valuable for employment. (cost-benefit perspective)

The first says students succeed despite difficulty. The second weighs difficulty against a separate advantage.

Paragraph placement and argument structure

Both markers can open a new sentence or paragraph. Paragraph-initial بااین‌حال usually challenges an expectation created by the whole preceding passage, not merely its last sentence. Paragraph-initial از طرف دیگر announces a new dimension in a balanced evaluation.

In careful writing, place a full stop or semicolon before the marker and a Persian comma after it. This makes the scope visible:

شواهد اولیه از این فرضیه حمایت می‌کنند. بااین‌حال، حجم نمونه برای نتیجه‌گیری قطعی کافی نیست.

shavâhed-e avvaliye az in farziye hemâyat mi-konand. bâ-in-hâl, hajm-e nemune barâ-ye natije-giri-ye qat'i kâfi nist.

The preliminary evidence supports this hypothesis. Nevertheless, the sample is too small for a firm conclusion. (academic paragraph turn)

kâhesh-e mâliyât momken ast sarmâye-gozâri râ bishtar konad. az su-ye digar, darâmad-e omumi râ dar kutâh-moddat kâhesh mi-dahad.

A tax reduction may increase investment. On the other hand, it lowers public revenue in the short term. (academic balanced analysis)

The markers organize independent propositions. Full subordinate concession with اگرچه or با اینکه is treated on concession.

💡
A paragraph connector inherits its first argument from prior discourse. Before using it, make sure the reader can identify exactly what expectation or perspective the new paragraph responds to.

Spoken alternatives

Conversation usually prefers ولی for an ordinary contrast. بااین‌حال is possible in careful speech, especially when the speaker wants to sound measured. Informal Tehran speech may use از اون طرف for another perspective, but the same words can also refer literally to a physical side; context and intonation must disambiguate.

— masir dur-tar-e, vali khalvat-tar-e. — âre, az un taraf benzin-e bishtari masraf mi-konim.

— The route is longer, but quieter. — Yeah, on the other hand, we’ll use more fuel. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

1. Using concession for an expected result

damâ-ye havâ zir-e sefr raft; bâ-in-hâl, âb yakh zad.

The sentence is grammatical, but concession misrepresents the relation: freezing is expected after subzero temperatures, not counterexpected.

damâ-ye havâ zir-e sefr raft; dar natije, âb-e makhzan yakh zad.

The temperature fell below zero; as a result, the water in the tank froze.

2. Using از طرف دیگر for an unrelated topic

in tarh budje-ye ziyâdi mi-khâhad. az taraf-e digar, tavallod-e khâhar-am fardâ-st.

The clauses are grammatical, but a birthday is not another perspective on the project budget.

in tarh budje-ye ziyâdi mi-khâhad. dar zemn, tavallod-e khâhar-am fardâ-st va bâyad zud-tar be-ravam.

This project requires a large budget. By the way, tomorrow is my sister’s birthday, so I need to leave earlier. (topic aside)

3. Confusing discourse طرف with physical location

Incorrect for ‘the bank is on the other side of the street’ — the location needs آن طرف خیابان or طرف دیگر خیابان.

bânk ân taraf-e khiyâbân, kenâr-e dârukhâne ast.

The bank is on the other side of the street, next to the pharmacy.

4. Using a formal marker for every casual but

chây dâram; bâ-in-hâl, qahve na-dâram.

Grammatical, but unnecessarily weighty for an ordinary kitchen contrast.

chây dâram, vali qahve na-dâram.

I have tea, but I don’t have coffee. (neutral conversation)

Key Takeaways

  • بااین‌حال introduces a fact that holds despite an expectation raised by prior discourse.
  • از طرف دیگر shifts to another evaluative dimension or stakeholder perspective.
  • Use ولی for light conversational contrast and از سوی دیگر for formal balanced analysis.
  • Sentence- or paragraph-initial placement followed by a comma makes scope clear.
  • Do not use either marker unless the earlier discourse supplies the expectation or perspective it responds to.
