Persian اگرچه and با اینکه introduce a factual concession: one clause states a real circumstance that might normally block or weaken the other, yet the other clause still holds. اگرچه خسته بودم، به جلسه رفتم means “Although I was tired, I went to the meeting.”
The construction is not a condition. The concessive clause normally presents accepted information, while the main clause supplies the outcome that runs against an expectation. اگرچه is common in careful and formal writing; با اینکه is neutral across writing and conversation and is especially natural in speech.
The construction map
| Connector | Core meaning | Register | Common continuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| اگرچه | although, even though | careful standard; formal writing | اما / ولی optional |
| با اینکه | despite the fact that, although | neutral standard; frequent in speech | ولی frequent in conversation |
| هرچند | although, admittedly | formal-neutral; often written | اما frequent |
This page focuses on the first two. هرچند belongs to the same semantic family but often has a more written, “admittedly” flavor.
agarche havâ sard bud, piyâde tâ khâne raftim.
Although the weather was cold, we walked home. (careful standard; factual past concession)
bâ inke vaqt-e kami dâshtim, gozâresh râ daqiq khândim.
Although we had little time, we read the report carefully. (neutral standard)
The cold weather and limited time are not hypothetical. They are admitted facts, and the second clause defeats the ordinary prediction “therefore we did not walk/read carefully.”
Concession is not condition
The shared letters اگر can mislead learners. Conditional اگر opens a possibility; concessive اگرچه grants a fact or premise and says it did not determine the outcome.
agar bârân be-bârad, barnâme râ laghv mi-konim.
If it rains, we will cancel the plan. (neutral standard; open condition)
agarche bârân mi-bârad, barnâme râ laghv nemi-konim.
Although it is raining, we are not cancelling the plan. (careful standard; accepted fact plus unexpected outcome)
The conditional uses subjunctive ببارد because the future rain is open. The concessive uses indicative میبارد because the rain is presented as actual. اگرچه does not automatically license a subjunctive merely because it begins with اگر. Real Conditionals with اگر develops the conditional mood contrast.
Future concession is possible, but mood follows the status of the embedded claim. اگرچه فردا روز شلوغی خواهد بود، جلسه را برگزار میکنیم presents tomorrow’s busyness as a confident prediction; حتی اگر فردا شلوغ باشد “even if tomorrow is busy” instead opens a hypothetical concession. These are not interchangeable.
اگرچه: written and carefully balanced concession
اگرچه is especially comfortable in essays, reports, presentations, and careful speech. It often introduces a full clause before the main assertion.
agarche in ravesh arzân-tar ast, zamân-e bishtari mi-barad.
Although this method is cheaper, it takes more time. (formal-neutral comparison)
agarche pazhuhesh mahdud ast, natâyej-e avvaliye ahammiyat dârand.
Although the study is limited, the preliminary results are important. (academic)
Writers use this pattern to acknowledge a limitation before advancing the principal claim. The clause-first order makes the concession a frame; the reader then interprets the main clause against it.
با اینکه: neutral and conversational
با اینکه has the same core relation but is less bookish in ordinary interaction. Its parts should be learned as one connective; translating them individually as “with this that” does not reveal the grammar.
bâ inke dishab dir khâbid, sobh zud bidâr shod.
Although she went to bed late last night, she woke up early. (neutral conversation)
bâ inke masir ro balad na-budim, gom na-shodim.
Although we didn’t know the route, we didn’t get lost. (informal, regional: Tehran; colloquial
bâ inke chand bâr zang zadam, kasi javâb na-dâd.
Although I called several times, nobody answered. (neutral conversation)
The last example contrasts effort with lack of result. The concessive relation can therefore connect positive with negative clauses, negative with positive clauses, or two positive facts; what matters is the violated expectation, not surface polarity.
Clause order and information structure
Concessive-first order is common when the obstacle is already known or must be acknowledged before the main point:
با اینکه قیمتش بالاست، ارزش خرید دارد.
The main clause may also come first:
پیشنهاد را قبول کردم، با اینکه حقوقش کمتر بود.
pishnehâd râ qabul kardam, bâ inke hoquq-ash kam-tar bud.
I accepted the offer, although its salary was lower. (neutral standard; postposed background concession)
Postposing makes the acceptance the immediate news and adds the lower salary afterward as a qualification. Both orders are grammatical; the difference is information packaging. The general placement options for dependent clauses are treated on Subordinate Clauses before and after the Matrix.
Optional اما and ولی
Persian commonly reinforces the turn with اما “but” (formal-neutral) or ولی (neutral; frequent in speech):
اگرچه دیر رسیدیم، ولی بخش اصلی برنامه را دیدیم.
agarche dir residim, vali bakhsh-e asli-ye barnâme râ didim.
Although we arrived late, we still saw the main part of the program. (neutral careful speech; reinforced turn)
bâ inke chand nokte mobham mânde ast, ammâ mi-tavân gozâresh râ montasher kard.
Although a few points remain unclear, the report can nevertheless be published. (formal)
English style guides often reject although ... but. That restriction does not transfer: اگرچه ... اما are grammatical Persian. Reinforcement is optional, however, and dense formal prose may prefer one overt connector rather than two.
A short exchange
— bâ inke bârun shadid-e, bâz ham mi-khây beri? — âre, vali bâ mâshin mi-ram, na piyâde.
— Even though the rain is heavy, do you still want to go? — Yes, but I’ll go by car, not on foot. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Treating factual اگرچه as an open condition
Incorrect tense and mood for an admitted past fact — باشد leaves the state open while ماند reports a completed event.
agarche dishab khaste bud, tâ âkhar-e jalase mând.
Although she was tired last night, she stayed until the end of the meeting.
2. Treating plain اگر as though it marked concession
Plain اگر is grammatical, but it opens a condition rather than admitting an obstacle that reality overcame. Compare the ordinary prediction with the concessive result:
✅ اگر قیمت بالا باشد، آن را نمیخرم.
agar qeymat bâlâ bâshad, ân râ nemi-kharam.
If the price is high, I won’t buy it. (grammatical open condition)
bâ inke qeymat bâlâ bud, ân râ kharidam.
Although the price was high, I bought it. (factual concession)
3. Copying English copula order
Incorrect neutral Persian word order — the adjective predicate precedes
agarche u kheyli khaste bud, be kâr edâme dâd.
Although she was very tired, she continued working.
4. Using an infinitive after با اینکه
Incorrect — the concessive clause needs the finite predicate سرد بود, not the infinitive بودن.
bâ inke havâ sard bud, birun neshastim.
Although the weather was cold, we sat outside.
Key Takeaways
- اگرچه and با اینکه introduce an admitted fact whose expected consequence does not occur.
- اگرچه is more at home in careful or formal prose; با اینکه is neutral and frequent in conversation.
- Factual concession normally uses indicative tense; do not treat اگرچه as plain conditional اگر.
- Concessive clauses may precede or follow the main clause, with a difference in information packaging.
- اما / ولی may reinforce the turn in Persian even though English often avoids although ... but.
