Correlatives هم ... هم، یا ... یا، نه ... نه

Persian correlative pairs place a marker before each coordinated alternative: هم ... هم “both ... and,” یا ... یا “either ... or,” and نه ... نه “neither ... nor.” Their shared principle is parallelism: each marker should introduce material of the same grammatical and semantic size.

This page focuses on coordinating phrases and clauses. It does not replace the detailed account of verbal negation in نه ... نه, nor the separate use of یا to ask a choice question.

Three pairs, three logical relations

PairLogical relationWhat the sentence assertsNeutral example core
هم X هم YadditionX and Y are both includedهم دقیق هم سریع
یا X یا Yalternativeone of X and Y is selectedیا امروز یا فردا
نه X نه Yjoint rejectionX and Y are both excludedنه حضوری نه آنلاین

All three pairs occur in standard writing and everyday speech. Formal prose often adds و between longer noun phrases—هم مدیر و هم معاون—and uses commas between clause-sized members. Conversation more readily omits و when the repeated markers already make the structure clear.

این برنامه هم سریع است هم ساده.

in barnâme ham sari' ast ham sâde.

This program is both fast and simple. (neutral standard; parallel adjective predicates)

یا امروز قرارداد را امضا می‌کنیم یا مذاکره را ادامه می‌دهیم.

yâ emruz qarârdâd râ emzâ mi-konim yâ mozâkere râ edâme mi-dahim.

Either we sign the contract today or we continue the negotiations. (formal-neutral; alternative clauses)

نه تماس برقرار شد، نه سامانه‌ی اینترنتی باز شد.

na tamâs bar-qarâr shod, na sâmâne-ye interneti bâz shod.

Neither did the call connect nor did the online system open. (neutral standard; two rejected clauses)

💡
Draw brackets after the markers. If the two brackets contain comparable phrases or clauses, the relation will usually be clear; if one contains a noun and the other an unrelated whole event, repair the parallelism.

هم ... هم includes both members

Place هم immediately before each constituent included in the pair. The constituents may be subjects, objects, modifiers, prepositional phrases, predicates, or full clauses.

هم مدیر پروژه و هم مترجم در جلسه حاضر بودند.

ham modir-e porozhe va ham motarjem dar jalase hâzer budand.

Both the project manager and the interpreter were present at the meeting. (formal-neutral; coordinated human subjects)

برای سفر هم بلیت خریدم هم هتل رزرو کردم.

barâ-ye safar ham belit kharidam ham hotel rezerv kardam.

For the trip, I both bought the ticket and booked a hotel. (neutral conversation; two predicates with one subject)

این کلاس هم برای مبتدی‌ها مفید است هم برای زبان‌آموزان پیشرفته.

in kelâs ham barâ-ye mobtadi-hâ mofid ast ham barâ-ye zabân-âmuzân-e pishrafte.

This class is useful both for beginners and for advanced learners. (neutral standard; shared predicate omitted in the second member)

In the last example, مفید است is understood after the second phrase. Ellipsis is licensed because the two برای phrases have the same role. General rules for recoverable material appear on Coordination and Shared Constituents.

Agreement with هم ... هم subjects

Two distinct human subjects normally trigger plural agreement: هم لیلا هم برادرش آمدند. Copying English proximity agreement or treating the second noun alone as controller produces a nonneutral singular verb.

Inanimate coordination allows more flexibility. Formal Persian often uses singular agreement when two inanimate members are construed as one combined topic or when the predicate precedes them; plural is also possible when they are individuated.

هم کیفیت صدا و هم سرعت اتصال بهتر شده است.

ham keyfiyat-e sedâ va ham sor'at-e ettesâl behtar shode ast.

Both sound quality and connection speed have improved. (formal; singular agreement with a combined inanimate assessment)

هم پنجره‌ها و هم درهای قدیمی عوض شده‌اند.

ham panjare-hâ va ham dar-hâ-ye qadimi avaz shode-and.

Both the windows and the old doors have been replaced. (neutral standard; individuated inanimate groups with plural agreement)

This variation cannot be reduced to a single “nearest noun” rule. Animacy, individuation, and whether the pair is packaged as one topic all matter.

یا ... یا selects an alternative

Repeated یا frames the alternatives explicitly. In statements it commonly communicates an exhaustive practical choice: one route or the other must be taken. It can coordinate phrases or full clauses.

پاسخ نهایی را یا امروز می‌فرستند یا فردا صبح.

pâsokh-e nahâyi râ yâ emruz mi-ferestand yâ fardâ sobh.

They will send the final answer either today or tomorrow morning. (neutral standard; alternative time phrases)

برای ورود یا باید رمز داشته باشید یا مدیر شما را تأیید کند.

barâ-ye vorud yâ bâyad ramz dâshte bâshid yâ modir shomâ râ ta'yid konad.

To enter, either you must have a code or the manager must approve you. (formal-neutral; alternative conditions)

یا نازنین کلید را دارد یا پیمان.

yâ Nâzanin kelid râ dârad yâ Peymân.

Either Nazanin or Peyman has the key. (neutral standard; one exclusive human subject, singular agreement)

When the alternatives have separate subjects and predicates, repeat enough material to make agreement clear. When exactly one of two singular people is possible, singular دارد reflects the exclusive choice. If each alternative is a whole clause, each verb agrees with its own subject.

An interrogative such as چای می‌خواهید یا قهوه؟ uses یا to request a selection. That interactional pattern, its intonation, and یا نه are covered on Choice Questions with یا. Here یا ... یا is analyzed as coordination inside statements and clause complexes.

نه ... نه rejects both members

Paired نه places both alternatives under one negative coordination. In the clearest basic pattern, the repeated particles themselves supply negation and the finite verb may remain morphologically affirmative.

این تصمیم نه هزینه‌ها را کم می‌کند نه کیفیت را بهتر می‌کند.

in tasmim na hazine-hâ râ kam mi-konad na keyfiyat râ behtar mi-konad.

This decision neither reduces costs nor improves quality. (formal-neutral; parallel predicates stated in full)

نه من وقت آزاد داشتم، نه او حال صحبت کردن.

na man vaqt-e âzâd dâshtam, na u hâl-e sohbat kardan.

Neither did I have free time, nor was she in the mood to talk. (neutral conversation; parallel clauses with ellipsis)

Do not infer a general rule that Persian negative words take positive verbs. Negative indefinites such as هیچ‌کس require negative concord, and expanded نه ... نه structures can contain additional negative material. The dedicated page نه ... نه and Negative Coordination gives the polarity diagnostics. The present page’s concern is the parallel clause architecture.

Scope follows placement

Moving the repeated markers changes what is jointly added, selected, or rejected.

سارا هم گزارش را نوشت هم نمودارها را آماده کرد.

Sârâ ham gozâresh râ nevesht ham nemudâr-hâ râ âmâde kard.

Sara both wrote the report and prepared the charts. (neutral standard; predicate scope)

هم سارا گزارش را نوشت هم امید نمودارها را آماده کرد.

ham Sârâ gozâresh râ nevesht ham Omid nemudâr-hâ râ âmâde kard.

Both Sara wrote the report and Omid prepared the charts. (neutral standard; whole-clause scope)

The first shares سارا and pairs her actions. The second coordinates two complete propositions. This bracketing difference is why each marker should sit directly at the left edge of the material it scopes over.

💡
Read from each marker to the end of its parallel unit. هم [گزارش را نوشت] هم [نمودارها را آماده کرد] differs from هم [سارا ...] هم [امید ...].

A short exchange

— برای ارائه چه چیزهایی آماده کرده‌اید؟ — هم اسلایدها را کامل کرده‌ایم هم نسخه‌ی چاپی گزارش را؛ اما یا من ارائه می‌دهم یا همکارم.

— barâ-ye erâ'e che chiz-hâ-yi âmâde karde-id? — ham eslâyd-hâ râ kâmel karde-im ham noskhe-ye châpi-ye gozâresh râ; ammâ yâ man erâ'e mi-daham yâ hamkâr-am.

— What have you prepared for the presentation? — We have completed both the slides and the printed report; but either I will present or my colleague will. (formal-neutral workplace exchange)

Common Mistakes

1. Reading a single هم as the paired correlative

A single هم can mean “also/too” and is perfectly grammatical, but it does not explicitly mark both edges of a هم ... هم pair. Do not map English prenominal both mechanically onto one Persian هم.

✅ سارا و نادر هم در جلسه صحبت کردند.

Sârâ va Nâder ham dar jalase sohbat kardand.

Sara and Nader also spoke at the meeting. (grammatical single هم meaning ‘also’)

✅ هم سارا و هم نادر در جلسه صحبت کردند.

ham Sârâ va ham Nâder dar jalase sohbat kardand.

Both Sara and Nader spoke at the meeting.

2. Mixing a finite clause with an infinitive

❌ هم امروز می‌آیم هم فردا آمدن.

Incorrect parallelism — one member is finite and the other is an infinitive.

✅ هم امروز می‌آیم هم فردا دوباره برمی‌گردم.

ham emruz mi-âyam ham fardâ do-bâre bar-mi-gardam.

I’m coming today and I’m coming back again tomorrow.

3. Using singular agreement for two distinct people

❌ هم پزشک و هم پرستار رسید.

Incorrect neutral agreement — two distinct human subjects normally take a plural verb.

✅ هم پزشک و هم پرستار به‌موقع رسیدند.

ham pezeshk va ham parastâr be-mowqe' residand.

Both the doctor and the nurse arrived on time.

4. Mixing یا and نه inside a neither–nor pair

❌ نه شنبه یا نه یکشنبه دفتر باز است.

Incorrect correlative pairing — joint rejection uses نه before both alternatives without یا.

✅ دفتر نه شنبه باز است نه یکشنبه.

daftar na shanbe bâz ast na yekshanbe.

The office is open neither Saturday nor Sunday.

Key Takeaways

  • هم ... هم includes both members, یا ... یا selects an alternative, and نه ... نه rejects both.
  • Put each marker immediately before a parallel phrase or clause of comparable scope.
  • Two coordinated people normally take plural agreement; exclusive یا ... یا with one selected singular person normally takes singular agreement.
  • Ellipsis is natural when the omitted predicate or clause material is unambiguous.
  • Consult the dedicated negation page for verbal polarity inside نه ... نه rather than treating all three pairs as morphologically identical.
