Choice Questions with یا

Persian forms a choice question by linking alternatives with یا “or”: چای می‌خواهید یا قهوه؟ “Would you like tea or coffee?” The alternatives may be nouns, time phrases, prepositional phrases, predicates, or complete clauses, but they must represent comparable answers to the same open choice.

The repeated material is often stated only once. In امروز می‌آیید یا فردا؟, the second alternative means “or are you coming tomorrow?” even though only فردا is pronounced. Persian listeners recover the shared clause from the first alternative and the position of یا.

The main patterns

Scope of the choicePatternExample
one noun phraseX یا Yچای یا قهوه؟
one time/place/manner phraseshared clause + X یا Yامروز یا فردا؟
two complete propositionsclause 1 یا clause 2می‌آیی یا خانه می‌مانی؟
explicit either–orیا X یا Yیا نقدی یا با کارت؟
one proposition versus its denialclause + یا نه؟می‌آیی یا نه؟

برای صبحانه چای می‌خورید یا قهوه؟

barâ-ye sobhâne chây mi-khorid yâ qahve?

Do you drink tea or coffee for breakfast? (polite neutral conversation; beverage choice)

جلسه را امروز برگزار کنیم یا فردا صبح؟

jalase râ emruz bar-gozâr konim yâ fardâ sobh?

Shall we hold the meeting today or tomorrow morning? (neutral standard; time choice)

خودت می‌آیی یا کسی را می‌فرستی؟

khod-at mi-âyi yâ kasi râ mi-feresti?

Are you coming yourself, or are you sending someone? (neutral conversation; two complete alternatives)

💡
Locate the smallest material that changes. Everything shared may appear once; the phrases on the two sides of یا supply competing values for the same slot.

Alternative scope and ellipsis

Compare what یا coordinates:

با قطار می‌روید یا با اتوبوس؟

bâ qatâr mi-ravid yâ bâ otobus?

Are you going by train or by bus? (polite neutral speech; means of travel)

به شیراز می‌روید یا به اصفهان؟

be Shirâz mi-ravid yâ be Esfahân?

Are you going to Shiraz or to Isfahan? (polite neutral speech; destination choice)

شما به شیراز می‌روید یا همکارتان به اصفهان می‌رود؟

shomâ be Shirâz mi-ravid yâ hamkâr-etân be Esfahân mi-ravad?

Are you going to Shiraz, or is your colleague going to Isfahan? (formal-neutral; whole clauses contrasted)

In the first two questions, the subject and verb are shared, so the second alternative contains only the contrasting phrase. In the third, subject and destination both change, so two full clauses make the scope transparent.

Persian word order is flexible, but alternatives should remain structurally interpretable. امروز می‌آیی یا با قطار؟ offers a time against a means of transport and therefore fails as a normal closed choice unless an unusually rich context supplies two whole scenarios.

The wh-form کدام also requests selection, but the structures differ. کدام مسیر را انتخاب می‌کنید؟ asks the listener to identify one route from an understood set; مسیر شمالی را انتخاب می‌کنید یا مسیر جنوبی را؟ spells out the alternatives. See Questioning Possession and Identity for کدام.

Two, three, or more alternatives

With two alternatives, a single یا is sufficient. With longer lists, formal-neutral Persian commonly separates earlier items with commas and puts یا before the final item, just as English uses final or.

برای ناهار سوپ، سالاد یا ساندویچ می‌خواهید؟

barâ-ye nâhâr sup, sâlâd yâ sândvich mi-khâhid?

Would you like soup, salad, or a sandwich for lunch? (polite neutral speech; three-item choice)

Repeating یا highlights exclusivity or presents alternatives one by one: یا ... یا ... “either ... or ...”. It is useful when the alternatives are long or when the speaker insists that a decision be made.

یا تا پایان امروز پاسخ بدهید یا درخواست را پس بگیرید؛ کدام را ترجیح می‌دهید؟

yâ tâ pâyân-e emruz pâsokh be-dahid yâ darkhâst râ pas be-girid; kodâm râ tarjih mi-dahid?

Either respond by the end of today or withdraw the request; which do you prefer? (formal; explicit either–or alternatives)

یا تو زنگ بزن یا من پیام بفرستم؟

yâ to zang be-zan yâ man payâm be-ferestam?

Should you call, or should I send a message? (neutral conversation; competing plans)

The first یا is not obligatory in every question. It packages the pair as an explicit exhaustive choice and can sound more decisive than the simple pattern.

Final یا نه “or not”

Final یا نه؟ contrasts an entire proposition with its negation. It turns one stated possibility into a binary decision rather than supplying a second content alternative.

فردا در جلسه شرکت می‌کنی یا نه؟

fardâ dar jalase sherkat mi-koni yâ na?

Are you attending the meeting tomorrow or not? (neutral familiar question; direct binary choice)

بالاخره این پیشنهاد را قبول دارید یا نه؟

bâlâkhare in pishnehâd râ qabul dârid yâ na?

Do you ultimately accept this proposal or not? (formal-neutral; pressure for a decision)

یا نه؟ may sound impatient when بالاخره or a firm falling contour shows that the speaker wants closure. In formal documents, یا خیر is a more official alternative (formal): آیا رضایت دارید یا خیر؟ “Do you consent or not?” Everyday conversation strongly favors یا نه.

💡
Use یا نه only when the second alternative is the denial of the whole proposition. If the choice is tea versus coffee, name قهوه; it is not equivalent to “tea or not.”

Intonation signals a closed set

In careful pronunciation, a nonfinal alternative often carries a continuing rise, while the last alternative receives the closing contour. This prosodic packaging tells the listener that a selection—not simply yes or no—is expected.

Compare:

  • قهوه می‌خورید؟ is a yes-no question: بله / نه answers it.
  • قهوه می‌خورید یا چای؟ asks which drink: قهوه / چای answers it.

Question punctuation cannot display the internal rises and falls, so parallel structure and explicit alternatives matter especially in writing.

Natural answer forms

An answer normally supplies the chosen item and may omit shared material:

— اتاق رو به حیاط را می‌خواهید یا اتاق رو به خیابان را؟ — اتاق رو به حیاط را، لطفا.

— otâq-e ru be hayât râ mi-khâhid yâ otâq-e ru be khiyâbân râ? — otâq-e ru be hayât râ, lotfan.

— Would you like the room facing the courtyard or the one facing the street? — The courtyard-facing room, please. (polite standard)

For یا نه, answer with real-world polarity and repeat the verb when misunderstanding matters: بله، شرکت می‌کنم or نه، شرکت نمی‌کنم. This is especially useful after a negative proposition; Negative Questions and Answers explains corrective چرا.

Register and آیا

Choice questions need no introductory آیا. Formal questionnaires may use it before a full alternative question (formal), but ordinary conversation does not: آنلاین پرداخت می‌کنید یا حضوری؟ is natural and complete. Repeated آیا in casual exchanges sounds bureaucratic rather than more grammatical.

Colloquial Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran) contracts verbs and object marker را, while یا remains یا: این‌و می‌خوای یا اون‌و؟ “Do you want this one or that one?” Keep those contractions out of formal examples.

این‌و می‌خوای یا اون‌و؟

in-o mi-khây yâ un-o?

Do you want this one or that one? (informal, regional: Tehran)

A short dialogue

— برای برگشت بلیت قطار بگیریم یا اتوبوس؟ — قطار. — پنج‌شنبه حرکت کنیم یا جمعه؟ — جمعه صبح بهتره.

— barâ-ye bar-gasht belit-e qatâr be-girim yâ otobus? — qatâr. — panj-shanbe harekat konim yâ jom'e? — jom'e sobh behtar-e.

— For the return, should we get train or bus tickets? — Train. — Should we leave Thursday or Friday? — Friday morning is better. (neutral conversation with a colloquial final copula)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding English do-support

❌ می‌کنید شما چای می‌خواهید یا قهوه؟

Incorrect — Persian does not insert کردن as a question auxiliary.

✅ شما چای سبز می‌خواهید یا چای سیاه؟

shomâ chây-e sabz mi-khâhid yâ chây-e siyâh?

Would you like green tea or black tea?

2. Coordinating answers to different questions

❌ امروز می‌آیی یا با تاکسی؟

Incorrect as a normal closed choice — امروز answers ‘when,’ while با تاکسی answers ‘how.’

✅ امروز با تاکسی می‌آیی یا با اتوبوس؟

emruz bâ tâksi mi-âyi yâ bâ otobus?

Are you coming by taxi or by bus today?

3. Using و when only one alternative is intended

❌ برای دسر کیک و بستنی می‌خواهید؟

Incorrect for the intended either–or question — و asks about the combination ‘cake and ice cream.’

✅ برای دسر کیک می‌خواهید یا بستنی؟

barâ-ye deser keyk mi-khâhid yâ bastani?

Would you like cake or ice cream for dessert?

4. Inserting یا نه inside the proposition

❌ فردا یا نه به جلسه می‌آیی؟

Incorrect — یا نه follows the complete proposition whose truth is being decided.

✅ فردا به جلسه‌ی هماهنگی می‌آیی یا نه؟

fardâ be jalase-ye hamâhangi mi-âyi yâ na?

Are you coming to the coordination meeting tomorrow or not?

Key Takeaways

  • یا coordinates alternatives that answer the same question or fill the same semantic slot.
  • Shared clause material is often omitted from the second alternative.
  • یا ... یا ... explicitly packages an either–or choice; final یا نه opposes a whole proposition to its denial.
  • A choice question normally receives the selected alternative, not merely an uninformative yes or no.
