As Soon As: همین که and به محض اینکه

Persian همین که and به محض اینکه mean “as soon as”: the event in their clause creates a boundary, and the main event follows with little or no relevant delay. همین که رسیدم، زنگ زدم means “As soon as I arrived, I called.”

همین که is neutral and frequent in conversation and narrative. به محض اینکه is more formal and exact, common in instructions, news, administrative prose, and careful speech. Both differ from plain وقتی که “when,” which locates an event without necessarily promising immediate succession.

For the wider system of simultaneous, habitual, and sequential “when” clauses, see Time Clauses with وقتی که. Here the added meaning is immediate transition at the boundary.

Form and register

ConnectorRegisterTypical nuanceNominal alternative
همین کهneutral standard; frequent in speechthe moment that, as soon asهمین موقع in other structures
به محض اینکهformal-neutral; especially writtenimmediately upon the occurrence ofبه محض ورود
وقتی کهneutral in all registerswhen; immediate sequence not encodedهنگام ورود formal

hamin ke be khâne residam, kafsh-hâ-yam râ dar-âvardam.

As soon as I got home, I took off my shoes. (neutral conversation; completed past sequence)

be mahz-e inke natije e'lâm shod, vebgâh az dastres khârej shod.

As soon as the result was announced, the website went offline. (formal-neutral report; immediate past sequence)

The ezafe after محض is pronounced in به محض اینکه and به محض ورود, though it is not written after the consonant-final noun. The full connective should not be shortened to به محض که.

💡
Ask whether immediacy is asserted. وقتی رسیدم only locates the next event at arrival time; همین که رسیدم presents arrival as its immediate trigger.

Completed past events

When both events actually occurred in the past, simple past is the default for two bounded events. The connector supplies their tight temporal relation; Persian does not need an extra adverb corresponding to English immediately unless the speaker wants additional emphasis.

hamin ke dar râ bâz kardam, bu-ye qahve râ hes kardam.

As soon as I opened the door, I smelled coffee. (neutral narrative)

be mahz-e inke qatâr istâd, mosâferân piyâde shodand.

As soon as the train stopped, the passengers got off. (formal-neutral narrative)

hamin ke esm-ash râ shenid, labkhand zad.

The moment she heard his name, she smiled. (neutral narrative; first event triggers a reaction)

The ordering is not merely “A happened before B.” It conventionally presents A as the boundary after which B begins. A long intervening activity would contradict this relation unless explicitly framed as irrelevant.

Past perfect is possible when earlier background must be shown, but it is not automatically required in the connector clause. همین که رسیدم، فهمیدم او رفته بود uses simple رسیدم for the boundary and past perfect رفته بود for a still earlier departure.

Future events and the subjunctive

For an event that has not yet occurred, Persian commonly uses a present subjunctive in the connector clause and a present form, imperative, or modal expression in the main clause.

hamin ke pâsokh râ be-giram, barâ-yat mi-ferestam.

As soon as I get the reply, I’ll send it to you. (neutral standard; open future boundary)

be mahz-e inke sabt-nâm-e shomâ ta'yid shavad, payâmak daryâft mi-konid.

As soon as your registration is confirmed, you will receive a text message. (formal administrative instruction; passive subjunctive)

hamin ke cherâgh sabz shavad, harekat konid.

As soon as the light turns green, proceed. (formal-neutral instruction)

English also avoids will in many as soon as clauses, but Persian additionally marks the open boundary with subjunctive morphology. An explicit future auxiliary such as خواهد رسید is not the normal choice inside this prospective time clause.

Future meaning with a past-shaped form

In instructions and everyday planning, Persian also uses a simple-past-shaped perfective form for an event expected to be completed before the next action: همین که رسیدی، زنگ بزن. Its future reference comes from the situation and the following imperative.

hamin ke be edâre residi, khabar-am kon.

As soon as you get to the office, let me know. (neutral conversation; past-shaped completed future boundary)

be mahz-e inke nâme râ tahvil dâdid, resid râ negah dârid.

As soon as you have handed in the letter, keep the receipt. (formal instruction; completed future boundary viewed perfectively)

The choice between برسی and رسیدی is not a simple formal-versus-informal split. برسی presents an open prospective event; رسیدی packages the boundary as completed before the instruction applies. Both can be standard when their viewpoint fits.

💡
In a future instruction, interpret a past-shaped form from the timeline: رسیدی، زنگ بزن does not report a past arrival. It means “once your arrival is complete, call.”

Clause order and focus

The connector clause commonly comes first because it establishes the trigger. It may follow the main clause when the promised action is the immediate focus.

bâ shomâ tamâs mi-girim be mahz-e inke madârek kâmel shavand.

We will contact you as soon as the documents are complete. (formal; promised result foregrounded)

be-hat zang mi-zanam hamin ke az metro biyâm birun.

I’ll call you as soon as I come out of the metro. (informal, regional: Tehran)

The postposed version often sounds like a promise followed by its timing condition. Both orders preserve immediate succession.

همین که beyond time

همین که can also mean “the mere fact that” or “just because” in other contexts: همین که آمدی خوب است “the fact that you came is good.” A temporal reading is strongest when its clause names a bounded event and the other clause follows in sequence. Learners must therefore use the whole discourse, not translate the connector mechanically.

A short exchange

— key natije ro be-ham mi-gi? — hamin ke khod-am motma'en besham, be-hat zang mi-zanam. — pas montazer-e tamâs-at mi-munam.

— When will you tell me the result? — As soon as I’m sure myself, I’ll call you. — Then I’ll wait for your call. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

1. Translating “as soon as” as به زودی که

Incorrect connector — به زودی means ‘soon’ but does not introduce an as-soon-as clause with که.

hamin ke be maqsad be-resam, zang mi-zanam.

As soon as I reach the destination, I’ll call.

2. Using an explicit future inside the time clause

Incorrect neutral future time clause — Persian normally uses the present subjunctive برسد here.

be mahz-e inke qatâr be-resad, savâr mi-shavim.

As soon as the train arrives, we’ll get on.

3. Using به محض که before a finite clause

Incorrect connector shape — a finite clause takes

be mahz-e inke dar bâz shod, mosâferân vâred shodand.

As soon as the door opened, the passengers entered.

4. Using a prospective subjunctive in a completed past narrative

Incorrect neutral timeline — the prospective subjunctive برسم conflicts with the completed past narrative; use رسیدم.

dishab hamin ke be khâne residam, barq qat' shod.

Last night, as soon as I got home, the power went out.

Key Takeaways

  • همین که is neutral and conversational; به محض اینکه is more formal and exact.
  • Both assert immediate or pragmatically immediate succession, unlike plain
  • Completed past sequences normally use past forms; open future boundaries commonly use the subjunctive.
  • A past-shaped form such as رسیدی can mark a completed future boundary before an instruction.
  • The trigger clause may precede or follow the main clause depending on which information is foregrounded.
