As Long As and Until: تا وقتی که

Persian تا وقتی که connects two clauses across an interval. It can mean “as long as/while,” when one situation holds throughout another, or “until,” when one event marks the endpoint of a continuing action or state.

The connector alone does not select the English translation. Aspect, negation, and the kinds of predicates reveal the relation: تا وقتی که اینجا هستی، راحت باش maintains a situation for the duration of a stay; تا وقتی که برگردی، منتظر می‌مانم maintains waiting up to the return boundary.

Two timeline structures

as long as / whilecontinuing state or conditionholds throughout that stateboth overlap
untileventual boundarycontinues up to that boundarymain interval ends when boundary occurs
not until / unless-untilnegative open conditionoften remains negativeno change before the boundary

tâ vaqti ke injâ zendegi mi-konim, be mâshin niyâz na-dârim.

As long as we live here, we do not need a car. (neutral standard; overlapping duration condition)

tâ vaqti ke pezeshk bar-gardad, dar otâq-e entezâr mi-mânim.

We will stay in the waiting room until the doctor returns. (neutral standard; open future endpoint)

The first subordinate predicate زندگی می‌کنیم is durative and coextends with not needing a car. The second برگردد is a bounded prospective event that ends the waiting.

💡
Look at the main predicate. A state such as “you are welcome” usually overlaps the whole condition; a durative action such as “wait, stay, keep working” naturally extends up to an endpoint.

Duration condition: “as long as”

For a present fact, regular indicative forms are natural. The construction states that the main claim remains valid throughout the subordinate situation.

tâ vaqti ke havâ rowshan ast, mi-tavânim birun kâr konim.

As long as it is light, we can work outside. (neutral standard; present duration condition)

tâ vaqti ke ejâre râ be-mowqe' mi-dahid, sâheb-khâne moshkeli na-dârad.

As long as you pay the rent on time, the landlord has no problem. (neutral standard; maintained condition)

tâ vaqti ke khod-at râzi hasti, man ham mokhâlefati na-dâram.

As long as you yourself are satisfied, I have no objection either. (neutral conversation; stance conditional on a continuing state)

This use overlaps with a real condition: if the condition ceases, the main commitment may cease. Unlike plain اگر, however, تا وقتی که explicitly profiles the duration over which the condition continues.

In past narration, both states can take past forms:

تا وقتی که برق داشتیم، کارگاه باز بود.

tâ vaqti ke barq dâshtim, kârgâh bâz bud.

As long as we had electricity, the workshop was open. (neutral past narrative; overlapping states)

Endpoint: “until”

For an open future endpoint, the subordinate verb commonly takes the present subjunctive. The main clause contains a durative predicate such as ماندن، منتظر بودن، ادامه دادن, or a negative predicate that remains true before the boundary.

tâ vaqti ke jalase tamâm shavad, telefon-am râ khâmush negah mi-dâram.

I will keep my phone off until the meeting ends. (neutral standard; future endpoint)

injâ mi-neshinam tâ vaqti ke tâksi be-resad.

I’ll sit here until the taxi arrives. (neutral conversation; postposed endpoint clause)

tâ vaqti ke hame-ye madârek kâmel na-shavand, parvande barrasi nemi-shavad.

The case will not be reviewed until all the documents are complete. (formal administrative rule; negative boundary frame)

In the third sentence, نشوند describes the interval during which completeness has not yet been reached, and بررسی نمی‌شود states what remains blocked throughout it. Two negative forms do not cancel; they belong to two linked propositions.

Positive endpoint versus negative pre-boundary condition

Persian can frame the same practical timeline from either side:

تا وقتی که پاسخ برسد، صبر می‌کنیم.

tâ vaqti ke pâsokh be-resad, sabr mi-konim.

We will wait until the reply arrives. (neutral standard; positive endpoint)

tâ vaqti ke pâsokh na-resad, tasmim nemi-girim.

We will not decide until the reply arrives. (neutral standard; negative condition holds before endpoint)

The first foregrounds waiting and names the arrival boundary positively. The second foregrounds a blocked decision and says that non-arrival maintains that block. English often uses a positive until it arrives in both translations; Persian frequently makes the pre-boundary negative condition explicit.

💡
With تا ... نمی‌, read each negation locally: “while the boundary has not occurred, the main change does not occur.” This is temporal logic, not double-negative cancellation.

Tense and mood come from the timeline

Present indicative marks a current or habitual duration: تا وقتی که اینجا هستی. Present subjunctive marks an open future endpoint: تا وقتی که برگردی. Simple past can mark a realized endpoint in a completed narrative.

tâ vaqti ke bârân band niyâmad, az kâfe birun na-raftim.

We did not leave the café until the rain stopped. (neutral past narrative; realized boundary viewed from the preceding negative interval)

tâ vaqti ke mâdar-ash dar bimârestân bud, har ruz be u sar mi-zad.

As long as his mother was in the hospital, he visited her every day. (neutral past narrative; repeated activity throughout a state)

There is no universal “tense after تا وقتی که.” The connective provides the interval relation; verb forms locate that interval as current, habitual, completed, or still open.

Clause order and shorter variants

An initial clause frames everything that follows and normally takes a comma. A postposed clause adds the limit after the main commitment: منتظر می‌مانم تا وقتی که برگردی.

تا وقتی که and تا زمانی که are standard; تا زمانی که is somewhat more formal. Short تا وقتی is common in neutral conversation. Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran) also uses تا موقعی که, with colloquial verb forms.

tâ mowqe'i ke bar-gardi, hamin-jâ montazer-at mi-munam.

I’ll wait for you right here until you come back. (informal, regional: Tehran)

The shorter bare تا can also mark an endpoint. Until and So That with تا explains how bare تا is distinguished from purpose “so that.” The longer تا وقتی که is explicitly temporal and therefore useful when ambiguity matters.

Until is not as soon as

تا وقتی که describes what continues before a boundary. همین که highlights what happens immediately after it.

tâ vaqti ke forushgâh baste bud, jelow-ye dar montazer mândim; hamin ke bâz shod, vâred shodim.

As long as the shop was closed, we waited in front of the door; as soon as it opened, we went in. (neutral past narrative; duration versus immediate aftermath)

A short exchange

— tâ key injâ mi-muni? — tâ vaqti ke ta'mir-e mâshin tamum beshe. ba'd-esh mostaqim mi-ram khune.

— How long are you staying here? — Until the car repair is finished. Then I’m going straight home. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

1. Using a full infinitive after که

Incorrect — the endpoint clause needs a finite verb agreeing with مدیر.

tâ vaqti ke modir bar-gardad, injâ mi-mânim.

We will stay here until the manager returns.

2. Using an explicit future auxiliary in the endpoint

Incorrect neutral future time clause — the open endpoint normally uses

tâ vaqti ke tâksi be-resad, dâkhel-e sâkhtemân sabr konid.

Wait inside the building until the taxi arrives.

3. Reversing the intended safety instruction

The positive command below is grammatical, but it says the opposite of the usual safety instruction. Because it has a real reading, it must not be treated as a malformed Persian sentence:

✅ تا وقتی که چراغ سبز نشود، حرکت کنید.

tâ vaqti ke cherâgh sabz na-shavad, harekat konid.

Move while the light has not turned green. (grammatical, but the opposite of the intended safety instruction)

tâ vaqti ke cherâgh sabz na-shavad, harekat na-konid.

Do not move until the light turns green.

4. Using تا وقتی که for immediate succession

Incorrect for the intended ‘as soon as’ relation — no continuing interval is expressed.

hamin ke be khâne residam, fowri dush gereftam.

As soon as I got home, I took a shower.

Key Takeaways

  • تا وقتی که means “as long as” when two situations overlap and “until” when one event ends a continuing interval.
  • Indicative forms suit current, habitual, or completed facts; subjunctive forms suit open future endpoints.
  • Persian often uses تا ... نمی‌ to describe what remains blocked before the endpoint.
  • Initial and postposed clauses are both possible; the longer connector makes temporal meaning clearer than bare تا.
  • Use همین که, not تا وقتی که, when the intended relation is immediate succession after a boundary.
