Persian در نتیجه and بنابراین both connect earlier information to what follows. در نتیجه most readily introduces an outcome in a causal sequence—“as a result.” بنابراین presents the following statement as a conclusion warranted by evidence—“therefore.” They often overlap, but the difference between an event that ensues and an inference a speaker draws predicts many natural choices.
Outcome versus inference
| Marker | Preferred relation | Frequent context | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| در نتیجه | an earlier situation produces a later state or event | reports, narratives, explanations | formal-neutral |
| بنابراین | earlier evidence licenses a conclusion, decision, or recommendation | argument, analysis, formal decisions | formal/academic; also careful speech |
| برای همین | conversational consequence or personal reason | everyday explanation | neutral conversation |
| پس | inference or practical next step | dialogue | neutral to informal |
The distinction is not absolute. A conclusion may itself cause a decision, and در نتیجه can introduce an abstract consequence. Use the table as a discourse preference, not as a claim that one marker is grammatical and the other impossible.
در نتیجه: an ensuing consequence
در نتیجه points backward to a cause or set of circumstances and presents the next proposition as their outcome. It commonly follows a full stop or semicolon.
بارندگی سه روز ادامه داشت؛ در نتیجه، سطح آب رودخانه بهسرعت بالا آمد.
bârandegi se ruz edâme dâsht; dar natije, sath-e âb-e rudkhâne be-sor'at bâlâ âmad.
The rain continued for three days; as a result, the river level rose rapidly. (formal-neutral report)
سامانه برای چند ساعت از دسترس خارج شد. در نتیجه، ثبت سفارشها عقب افتاد.
sâmâne barâ-ye chand sâ'at az dastres khârej shod. dar natije, sabt-e sefâresh-hâ aqab oftâd.
The system was unavailable for several hours. As a result, order processing was delayed. (formal report)
The connector claims more than chronological succession. It presents the outage as responsible for the delay. If the evidence shows only that one event followed another, use a time expression such as بعد از آن rather than an unsupported causal connector.
در نتیجه also occurs inside a clause before the resulting predicate:
چند نیروی باتجربه شرکت را ترک کردند و در نتیجه سرعت تولید کاهش یافت.
chand niru-ye bâ-tajrobe sherkat râ tark kardand va dar natije sor'at-e towlid kâhesh yâft.
Several experienced employees left the company, and consequently production slowed. (formal-neutral)
Here و coordinates the clauses, while در نتیجه specifies their causal relation. The marker itself does not subordinate either clause.
بنابراین: a warranted conclusion
بنابراین is common when a writer moves from premises to an inference, policy, recommendation, or limitation. Academic Persian uses it heavily, but good prose uses it only when the inferential step is real.
سه آزمایش مستقل نتیجهی یکسانی داشتند؛ بنابراین، خطای تصادفی بعید است.
se âzmâyesh-e mostaqel natije-ye yeksâni dâshtand; banâbar-in, khatâ-ye tasâdofi ba'id ast.
Three independent tests produced the same result; therefore, random error is unlikely. (academic inference)
مدارک هنوز کامل نیستند؛ بنابراین، کمیته نمیتواند امروز رأی نهایی بدهد.
madârek hanuz kâmel nistand; banâbar-in, komite nemi-tavânad emruz ra'y-e nehâyi be-dahad.
The documents are not complete yet; therefore, the committee cannot issue a final decision today. (formal administrative conclusion)
The conclusion need not be logically certain. Modal wording calibrates its strength: بنابراین، احتمالا... “therefore, probably…” presents a supported but defeasible inference; بنابراین، باید... presents a recommendation or obligation.
تقاضا در دو ماه گذشته پیوسته افزایش یافته است؛ بنابراین، احتمالا به نیروی بیشتری نیاز خواهیم داشت.
taqâzâ dar do mâh-e gozashte peyvaste afzâyesh yâfte ast; banâbar-in, ehtemâlan be niru-ye bishtari niyâz khâhim dâsht.
Demand has risen steadily over the past two months; therefore, we will probably need more staff. (formal forecast with calibrated certainty)
The minimal contrast
The same situation can contain both a real-world consequence and a later inference about it:
سرمای شدید به لولهها آسیب زد؛ در نتیجه، آب چند ساختمان قطع شد.
sarmâ-ye shadid be lule-hâ âsib zad; dar natije, âb-e chand sâkhtemân qat' shod.
Severe cold damaged the pipes; as a result, several buildings lost water. (observed consequence)
آب چند ساختمان همزمان قطع شده است؛ بنابراین، مشکل احتمالا از شبکهی اصلی است.
âb-e chand sâkhtemân ham-zamân qat' shode ast; banâbar-in, moshkel ehtemâlan az shabake-ye asli ast.
Several buildings lost water at the same time; therefore, the problem is probably in the main network. (inference from evidence)
The first clause chain reports a cause and effect. The second begins with an observation and reasons toward a diagnosis.
Connector در نتیجه versus phrase در نتیجهی
Do not confuse detached در نتیجه، “as a result” with در نتیجهی + noun phrase “as a result of.” The ezâfe phrase directly takes its cause and is not followed by a comma before that noun phrase.
در نتیجهی اعتصاب رانندگان، توزیع کالا یک روز متوقف شد.
dar natije-ye e'tesâb-e rânandegân, towzi'-e kâlâ yek ruz motavaqqef shod.
As a result of the drivers’ strike, goods distribution stopped for one day. (formal cause phrase)
The phrase packages the cause as a noun phrase. A full reason clause and other causal constructions are covered in explaining reasons and results.
Spoken alternatives
In conversation, برای همین often sounds more natural for a personal causal explanation, while پس draws a quick inference or next step.
دیشب تا دیر وقت کار کردم؛ برای همین امروز کمی خستهام.
dishab tâ dir vaqt kâr kardam; barâ-ye hamin emruz kami khaste-am.
I worked until late last night, so I’m a little tired today. (neutral conversation)
— آسانسور خراب است. — پس از پلهها برویم.
— âsânsur kharâb ast. — pas az pelle-hâ be-ravim.
— The elevator is broken. — Then let’s take the stairs. (neutral conversation; practical inference)
Using بنابراین in the second exchange would be grammatical but comically formal for a simple shared decision.
Position, punctuation, and overuse
After an independent premise, formal writing normally uses a full stop or semicolon, then the marker and a Persian comma: ...؛ بنابراین، .... The comma after the marker represents a short boundary and is especially useful in dense prose. Writers sometimes omit it; omission does not change the grammar.
Do not begin every sentence in a paragraph with بنابراین or در نتیجه. A connector claims a new inferential step. If several sentences merely describe parts of one result, one marker at the start of the result passage is enough.
Common Mistakes
1. Using therefore to introduce the cause
⚠️ بنابراین، جاده بسته بود؛ از مسیر ساحلی رفتیم.
banâbar-in, jâdde baste bud; az masir-e sâheli raftim.
Grammatical only if some earlier premise licenses ‘therefore the road was closed’; it cannot make جاده بسته بود mean ‘because the road was closed’ for the following clause.
✅ جاده بسته بود؛ بنابراین، از مسیر ساحلی رفتیم.
jâdde baste bud; banâbar-in, az masir-e sâheli raftim.
The road was closed; therefore, we took the coastal route.
2. Breaking the ezâfe cause phrase
❌ در نتیجه، تعمیر پل رفتوآمد محدود شد.
Incorrect for ‘as a result of the bridge repair’ — the cause requires در نتیجهی plus an ezâfe complement.
✅ در نتیجهی تعمیر پل، رفتوآمد در این مسیر محدود شد.
dar natije-ye ta'mir-e pol, raft-o-âmad dar in masir mahdud shod.
As a result of the bridge repair, traffic on this route was restricted.
3. Claiming causation from mere sequence
⚠️ مدیر وارد شد؛ در نتیجه، باران شروع شد.
modir vâred shod; dar natije, bârân shoru' shod.
Grammatical form but an unsupported causal claim: the manager’s arrival did not cause the rain.
✅ مدیر وارد شد و همان لحظه باران شروع شد.
modir vâred shod va hamân lahze bârân shoru' shod.
The manager entered, and at that moment it began to rain. (simultaneous sequence without causal claim)
4. Doubling cause and conclusion mechanically
⚠️ چون هوا مهآلود بود، بنابراین، پرواز لغو شد.
chun havâ meh-âlud bud, banâbar-in, parvâz laghv shod.
Understandable but heavy for one short relation; both clauses are already tightly linked by چون.
✅ چون هوا مهآلود بود، پرواز لغو شد.
chun havâ meh-âlud bud, parvâz laghv shod.
Because the weather was foggy, the flight was canceled.
Key Takeaways
- در نتیجه favors an ensuing real-world consequence; بنابراین favors an inference, decision, or recommendation.
- Both point backward and introduce an independent result statement.
- در نتیجهی + noun phrase packages a cause and is structurally different from detached در نتیجه،.
- Use برای همین and پس for lighter conversational consequences.
- Do not use a result marker unless the evidence warrants the causal or inferential relation.
