در ضمن and به علاوه

Both در ضمن and به علاوه add information, but they package the addition differently. در ضمن often opens a related side topic—“by the way / besides”—while به علاوه adds another consideration pointing in the same argumentative direction—“moreover / in addition.” Neither is merely a longer replacement for و “and.”

The core distinction

MarkerWhat it addsTypical placementRegister
در ضمنa relevant side point, reminder, or new topicat the start of a turn or sentenceneutral; very common in conversation
در ضمنan additional practical considerationinitial or parentheticalneutral speech and writing
به علاوهanother reason, property, or item with the same orientationusually sentence-initial after prior evidenceformal-neutral; common in exposition
در همین فاصلهa simultaneous eventinitial time frameneutral

The predictive question is: Am I opening a side channel, or strengthening one line of argument? Choose در ضمن for the side channel and به علاوه for cumulative support.

💡
در ضمن changes what is currently relevant; به علاوه preserves the current question and adds another fact to the same side of the answer.

At the beginning of a turn, در ضمن signals that the speaker is adding something not required by the preceding sentence but relevant to the larger situation. It may introduce a reminder, forgotten detail, or small topic shift.

در ضمن، کتابی که به من قرض دادی هنوز پیش من است.

dar zemn, ketâbi ke be man qarz dâdi hanuz pish-e man ast.

By the way, the book you lent me is still with me. (neutral conversation; related reminder)

فردا جلسه ساعت نه شروع می‌شود. در ضمن، کارت ورودت را فراموش نکن.

fardâ jalase sâ'at-e noh shoru' mi-shavad. dar zemn, kârt-e vorud-at râ farâmush nakon.

Tomorrow the meeting starts at nine. Also, don’t forget your entry card. (neutral conversation; practical reminder)

The second sentence does not prove or explain the meeting time. در ضمن says only that the reminder belongs to the same practical exchange.

In spontaneous speech, راستی is a frequent (informal) alternative when a thought occurs to the speaker: “oh, by the way.” در ضمن is less abrupt and works more comfortably in email and careful conversation.

راستی، کلید دفتر دست تو مانده؟

râsti, kelid-e daftar dast-e to mânde?

Oh, by the way, did you end up keeping the office key? (informal conversation)

در ضمن، لطفا نشانی جدید دفتر را هم برایم بفرست.

dar zemn, lotfan neshâni-ye jadid-e daftar râ ham barâ-yam be-ferest.

Also, please send me the office’s new address. (neutral message)

Here هم marks the added requested item locally, while در ضمن marks the addition at discourse level. They can coexist because they have different scopes.

در ضمن is not always temporal “meanwhile”

English meanwhile can introduce an event happening at the same time. Discourse-marker در ضمن does not reliably assert simultaneity. For a real time relation, use در همین فاصله، هم‌زمان, or a temporal subordinate clause.

من با پشتیبانی تماس گرفتم. در همین فاصله، نرگس نسخه‌ی پشتیبان را پیدا کرد.

man bâ poshtibâni tamâs gereftam. dar hamin fâsele, Narges noskhe-ye poshtibân râ peydâ kard.

I contacted support. Meanwhile, Narges found the backup copy. (neutral narrative; genuine simultaneity)

The phrase ضمن کار or در ضمن کار can have a literal temporal sense “during the work,” but that is a prepositional phrase with a complement, not the detached discourse marker taught here.

به علاوه: another point in the same argument

به علاوه introduces cumulative evidence. If the first sentence supports buying, rejecting, approving, or doubting something, the second normally supports the same conclusion.

این لپ‌تاپ سبک و محکم است؛ به علاوه، باتری آن یک روز کامل دوام می‌آورد.

in lap-tâp sabok o mohkam ast; be elâve, bâtri-ye ân yek ruz-e kâmel davâm mi-âvarad.

This laptop is light and sturdy; moreover, its battery lasts a full day. (formal-neutral; cumulative support)

پیشنهاد از نظر مالی عملی است. به علاوه، تیم اجرایی تجربه‌ی کافی دارد.

pishnehâd az nazar-e mâli amali ast. be elâve, tim-e ejrâyi tajrobe-ye kâfi dârad.

The proposal is financially feasible. In addition, the implementation team has sufficient experience. (formal argument)

علاوه بر این and افزون بر این are fuller alternatives. علاوه بر این is neutral-formal; افزون بر این is distinctly formal or academic. They make the backward reference explicit through این.

هزینه‌ی نگهداری کاهش یافته است؛ افزون بر این، مصرف انرژی نیز کمتر شده است.

hazine-ye negahdâri kâhesh yâfte ast; afzun bar in, masraf-e enerzhi niz kam-tar shode ast.

Maintenance costs have fallen; furthermore, energy consumption has also decreased. (academic/formal)

Do not overuse به علاوه between every pair of sentences. Once the additive relation is clear, ordinary و, local هم/نیز, or no overt connector produces lighter prose.

For the clause-level syntax of و, see coordination with و، یا، اما، ولی. The present page concerns how whole discourse moves are packaged, not how coordinated phrases are formed.

Minimal contrast: side topic or supporting reason?

Imagine that two colleagues are discussing whether to rent an office.

دفتر نور خوبی دارد. در ضمن، صاحبخانه گفت کلیدها را فردا تحویل می‌دهد.

daftar nur-e khubi dârad. dar zemn, sâhebkhâne goft kelid-hâ râ fardâ tahvil mi-dahad.

The office has good light. By the way, the landlord said he will hand over the keys tomorrow. (neutral; added practical detail)

دفتر نور خوبی دارد. به علاوه، اجاره‌ی آن از بودجه‌ی ما کمتر است.

daftar nur-e khubi dârad. be elâve, ejâre-ye ân az budje-ye mâ kam-tar ast.

The office has good light. Moreover, its rent is below our budget. (formal-neutral; second argument in favor)

Both additions are relevant, but only the second is explicitly organized as another reason supporting the choice.

Placement and punctuation

At sentence onset, both markers are normally followed by a Persian comma in careful edited prose: در ضمن، ... and به علاوه، .... A full stop or semicolon before به علاوه helps show that it introduces a new independent contribution. In dialogue, the pause after در ضمن may be brief and writers sometimes omit the comma.

Parenthetical در ضمن can interrupt a clause, but frequent interruption makes prose hard to follow. به علاوه is less natural deep inside a clause because its preferred scope is the entire following proposition.

💡
Punctuation reflects scope: after a full stop, the marker organizes a new sentence; between commas, it comments parenthetically. It does not become a conjunction that licenses an otherwise incomplete clause.

A short exchange

— برای سفر قطار بهتر است یا اتوبوس؟ — قطار راحت‌تر است. به علاوه، شب حرکت می‌کند و یک روز را از دست نمی‌دهیم. در ضمن، ایستگاهش هم نزدیک خانه‌ی توست.

— barâ-ye safar qatâr behtar ast yâ otobus? — qatâr râhat-tar ast. be elâve, shab harekat mi-konad va yek ruz râ az dast nemi-dehim. dar zemn, istgâh-ash ham nazdik-e khâne-ye to-st.

— Is the train or bus better for the trip? — The train is more comfortable. Moreover, it leaves at night, so we don’t lose a day. By the way, its station is near your home too. (neutral discussion; argument followed by practical aside)

Common Mistakes

1. Using در ضمن for strict simultaneity

⚠️ جلسه شروع شد؛ در ضمن، من در راه بودم.

jalase shoru' shod; dar zemn, man dar râh budam.

Grammatical as an added aside, but it does not clearly mean that the two situations overlapped.

✅ وقتی جلسه شروع شد، من هنوز در راه بودم.

vaqti jalase shoru' shod, man hanuz dar râh budam.

When the meeting began, I was still on the way. (explicit temporal overlap)

2. Using به علاوه for an unrelated side remark

⚠️ بودجه تصویب شد. به علاوه، چترت پیش من مانده است.

budje tasvib shod. be elâve, chatr-at pish-e man mânde ast.

Grammatical sentences, but به علاوه falsely presents the umbrella as another point in the budget argument.

✅ بودجه تصویب شد. در ضمن، چترت پیش من مانده است.

budje tasvib shod. dar zemn, chatr-at pish-e man mânde ast.

The budget was approved. By the way, your umbrella is still with me.

3. Adding که directly after the detached marker

❌ در ضمن که فردا دفتر بسته است.

Incorrect as a complete discourse move — detached در ضمن does not take a finite که clause this way.

✅ در ضمن، فردا دفتر بسته است.

dar zemn, fardâ daftar baste ast.

By the way, the office is closed tomorrow.

4. Doubling the same additive signal

⚠️ و به علاوه نیز هزینه کمتر است.

va be elâve niz hazine kam-tar ast.

Grammatical but needlessly overloaded in an ordinary addition: و, به علاوه, and نیز all point in the same direction.

✅ به علاوه، هزینه‌ی اجرای طرح کمتر است.

be elâve, hazine-ye ejrâ-ye tarh kam-tar ast.

Moreover, the cost of implementing the plan is lower.

Key Takeaways

  • در ضمن adds a reminder, side topic, or secondary practical point.
  • به علاوه adds cumulative evidence supporting the same line of argument.
  • For strict “meanwhile,” use a temporal expression such as در همین فاصله.
  • Put these detached markers near the start of the sentence they organize and use a comma in careful prose.
  • Prefer راستی for spontaneous “oh, by the way” and افزون بر این for elevated academic addition.
