فرمودن is an other-raising verb: it can replace neutral گفتن “say” when the grammatical subject is a respected addressee or third person. Thus استاد فرمودند respectfully reports “the professor said.” The verb historically and literally also means “command, order,” but modern polite interaction often contains no command at all.
Its most frequent imperative, بفرمایید, has developed far beyond “say!” Depending on gesture and context, it means “please go ahead,” “come in,” “have some,” “take this,” “sit down,” or “yes, how may I help?” These meanings share one pragmatic core: the speaker yields the floor, space, object, or next action to the addressee.
Principal parts and social orientation
| Form | Persian | Romanization | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| infinitive | فرمودن | farmudan | to say/command honorifically |
| past stem | فرمودـ | farmud- | فرمودند |
| present stem | فرماـ | farmâ- | میفرمایید |
| past participle | فرموده | farmude | فرمودهاند |
| imperative | بفرما / بفرمایید | be-farmâ / be-farmâyid | please; go ahead |
| negative imperative | نفرما / نفرمایید | na-farmâ / na-farmâyid | please do not say/do |
The stem alternation فرمود / فرما must be memorized. Stem-final ا takes linking ی before personal endings: میفرمایم، میفرمایید. بفرما is familiar singular and can sound warm in hospitality; بفرمایید is plural or polite singular and is much more widely usable with unfamiliar or respected adults.
Full morphological paradigm
| Person | Present indicative | Simple past | Present perfect | Present subjunctive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | میفرمایم | فرمودم | فرمودهام | بفرمایم |
| you (sg.) | میفرمایی | فرمودی | فرمودهای | بفرمایی |
| he/she/it | میفرماید | فرمود | فرموده است | بفرماید |
| we | میفرماییم | فرمودیم | فرمودهایم | بفرماییم |
| you (pl./polite) | میفرمایید | فرمودید | فرمودهاید | بفرمایید |
| they/respectful singular | میفرمایند | فرمودند | فرمودهاند | بفرمایند |
All six forms are morphologically possible, but they do not have equal social value. For ordinary “say,” first-person فرمودم elevates the speaker and is usually inappropriate; first-person forms retain literal “command” in historical, institutional, or ironic contexts. Modern deferential use concentrates on polite second person and respected third person.
Negatives are نمیفرمایم، نفرمودم، نفرمودهام، نفرمایم. In respectful third-person reference, a singular person often receives plural agreement: ایشان فرمودند. Lexical honorification and plural agreement can reinforce each other, but either choice still depends on the relationship and setting.
استاد فرمودند نسخهی نهایی را تا دوشنبه بفرستیم.
ostâd farmudand noskhe-ye nehâyi râ tâ doshanbe be-ferestim.
The professor said that we should send the final version by Monday. (respectful/formal; singular subject with plural agreement)
شما فرمودید جلسه از ساعت نه شروع میشود.
shomâ farmudid jalse az sâ'at-e noh shoru' mi-shavad.
You said that the meeting starts at nine. (polite standard)
ایشان در پایان سخنرانی فرمودند که پاسخگویی ادامه خواهد داشت.
ishân dar pâyân-e sokhanrâni farmudand ke pâsokh-guyi edâme khâhad dâsht.
At the end of the lecture, they said that the question period would continue. (respectful/formal)
Honorific “say” and literal “command”
With a respected modern subject, فرمودن frequently means no more than deferential گفتن. The content may be a quotation, a که clause, or a directive. Context determines whether English needs “said,” “stated,” “instructed,” or genuinely “ordered.”
مدیر گروه فرمودند: «این بخش را دوباره بررسی کنید.»
modir-e goruh farmudand: ‘in bakhsh râ dubâre barrasi konid.’
The department head said, ‘Review this section again.’ (respectful formal report; directive content)
پادشاه فرمود تا دروازه را پیش از غروب ببندند.
pâdshâh farmud tâ darvâze râ pish az ghorub be-bandand.
The king commanded that the gate be closed before sunset. (literary/historical; literal command)
The second use survives in historical narration, religious prose, and stylized institutional language (literary/formal). It should not lead learners to translate every contemporary چه فرمودید؟ as “What did you command?”
For neutral reported speech, review گفتن: to Say.
بفرمایید as a pragmatic operator
Standalone بفرمایید cedes access or initiative to the addressee. The physical setting, gesture, and following phrase supply the action. At a doorway it is “come in”; while serving food it is “please have some”; on the telephone it is “yes, go ahead”; after a question it invites the other person to speak.
بفرمایید داخل؛ آقای دکتر منتظرتان هستند.
be-farmâyid dâkhel; âqâ-ye doktor montazer-etân hastand.
Please come in; the doctor is expecting you. (polite reception formula)
اگر نکتهای باقی مانده، بفرمایید.
agar nokte-i bâqi mânde, be-farmâyid.
If any point remains, please go ahead. (polite meeting formula; invitation to speak)
بفرمایید چای؛ تازه دم کردهام.
be-farmâyid chây; tâze dam karde-am.
Please have some tea; I have just brewed it. (polite hospitality)
بفرمایید بنشینید تا پرونده را بیاورم.
be-farmâyid be-neshinid tâ parvande râ biyâvaram.
Please have a seat while I bring the file. (polite service encounter)
In the last example, بفرمایید does not replace بنشینید morphologically. It frames and softens the following polite imperative. A learner who hears only “say” will miss one of the most frequent interactional words in Iranian Persian.
فرمودن as an honorific light verb
Formal deference can replace light کردن with فرمودن while keeping the nonverbal element: توجه فرمودن، ملاحظه فرمودن، عنایت فرمودن. In directives, توجه بفرمایید is a more deferential or bureaucratic counterpart of توجه کنید. A smaller set is strongly lexicalized, such as میل فرمودن “eat/have [food] honorifically.”
خواهش میکنم به تاریخ درجشده در نامه توجه بفرمایید.
khâhesh mi-konam be târikh-e darj-shode dar nâme tavajjoh be-farmâyid.
Please note the date stated in the letter. (highly formal/deferential)
اگر صلاح میدانید، این بند را هم ملاحظه بفرمایید.
agar salâh mi-dânid, in band râ ham molâheze be-farmâyid.
If you consider it appropriate, please examine this clause as well. (formal deferential request)
مهمانان پیش از حرکت کمی چای میل فرمودند.
mehmânân pish az harekat kami chây meyl farmudand.
The guests had some tea before leaving. (honorific/formal narration)
This substitution is productive only within social and lexical limits. *کار فرمودن is not automatically a respectful version of every کار کردن use, and excessive stacking can sound servile, comic, or like outdated official prose.
Direction of respect and agreement
Honorific vocabulary raises the subject whose action is described. Therefore شما فرمودید raises “you,” while humble عرض کردم lowers “I.” Reversing them can accidentally honor oneself and humble the addressee. Persian has no single politeness switch equivalent to adding English “please”; pronoun, agreement, verb choice, title, and intonation work together.
آنچه شما فرمودید با نتیجهی بررسی سازگار است.
ânche shomâ farmudid bâ natije-ye barrasi sâzgâr ast.
What you said is consistent with the review’s conclusion. (polite academic discussion)
همانطور که استاد فرمودهاند، این تعریف نیاز به اصلاح دارد.
hamân-tor ke ostâd farmude-and, in ta'rif niyâz be eslâh dârad.
As the professor has said, this definition needs revision. (respectful/academic perfect)
Using plural فرمودند for one respected person is common but not compulsory in every edited genre. A biography may use singular فرمود consistently; direct interaction often favors plural respect. Consistency with the surrounding pronoun system matters.
Tehran conversational forms and social risk
Polite conversation commonly reduces endings to فرمودین، میفرمایین، بفرمایین (informal, regional: Tehran) while preserving the honorific stem. These forms are warm and current in service encounters and hospitality. They are not needed among close friends, where heavy use may sound playful or ironic.
ببخشید، فرمودین اسمتون چی بود؟
be-bakhshid, farmudin esm-etun chi bud?
Sorry, what did you say your name was? (informal polite, regional: Tehran)
بفرمایین، اینم رسید خریدتون.
be-farmâyin, in-am resid-e kharid-etun.
Here you are—this is your receipt. (informal polite service encounter, regional: Tehran)
With a child, intimate friend, or oneself, فرمودن may be deliberately mock-respectful: بالاخره آقا تشریف آوردند! Such irony depends on voice and relationship. Learners should not imitate it until they can predict how the social stance will be heard.
Common Mistakes
1. Honorifying one’s own ordinary statement
In an ordinary polite exchange, من به شما فرمودم... would instead mean “I ordered you...” or sound mock-grandiose; it is not the self-lowering counterpart of “I told you.” Use:
✅ من به شما عرض کردم که کمی دیر میرسم.
man be shomâ arz kardam ke kami dir mi-resam.
I told you that I would arrive a little late. (self-lowering formal speech)
2. Building the present from فرمود
❌ استاد همیشه میفرمودد که باید دقیق باشیم.
Incorrect — a present form uses stem فرما with linking ی, not past stem فرمود plus another ending.
✅ استاد همیشه میفرمایند که باید دقیق باشیم.
ostâd hamishe mi-farmâyand ke bâyad daqiq bâshim.
The professor always says that we must be precise. (respectful/formal)
3. Adding a second polite ending
❌ بفرماییدید داخل.
Incorrect — بفرمایید already contains the polite/plural ending.
✅ بفرمایید داخل؛ جلسه هنوز شروع نشده است.
be-farmâyid dâkhel; jalse hanuz shoru' na-shode ast.
Please come in; the meeting has not started yet.
4. Marking the respected speaker as an object
❌ استاد را فرمودند که صبر کنیم.
Incorrect — the person who speaks is the subject of فرمودن, not a را-marked object.
✅ استاد فرمودند چند دقیقه صبر کنیم.
ostâd farmudand chand daqiqe sabr konim.
The professor said that we should wait a few minutes.
5. Inflecting both parts of an honorific compound
❌ این نکته را ملاحظه کنید بفرمایید.
Incorrect — honorific substitution selects one inflected light verb, not two consecutive imperatives.
✅ این نکته را هنگام بازبینی ملاحظه بفرمایید.
in nokte râ hengâm-e bâzbini molâheze be-farmâyid.
Please consider this point during the review. (formal/deferential)
Key Takeaways
- Memorize فرمودن — فرمود — فرما — فرموده; stem-final ا takes linking ی before endings.
- Honorific فرمودن raises a respected second- or third-person subject; it is not the ordinary first-person verb for “say.”
- بفرمایید yields the floor, space, food, an object, or an action and therefore has many context-dependent translations.
- فرمودن can replace کردن in selected deferential compounds, but the substitution is socially and lexically constrained.
- Plain گفتن remains neutral and is often preferable to heavy honorific language among equals.
