تشریف آوردن tashrif âvardan: to Come Honorifically

تشریف آوردن is the honorific counterpart of آمدن “come”: it presents the person who comes as respected. خانم دکتر تشریف آوردند means “the doctor arrived,” with both the honorific compound and plural agreement raising a single respected person.

The construction contains ordinary transitive آوردن “bring,” but the compound as a whole is intransitive. The respected visitor is its subject, not an object being brought. That mismatch between the literal parts and the syntax of the whole expression is the central fact learners must master.

Principal parts and the آوردن paradigm

FormPersianRomanizationUse
infinitiveتشریف آوردنtashrif âvardanto come honorifically
past baseتشریف آوردtashrif âvardتشریف آوردند
present baseتشریف آورtashrif âvarتشریف می‌آورید
past participleتشریف آوردهtashrif âvardeتشریف آورده‌اند
imperativeتشریف بیاور / تشریف بیاوریدtashrif biyâvar / tashrif biyâvaridplease come
negative imperativeتشریف نیاور / تشریف نیاوریدtashrif nayâvar / tashrif nayâvaridplease do not come

The light verb keeps the irregular principal parts of آوردن: past آوردـ, present آورـ. Its affirmative imperative and subjunctive contain بیاورـ, while negation replaces بـ with نـ: تشریف نیاورید. تشریف remains separate and does not inflect.

PersonPresent indicativeSimple pastPresent perfectPresent subjunctive
Iتشریف می‌آورمتشریف آوردمتشریف آورده‌امتشریف بیاورم

you (pl./polite)تشریف می‌آوریدتشریف آوردیدتشریف آورده‌ایدتشریف بیاورید
they/respectful singularتشریف می‌آورندتشریف آوردندتشریف آورده‌اندتشریف بیاورند

These forms are morphologically complete, but honorific distribution makes them unequal. First-person singular تشریف آوردم elevates oneself and is normally inappropriate in sincere deferential speech. It occurs jokingly, ironically, or when quoting someone else's overpolite wording (informal/ironic). Polite second-person and respected third-person forms are the productive core.

خانم دکتر حدود ساعت ده تشریف آوردند.

khânom-e doktor hodud-e sâ'at-e dah tashrif âvardand.

The doctor arrived at around ten. (respectful; singular subject with plural agreement)

شما معمولا چه ساعتی تشریف می‌آورید؟

shomâ ma'mulan che sâ'ati tashrif mi-âvarid?

What time do you usually come? (polite standard)

وقتی رسیدیم، مدیر پیش از ما تشریف آورده بودند.

vaqti residim, modir pish az mâ tashrif âvarde budand.

When we arrived, the manager had arrived before us. (respectful/formal narrative)

Invitations and anticipated arrival

The polite imperative تشریف بیاورید is a conventional invitation. It can stand after an explicit destination with به, after a time phrase, or without either when the destination is recoverable. اگر... and خوشحال می‌شویم... can soften it further, but the imperative itself is already polite because it has a respectful second-person form.

اگر فرصت داشتید، فردا عصر تشریف بیاورید.

agar forsat dâshtid, fardâ asr tashrif biyâvarid.

If you have time, please come tomorrow evening. (polite invitation)

خوشحال می‌شویم برای افتتاح نمایشگاه تشریف بیاورید.

khoshhâl mi-shavim barâ-ye eftetâh-e namâyeshgâh tashrif biyâvarid.

We would be delighted if you came to the exhibition opening. (formal invitation)

ممکن است بفرمایید چند نفر تشریف می‌آورند؟

momken ast be-farmâyid chand nafar tashrif mi-âvarand?

Could you please say how many people will be coming? (formal hospitality planning)

The last present form can refer to a scheduled or anticipated future event, just as ordinary می‌آیند can. Explicit future تشریف خواهند آورد is grammatical and remains honorific, but the scheduled present is more conversational; خواهند آورد without تشریف is simply the transitive future “will bring.” The neutral motion paradigm is reviewed under آمدن: to Come.

💡
Treat تشریف آوردن as one intransitive lexical unit meaning honorific “come.” Do not compute its syntax from the English gloss of آوردن “bring.”

Respectful subject, agreement, and destinations

The arriving person is the grammatical subject and does not take را. A destination takes به; a point of origin takes از. With a named respected person, third-person plural agreement is customary but sensitive to setting. Plain singular agreement is grammatical and may be entirely natural when less deference is intended.

رئیس دانشگاه از در اصلی تشریف آوردند و مستقیم به سالن رفتند.

ra'is-e dâneshgâh az dar-e asli tashrif âvardand va mostaqim be sâlon raftand.

The university president came through the main entrance and went straight to the hall. (respectful/formal)

آقای رضایی امروز به دفتر تشریف نمی‌آورند.

âqâ-ye Rezâyi emruz be daftar tashrif nemi-âvarand.

Mr. Rezaei will not be coming to the office today. (respectful workplace speech)

English honorific titles do not normally change the lexical verb “come.” Persian can encode respect simultaneously in title, pronoun, plural agreement, and verb choice. That stacking is possible but not mechanically required; using every device with a close colleague may sound distant or ceremonious.

تشریف داشتن and تشریف بردن

The noun تشریف participates in a small honorific motion-and-presence system:

Honorific predicatePlain counterpartCore meaning
تشریف آوردنآمدنcome/arrive
تشریف داشتنبودن / حضور داشتنbe present, be at a place
تشریف بردنرفتنgo/leave

آقای وکیل امروز در دفتر تشریف ندارند.

âqâ-ye vakil emruz dar daftar tashrif na-dârand.

The lawyer is not in the office today. (respectful workplace formula; تشریف داشتن)

ایشان پس از سخنرانی به جلسه‌ی دیگری تشریف بردند.

ishân pas az sokhanrâni be jalse-ye digari tashrif bordand.

After the lecture, they went to another meeting. (respectful/formal; تشریف بردن)

In ordinary modern speech, آقای دکتر امروز نیستند and ایشان رفتند remain respectful through plural agreement alone. The تشریف compounds add another layer of deference; they are common in reception, hosting, service encounters, ceremonial reporting, and invitations.

💡
Choose the light verb by viewpoint: آوردن toward the reference place, بردن away from it, and داشتن for presence at it. The honored person remains the subject throughout.

Plain alternatives and Tehran speech

Neutral آمدن is not rude. It is the normal choice with friends, relatives, children, and in descriptions where status is irrelevant. The honorific construction can create useful warmth in hosting, but it can also be ironic when addressed to an intimate who is very late.

مامانم امشب می‌آد، ولی آقای موسوی فردا تشریف میارن.

mâmân-am emshab mi-âd, vali âqâ-ye musavi fardâ tashrif mi-âran.

My mom is coming tonight, but Mr. Mousavi will come tomorrow. (informal, regional: Tehran; plain versus deferential reference)

Tehran speech regularly contracts می‌آورید to میارین and بیاورید to بیارین: چه ساعتی تشریف میارین؟، لطفا تشریف بیارین داخل (informal, regional: Tehran). Formal writing retains می‌آورید، بیاورید. The contracted form does not remove the honorific force of the compound.

لطفا تشریف بیارین داخل؛ بیرون خیلی سرده.

lotfan tashrif biyârin dâkhel; birun kheyli sarde.

Please come inside; it’s very cold out. (informal, regional: Tehran; polite hospitality)

Common Mistakes

1. Treating the respected visitor as the object of آوردن

❌ مهمان را تشریف آوردیم.

Incorrect for ‘the guest came’ — the honorific compound is intransitive and the visitor is its subject.

✅ مهمان ویژه ساعت هفت تشریف آوردند.

mehmân-e vizhe sâ'at-e haft tashrif âvardand.

The special guest arrived at seven. (respectful/formal)

2. Using the honorific compound to mean “bring someone”

❌ لطفا مترجم را تشریف بیاورید.

Incorrect — this asks the translator to come honorifically; it does not mean ‘bring the translator.’

✅ لطفا مترجم را هم با خودتان بیاورید.

lotfan motarjem râ ham bâ khod-etân biyâvarid.

Please bring the interpreter with you as well.

3. Mixing a first-person subject with respectful plural agreement

❌ من فردا ساعت نه تشریف می‌آیند.

Incorrect — first-person من cannot take third-person plural می‌آیند; respectful plural agreement honors a second- or third-person referent.

✅ من فردا ساعت نه می‌آیم.

man fardâ sâ'at-e noh mi-âyam.

I’ll come tomorrow at nine. (neutral standard)

4. Building the present from the past stem

❌ آقای موسوی تشریف می‌آوردندد.

Incorrect stem and ending — use the present stem آورـ plus ند.

✅ آقای موسوی هر پنجشنبه تشریف می‌آورند.

âqâ-ye Musavi har panjshanbe tashrif mi-âvarand.

Mr. Mousavi comes every Thursday. (respectful standard)

5. Joining تشریف to its light verb

❌ مدیر تشریف‌آوردند.

Incorrect standard spacing — تشریف and the inflected light verb are separate words.

✅ مدیر تازه تشریف آورده‌اند.

modir tâze tashrif âvarde-and.

The manager has just arrived. (respectful/formal)

Key Takeaways

  • تشریف آوردن is an intransitive honorific “come,” even though آوردن alone means transitive “bring.”
  • The productive social core is polite second person and respected third person; sincere first-person use normally self-honorifies.
  • Invite with تشریف بیاورید and negate with تشریف نیاورید.
  • Use تشریف داشتن for respectful presence and تشریف بردن for respectful going or departure.
  • Plain آمدن، بودن، رفتن are neutral, not impolite; choose the honorific compounds when the relationship and setting call for them.
