آمدن âmadan describes motion toward the speaker, addressee, or another active reference point: “come, arrive.” It has past stem آمد and a one-vowel present base conventionally cited as آی because ی appears before endings: میآیم. Its affirmative command بیا and negative نیا are highly irregular surface forms.
The verb also anchors many predicates whose meanings are not literal motion: پیش آمدن “happen/arise,” به دست آمدن “be obtained,” به وجود آمدن “come into existence,” and خوش آمدن “be pleasing.” English come offers little help with their arguments, so each combination needs its own lexical entry.
Principal parts
| Form | Persian | Reading | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| infinitive | آمدن | âmadan | dictionary form |
| past stem | آمد | âmad- | آمدم، میآمدم |
| present stem | آی | ây- | میآیم، بیاید |
| past participle | آمده | âmade | آمدهام |
| imperative | بیا؛ بیایید | biyâ; biyâyid | singular; plural/polite |
| negative imperative | نیا؛ نیایید | niyâ; niyâyid | not نبیایید |
Analyses differ in notation: some grammars call the present stem simply آ and treat ی as a hiatus-breaking glide; learner dictionaries often cite آی because it is visible throughout the paradigm. On either analysis, first singular is آیم inside میآیم. What must be memorized is that present forms do not use past stem آمد.
High-value paradigm
| Person | Present indicative | Simple past | Present perfect | Present subjunctive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | میآیم | آمدم | آمدهام | بیایم |
| you (sg.) | میآیی | آمدی | آمدهای | بیایی |
| he/she/it | میآید | آمد | آمده است | بیاید |
| we | میآییم | آمدیم | آمدهایم | بیاییم |
| you (pl./polite) | میآیید | آمدید | آمدهاید | بیایید |
| they | میآیند | آمدند | آمدهاند | بیایند |
Negation is نمیآیم، نیامدم، نیامدهام، نیایم. Notice that negative subjunctive and imperative use نیا-, without affirmative بـ: امیدوارم دیر نیاید “I hope he/she does not come late,” دیر نیا “do not come late.”
قطار ساعت شش از تبریز به تهران میآید.
qatâr sâ'at-e shesh az tabriz be tehrân mi-âyad.
The train comes from Tabriz to Tehran at six. (neutral standard; scheduled arrival)
دیشب چند نفر از دوستانم برای شام آمدند.
dishab chand nafar az dustân-am barâ-ye shâm âmadand.
Several of my friends came over for dinner last night. (neutral standard; completed arrival)
امیدوارم پیش از شروع جلسه بیایید.
omidvâram pish az shoru'-e jalase biyâyid.
I hope you come before the meeting starts. (polite standard; present subjunctive)
همهی مهمانها آمدهاند و شام آماده است.
hame-ye mehmân-hâ âmade-and-o shâm âmâde ast.
All the guests have arrived and dinner is ready. (neutral standard; perfect with present result)
Motion syntax and deictic choice
Like رفتن, literal آمدن is intransitive. A source takes از, a goal usually takes به, accompaniment takes با, and a purpose can be a برای phrase or تا + subjunctive. Standard order places these phrases before the verb.
پدرم از محل کار مستقیم به بیمارستان آمد.
pedar-am az mahall-e kâr mostaqim be bimârestân âmad.
My father came straight from work to the hospital. (neutral standard; source and goal)
آمدهام تا دربارهی برنامهی هفتهی بعد صحبت کنیم.
âmade-am tâ darbâre-ye barnâme-ye hafte-ye ba'd sohbat konim.
I have come so that we can discuss next week's schedule. (careful spoken standard; purpose clause)
English come and go can choose different vantage points. When arranging a visit to the listener, Persian میآیم پیش شما takes the listener’s location as the goal. When reporting departure from the speaker’s present location, میروم دفتر شما treats the motion as away. There is no permanent translation attached to a geographic place.
Commands and invitations
Singular بیا is both a literal command “come” and a conversational invitation to undertake something together: بیا صحبت کنیم “let’s talk.” Polite/plural بیایید can likewise introduce a proposal. The negative forms are نیا، نیایید.
بیا کنار پنجره بنشین؛ اینجا نور بهتر است.
biyâ kenâr-e panjare beneshin; injâ nur behtar ast.
Come sit by the window; the light is better here. (informal singular invitation)
خواهش میکنم فردا بدون هماهنگی نیایید.
khâhesh mi-konam fardâ bedun-e hamâhangi niyâyid.
Please do not come tomorrow without arranging it first. (polite standard; negative imperative)
Compound and lexicalized uses
Directionals form transparent motion predicates: بالا آمدن “come up,” پایین آمدن “come down,” درآمدن “come in/emerge.” Other combinations have conventional meanings and argument structures:
- پیش آمدن: happen, arise; the event or problem is subject.
- به وجود آمدن: come into existence; common in formal exposition.
- به دست آمدن: be obtained, result; often formal or academic.
- خوش آمدن از: like/find pleasing; the experiencer appears as a pronominal clitic.
در مرحلهی آخر یک مشکل تازه پیش آمده است.
dar marhale-ye âkhar yek moshkel-e tâze pish âmade ast.
A new problem has arisen at the final stage. (formal-neutral; پیش آمدن)
در هر دو آزمایش نتیجهی مشابهی به دست آمد.
dar har do âzmâyesh natije-ye moshâbehi be dast âmad.
A similar result was obtained in both experiments. (academic; به دست آمدن)
از طراحی سادهی این برنامه خیلی خوشم آمد.
az tarrâhi-ye sâde-ye in barnâme kheyli khosh-am âmad.
I really liked this program's simple design. (neutral standard; خوش آمدن with experiencer clitic)
The last sentence is not built as “I came pleasantly.” The stimulus takes از, while clitic ـم identifies the experiencer. This lexical frame must be memorized.
Tehran speech
Everyday Tehran has میام، میای، میاد، میایم، میاین، میان (informal: Tehran). The glide remains audible, but standard میآیـ contracts and formal endings reduce. Colloquial clauses also favor bare destinations and postverbal location: میام کافه. Standard prose uses به کافه میآیم.
— کی میای؟ — دارم میام سمت کافه؛ ده دقیقه دیگه میرسم.
— key miyây? — dâram miyâm samt-e kâfe; dah daqiqe dige mi-resam.
— When are you coming? — I'm heading toward the café; I'll arrive in ten minutes. (informal: Tehran)

Common Mistakes
1. Building the present from past stem آمد
❌ قطار هر روز ساعت شش میآمدد.
Incorrect — present ‘comes’ uses آی in میآید; میآمد is past imperfective.
✅ قطار هر روز درست ساعت شش میآید.
qatâr har ruz dorost sâ'at-e shesh mi-âyad.
The train comes at exactly six every day.
2. Constructing the command mechanically
❌ بآی اینجا بنشین.
Incorrect — the singular affirmative imperative is the irregular form بیا.
✅ بیا اینجا بنشین و کمی استراحت کن.
biyâ injâ beneshin-o kami esterâhat kon.
Come sit here and rest for a while.
3. Keeping affirmative بـ inside a negative command
❌ خواهش میکنم دیر نبیایید.
Incorrect in standard modern Persian — negative آمدن uses نیایید, not نبیایید.
✅ خواهش میکنم فردا دیر نیایید.
khâhesh mi-konam fardâ dir niyâyid.
Please do not arrive late tomorrow.
4. Giving خوش آمدن an English-like subject frame
❌ من این فیلم خوش آمدم.
Incorrect for ‘I liked this film’ — خوش آمدن uses از for the stimulus and an experiencer clitic.
✅ از پایان غیرمنتظرهی این فیلم خوشم آمد.
az pâyân-e gheyr-e montazere-ye in film khosh-am âmad.
I liked this film's unexpected ending.
5. Separating productive prefixes
❌ مهمان ها امشب ساعت هفت می آیند.
Incorrect standard orthography — both plural ـها and verbal می require ZWNJ.
✅ مهمانها امشب ساعت هفت میآیند.
mehmân-hâ emshab sâ'at-e haft mi-âyand.
The guests are coming at seven tonight.
Key Takeaways
