آوردن âvardan: to Bring

آوردن means “to bring”: an agent causes a person or thing to move toward the speaker, listener, destination, or scene treated as “here.” It is the transitive caused-motion counterpart of آمدن “come.” The same verb also builds common lexical expressions, from مثال آوردن “give an example” to به دست آوردن “obtain.”

The core contrast with بردن is viewpoint, not physical direction on a map. Someone at home says “bring the medicine home”; someone sending it from home to the office says “take the medicine to the office.” Persian makes the reference center especially visible through its choice of verb. The intransitive “come” system is detailed in آمدن âmadan: to Come.

Principal parts and irregular command

FormPersianRomanizationExample
infinitiveآوردنâvardanto bring
past stemآوردâvardآوردم “I brought”
present stemآورâvarمی‌آورم “I bring”
past participleآوردهâvardeآورده‌ام “I have brought”
imperativeبیاور / بیاوریدbiyâvar / biyâvaridbring; familiar / polite or plural
negative imperativeنیاور / نیاوریدnayâvar / nayâvariddo not bring

Present stem آور regularly appears after می‌: می‌آورم. The positive command, however, is established بیاور, not a mechanically assembled spelling such as بآور. Its negative is نیاور. These forms pattern with other vowel-initial imperatives and should be learned whole.

لطفا صورت‌حساب را هم بیاورید.

lotfan surat-hesâb râ ham biyâvarid.

Please bring the bill too. (polite standard)

برای مهمانی نوشابه نیاور؛ به اندازه‌ی کافی داریم.

barâ-ye mehmâni nushâbe nayâvar; be andâze-ye kâfi dârim.

Don't bring soda for the party; we have enough. (familiar singular; neutral standard)

Negatives are نمی‌آورم، نیاوردم، نیاورده‌ام، نیاورم. In the past and perfect, نیـ precedes the vowel-initial stem; in the negative present, نمی‌ is a single written prefix followed by ZWNJ.

Unvowelled third-singular می‌آورد can be present mi-âvarad “he/she brings” or past imperfective mi-âvard “he/she was bringing / used to bring.” The first contains present stem آور plus ـد; the second contains past stem آورد with no third-singular ending.

قرار است سارا نسخه‌ی اصلی را بیاورد.

qarâr ast sârâ noskhe-ye asli râ biyâvarad.

Sara is supposed to bring the original copy. (neutral standard; subjunctive complement)

چتر آورده‌ام چون هوا ابری است.

chatr âvarde-am chun havâ abri ast.

I've brought an umbrella because it is cloudy. (neutral spoken standard)

Caused motion toward a reference center

The entity moved is the direct object and takes را when specific. Its source appears with از; its goal may appear with به, پیش, or a spatial phrase. Because the verb already supplies the “toward here” perspective, the goal can remain unspoken when context identifies it.

پیک بسته را از انبار به دفتر ما آورد.

peyk baste râ az anbâr be daftar-e mâ âvard.

The courier brought the package from the warehouse to our office. (neutral standard)

وقتی آمدی، خواهرت را هم با خودت بیاور.

vaqti âmadi, khâhar-at râ ham bâ khod-at biyâvar.

When you come, bring your sister with you too. (familiar singular; neutral standard)

English sometimes chooses “bring” according to the speaker alone. Persian can instead adopt the addressee's or narrative scene's location as the center. A manager speaking from home may still say that an employee گزارش را به جلسه آورد “brought the report to the meeting,” because the meeting is the scene being narrated.

💡
Imagine a camera at the relevant destination. Motion into that camera's scene favors آوردن; motion out of it favors بردن. The camera can belong to the story, not only to the current speaker.

Evidence, examples, and reasons

Persian extends physical “bringing” to material introduced into a discussion. مثال آوردن is “give/cite an example”; دلیل آوردن is “give a reason”; شاهد آوردن is “adduce evidence or a witness.” These are neutral to formal depending on the noun, and are especially common in teaching, debate, legal argument, and academic prose.

استاد برای این قاعده سه مثال تازه آورد.

ostâd barâ-ye in qâ'ede se mesâl-e tâze âvard.

The professor gave three new examples for this rule. (academic/neutral)

وکیل برای ادعای خود شاهد معتبری آورد.

vakil barâ-ye edde'â-ye khod shâhed-e mo'tabari âvard.

The lawyer produced a credible witness for the claim. (formal/legal)

Here the evidence is still conceptualized as something brought into the shared field. That metaphor explains the extension better than memorizing unrelated translations.

او با کار پاره‌وقت پول سفر را به دست آورد.

این پنجره‌ها نور کافی برای کار فراهم می‌آورند.

in panjare-hâ nur-e kâfi barâ-ye kâr farâham mi-âvarand.

Most compounds keep the nonverbal element separate from آوردن. Prefixed lexical verbs such as درآوردن “take out; earn; remove clothing” are written according to their own established pattern and can have meanings no longer predictable from simple motion.

Tehran conversational forms

Everyday Tehran speech (informal, regional: Tehran) strongly contracts the present system: میارم، میاری، میاره، میاریم، میارین، میارن. Commands are بیار / بیارین and negative نیار / نیارین. Past آوردم often has a reduced conversational pronunciation, but standard spelling remains normal unless a text deliberately represents speech.

اگه میای، شارژرمم بیار.

age mi-ây, shârzher-am-am biyâr.

If you're coming, bring my charger too. (informal, regional: Tehran)

The second ـم in شارژرمم is additive هم reduced after the possessive clitic: “my charger too.” A careful version is اگر می‌آیی، شارژر مرا هم بیاور. Do not insert colloquial میارم into an otherwise formal report.

💡
Recognize بیار immediately in conversation, but produce بیاور in neutral writing. Both belong to the same verb and use present stem آور historically; they are register alternatives, not separate lemmas.

Common Mistakes

1. Building the command mechanically

❌ پرونده را بآور.

Incorrect — the standard imperative is the established form بیاور.

✅ پرونده‌ی آبی را تا ظهر بیاور.

parvande-ye âbi râ tâ zohr biyâvar.

Bring the blue file by noon.

2. Reversing the deictic direction

❌ من در دفتر منتظرم؛ گزارش را اینجا ببر.

Incorrect in the intended viewpoint — اینجا is the speaker's destination, so movement is toward the center.

✅ من در دفتر منتظرم؛ گزارش را اینجا بیاور.

man dar daftar montazer-am; gozâresh râ injâ biyâvar.

I'm waiting at the office; bring the report here.

3. Using the past stem after می‌ for a present event

❌ پیک هر صبح نامه‌ها را می‌آوردد.

Incorrect — the present stem is آور and third-singular ending is ـد.

✅ پیک هر صبح نامه‌های بخش را می‌آورد.

peyk har sobh nâme-hâ-ye bakhsh râ mi-âvarad.

The courier brings the department's mail every morning.

4. Treating an idiom as literal free composition

❌ او پول را به دستش آورد.

Incorrect for ‘she obtained the money’ — به دست آوردن is a fixed predicate, not possession plus a free clitic here.

✅ او سرمایه‌ی لازم را به دست آورد.

u sarmâye-ye lâzem râ be dast âvard.

She obtained the necessary capital.
