Persian politeness can change the predicate itself. A speaker may raise a respected person with فرمودن or a تشریف expression, and may lower their own speech with عرض کردن. These choices encode a social direction: honorific language points upward toward the respected subject, while humble language points downward from the speaker.
This is not ordinary agreement and not a mechanical “polite conjugation.” The respectful and neutral predicates remain separate lexical choices, and honorific replacement is limited to established combinations. It is common in service encounters, ceremonial speech, deferential institutional communication, and traditional politeness; sustained use among equals can sound distant, theatrical, or ironic. For the full verbal behavior of the central respectful verb, see فرمودن.
Three social perspectives
| Neutral meaning | Other-raising form | Self-lowering form | Typical setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| گفتن “say” | فرمودن | عرض کردن | respected person's words versus speaker's words upward |
| آمدن “come” | تشریف آوردن | — | arrival of a respected person |
| بودن “be/present” | تشریف داشتن | — | presence of a respected person |
| رفتن “go” | تشریف بردن | — | departure of a respected person |
| توجه کردن، ملاحظه کردن | توجه فرمودن، ملاحظه فرمودن | — | deferential request or report |
The dash matters: Persian does not require a special humble counterpart for every neutral verb. Nor can فرمودن replace کردن in any newly invented compound. The familiar honorific collocations must be learned as complete predicates.
فرمودن raises its subject or addressee
When فرمودن means “say,” the subject is the respected source of the words. In a request such as ملاحظه بفرمایید, the understood subject is the respected addressee. Second-person plural forms often reinforce respect toward one person, although plural agreement itself is not inherently honorific.
استاد فرمودند نسخهی اصلاحشده را تا فردا بفرستیم.
ostâd farmudand noskhe-ye eslâh-shode râ tâ fardâ be-ferestim.
The professor said that we should send the revised version by tomorrow. (respectful formal speech)
لطفا بند دوم قرارداد را هم ملاحظه بفرمایید.
lotfan band-e dovvom-e qarârdâd râ ham molâheze be-farmâyid.
Please also look over the second clause of the contract. (formal and deferential)
اگر فرصت داشتید، به توضیح زیر جدول توجه بفرمایید.
agar forsat dâshtid, be towzih-e zir-e jadval tavajjoh be-farmâyid.
If you have time, please note the explanation below the table. (formal and deferential)
In the last two examples, فرمودن occupies the verbal slot of an established honorific predicate. There is no additional کردن. The polite imperative بفرمایید also has broader conventional uses—“please come in,” “go ahead,” “here you are”—but those pragmatic uses do not license unrestricted substitution in other compounds.
تشریف expressions honor the person who comes, goes, or is present
تشریف آوردن, تشریف بردن, and تشریف داشتن treat تشریف plus its light verb as a single honorific predicate. The respected person is grammatical subject. In contemporary Iranian Persian these expressions are conventional (formal/respectful) choices in invitations, reception desks, institutional exchanges, and courteous hosting. In relaxed conversation among close friends, plain آمدن، رفتن، بودن is normally more natural.
خانم دکتر بعد از ساعت سه تشریف میآورند.
khânom-e doktor ba'd az sâ'at-e se tashrif mi-âvarand.
The doctor will come after three. (respectful)
مدیر امروز در دفتر تشریف ندارند.
modir emruz dar daftar tashrif na-dârand.
The director is not in the office today. (respectful institutional speech)
مهمان ویژه پیش از پایان برنامه تشریف بردند.
mehmân-e vizhe pish az pâyân-e barnâme tashrif bordand.
The special guest left before the program ended. (formal/respectful)
Plural agreement in تشریف میآورند can respectfully refer to one person, but the subject still behaves as subject: it does not take را. When speaking about several respected people, the same plural form is literally plural; context supplies the difference.
عرض کردن lowers the speaker's own contribution
عرض کردن is a humble predicate for presenting one's words, request, explanation, or service upward. It normally has the speaker or another socially self-lowering participant as subject. Its polite force comes from perspective, not from the literal meaning of عرض.
میخواستم خدمت شما عرض کنم که گزارش هنوز کامل نشده است.
mi-khâstam khedmat-e shomâ arz konam ke gozâresh hanuz kâmel na-shode ast.
I wanted to tell you that the report is not complete yet. (formal and deferential)
همان نکتهای را عرض کردم که در نامه نوشته بودم.
hamân nokte-i râ arz kardam ke dar nâme neveshte budam.
I stated the same point that I had written in the letter. (formal/humble)
The common framing خدمت شما عرض کردن is formulaic: خدمت شما marks the respectful direction of the speech, while عرض کردن is the predicate. In an ordinary exchange between close colleagues, گفتم is usually more natural.
Social asymmetry is contextual, not permanent
The same two people can change forms as the activity changes. A receptionist may say بفرمایید to a visitor; the visitor may reply میخواستم عرض کنم.... A professor can use neutral verbs when talking informally with a longstanding colleague, while a ceremonial introduction uses several honorifics. Repetition also matters: one tactful honorific can sound warm; a chain of them can sound ceremonious or sarcastic in the wrong setting.
— استاد امروز تشریف دارند؟ — بله؛ بفرمایید داخل، من هم خدمتشان عرض میکنم که تشریف آوردهاید.
— ostâd emruz tashrif dârand? — bale; be-farmâyid dâkhel, man ham khedmat-eshân arz mi-konam ke tashrif âvarde-id.
— Is the professor in today? — Yes; please come in, and I'll tell them that you have arrived. (respectful reception dialogue)
جلسه ساعت ده شروع میشود؛ اگر میآیی، مستقیم برو اتاق کنفرانس.
jalase sâ'at-e dah shoru' mi-shavad; agar mi-âyi, mostaqim be-rav otâq-e konferâns.
The meeting starts at ten; if you're coming, go straight to the conference room. (neutral exchange between peers)
The second sentence is not less grammatical or less considerate. It simply constructs an equal, familiar relationship rather than an explicitly deferential one.
Lexical restrictions on substitution
Established combinations include توجه فرمودن، ملاحظه فرمودن، عنایت فرمودن and میل فرمودن “partake/eat.” Their meanings and preferred settings must be learned whole. You cannot replace کردن with فرمودن throughout the lexicon. A respectful request may instead retain the ordinary predicate and express politeness through plural address, لطفا, a past modal, or an indirect question.
ممکن است این فرم را تا انتها تکمیل کنید؟
momken ast in form râ tâ entehâ takmil konid?
Could you complete this form through to the end? (polite neutral-formal; no honorific substitution needed)
Common Mistakes
1. Keeping کردن beside substituted فرمودن
❌ لطفا این نکته را توجه کنید بفرمایید.
Incorrect — the honorific predicate has one verbal head, توجه فرمودن.
✅ لطفا به این نکته توجه بفرمایید.
lotfan be in nokte tavajjoh be-farmâyid.
Please pay attention to this point. (formal/deferential)
2. Marking the honored subject as an object
❌ آقای رئیس را ساعت یازده تشریف آوردند.
Incorrect — the honored person is the subject of تشریف آوردن and does not take را.
✅ آقای رئیس ساعت یازده تشریف آوردند.
âqâ-ye ra'is sâ'at-e yâzdah tashrif âvardand.
The president arrived at eleven. (respectful)
3. Conjugating two verbs in one honorific compound
❌ استاد این بخش را ملاحظه کردند فرمودند.
Incorrect — ملاحظه فرمودن is one predicate; only فرمودن inflects.
✅ استاد این بخش را با دقت ملاحظه فرمودند.
ostâd in bakhsh râ bâ deqqat molâheze farmudand.
The professor examined this section carefully. (respectful/formal)
4. Mismatching first-person agreement in a humble predicate
❌ من موضوع را خدمت شما عرض کردند.
Incorrect — humble vocabulary does not cancel first-person agreement.
✅ من موضوع را دیروز خدمت شما عرض کردم.
man mowzu' râ diruz khedmat-e shomâ arz kardam.
I mentioned the matter to you yesterday. (formal/humble)
Key Takeaways
- فرمودن and تشریف predicates raise a respected subject or addressee; عرض کردن lowers the speaker's contribution.
- Honorific substitution is lexical and restricted, not a productive replacement of every light verb.
- Respectful plural agreement and honorific vocabulary often co-occur, but they are different mechanisms.
- Register depends on relationship and setting: appropriate deference in one exchange can sound distant or ironic in another.
