Journalistic Verb-Subject Inversion

When formal journalistic Persian places a subject after its predicate, the word-order change does not redesign the verb. The predicate remains finite, the subject still controls person and number agreement, and every aspect prefix, participle, auxiliary, and light-verb component keeps its normal internal position.

This page is deliberately about that stable verbal morphology. Why a report delays a new or heavy subject, how quotation framing works, and when inversion suits the genre are taught on Verb-Subject Inversion in Reports. Decide there whether inversion is licensed; return here to inflect it correctly.

The invariant: a complete finite predicate comes first

When inversion occurs, the subject follows the whole finite predicate, not merely a stem or nonverbal element. Different tenses place subject agreement on different parts of the chain.

present compoundنظارت می‌کنند کارشناسانمی‌ + present stem + 3PL ending on the light verb

passive perfectتأیید شده است نسخه‌ی نهاییpassive participles + finite auxiliary است

صبح امروز رسید پیام رسمی سفارت.

sobh-e emruz rasid payâm-e rasmi-ye sefârat.

The embassy's official message arrived this morning. (formal report; simple past, singular subject)

رسید is a third-person singular finite verb, not an infinitive. Its subject پیام رسمی سفارت happens to follow it. Persian past tense has no overt suffix in third-person singular, but zero marking is still a finite form.

💡
Find the agreement-bearing element before looking for the delayed subject: the light verb in a compound, the auxiliary in a perfect or future, and both finite members of a progressive.

Agreement with singular and human-plural subjects

A singular delayed subject selects singular agreement. A human plural selects plural agreement just as it does before the verb.

جزئیات طرح را توضیح داد مدیرکل برنامه‌ریزی.

joz'iyât-e tarh râ towzih dâd modir-koll-e barnâme-rizi.

The director-general of planning explained the details of the plan. (formal report; singular agreement)

در نشست عصر سخنرانی کردند استادان مهمان دو دانشگاه.

dar neshast-e asr sokhanrâni kardand ostâdân-e mehmân-e do dâneshgâh.

Guest professors from two universities spoke at the afternoon session. (formal report; human plural agreement)

Postverbal position does not trigger an Arabic-style singular agreement pattern. Persian استادان ... سخنرانی کردند remains plural as سخنرانی کردند استادان.... Nor does Persian introduce gender agreement: a delayed group of women and a delayed group of men take the same plural verbal ending.

Coordination also determines number before the reader reaches the subject:

به پرسش خبرنگاران پاسخ دادند وزیر و معاون او.

be porsesh-e khabarnegârân pâsokh dâdand vazir va mo'âven-e u.

The minister and his or her deputy answered the reporters' question. (formal; coordinated human subject, plural verb)

The plural ending ـند anticipates two coordinated singular participants. If the coordination were reinterpreted as a single institutional unit, singular agreement might occasionally arise, but that is a semantic construal—not a license supplied by inversion.

Nonhuman plurals: singular is not an inversion effect

Standard Persian often uses third-person singular agreement with a nonhuman plural understood collectively. Modern usage also permits plural agreement more readily when the entities are individuated, autonomous, or presented as acting separately. This variation exists in ordinary subject-first clauses too; placing the subject after the verb does not create it.

امروز منتشر شد نتایج نهایی آزمایش‌های میدانی.

emruz montasher shod natâyej-e nahâyi-ye âzmâyesh-hâ-ye meydâni.

The final results of the field tests were published today. (formal; collective inanimate plural with singular agreement)

یکی پس از دیگری وارد شدند سه کشتی امدادی.

yeki pas az digari vâred shodand se keshti-ye emdâdi.

Three relief ships entered one after another. (formal report; individuated nonhuman plural with plural agreement)

The phrase یکی پس از دیگری explicitly separates the ships into individual trajectories, making plural شدند natural. With a collective result set, singular شد is the conservative formal choice. For the full agreement system, see Inanimate Plurals and Singular Verb Agreement.

💡
Do not reduce agreement merely because the subject is postverbal. First decide whether it is singular, a human plural, or a nonhuman plural construed collectively versus individually.

Tense and aspect stay inside the predicate

In an imperfective compound verb, می‌ remains joined by ZWNJ to the inflected light verb. A delayed subject follows that entire complex.

بر روند توزیع دارو نظارت می‌کنند کارشناسان وزارت بهداشت.

bar ravand-e towzi'-e dâru nezârat mi-konand kârshenâsân-e vezârat-e behdâsht.

Health Ministry experts are monitoring the distribution of medicine. (formal report; present imperfective compound)

Negation occupies the same prefix position it has in neutral order:

در رأی‌گیری شرکت نمی‌کند نماینده‌ی استان مرکزی.

dar ra'y-giri sherkat nemi-konad namâyande-ye ostân-e markazi.

The representative of Markazi Province is not taking part in the vote. (formal report; negative present)

The subject cannot appear between می‌ or نمی‌ and کند, or between شرکت and the inflected light verb. Although compound predicates contain separate written words, inversion postpones the subject past the complete predicate.

Perfect, progressive, and future chains

In the present perfect, subject agreement is carried by the enclitic auxiliary after the participle. Human plural subjects therefore require plural ـاند.

از منطقه بازگشته‌اند امدادگران هلال احمر.

az mantaqe bâz-gashte-and emdâdgarân-e helâl-e ahmar.

Red Crescent relief workers have returned from the area. (formal report; human plural present perfect)

The subject follows بازگشته‌اند as a whole. It cannot be placed between participle بازگشته and auxiliary اند.

The داشتن progressive contains two finite verbs, both of which agree with the same subject. Unlike the compact perfect and future chains above, however, this colloquial-to-neutral progressive strongly favors keeping its subject before داشتن; postponing the subject beyond the whole chain is highly marked and is not a useful journalistic default.

نمایندگان دو طرف دارند درباره‌ی بودجه گفت‌وگو می‌کنند.

namâyandegân-e do taraf dârand darbâre-ye budje goft-o-gu mi-konand.

Representatives of both sides are discussing the budget. (neutral spoken; preferred subject-first progressive with plural agreement twice)

Both دارند and می‌کنند are third-person plural. If a writer deliberately uses the much more marked delayed-subject order, delaying the subject does not license a mixed form such as singular دارد plus plural می‌کنند.

In the synthetic future, the future auxiliary bears agreement and the following past stem remains bare:

در مرحله‌ی دوم همکاری خواهند کرد پژوهشگران چهار مرکز مستقل.

dar marhale-ye dovvom hamkâri khâhand kard pazhuheshgarân-e chahâr markaz-e mostaqel.

Researchers from four independent centers will collaborate in the second phase. (formal future; agreement on خواهند)

The order is همکاری + خواهند + کرد + subject. The delayed subject cannot split خواهند کرد, and کردند would wrongly duplicate plural marking on the bare lexical stem.

Active and passive predicates

In active inversion, a را-marked phrase remains the object and the unmarked delayed noun phrase remains subject. English may naturally translate the sentence with a passive, but Persian morphology is still active.

پیشنهاد تازه را مطرح کرده‌اند اعضای کمیته‌ی فنی.

pishnehâd-e tâze râ matrah karde-and a'zâ-ye komite-ye fanni.

The technical committee members have put forward the new proposal. (formal report; active perfect)

In a passive, the promoted patient is the subject and controls the finite auxiliary. The passive components stay together before that subject:

پس از بازبینی تأیید شده است نسخه‌ی نهایی قرارداد.

pas az bâzbini ta'yid shode ast noskhe-ye nahâyi-ye qarârdâd.

After review, the final version of the contract has been approved. (formal passive perfect; singular subject)

برای مرحله‌ی پایانی انتخاب شده‌اند داوطلبان سه استان.

barâ-ye marhale-ye pâyâni entekhâb shode-and dâvtalabân-e se ostân.

Applicants from three provinces have been selected for the final stage. (formal passive perfect; human plural subject)

The participle شده never takes person agreement; است / اند does. The subject must follow the full sequence انتخاب شده‌اند, not enter between its nonverbal element, passive participle, and auxiliary.

Common Mistakes

Replacing the finite predicate with an infinitive

❌ وارد شدن بازرسان سازمان استاندارد.

Incorrect as a report sentence — شدن is an infinitive and expresses neither tense nor subject agreement.

✅ وارد شدند بازرسان سازمان استاندارد.

✅ vâred shodand bâzresân-e sâzmân-e ostândârd.

Inspectors from the National Standards Organization entered. (formal report)

Using singular agreement with a human plural

❌ در جلسه سخنرانی کرد پژوهشگران مهمان.

Incorrect — a postverbal human plural still requires plural agreement.

✅ در جلسه سخنرانی کردند پژوهشگران مهمان.

✅ dar jalse sokhanrâni kardand pazhuheshgarân-e mehmân.

The guest researchers spoke at the meeting.

Marking a delayed subject with را

❌ به محل حادثه رسیدند گروه‌های امدادی را.

Incorrect — گروه‌های امدادی is the subject, not a direct object.

✅ به محل حادثه رسیدند گروه‌های امدادی.

✅ be mahall-e hâdese rasidand goruh-hâ-ye emdâdi.

Relief teams arrived at the scene.

Splitting the imperfective form around the subject

❌ بر این موضوع تأکید می سخنگو کند.

Incorrect — می‌ and کند form one imperfective finite verb, and the subject cannot enter between them.

✅ بر این موضوع تأکید می‌کند سخنگوی هیئت دولت.

✅ bar in mowzu' ta'kid mi-konad sokhangu-ye hey'at-e dowlat.

The cabinet spokesperson emphasizes this issue. (formal report style)

Splitting a passive auxiliary chain

❌ منتشر شده نتایج بررسی است.

Incorrect — the subject cannot interrupt the passive perfect شده است.

✅ منتشر شده است نتیجه‌ی بررسی مستقل.

✅ montasher shode ast natije-ye barrasi-ye mostaqel.

The result of the independent review has been published. (formal passive perfect)

Key Takeaways

  • Inversion delays the subject but leaves the Persian verbal system unchanged.
  • Human plural delayed subjects take plural agreement; singular agreement with a collective nonhuman plural is an independent Persian agreement pattern, not an inversion rule.
  • می‌/نمی‌, compound-verb parts, participle–auxiliary sequences, and future chains remain internally intact.
  • Perfect agreement appears on the perfect auxiliary, future agreement on خواهـ, and both verbs agree in a داشتن progressive.
  • A delayed subject never takes را, and an English passive translation does not make an active Persian predicate passive.
