Modern Persian preserves a compact optative form of بودن in باد “may it be” and negative مباد “may it not be.” These forms do not simply describe reality; they perform a wish, blessing, curse, or solemn warning: یادتان گرامی باد “may your memory be honored,” زنده باد آزادی “long live freedom,” مباد که امیدتان را از دست بدهید “may you not lose hope.”
The construction is fully recognizable today, but its productivity is limited. مبارک باد remains a conventional formal congratulation; زنده باد remains a living slogan; مبادا ... survives as an emphatic warning. Outside such environments, everyday speakers normally use امیدوارم ..., خدا کند ..., نکند ..., or an imperative such as مواظب باش ....
What باد is
باد is the third-singular optative remnant of بودن “to be,” not the noun باد “wind.” It follows a predicate and wishes that the predicate hold of the stated subject.
| Pattern | Function | Register | Modern alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| شاد باد | positive wish or blessing | formal/literary | امیدوارم شاد باشد |
| زنده باد ... | slogan or acclamation | public/formulaic | پاینده باشد |
| مبارک باد | congratulation or benediction | formal/formulaic | مبارک باشد |
| مباد ... | negative wish | literary/elevated | امیدوارم ... نباشد |
| مبادا + subjunctive | apprehensive warning | careful/literary; emphatic speech | نکند ... / مواظب باش ... |
تلاش شما پربار و آیندهتان روشن باد.
talâsh-e shomâ por-bâr va âyande-tân rowshan bâd.
May your efforts be fruitful and your future bright. (formal blessing)
یاد همهی جانباختگان این حادثه گرامی باد.
yâd-e hame-ye jân-bâkhtegân-e in hâdese gerâmi bâd.
May the memory of all those who lost their lives in this incident be honored. (formal memorial register)
The predicate comes before باد, just as a nominal or adjectival predicate comes before a copula: روشن است “is bright,” روشن باد “may it be bright.” English places may before the subject; Persian optative باد normally stands at the end of its predicate.
Fixed modern formulas and invariant باد
In living slogans and set expressions, باد is normally fixed even when the following or preceding notional subject is plural. زنده باد دانشجویان does not become ordinary modern زنده بادند دانشجویان. The formula has become more invariant than a regular agreeing verb.
زنده باد دانشجویانی که از حق آموزش دفاع میکنند.
zende bâd dâneshjuyâni ke az haqq-e âmuzesh defâ' mi-konand.
Long live the students who defend the right to education. (public slogan; باد remains fixed before a plural group)
خانهی تازهتان مبارک باد.
khâne-ye tâze-tân mobârak bâd.
Congratulations on your new home. (formal/formulaic congratulation)
هرچه بادا باد؛ این بار حقیقت را میگویم.
harche bâdâ bâd; in bâr haqiqat râ mi-guyam.
Come what may; this time I will tell the truth. (set proverb; literary-neutral)
بادا is an expanded, emphatic form found in poetry, rhetoric, and the fixed هرچه بادا باد. It does not create a new person or tense. Productively replacing every باد with بادا would make modern prose sound declamatory.
Classical Persian also attests agreeing optative forms such as بادند and a much broader verb class with optative ـاد. Those forms are (literary/archaic) and belong to historical grammar, not to productive contemporary conjugation. A modern slogan normally uses invariant باد; a modern personal wish normally switches to باشم، باشی، باشد، باشیم، باشید، باشند.
مباد as a negative wish
مباد contains the old optative negative مـ plus باد. It wishes that a state not hold or that an undesirable event never occur. In elevated prose and poetry, it can close a nominal predicate just like positive باد.
روزگار هیچ کودکی از جنگ و آوارگی تلخ مباد.
ruzgâr-e hich kudaki az jang va âvâregi talkh ma-bâd.
May no child's life be embittered by war and displacement. (literary/formal negative wish)
چراغ امید در دل شما خاموش مباد.
cherâgh-e omid dar del-e shomâ khâmush ma-bâd.
May the light of hope in your heart never go out. (literary blessing through negative optative)
Modern verbal negation normally uses نـ/نمی, but مباد is a fossilized optative form. Do not analyze it as imperfective می plus a stem or try to build نمیباد.
مبادا and apprehensive warnings
With final ـا, مبادا often functions as a warning particle followed by a finite subjunctive clause. It presents an unwanted possibility and urges the addressee to prevent it: “take care lest ...,” “don't you dare ...,” or “what if ...”.
مبادا نسخهی اصلی فایل را پاک کنی.
ma-bâdâ noskhe-ye asli-ye fâyl râ pâk koni.
Be careful not to delete the original file. (careful/emphatic warning; subjunctive کنی)
مبادا حرفی بزنی که بعدا پشیمان شوی.
ma-bâdâ harfi be-zani ke ba'dan pashimân shavi.
Don't say something that you will later regret. (elevated but still current warning)
مباد که اعتماد میان دو گروه از بین برود.
ma-bâd ke e'temâd-e miyân-e do goruh az beyn be-ravad.
May the trust between the two groups not be lost. (formal/literary; که plus subjunctive)
The following verb carries the participant and event structure: second-singular کنی, second-singular بزنی, third-singular برود. مبادا itself does not conjugate for that subject in contemporary usage. Negation is conceptually already supplied by مبادا, so the complement is normally positive subjunctive, not doubled with نـ.
The regular formation of those complement verbs is reviewed in Present Subjunctive Formation.
Blessing, warning, slogan, or curse
Pragmatics matters because optatives perform social acts. مبارک باد is ceremonial goodwill; یادش گرامی باد is memorial language; زنده باد ... publicly aligns the speaker with a person or cause. مرده باد ... uses positive باد after predicate مرده “dead” to perform a curse or hostile slogan (public/politically charged). The grammatical negative is not مرده مباد: that would mean “may [it] not be dead.”
Learners should recognize hostile formulas without using them casually. Optative solemnity can intensify praise and hostility alike.
Modern paraphrases
Everyday Persian usually makes the speaker and interpersonal tone more explicit.
امیدوارم در کار تازهتان موفق باشید.
omidvâram dar kâr-e tâze-tân movaffaq bâshid.
I hope you are successful in your new job. (neutral/polite modern wish)
مواظب باش رمز عبورت را برای کسی نفرستی.
movâzeb bâsh ramz-e obur-at râ barâ-ye kasi na-feresti.
Be careful not to send your password to anyone. (neutral conversation; modern warning)
Compare formal سفرتان بیخطر باد with neutral امیدوارم سفر بیخطری داشته باشید. The first sounds like an inscription, ceremonial send-off, or literary line; the second is ordinary polite speech. Neither is grammatically “better”—they enact different relationships and registers.
— برای پیام خداحافظی چه بنویسم؟ — بنویس: «سفرتان بیخطر باد.»
— barâ-ye peyâm-e khodâhâfezi che be-nevisam? — be-nevis: ‘safar-etân bi-khatar bâd.’
‘What should I write in the farewell message?’ ‘Write: “May your journey be safe.”’ (original dialogue; a formal optative chosen for a written send-off)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding imperfective می to the optative
❌ آیندهتان روشن میباد.
Incorrect — optative باد does not take the imperfective prefix می.
✅ راهتان هموار و آیندهتان روشن باد.
râh-etân hamvâr va âyande-tân rowshan bâd.
May your path be smooth and your future bright. (formal blessing)
2. Using an infinitive after مبادا
❌ مبادا رمزت را فراموش کردن.
Incorrect — the warned event needs a finite subjunctive agreeing with its subject.
✅ مبادا رمز تازهات را فراموش کنی.
ma-bâdâ ramz-e tâze-at râ farâmush koni.
Be careful not to forget your new password.
3. Building ordinary verbal negation on باد
❌ روزتان دشوار نمیباد.
Incorrect — the negative optative is مباد, not نمیباد.
✅ هیچ روزی برایتان بیامید مباد.
hich ruzi barâ-yetân bi-omid ma-bâd.
May no day be without hope for you. (literary)
4. Using an indicative after an apprehensive مبادا
❌ مبادا قطار را از دست میدهی.
Incorrect — the warning projects an unwanted possibility and requires subjunctive بدهی.
✅ مبادا با این تأخیر قطار را از دست بدهی.
ma-bâdâ bâ in ta'khir qatâr râ az dast be-dahi.
Be careful you don't miss the train because of this delay.
Key Takeaways
- باد is the surviving optative copula “may it be”; مباد is its negative “may it not be.”
- Modern زنده باد، مبارک باد، یادش گرامی باد are productive formulas, often with invariant باد even for a plural notional subject.
- بادا adds rhetorical emphasis; مبادا + subjunctive frames an unwanted possibility as a solemn or emphatic warning.
- Older agreeing optatives and generalized ـاد forms are literary or archaic, not a modern everyday conjugation system.
- Use امیدوارم، خدا کند، نکند, or مواظب باش for neutral contemporary wishes and warnings.
