Copula Ellipsis in Formal Prose

Formal Persian often leaves a present copula unpronounced when its form and scope are recoverable. This is ellipsis, not a claim that Persian generally lacks “to be”: a complete ordinary assertion still needs است، هستند or an enclitic copula, while a parallel series, headline, definition, caption, or document field can license a zero understood copula.

English also writes headline fragments such as “Road closed,” but it does not normally share one final is across several full subjects. Persian formal prose uses that second pattern freely. The practical question is therefore not merely “Can است disappear?” but “What construction supplies the missing predication, and can a reader recover its person, tense, polarity, and scope?”

A map of the licensed patterns

EnvironmentTypical shapeStatus
parallel predicatesX الف و ب استone final copula serves both predicates
parallel subjectsX الف و Y ب استone final third-singular copula closes a balanced series
headline or captionX نامشخصpresent copula recoverable from genre
label or fieldهدف: بررسی Xidentification, not a full running sentence
ordinary assertionX الف استcopula normally expressed

The strongest formal pattern is right-edge realization: several coordinated predicates or clauses are interpreted with one copula pronounced at the end. The omitted copies must be grammatically and semantically parallel.

روش نخست سریع و روش دوم دقیق است.

ravesh-e nokhost sari'-o ravesh-e dovvom daqiq ast.

The first method is fast, and the second method is precise. (formal written standard; one final copula has scope over both balanced clauses)

این سامانه کم‌هزینه، پایدار و قابل گسترش است.

in sâmâne kam-hazine, pâydâr-o qâbel-e gostaresh ast.

This system is inexpensive, stable, and scalable. (formal-neutral; one copula follows a predicate series)

The first sentence is possible because both understood predicates are third-singular and affirmative. The second is simpler: one subject has a coordinated predicate phrase, so repeating است would sound needlessly heavy. In neither case is the final است optional merely because the vocabulary is formal.

💡
Read a long coordinated sentence from the right edge. A final است/هستند/بود may close more than the nearest phrase—but accept that analysis only when the earlier members have matching subjects or clearly parallel predications.

Headlines, captions, and document fields

A headline is a compressed naming environment. نتیجه هنوز نامشخص is understood as “The result is still unclear,” although running prose normally has نامشخص است. Captions, slide headings, table cells, and form fields behave similarly. Their layout supplies part of the grammar.

نتیجه‌ی نهایی انتخابات هنوز نامشخص

natije-ye nahâyi-ye entekhâbât hanuz nâmoshakhkhas.

Final election result still unclear. (formal headline; present copula omitted)

وضعیت پرواز: لغوشده

vaz'iyat-e parvâz: laghv-shode.

Flight status: canceled. (interface or document label; identificational field)

در زمان انتشار این گزارش، نتیجه‌ی نهایی انتخابات هنوز نامشخص است.

dar zamân-e enteshâr-e in gozâresh, natije-ye nahâyi-ye entekhâbât hanuz nâmoshakhkhas ast.

At the time this report was published, the final election result was still unclear. (formal running prose; overt copula required for a complete sentence)

The minimal contrast is genre-sensitive. A headline is not simply an ordinary sentence with random words deleted. Once the same proposition is embedded in a paragraph—with a time phrase and explicit discourse relation—the overt copula anchors it as a full assertion.

Some newspaper headlines are event-noun phrases rather than copular clauses: افزایش قیمت مسکن means “rise in housing prices,” not automatically “housing prices are rising.” Do not mechanically restore است after every headline. Ask whether the final expression is a predicate such as نامشخص or merely part of a noun phrase.

Definitions and nominal density

Definitions often alternate between a label-like format and a full copular sentence. A colon can establish a relation that a paragraph would express with است.

هدف پژوهش: بررسی الگوی مصرف آب در شهرهای کوچک

hadaf-e pazhuhesh: barrasi-ye olgu-ye masraf-e âb dar shahr-hâ-ye kuchak.

Research objective: examination of water-consumption patterns in small cities. (academic label; no finite predication)

هدف این پژوهش، بررسی الگوی مصرف آب در شهرهای کوچک است.

hadaf-e in pazhuhesh, barrasi-ye olgu-ye masraf-e âb dar shahr-hâ-ye kuchak ast.

The objective of this study is to examine water-consumption patterns in small cities. (academic full sentence)

Formal Persian readily builds dense noun phrases from Persian and Arabic-derived vocabulary: ارزیابی امکان اجرای طرح “evaluation of the feasibility of implementing the plan.” That vocabulary can make a sentence resemble an Arabic nominal style, but the syntax is Persian: ezafe links the nouns, Persian word order organizes the predicate, and an ordinary full assertion still takes a Persian copula. Modern Persian does not inherit a productive Arabic rule that makes every present nominal sentence copula-free.

مبنای تصمیم، ارزیابی مستقل پیامدهای اقتصادی و اجتماعی طرح است.

mabnâ-ye tasmim, arzyâbi-ye mostaqell-e peyâmad-hâ-ye eqtesâdi-o ejtemâ'i-ye tarh ast.

The basis for the decision is an independent assessment of the plan's economic and social consequences. (formal/academic; overt final copula despite dense nominal style)

The comma after تصمیم can help readers locate the subject–predicate boundary, but punctuation does not replace the final verb. For strategies for unpacking these noun phrases, see Ezafe Chains in Academic and Bureaucratic Prose.

When recovery fails

Ellipsis becomes unsafe when coordinated members differ in person, number, tense, or polarity, or when a final copula could attach to more than one constituent. Formal editors often repeat the copula precisely where a shorter version would make readers backtrack.

من مسئول تدوین گزارش هستم و همکارانم مسئول گردآوری داده‌ها هستند.

man mas'ul-e tadvin-e gozâresh hastam-o hamkârân-am mas'ul-e gerdâvari-ye dâde-hâ hastand.

I am responsible for drafting the report, and my colleagues are responsible for collecting the data. (formal-neutral; different person and number require separate copulas)

مرحله‌ی نخست دشوار بود، اما مرحله‌ی دوم دشوار نیست.

marhale-ye nokhost doshvâr bud, ammâ marhale-ye dovvom doshvâr nist.

The first stage was difficult, but the second stage is not difficult. (formal-neutral; tense and polarity differ)

A final هستند cannot simultaneously represent first-singular هستم; final نیست cannot recover earlier affirmative past بود. English speakers may see coordination and expect one shared be, but Persian ellipsis respects the actual inflected form.

💡
Use ellipsis to remove repetition, not information. If person, tense, polarity, or the subject–predicate boundary would have to be guessed, repeat the copula.

A formal text and its conversational counterpart

جمع‌بندی دبیر جلسه چنین بود: پیشنهاد نخست پرهزینه، پیشنهاد دوم زمان‌بر و پیشنهاد سوم فاقد پشتوانه‌ی حقوقی است.

jam'-bandi-ye dabir-e jalase chonin bud: pishnehâd-e nokhost por-hazine, pishnehâd-e dovvom zamân-bar-o pishnehâd-e sevvom fâqed-e poshtivâne-ye hoquqi ast.

The meeting secretary's conclusion was as follows: the first proposal is costly, the second time-consuming, and the third lacks legal support. (formal minutes; final است closes a balanced list)

In conversation, a speaker would more often break the list into shorter clauses and use enclitic copulas: اولی گرونه، دومی وقت‌گیره، سومی هم پشتوانه‌ی حقوقی نداره (informal, regional: Tehran). That is not the same grammatical operation. Formal right-edge ellipsis shares one standard copula; casual speech uses reduced copulas or an ordinary lexical verb in separate intonational units. The broader colloquial pattern is treated on Auxiliary and Copula Omission.

Common Mistakes

1. Deleting the copula in ordinary running prose

❌ این نتیجه برای تفسیر داده‌ها مهم.

Incorrect as an unmarked full sentence in running prose — headline-style compression has been used without a headline or label frame.

✅ این نتیجه برای تفسیر داده‌های فصل بعد مهم است.

in natije barâ-ye tafsir-e dâde-hâ-ye fasl-e ba'd mohem ast.

This result is important for interpreting the data in the next chapter.

2. Sharing a copula across incompatible persons

❌ من آماده و همکارانم آماده هستند.

Incorrect for the intended parallel reading — هستند agrees with the colleagues, not with first-singular من.

✅ من آماده هستم و همکارانم هم آماده هستند.

man âmâde hastam-o hamkârân-am ham âmâde hastand.

I am ready, and my colleagues are ready too.

3. Treating a headline noun phrase as a zero-copula sentence

❌ افزایش هزینه‌های درمان است.

Incorrect as a restoration of the headline افزایش هزینه‌های درمان — that string is an event noun phrase, not necessarily a copular clause.

✅ گزارش تازه از افزایش هزینه‌های درمان خبر می‌دهد.

gozâresh-e tâze az afzâyesh-e hazine-hâ-ye darmân khabar mi-dahad.

The new report indicates a rise in treatment costs.

4. Assuming formal vocabulary licenses Arabic-style zero copulas

❌ مبنای تحلیل، ارزیابی جامع پیامدها.

Incorrect as a complete ordinary assertion — Arabic-derived nouns do not cancel Persian copular syntax.

✅ مبنای تحلیل، ارزیابی جامع پیامدهای احتمالی سیاست است.

mabnâ-ye tahlil, arzyâbi-ye jâme'-e peyâmad-hâ-ye ehtemâli-ye siyâsat ast.

The basis of the analysis is a comprehensive assessment of the policy's possible consequences.

Key Takeaways

  • Formal Persian can realize one copula at the right edge of a genuinely parallel series.
  • Headlines, captions, definitions, and fields license special compression; ordinary paragraph sentences do not automatically inherit it.
  • Dense Arabic-derived vocabulary remains inside Persian syntax and does not create a productive Arabic zero-copula rule.
  • Repeat the copula whenever person, number, tense, polarity, or scope differs.
