Inanimate Plurals and Singular Verb Agreement

Persian number agreement is partly grammatical and partly a choice of viewpoint. A plural subject referring to people normally takes a plural verb, but an inanimate plural very often takes the third-person singular—especially in formal writing, with states and existentials, or when the things form one set. Thus نامه‌ها رسید nâme-hâ rasid literally has a plural subject and a singular verb, yet naturally means “the letters arrived.”

English speakers tend to treat that mismatch as an error because English requires the letters arrived, not the letters arrives. Persian does not. At the same time, modern Iranian Persian also permits plural agreement with many inanimate subjects. The useful principle is not “nonhuman always equals singular,” but this: singular agreement backgrounds the individual members; plural agreement makes them more individually prominent or event-active.

The core agreement map

The noun itself remains fully plural. The suffix ـها does not disappear merely because the verb is singular, and a noun after a cardinal number remains morphologically singular for an independent reason. Review that separate rule on Plural after Numbers and Quantifiers.

Singular agreement: the unmarked formal pattern

Singular agreement is especially natural with بودن “to be,” شدن “to become,” existentials, and predicates describing location, condition, availability, or a result. The speaker presents the plural collection as one situation rather than narrating what each member did.

نامه‌ها دیروز رسید.

nâme-hâ diruz rasid.

The letters arrived yesterday. (formal written style; singular agreement)

پنجره‌ها تمام شب باز بود.

panjare-hâ tamâm-e shab bâz bud.

The windows were open all night. (written standard; one state holds of the set)

چند صندلی خالی در سالن هست.

chand sandali-ye khâli dar sâlon hast.

There are several empty chairs in the hall. (careful spoken standard; existential singular)

نتیجه‌های آزمایش هنوز آماده نشده است.

natije-hâ-ye âzmâyesh hanuz âmâde nashode ast.

The test results are not ready yet. (formal written style)

The third-person singular is not secretly agreeing with an omitted noun such as “set.” It is a genuine Persian agreement option licensed by an inanimate plural subject. That matters because learners sometimes try to repair the sentence by deleting ـها, which changes the noun phrase rather than solving anything.

The pattern is not confined to one tense or to affirmative clauses. A writer may use singular است in the present, بود in the past, نشد in a negative result, or خواهد شد in a formal future while keeping the same inanimate plural subject. Negation does not turn collective agreement off. What matters is how the subject participates in the described state or event. Stative and resultative predicates readily present several things as one condition; an action that tracks each object separately more readily invites plural agreement.

This helps with editing. Do not decide from the suffix on the subject alone. Read the predicate and the surrounding paragraph: a warehouse inventory, a bundle of test results, and a set of repairs naturally invite the collective singular, whereas three vehicles taking different routes invite the plural. The grammar gives the writer a viewpoint choice, and genre makes one choice more expected.

💡
Use singular agreement as the safest productive choice for an inanimate plural in formal writing, particularly with است، بود، شد، وجود دارد and passive or result-state predicates. Then learn plural agreement as a meaningful modern alternative, not as a correction of the singular.

When plural agreement becomes natural

Plural agreement is favored when the discourse points to distinct objects, contrasts one group with another, or imagines the members as independently undergoing an event. Demonstratives such as این and آن, enumeration, motion, and an agent-like predicate can all increase individuation. These are tendencies, not switches that mechanically force a plural ending.

این دوچرخه‌ها کنار ورودی هستند.

in docharkhe-hâ kenâr-e vorudi hastand.

These bicycles are beside the entrance. (careful spoken standard; a visible set of individual bicycles)

دو قطار هم‌زمان به ایستگاه رسیدند.

do qatâr ham-zamân be istgâh residand.

Two trains reached the station at the same time. (modern standard; independently moving referents)

برگ‌ها در باد می‌رقصیدند.

barg-hâ dar bâd mi-raqsidand.

The leaves were dancing in the wind. (literary personification; plural agreement supports the image)

In the last sentence, رقصیدن gives the leaves a human-like action. Plural agreement reinforces that personification. This is a semantic effect, not a claim that leaves have changed grammatical gender or entered a permanent “animate noun class.” Persian nouns have no gender, and the agreement choice can change with the same noun in a different scene.

A minimal contrast: both sentences can be right

The following pair is deliberately not marked with ❌. Both versions are grammatical; their most natural settings differ.

گزارش‌ها آماده است.

gozâresh-hâ âmâde ast.

The reports are ready. (formal or administrative; the batch is treated as one completed task)

گزارش‌ها آماده هستند.

gozâresh-hâ âmâde hastand.

The reports are ready. (modern neutral; the separate reports are salient)

The English translation hides the contrast because English has only plural agreement here. Persian singular agreement packages the reports collectively; plural agreement profiles the members. Context can outweigh register: even a formal writer may use plural agreement when contrasting several distinct reports, while a speaker may use singular agreement for a pile of documents viewed as one batch.

Numeral phrases do not change the logic

After a number, the Persian noun stays singular in form: سه نامه, not سه نامه‌ها. The phrase is nevertheless plural in meaning and can control the same singular-versus-plural choice as an overt ـها plural. Compare formal سه نامه رسید with modern, individuated سه نامه رسیدند. The agreement ending never licenses an extra plural suffix on the counted noun.

سه بسته برای دفتر رسید.

se baste barâ-ye daftar rasid.

Three packages arrived for the office. (formal written style; singular agreement)

سه هواپیما یکی پس از دیگری فرود آمدند.

se havâpeymâ yeki pas az digari forud âmadand.

Three airplanes landed one after another. (modern standard; each event is tracked separately)

Human numeral phrases behave differently. سه مهمان رسیدند normally requires plural agreement because the referents are people, although the noun مهمان is visibly singular after سه.

Formal editing and conversational Tehran Persian

Formal institutional prose strongly favors singular agreement for inanimate groups construed collectively. Everyday Tehran speech is more variable and frequently uses a plural copula with concrete, visible objects. Colloquial pronunciation can reduce both the plural suffix and the copula, so فایل‌ها آماده هستند؟ may surface as فایلا آماده‌ن؟. That is an explicit colloquial form, not standard spelling for a formal report.

پرونده‌ها کجاست؟

parvande-hâ kojâst?

Where are the files? (careful spoken standard; singular agreement treats them as one set)

روی میز هستند؛ جداگانه مرتبشان کردم.

ru-ye miz hastand; jodâgâne morattab-eshân kardam.

They are on the desk; I sorted them separately. (careful spoken standard; the answer foregrounds individual files)

فایلا آماده‌ن؟

fâylâ âmâde-n?

Are the files ready? (informal, regional: Tehran)

This short exchange shows why a rigid table cannot predict every token. One speaker can shift from a collective question to an individuated answer without changing what the files are.

Pronouns can reveal the same shift. A writer may first introduce پرونده‌ها with singular agreement as one administrative batch and later refer to their contents separately. That does not retroactively make the first verb wrong. Agreement is evaluated clause by clause, while discourse can move between a group-level and member-level view.

Common Mistakes

1. Extending singular agreement to a plural human subject

❌ دو دانشجو وارد شد.

Incorrect in ordinary modern Persian — the plural human subject requires plural agreement.

✅ دو دانشجو وارد شدند.

do dâneshju vâred shodand.

Two students came in.

2. Adding a plural suffix after a number

❌ سه پنجره‌ها شکست.

Incorrect — the numeral already supplies the plural quantity; پنجره stays singular in form.

✅ سه پنجره شکست.

se panjare shekast.

Three windows broke. (formal singular agreement with an inanimate phrase)

3. Making the predicate adjective plural

❌ درها بسته‌ها بود.

Incorrect — Persian predicate adjectives do not copy number from the subject.

✅ درها بسته بود.

dar-hâ baste bud.

The doors were closed. (formal written style)

4. Using a singular verb with coordinated people

❌ سارا و نیما رسید.

Incorrect in neutral modern Persian — two coordinated people form a plural subject.

✅ سارا و نیما رسیدند.

sârâ va nimâ residand.

Sara and Nima arrived.

Key Takeaways

  • Inanimate plural subjects commonly take a third-person singular verb in formal Persian, especially in states, existentials, and collective readings.
  • Plural agreement is also grammatical and widespread when inanimate members are distinct, active, contrasted, or personified.
  • Human plural subjects normally take plural agreement; animacy is therefore a major boundary, not a gender distinction.
  • A noun after a number stays singular in form regardless of which agreement option the whole phrase controls.
  • Do not “correct” every گزارش‌ها آماده است to a plural verb. First ask what register and viewpoint the writer intends.
