Persian honorific taʿârof register changes the social geometry of a clause. The addressee or respected third person may be raised with بفرمایید، تشریف آوردن، فرمودن; the speaker may lower their own action with عرض کردن، خدمت رسیدن and expressions built with خدمت. These are not merely longer synonyms for “go,” “come,” or “say.” Each predicate assigns respect in a particular direction.
This page focuses on recognizing and selecting that register. The broader interactional question—whether an offer is ritual, renewable, or final—is treated on Taʿârof as a Pragmatic System. Here the task is linguistic: identify whose action is honored, whose is humbled, and how much of the system a learner should actively produce.
A map of social direction
| Form | Whose action? | Neutral counterpart | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| بفرمایید | honored addressee | بگویید، بیایید، بروید، بگیرید | inviting speech or action; context supplies the verb |
| تشریف آوردن | honored visitor | آمدن | respectful arrival or attendance |
| فرمودن | honored speaker | گفتن | reporting respected speech |
| عرض کردن | speaker self-lowered | گفتن | speaking deferentially upward |
| خدمت رسیدن | speaker self-lowered | آمدن | approaching or visiting a respected person |
| در خدمت بودن | speaker/service role | آماده بودن، کمک کردن | availability to assist |
The central asymmetry is easy to test. If a professor speaks, a student can say استاد فرمودند. If the student speaks to the professor, the student says عرض کردم. Swapping these predicates can make the student honor themself and lower the professor—the reverse of the intended stance.
استاد فرمودند مقاله را تا پایان هفته بفرستیم.
ostâd farmudand maqâle râ tâ pâyân-e hafte beferestim.
The professor said that we should send the article by the end of the week. (respectful careful speech; professor is raised)
به استاد عرض کردم که نسخهی تازه آماده است.
be ostâd arz kardam ke noskhe-ye tâze âmâde ast.
I told the professor that the new version was ready. (deferential; speaker is lowered)
بفرمایید is a context-filled invitation
بفرمایید is the polite second-plural imperative of فرمودن, but in interaction it can invite many actions without naming them. At a doorway it means “please go ahead/come in”; beside a chair, “please sit”; while offering food, “please have some”; after a question, “please speak.” Gesture, objects, and the preceding turn identify the intended action.
بفرمایید داخل؛ بیرون خیلی سرد است.
be-farmâyid dâkhel; birun kheyli sard ast.
Please come in; it is very cold outside. (polite hospitality)
این صندلی خالی است، بفرمایید.
in sandali khâli ast, be-farmâyid.
This seat is free—please, have a seat. (polite invitation inferred from context)
بفرمایید، سؤالتان را میشنوم.
be-farmâyid, so'âl-etân râ mi-shenavam.
Go ahead; I'm listening to your question. (polite floor-giving)
Everyday Tehran often has بفرمایین (informal respectful, regional: Tehran). It retains the honorific function while taking the conversational second-plural ending.
بفرمایین تو، چای هم دم کشیده.
be-farmâyin tu, chây ham dam keshide.
Come on in; the tea's ready too. (informal respectful Tehran hospitality)
تشریف raises movement by the respected person
تشریف آوردن “to come honorifically” and تشریف داشتن “to be present/stay honorifically” profile a respected guest, customer, teacher, or official. تشریف بردن “to leave/go honorifically” also occurs. They are appropriate only when the grammatical subject is the person being raised.
خانم دکتر ساعت ده تشریف میآورند.
khânom doktor sâ'at-e dah tashrif mi-âvarand.
The doctor will arrive at ten. (formal respectful; honored subject with plural agreement)
فردا تشریف میارین دفتر؟
fardâ tashrif miyârin daftar?
Will you be coming to the office tomorrow? (polite informal Tehran speech)
Honorific vocabulary can coexist with conversational morphology. تشریف میارین is a coherent spoken politeness form; it is not defective because it differs from formal تشریف میآورید. In an official invitation, however, use the standard form.
خواهشمندیم روز دوشنبه در دفتر مرکزی تشریف داشته باشید.
khâheshmand-im ruz-e doshanbe dar daftar-e markazi tashrif dâshte bâshid.
We kindly request your presence at the head office on Monday. (formal written invitation)
عرض and خدمت lower the speaker
عرض کردن is the speaker's deferential “say/tell.” It commonly appears in عرض کردم، عرض میکنم، به عرض شما میرسانم. خدمت literally means “service” and frames the speaker as approaching or being available to the respected person: خدمت شما رسیدم, در خدمت شما هستم, خدمتتان عرض کنم.
میخواستم خدمتتان عرض کنم که جلسه جابهجا شده است.
mi-khâstam khedmat-etân arz konam ke jalase jâbe-jâ shode ast.
I wanted to let you know that the meeting has been rescheduled. (deferential careful speech)
اگر کاری بود، در خدمت شما هستم.
agar kâri bud, dar khedmat-e shomâ hastam.
If you need anything, I am at your service. (polite availability formula)
عرضم این بود که شاید بهتر باشد یک روز صبر کنیم.
arz-am in bud ke shâyad behtar bâshad yek ruz sabr konim.
What I meant to suggest was that perhaps we should wait a day. (formal/deferential self-reference)
These expressions can soften the speaker's claim, but they do not erase the content. A manager saying عرض میکنم may still disagree firmly. Social lowering and epistemic uncertainty are separate dimensions.
Recognition first, selective production second
At B2, learn to recognize the whole set but produce a smaller safe core: polite شما with plural agreement, لطفا in unpointed target spelling, ممنونم, بفرمایید, and neutral respectful verbs. Add تشریف and عرض when roles are clear. Highly ceremonial stacking can sound ingratiating, ironic, or bureaucratic if the relationship does not support it.
ممنونم؛ لطفا بفرمایید چه کمکی از من برمیآید.
mamnun-am; lotfan be-farmâyid che komaki az man bar-mi-âyad.
Thank you; please tell me how I can help. (safe polite service interaction)
بنده فردا نتیجه را خدمتتان عرض میکنم.
bande fardâ natije râ khedmat-etân arz mi-konam.
I will inform you of the result tomorrow. (formal self-lowering)
For a close colleague, plain فردا نتیجه را به شما میگویم may be warmer and more proportionate. Politeness is not measured by the number of honorific words.
A short reception dialogue
— خوش آمدید، بفرمایید داخل. — ممنونم؛ برای دیدن آقای مرادی خدمت رسیدم. — ایشان تا چند دقیقهی دیگر تشریف میآورند.
— khosh âmadid, be-farmâyid dâkhel. — mamnun-am; barâ-ye didan-e âqâ-ye Morâdi khedmat residam. — ishân tâ chand daqiqe-ye digar tashrif mi-âvarand.
— Welcome, please come in. — Thank you; I came to see Mr. Moradi. — He will be here in a few minutes. (formal-polite reception exchange)
Each predicate points correctly: the receptionist honors the visitor with بفرمایید, the visitor lowers their own arrival with خدمت رسیدم, and the receptionist raises Mr. Moradi with تشریف میآورند.
Common Mistakes
1. Using فرمودن for the speaker's own deferential speech
⚠️ من به استاد فرمودم که نسخه آماده است.
man be ostâd farmudam ke noskhe âmâde ast.
I honorifically told the professor that the copy was ready. (well formed, but فرمودم elevates the speaker instead of expressing deference)
✅ به استاد عرض کردم که نسخه آماده است.
be ostâd arz kardam ke noskhe âmâde ast.
I told the professor that the copy was ready. (deferential speaker-lowering)
2. Raising the speaker's own ordinary arrival
⚠️ من فردا خدمت شما تشریف میآورم.
man fardâ khedmat-e shomâ tashrif mi-âvaram.
I will honorifically come to you tomorrow. (grammatical words, but تشریف آوردن wrongly elevates the speaker in this deferential frame)
✅ من فردا خدمت شما میرسم.
man fardâ khedmat-e shomâ mi-resam.
I will come see you tomorrow. (deferential speaker-lowering)
3. Assuming بفرمایید always means “say”
⚠️ میزبان کنار در گفت «بفرمایید»، پس حتما از من خواست حرف بزنم.
mizbân kenâr-e dar goft «be-farmâyid», pas hatman az man khâst harf bezanam.
The host said بفرمایید by the door, so he asked me to speak. (well-formed inference, but context instead invites entry)
✅ کنار در، بفرمایید یعنی دعوت به ورود.
kenâr-e dar, be-farmâyid ya'ni da'vat be vorud.
At a doorway, بفرمایید is an invitation to enter.
4. Stacking honorifics to maximize politeness
⚠️ قربان، استدعا دارم مرحمت فرموده و تشریف بیاورید جواب بدهید.
qorbân, ested'â dâram marhamat farmude va tashrif biyâvarid javâb bedahid.
Sir, I implore you to show favor and honorifically come answer. (grammatical ceremonial pieces, but excessive for an ordinary request)
✅ اگر ممکن است، لطفا تا فردا پاسخ بدهید.
agar momken ast, lotfan tâ fardâ pâsokh bedahid.
If possible, please reply by tomorrow. (clear neutral politeness)
Key Takeaways
- Honorific predicates encode direction: they raise an honored subject or lower the speaker.
- بفرمایید invites a contextually recoverable action; it does not always mean “say.”
- تشریف آوردن raises the person who comes; عرض کردن lowers the person who speaks.
- Colloquial بفرمایین، تشریف میارین can be coherent respectful Tehran forms.
- Recognize the full ceremonial inventory, but produce a smaller, controlled set appropriate to the relationship.
