This page presents an original journalistic pastiche: a short report written for the guide in the style of Iranian municipal news. The route, dates, officials, and figures are invented; the text is not a report of a real event and does not reproduce any news outlet.
The passage applies headline ellipsis, source attribution, passive and active packaging, present-perfect evidentiality, and limited verb-subject inversion. These features belong to formal journalistic Persian, not ordinary friendly conversation. For a wider register map, see Journalistic Persian.

New bus route opens in western Shiraz. Trial operation of a new bus route began this morning in western Shiraz. The municipality has announced that the route runs from Mo'allem Square to Farhang Metro Station. According to the municipal public-relations report, six new stops have been made accessible to people with disabilities. The implementation team also completed installation of the signs last week. The transport-organization director said the principal goal is to reduce metro access time for residents of three neighborhoods. According to him, twelve buses have initially been assigned to the route. Representatives of local councils and a group of residents attended the launch ceremony. Officials have asked citizens to submit their comments through the municipal portal by the end of the week.
Headline ellipsis
افتتاح مسیر تازهی اتوبوسرانی در غرب شیراز
eftetâh-e masir-e tâze-ye otobus-râni dar gharb-e Shirâz
New bus route opens in western Shiraz. (headline; literally ‘opening of a new bus route...’)
The headline is a noun phrase, not a finite sentence. افتتاح heads a long ezafe chain and no overt “was opened” appears. English headlines often insert a present-tense verb; the Persian headline can remain nominal because the news event is recoverable from the genre.
Headline ellipsis is productive but restricted by clarity. A headline may omit the copula or reporting verb, yet it must still name a recognizable event. Copying this noun-stack into conversation would sound bureaucratic.
آغاز ثبتنام اینترنتی کتابخانههای منطقه
âghâz-e sabt-nâm-e interneti-ye ketâb-khâne-hâ-ye manteqe
Online registration for the district libraries begins. (original headline fragment)
The lead restores a finite event
بهرهبرداری آزمایشی از مسیر تازه صبح امروز آغاز شد.
bahre-bardâri-ye âzmâyeshi az masir-e tâze sobh-e emruz âghâz shod.
Trial operation of the new route began this morning. (formal news lead)
Unlike the headline, the lead has finite آغاز شد. Persian places the time before the verb and can delay the most newsworthy predicate until the end. آغاز شدن is an intransitive event predicate; translating it as an English passive “was begun” would introduce an agent-oriented reading the Persian does not require.
Attribution and evidential perfect
شهرداری اعلام کرده است که این مسیر تا ایستگاه مترو ادامه دارد.
shahrdâri e'lâm karde ast ke in masir tâ istgâh-e metro edâme dârad.
The municipality has announced that this route continues to the metro station. (formal attributed report)
Present perfect اعلام کرده است presents an earlier announcement as current evidence for the report. It does not automatically mean the journalist doubts the claim. The named institutional source carries responsibility, while که introduces content with its own present tense.
به گفتهی مدیر طرح، زمان انتظار کاهش یافته است.
be gofte-ye modir-e tarh, zamân-e entezâr kâhesh yâfte ast.
According to the project director, waiting time has decreased. (formal attribution plus evidential perfect)
Fronted به گفتهی... tells readers whose assessment follows. English often uses according to in the same place, but Persian’s ezafe chain places the source title after گفته.
Passive when the result matters
شش ایستگاه جدید برای افراد کمتوان مناسبسازی شدهاند.
shesh istgâh-e jadid barâ-ye afrâd-e kam-tavân monâseb-sâzi shode-and.
Six new stops have been made accessible for people with disabilities. (formal result-focused passive)
The actor is not important; the accessible result is. The compound مناسبسازی کردن forms a passive with شدن. Plural شدهاند agrees with شش ایستگاه, though singular agreement is sometimes found with nonhuman plurals in other predicate types.
Active when agency is informative
گروه اجرایی نصب تابلوها را هفتهی گذشته به پایان رساند.
goruh-e ejrâyi nasb-e tâblu-hâ râ hafte-ye gozashte be pâyân resând.
The implementation team completed installation of the signs last week. (formal active report)
The active is shorter and clearer because گروه اجرایی is a relevant institutional actor. Persian journalism does not require a passive merely because English public writing might choose one. The object is the nominalized action نصب تابلوها.
Reported speech without automatic backshift
مدیر سازمان گفت هدف اصلی، کاهش زمان دسترسی ساکنان است.
modir-e sâzmân goft hadaf-e asli, kâhesh-e zamân-e dastresi-ye sâkenân ast.
The organization director said the principal goal is to reduce residents’ access time. (formal report)
Past گفت introduces a still-current goal, so the embedded copula remains present است. Persian does not obligatorily backshift it to بود. The complementizer که could be included, but concise reporting often omits it when the boundary remains clear.
Locative-first inversion
در آیین آغاز طرح حضور داشتند نمایندگان شوراهای محلی.
dar âyin-e âghâz-e tarh hozur dâshtand namâyandegân-e shurâ-hâ-ye mahalli.
Representatives of local councils attended the launch ceremony. (formal journalistic inversion)
The setting comes first, followed by verb and then the heavier subject. This marked verb-subject order packages the scene before introducing participants. Neutral prose could say نمایندگان شوراهای محلی در آیین... حضور داشتند. Inversion is an information-structure option, not a new agreement rule: plural داشتند still matches نمایندگان.
A public request
مسئولان از شهروندان خواستهاند نظرهای خود را در سامانه ثبت کنند.
mas'ulân az shahrvandân khâste-and nazar-hâ-ye khod râ dar sâmâne sabt konand.
Officials have asked citizens to submit their comments through the portal. (formal institutional request)
از کسی خواستن marks the requested participant with از. The requested action is finite subjunctive ثبت کنند, whose plural subject is the citizens, not the officials.
Common Mistakes
1. Turning the headline into a malformed clause
❌ افتتاح مسیر تازه شد در غرب شهر.
Incorrect — افتتاح cannot serve as this clause’s subject with the copied English order and meaning.
✅ مسیر تازهی شرقی صبح امروز افتتاح شد.
masir-e tâze-ye sharqi sobh-e emruz eftetâh shod.
The new eastern route opened this morning.
2. Backshifting a still-current claim automatically
⚠️ مدیر گفت هدف طرح کاهش ترافیک بود.
modir goft hadaf-e tarh kâhesh-e terâfik bud.
The director said the project’s goal was reducing traffic. (grammatical, but suggests the goal may no longer hold)
✅ سخنگو گفت هدف طرح کاهش رفتوآمد با خودرو است.
sokhan-gu goft hadaf-e tarh kâhesh-e raft-o-âmad bâ khodro ast.
The spokesperson said the project’s goal is reducing travel by car.
3. Using a passive when the agent is the point
⚠️ نصب تابلوها به پایان رسانده شد.
nasb-e tâblu-hâ be pâyân resânde shod.
Installation of the signs was brought to completion. (possible but bureaucratically heavy when the responsible team is known)
✅ گروه فنی همهی تابلوها را تا عصر نصب کرد.
goruh-e fanni hame-ye tâblu-hâ râ tâ asr nasb kard.
The technical team installed all the signs by the evening.
4. Losing agreement after inversion
❌ در نشست حضور داشت نمایندگان محلهها.
Incorrect here — the postverbal human plural subject still requires plural agreement.
✅ در نشست پایانی حضور داشتند نمایندگان پنج محله.
dar neshast-e pâyâni hozur dâshtand namâyandegân-e panj mahalle.
Representatives of five neighborhoods attended the final meeting.
Key Takeaways
- A Persian headline may be a nominal event label with no finite verb.
- Attribution phrases assign responsibility; present perfect can present the source’s report as currently relevant evidence.
- Passive and active voice package different news priorities, not simply different levels of formality.
- Persian reported speech retains a present tense when the reported claim still holds.
- Locative-first verb-subject inversion introduces a scene before a heavy or newsworthy subject.
