This path adds colloquial Tehran Persian to an already stable standard system. It introduces no reduction: every mapping belongs to one of the linked specialist pages. Complete B1 Narrative and Clause Building and the mastery check below first. If the standard form is uncertain, a reduced form becomes an isolated guess rather than a predictable member of a two-register pair.
The sequence is deliberately ordered. Learn the reduced copula before similar ـه verb endings; master regular endings before storing irregular spoken stems; then add phonological raising, object-marker allomorphs, function words, and the plural. At every stage, keep three abilities separate: understand the spoken form, map it to standard writing, and use it in an appropriately informal interaction.
Standard mastery check
Before Stage ۱, produce and write these functions in standard Iranian Persian: present and past agreement for all persons, است/هست and نیست, a را-marked identifiable object, ـها, and high-frequency verbs such as رفتن، گفتن، خواستن، دادن، آمدن، شدن، توانستن. You should also be able to tell whether a message, classroom answer, report, or friendly voice note calls for writing or speech.
دوستم فردا کتابها را به دانشگاه میآورد.
dust-am fardâ ketâb-hâ râ be dâneshgâh mi-âvarad.
My friend will bring the books to the university tomorrow. (standard mastery check)
اگر وقت داشته باشیم، بعد از کلاس صحبت میکنیم.
agar vaqt dâshte bâshim, ba'd az kelâs sohbat mi-konim.
If we have time, we will talk after class. (standard mastery check)
Pass when you can change subject, tense, polarity, and object without losing agreement or را. Then study From Standard to Tehran Speech: A Safe On-Ramp and the Tehran Colloquial System Overview.
The seven-rule route
| Stage | Core mapping | Why this order? |
|---|---|---|
| ۱ | است ← ـه/ـست | establishes predication before verbal ـه |
| ۲ | ـد ← ـه؛ ـند ← ـن | creates regular third-person agreement |
| ۳ | high-frequency irregular spoken stems | extends known agreement over stored bases |
| ۴ | آ ← او before certain nasals | adds a phonological mapping with lexical limits |
| ۵ | را ← رو/ـو | adds object marking after word-shape awareness |
| ۶ | reduced function words | changes frequent whole words inside a stable clause |
| ۷ | ـها ← ـا after many consonants | combines number with the object-marker sequence |
Stage ۱: Reduce the copula, not every است-shaped sequence
Use Reduced Copula است to ـه or ـست. After a consonant, third-singular است commonly surfaces as ـه. After final ه or ا, ـست commonly remains; final ی usually takes glide-bearing ـیه. Negative نیست follows its own pattern and must not be replaced by a guessed نه.
هوا امشب سرده، ولی اتاق گرمه.
havâ emshab sard-e, vali otâq garm-e.
The weather is cold tonight, but the room is warm. (colloquial Tehran)
این صندلی خالی نیست؛ صندلی کناری خالیه.
in sandali khâli nist; sandali-ye kenâri khâli-e.
This chair isn't free; the chair beside it is. (colloquial Tehran)
Production goal: describe five people or objects with affirmative and negative predicates. For each ـه, identify whether it is copula before continuing.
Stage ۲: Add regular third-person verb endings
Study Present Third-Person Endings. Standard third-singular ـد commonly corresponds to colloquial ـه, and third-plural ـند to ـن. This verbal ـه attaches to a present stem; the copular ـه follows a nonverbal predicate. Learn them in full clauses.
نیما هر روز با مترو میره و خواهرهاش با اتوبوس میرن.
Nimâ har ruz bâ metro mir-e va khâhar-hâ-sh bâ otobus mir-an.
Nima takes the metro every day, and his sisters take the bus. (colloquial Tehran)
مغازه ساعت نه باز میشه و کارمندها زودتر میرسن.
maghâze sâ'at-e noh bâz mi-she va kârmand-hâ zud-tar mi-res-an.
The shop opens at nine, and the employees arrive earlier. (colloquial Tehran)
Production goal: alternate one third-singular and one third-plural subject across six clauses. Review loop: restore each to standard ـد/ـند in writing.
Stage ۳: Store irregular spoken bases as paradigms
Work through Irregular Spoken Verb Stems: میرم، میگم، میخوام، میدم، میام، میشم، بذار are high-frequency mappings, not outputs of one universal deletion rule. Store one base, then extend person and polarity only where the specialist page verifies it.
فردا میام، جواب میدم و بعد میرم.
fardâ mi-âm, javâb mi-dam va ba'd mi-ram.
I'll come tomorrow, give an answer, and then leave. (colloquial Tehran)
نمیخوایم الان جواب بدیم؛ بذار اول بررسی کنیم.
nemi-khâyim alân javâb bedim; bezâr avval barrasi konim.
We don't want to answer now; let us check first. (colloquial Tehran)
Production goal: make a small two-column card for each verb: full standard paradigm cue and verified colloquial base. Test recognition from audio before producing it.
Stage ۴: Hear â-to-u raising without inventing it everywhere
Use Raising â to u before Nasals. The mapping appears in high-frequency items such as آن ← اون، نان ← نون، خانه ← خونه، نمیدانم ← نمیدونم, but phonological environment alone does not license it in every word. Keep a lexical exception list.
اون نون تازه از نونوایی نزدیک خونهست.
un nun-e tâze az nunvâyi-ye nazdik-e khune-st.
That fresh bread is from the bakery near home. (colloquial Tehran)
نمیدونم مهمونمون چه ساعتی میرسه.
nemi-dunam mehmun-emun che sâ'ati mi-res-e.
I don't know what time our guest will arrive. (colloquial Tehran)
Production goal: map ten verified standard/colloquial pairs in both directions, then reject three tempting but unattested guesses.
Stage ۵: Map را to رو or ـو
Review the discourse function of را, then study Object Marker را to رو or ـو. In common Tehran speech, رو follows many vowel-final hosts and may also occur more broadly; clitic-like ـو commonly follows consonant-final hosts. Neither is the conjunction و, even when both are pronounced o in connected speech.
نامه رو دیدی یا فقط پیامو خوندی؟
nâme ro didi yâ faqat payâm-o khundi?
Did you see the letter, or did you only read the message? (colloquial Tehran)
کلیدو گذاشتم روی میز؛ لطفا برش دار.
kelid-o gozâshtam ru-ye miz; lotfâ bar-esh dâr.
I put the key on the table; please pick it up. (colloquial Tehran)
Production goal: transcribe five object phrases from speech and restore standard را. Keep object identifiability unchanged; only its register realization changes.
Stage ۶: Add reduced function words as whole mappings
Use Reduced Function Words: یک/یه، اگر/اگه، دیگر/دیگه، چه/چی، برای/واسه، در/تو، روی/رو. Several are lexical choices or fusions, not one sound law. Learn them in register-pure clauses.
اگه یه کم دیرتر بیای، من دیگه تو دفتر نیستم.
age ye kam dir-tar biyây, man dige tu daftar nistam.
If you come a little later, I won't be at the office anymore. (colloquial Tehran)
واسه فردا چی لازم داری؟
vâse fardâ chi lâzem dâri?
What do you need for tomorrow? (colloquial Tehran)
Production goal: hold a four-turn informal planning exchange using four verified function-word mappings, then rewrite it in standard Persian without changing meaning.
Stage ۷: Reduce ـها only in the licensed shape
Finish with Plural ها to ـا. After many consonant-final nouns, ـها becomes ـا: کتابها ← کتابا. Vowel-final nouns do not all follow the same surface path, and the plural must combine correctly with possessor and object marking.
بچهها رسیدن، ولی بزرگترا هنوز تو راهن.
bache-hâ resid-an, vali bozorg-tarâ hanuz tu râh-an.
The children arrived, but the adults are still on the way. (colloquial Tehran)
کتابای قدیمیو نگه داشتم و بقیه رو بخشیدم.
ketâbâ-ye qadimi-o negah dâshtam va baqiye ro bakhshidam.
I kept the old books and gave the rest away. (colloquial Tehran)
Production goal: build plural + adjective + object-marker phrases, then restore ـها + ezafe + را in standard writing.
Spiral review: hear, map, and choose
After each stage, replay earlier material through three passes: transcribe what you hear colloquially; restore a standard written counterpart; then decide whether informal production is socially appropriate. Use Register-Pure Sentences as the editing test.
فردا بچهها را به کتابخانه میبریم.
fardâ bache-hâ râ be ketâbkhâne mi-barim.
Tomorrow we will take the children to the library. (standard)
فردا بچهها رو میبریم کتابخونه.
fardâ bache-hâ ro mi-barim ketâbkhune.
Tomorrow we're taking the children to the library. (colloquial Tehran)
These are two coherent register choices, not a command to reduce every word maximally. Speakers vary reduction with audience, speed, stance, and formality.
Common Mistakes
Starting from an uncertain standard form
❌ میخوادن زود برن.
Malformed agreement: an impossible ending sequence has been attached to the verb.
✅ میخوان زود برن.
mi-khân zud ber-an.
They want to leave early. (colloquial Tehran)
Treating every ـه as the copula
⚠️ در جملهی «علی میره»، ـه فعل ربطی است.
dar jomle-ye ‘Ali mire,’ -e fe'l-e rabti ast.
In Ali mire, -e is the copula. (grammatical claim, but analytically false: it is third-singular verbal agreement)
✅ در «علی میره»، ـه پایان فعل رفتن است.
dar ‘Ali mire,’ -e pâyân-e fe'l-e raftan ast.
In Ali mire, -e is the ending of the verb raftan.
Raising every â before a nasal
⚠️ هر «آ» پیش از «ن» باید «او» تلفظ شود.
har â pish az n bâyad u talaffoz shavad.
Every â before n must be pronounced u. (grammatical, but a false overgeneralization)
✅ ایران کشور پهناوریه.
Irân keshvar-e pahnâvari-e.
Iran is a vast country. (colloquial predicate with unreduced lexical vowels)
Mixing formal vocabulary with maximal reductions accidentally
⚠️ مراتب قدردانیمونو خدمتتون اعلام میکنیم.
marâteb-e qadredâni-mun-o khedmat-etun e'lâm mi-konim.
We convey the degrees of our appreciation to you. (possible comic or stylized mixture, not a neutral formal sentence)
✅ از کمکتون خیلی ممنونیم.
az komak-etun kheyli mamnun-im.
Thank you very much for your help. (polite conversational Tehran Persian)
Diagnostic exit task
Record a one-minute informal voice message arranging a meeting. Include a reduced copula, third-singular and third-plural verbs, two verified irregular bases, one â-to-u item, two object-marker hosts, three reduced function words, and one reduced plural. Then transcribe it colloquially and rewrite the same message in standard Persian.
Pass when every colloquial form maps to a known standard form, agreement remains intact, رو/ـو marks the same identifiable objects as را, and neither version contains an accidental half-formal hybrid. Keep both outputs: the goal is bilingual-style register control inside one language, not replacing standard Persian with slang.
Key Takeaways
Enter Tehran speech through ordered mappings, not random deletions. Standard mastery supports recognition; recognition precedes production; register choice completes the skill.
