Object Marker را to رو or ـو

Standard object marker را normally corresponds to رو ro or weak ـو -o in everyday Tehran Persian. After a vowel-final noun phrase, رو remains clearly audible and separate: نامه رو، علی رو. After a consonant-final host, ordinary connected speech often reduces it to bound ـو: کتاب‌و، دوستم‌و (informal, regional: Tehran).

The marker’s syntax does not change. It still follows the complete identifiable or specific direct-object phrase. Reduction affects its phonological host, not the decision about which objects receive it. Review that decision on Differential Object Marking with را; this page maps the selected marker into Tehran speech.

After a consonant, fuller رو also occurs, especially in slower speech, emphasis, and transparent informal writing. The ـو pattern is a strong connected-speech preference, not a ban on every consonant + رو sequence. After a vowel, رو prevents the marker from disappearing into an ambiguous vowel sequence.

نامه رو گذاشتم روی میز آشپزخونه.

nâme ro gozâshtam ru-ye miz-e âshpazkhune.

I put the letter on the kitchen table. (informal, regional: Tehran; post-vowel رو)

دیشب علی رو جلوی سینما دیدم.

dishab Ali ro jelo-ye sinemâ didam.

I saw Ali in front of the cinema last night. (informal, regional: Tehran; name ending in i)

کتاب‌و خوندم، ولی یادداشتاش‌و هنوز ننوشتم.

ketâb-o khundam, vali yâddâshtâ-sh-o hanuz na-neveshtam.

I read the book, but I haven’t written its notes yet. (informal, regional: Tehran; post-consonant ـو)

💡
Find the right edge of the whole object phrase first. Only then choose رو or ـو from the final sound of that edge.

The Marker Closes the Whole Noun Phrase

Modifiers, possessors, plural endings, and possessive clitics belong inside the marked object. رو/ـو follows all of them: اون نامه‌ی قدیمی رو، کتابای جدیدم‌و. It does not sit immediately after the head noun merely because English places object pronouns near the verb.

اون نامه‌ی قدیمی رو بالاخره پیدا کردم.

un nâme-ye qadimi ro bâlâkhare peydâ kardam.

I finally found that old letter. (informal, regional: Tehran)

کتابای جدیدم‌و به سارا قرض دادم.

ketâbâ-ye jadid-am-o be Sârâ qarz dâdam.

I lent my new books to Sara. (informal, regional: Tehran)

شماره‌ای که فرستادی رو اشتباه ذخیره کردم.

shomâre-i ke ferestâdi ro eshtebâh zakhire kardam.

I saved the number you sent incorrectly. (informal Tehran speech; marker after a relative clause)

The last host is the full relative phrase شماره‌ای که فرستادی. Because its spoken right edge ends in a vowel, separate رو is natural.

Which Objects Receive It?

Conversational reduction does not turn را into a general accusative ending. Identifiable people and things, demonstrative phrases, possessed objects, and intended specific indefinites commonly take it. Bare nonspecific objects can remain unmarked: کتاب خریدم “I bought books/a book” versus اون کتاب‌و خریدم “I bought that book.”

برای سفر کفش خریدم.

barâ-ye safar kafsh kharidam.

I bought shoes for the trip. (informal-neutral; nonspecific bare object)

اون کفش مشکی رو برای سفر خریدم.

un kafsh-e meshki ro barâ-ye safar kharidam.

I bought that black shoe for the trip. (informal, regional: Tehran; identifiable object)

یه تعمیرکار مطمئن‌و پیدا کردم که فردا میاد.

ye ta'mirkâr-e motma'en-o peydâ kardam ke fardâ miyâd.

I found a reliable repairer who is coming tomorrow. (informal Tehran speech; specific indefinite)

Thus definiteness is a useful learner cue but not the whole rule. Specificity, animacy, identifiability, and discourse all contribute.

رو after Vowels, ـو after Consonants

The host distinction is easiest to hear in a controlled contrast. خونه رو retains r because خونه ends in a vowel. ساختمون‌و loses it after final n. Both mark the same syntactic role.

خونه رو فروختن، ولی زمین‌و نگه داشتن.

khune ro forukhtan, vali zamin-o negah dâshtan.

They sold the house but kept the land. (informal, regional: Tehran)

ساختمون‌و دیدیم، اما داخلش‌و هنوز ندیدیم.

sâkhtemun-o didim, ammâ dâkhel-ash-o hanuz na-didim.

We saw the building, but we haven’t seen its interior yet. (informal, regional: Tehran)

The spelling ـو represents grammatical attachment for teaching. Everyday messages may write کتابو solid or choose separate کتاب رو. Do not mistake orthographic variation for a different object-marking rule.

Object ـو versus Conjunction و

Connected conjunction و is often pronounced -o after the preceding word. The object marker ـو can sound identical. Position distinguishes them: conjunction -o links two units inside a phrase; object -o follows the complete phrase.

چای و کیک‌و گذاشتم روی میز.

chây-o keyk-o gozâshtam ru-ye miz.

I put the tea and cake on the table. (informal connected speech)

The first written و coordinates چای and کیک. The final ـو marks the entire coordination as the object of گذاشتم. If you translate both sounds as English and, the clause loses its object marker.

مامان و بابا رو توی فرودگاه دیدم.

mâmân-o bâbâ ro tu-ye forudgâh didam.

I saw Mom and Dad at the airport. (informal Tehran speech; conjunction inside a vowel-final object phrase)

لیوان‌و بشقاب‌و شستم.

livân-o boshqâb-o shostam.

I washed the glass and the plate. (informal; first ـو can coordinate in a list-like reading, final ـو marks the object phrase)

The last sentence is structurally recoverable but acoustically dense. A speaker may use fuller لیوان و بشقاب رو for clarity. Reduction is favored, not obligatory at every possible boundary.

Pronouns and Focus

Frequent منو، تورو، اونو are conventional object forms. They are weakly integrated but can still be the whole object phrase. For contrast, a fuller phrase or stress may be clearer.

منو دید، ولی چیزی نگفت.

man-o did, vali chizi na-goft.

He or she saw me but said nothing. (informal, regional: Tehran)

تورو دعوت کردن یا خواهرت‌و؟

to-ro da'vat kardan yâ khâhar-et-o?

Did they invite you or your sister? (informal Tehran speech; contrastive alternatives)

A Short Dialogue

— کلید ماشین‌و دیدی؟ — آره، کلید‌و کنار کیف قرمز گذاشتم.

— kelid-e mâshin-o didi? — âre, kelid-o kenâr-e keyf-e qermez gozâshtam.

— Have you seen the car key? — Yes, I put the key beside the red bag. (informal, regional: Tehran)

Common Mistakes

1. Placing رو before the object

❌ رو این نامه خوندم.

Incorrect object-marker position — رو follows the complete object phrase.

✅ این نامه رو دیشب خوندم.

in nâme ro dishab khundam.

I read this letter last night. (informal, regional: Tehran)

2. Treating every -o as “and”

⚠️ گزارش‌و خوندم یعنی گزارش و چیزی دیگر را خواندم.

gozâresh-o khundam ya'ni gozâresh va chizi-ye digar râ khândam.

گزارش‌و خوندم means I read the report and something else. The sentence is grammatical, but this analysis mistakes the object marker for conjunction و.

✅ گزارش‌و خوندم و نکته‌های اصلیش‌و نوشتم.

gozâresh-o khundam va nokte-hâ-ye asli-sh-o neveshtam.

I read the report and wrote down its main points. (informal Tehran speech; two object markers plus one conjunction)

3. Marking every direct object

⚠️ هر روز قهوه رو می‌خورم، حتی وقتی منظورم قهوه به‌طور کلی است.

har ruz qahve ro mi-khoram, hattâ vaqti manzur-am qahve be-towr-e kolli ast.

I drink the coffee every day, even when I mean coffee generally. Grammatical, but رو creates an identifiable reading that conflicts with the stated generic intent.

✅ هر روز صبح قهوه می‌خورم.

har ruz sobh qahve mi-khoram.

I drink coffee every morning. (bare nonspecific object)

4. Using reduced object marking in formal prose

⚠️ پژوهش حاضر این فرضیه رو بررسی می‌کند.

pazhuhesh-e hâzer in farziye ro barrasi mi-konad.

The present study examines this hypothesis. Grammatical register mixture: colloquial رو appears inside formal academic prose.

✅ پژوهش حاضر این فرضیه را بررسی می‌کند.

pazhuhesh-e hâzer in farziye râ barrasi mi-konad.

The present study examines this hypothesis. (formal written standard)

Key Takeaways

  • Tehran رو/ـو preserves the syntax and discourse function of standard را.
  • Prefer رو after vowel-final objects and weak ـو after consonant-final hosts, while recognizing fuller variants.
  • Place the marker after the complete noun phrase, including modifiers and clitics.
  • Do not mark nonspecific bare objects merely because they are direct objects.
  • Parse identical -o sounds by position: conjunction inside a phrase, object marker at its right edge.
