Persian marks direct objects differentially: an identifiable or particular object normally takes را, while a bare nonspecific object often appears without it. Compare کتاب خریدم “I did some book-buying/I bought a book or books” with آن کتاب را خریدم “I bought that book.” The difference is not simply “object versus non-object”; both noun phrases are direct objects.
English marks neither object in this way, while languages with accusative case often mark nearly every direct object. Persian را is different from both systems. It follows the complete noun phrase and reflects how the speaker presents the referent in the discourse.
The central scale
| Object type | Usual marking | Example | Interpretive effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| personal pronoun or proper name | را | او را، مریم را | inherently identifiable referent |
| demonstrative or accessible definite | را | این نامه را، کلیدم را | speaker points to a particular object |
| specific indefinite | often را | پزشکی را میشناسم | one particular but not mutually identified referent |
| nonspecific count or mass object | usually bare | کتاب خریدم، چای میخورم | kind, quantity, or activity foregrounded |
| generic class | usually bare | کودک قصه دوست دارد | class-level interpretation |
This is a hierarchy of strong tendencies, not a substitution test based on the English articles a and the. Context can make a noun specific without a demonstrative, and an indefinite phrase can take را.
Identifiable objects normally take را
Personal pronouns, proper names, demonstrative phrases, possessed nouns, and previously established objects are normally identifiable. As direct objects they take را in neutral standard Persian.
مریم را جلوی کتابخانه دیدم.
Maryam râ jelow-ye ketâbkhâne didam.
I saw Maryam in front of the library. (neutral standard)
این نسخهی قرارداد را برای وکیل فرستادیم.
in noskhe-ye qarârdâd râ barâ-ye vakil ferestâdim.
We sent this copy of the contract to the lawyer. (neutral formal)
بالاخره عینکم را زیر صندلی پیدا کردم.
bâlâkhare eynak-am râ zir-e sandali peydâ kardam.
I finally found my glasses under the chair. (neutral)
The marker follows the entire noun phrase: این نسخهی قرارداد را, not این را نسخهی قرارداد. For its basic postpositional behavior, see the first orientation to را.
Bare objects foreground an activity or kind
A bare noun immediately before the verb can be number-neutral and weakly individuated. کتاب خواندم may mean that the speaker engaged in book-reading, without saying which book or even insisting on exactly one. چای خریدیم presents tea as a substance or purchase category. Such objects often form a close semantic unit with the verb.
در راه برگشت نان و میوه خریدیم.
dar râh-e bargasht nân va mive kharidim.
On the way back, we bought bread and fruit. (neutral; nonspecific categories)
آخر هفته معمولا فیلم میبینیم.
âkhar-e hafte ma'mulan film mi-binim.
We usually watch films at the weekend. (neutral; habitual kind-level object)
برای اتاق مهمان پرده میدوزد.
barâ-ye otâq-e mehmân parde mi-duzad.
She is sewing curtains for the guest room. (neutral; number and identity not foregrounded)
Adding را asks for a particular discourse object. پرده را میدوزد means she is sewing the relevant curtain; it no longer merely characterizes the activity.
Specificity is not the same as definiteness
A referent can be new to the listener yet particular in the speaker's mind. Such specific indefinites often take را: the speaker can identify the individual and may continue describing it, although the listener cannot yet do so.
یک مترجم را میشناسم که میتواند این متن را تا فردا آماده کند.
yek motarjem râ mi-shenâsam ke mi-tavânad in matn râ tâ fardâ âmâde konad.
I know a translator who can have this text ready by tomorrow. (specific indefinite)
دنبال مترجم میگردیم، اما هنوز کسی را انتخاب نکردهایم.
donbâl-e motarjem mi-gardim, ammâ hanuz kasi râ entekhâb na-karde-im.
We are looking for a translator, but we have not selected anyone yet. (nonspecific role, then negative indefinite object)
Animacy makes particular individuals cognitively salient, so animate objects frequently take را. It does not trigger the marker automatically: دنبال پرستار میگردیم can seek any suitable nurse, while پرستاری را که دیروز آمد دوباره دعوت کردیم identifies one nurse.
Discourse accessibility changes the marking
First mention often introduces a bare or indefinite object. Once the referent is established, later mention commonly takes را. This does not mean that first mentions can never be specific; it shows why accessibility is one major factor.
کنار آسانسور یک کارت پیدا کردم. کارت را به نگهبانی تحویل دادم.
kenâr-e âsânsur yek kârt peydâ kardam. kârt râ be negahbâni tahvil dâdam.
I found a card beside the elevator. I handed the card in to security. (new referent, then accessible referent)
Compare two fully grammatical purchase reports:
امروز برای کلاس فرهنگ خریدم.
emruz barâ-ye kelâs farhang kharidam.
Today I bought a dictionary for class. (the purchase category is foregrounded)
امروز آن فرهنگ دوزبانه را خریدم.
emruz ân farhang-e do-zabâne râ kharidam.
Today I bought that bilingual dictionary. (identified object)
Omitting or adding را here changes construal; it is not free stylistic variation.
Why no single feature predicts every token
Specificity explains the central contrast, but را is not a pure “specific” morpheme. Quantified and negative pronouns can take it without referring to one particular individual: همه را دعوت کردیم “we invited everyone,” کسی را انتخاب نکردیم “we selected no one.” Their quantificational force determines reference, while را marks the delimited direct-object expression. Affectedness and topicality can also strengthen marking in borderline contexts.
هیچکس را پشت در منتظر نگذاشتیم.
hich-kas râ posht-e dar montazer na-gozâshtim.
We did not leave anyone waiting outside the door. (negative quantified object, not a specific person)
پیش از شروع برنامه همه را به سالن راهنمایی کردند.
pish az shoru'-e barnâme hame râ be sâlon râhnamâyi kardand.
Before the program began, they guided everyone into the hall. (quantified human object)
This is why the term differential object marking is preferable to “definite marker.” Definiteness, specificity, animacy, accessibility, quantification, and construction type interact; no English article supplies a mechanical answer.
Word order and information structure
را-marked objects are readily separated from the verb or moved toward the left edge because the marker preserves their grammatical role. A bare nonspecific object tends to remain close to the verb. This is a tendency rather than a ban: focus, weight, and register can change constituent order.
این مشکل را ما بدون کمک بیرونی حل کردیم.
in moshkel râ mâ bedun-e komak-e biruni hall kardim.
We solved this problem without outside help. (contrastive subject; identifiable object fronted)
Written را and colloquial forms
When the marker is present, careful speech and ordinary formal writing use its full form را. In (informal, regional: Tehran) speech it commonly appears as رو or a bound ـو, with phonological form influenced by the preceding word. These are real spoken variants, not errors, but they do not belong in an otherwise formal document.
این فیلم رو دیشب دیدی؟
in film ro dishab didi?
Did you see this film last night? (informal, regional: Tehran)
— پرونده را کجا گذاشتی؟ — همان پروندهی آبی را میگویی؟ روی میز است.
— parvande râ kojâ gozâshti? — hamân parvande-ye âbi râ mi-guyi? ru-ye miz ast.
— Where did you put the file? — Do you mean that blue file? It's on the table. (careful spoken standard)
Common Mistakes
1. Placing را before the object
❌ من را این نامه فرستادم.
Incorrect for ‘I sent this letter’ — را follows its object noun phrase.
✅ من این نامه را صبح فرستادم.
man in nâme râ sobh ferestâdam.
I sent this letter in the morning.
2. Omitting را from a demonstrative direct object
❌ این پیام مهم دیروز پاک کردم.
Incorrect in the intended neutral reading — the identified demonstrative object requires را.
✅ این پیام مهم را دیروز پاک کردم.
in payâm-e mohem râ diruz pâk kardam.
I deleted this important message yesterday.
3. Marking a prepositional recipient with را
❌ خبر را به مدیر را گفتیم.
Incorrect — را marks the direct object خبر; the recipient remains a به phrase.
✅ خبر را همان روز به مدیر گفتیم.
khabar râ hamân ruz be modir goftim.
We told the manager the news that same day.
4. Mixing written and colloquial markers
❌ این گزارش را رو خواندم.
Incorrect — را and رو are alternative register forms, not a doubled marker.
✅ این گزارش را با دقت خواندم.
in gozâresh râ bâ deqqat khândam.
I read this report carefully. (standard)
Key Takeaways
- را marks direct objects presented as identifiable, accessible, or particular; it is not general accusative case.
- Bare objects often foreground an activity, kind, or nonspecific quantity.
- Animacy encourages specificity but does not mechanically require را.
- The marker follows the whole noun phrase and surfaces as رو/ـو in explicitly colloquial Tehrani usage.
