Everyday Tehran Persian uses a connected set of high-frequency function words: یه، اگه، دیگه، چی، واسه، تو، رو alongside standard یک، اگر، دیگر، چه، برای، در، روی. Some are phonological reductions, while others are conventional conversational alternatives. None is created by a general instruction to “delete the last sound.”
These forms are (informal, regional: Tehran). They belong in dialogue, messages, and familiar conversation. Standard or careful speech keeps the full counterparts. Real speakers vary their degree of reduction, but learners should first map complete sentences so that pronouns, verbs, object marking, and function words support one coherent register.
Core Mapping
| Standard/careful | Tehran colloquial | Function | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| یک | یه | one / indefinite introducer | exact contrastive counting can favor full یک |
| اگر | اگه | if | not edited formal spelling |
| دیگر | دیگه | other, anymore, discourse “then” | meaning still depends on position |
| چه | چی | what | چه + noun often survives in set/question patterns |
| برای | واسه | for | colloquial lexical alternative, not a formal contraction |
| در | تو / توی | in | در remains in fixed and formal phrases |
| روی | رو | on | do not confuse with object marker رو |
The larger system is introduced on Tehran Colloquial System Overview.
یک to یه
Article-like or unstressed یک normally becomes یه in Tehran conversation. It can introduce a person or thing or mean “one” without strong contrast. When the number itself is corrected—one, not two—some speakers use a clearer full یک or strong stress.
یه نفر پشت در منتظره.
ye nafar posht-e dar montazere.
Someone is waiting behind the door. (informal, regional: Tehran)
واسه فردا یه بلیت اضافه گرفتم.
vâse fardâ ye belit-e ezâfe gereftam.
I got an extra ticket for tomorrow. (informal, regional: Tehran)
فقط یک صندلی میخوایم، نه دوتا.
faqat yek sandali mi-khâym, na do-tâ.
We need only one chair, not two. (informal syntax with contrastively full یک)
The third sentence is a natural mixed degree of phonetic reduction, not a malformed hybrid: یک has a communicative reason to remain full.
اگر to اگه and دیگر to دیگه
اگه introduces the same real and hypothetical conditional relations as اگر; mood and tense do not disappear. دیگه retains several meanings of دیگر: “another,” “anymore,” “else,” or a discourse signal that a conclusion has been reached.
اگه زود راه بیفتیم، به ترافیک نمیخوریم.
age zud râh biyoftim, be terâfik na-mi-khorim.
If we leave early, we won't hit traffic. (informal, regional: Tehran)
دیگه قهوه نمیخورم؛ خوابم نمیبره.
dige qahve na-mi-khoram; khâb-am na-mi-bare.
I don't drink coffee anymore; I can't fall asleep. (informal, regional: Tehran)
اگه سؤال دیگهای داری، الان بپرس.
age so'âl-e dige-i dâri, alân be-pors.
If you have another question, ask now. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Do not translate دیگه mechanically as “other.” Its scope and the polarity of the clause distinguish “another” from “no longer.”
چه to چی
Independent interrogative چه commonly becomes چی: چی میخوای؟ “What do you want?” Before a noun, چه remains frequent even in conversation: چه ساعتی؟، چه رنگی؟ Colloquial چی can also precede some nouns, but it is not a universal letter-for-letter replacement.
چی میخوای واسه شام درست کنیم؟
chi mi-khây vâse shâm dorost konim?
What do you want us to make for dinner? (informal, regional: Tehran)
چه ساعتی میرسی خونه؟
che sâ'ati mi-rasi khune?
What time will you get home? (informal Tehran sentence retaining چه before a noun)
این دیگه چیه؟
in dige chiye?
What on earth is this now? (informal; دیگه adds stance, ـه is the copula)
برای to واسه
واسه is the broad familiar alternative to برای for beneficiary, purpose, intended recipient, and viewpoint. It is not appropriate in edited reports, and it does not replace every compound expression containing برای automatically.
این کتابو واسه تولدت خریدم.
in ketâb-o vâse tavallod-at kharidam.
I bought this book for your birthday. (informal, regional: Tehran)
واسه من فرقی نمیکنه؛ هرجا راحتی بریم.
vâse man farqi na-mi-kone; har-jâ râhati berim.
It makes no difference to me; let's go wherever works for you. (informal, regional: Tehran)
In careful speech, use برای من فرقی نمیکند. The choice is register, not meaning or politeness by itself.
در to تو/توی
Locative در often corresponds to تو or توی in conversation. تو can stand before a location phrase, while توی overtly links to a following noun phrase. Both may mean “in/inside.” Formal or lexical expressions such as در واقع، در دسترس، در نتیجه do not freely become تو واقع or تو دسترس.
کلیدا تو کشوی بالان.
kelidâ tu kashu-ye bâlân.
The keys are in the top drawer. (informal, regional: Tehran)
بچهها توی حیاط بازی میکنن.
bachche-hâ tu-ye hayât bâzi mi-konan.
The children are playing in the yard. (informal, regional: Tehran; vowel-final plural retains ها)
شماره توی گوشیم ذخیرهست.
shomâre tu-ye gushim zakhire-st.
The number is saved in my phone. (informal, regional: Tehran)
روی to رو—and رو as Object Marker
Prepositional روی “on” may reduce to رو before its complement. Object marker را also becomes رو in Tehran speech. Compare رو میز “on the table” with کتابو or کتاب رو “the book” as object.
گوشیت رو میزه.
gushit ru mize.
Your phone is on the table. (informal; رو means ‘on,’ ـه is copula)
گوشیتو از رو میز برداشتم.
gushit-o az ru miz bardâshtam.
I picked up your phone from the table. (informal; ـو marks object, رو means ‘on’)
The two forms can occur in one clause because they have different hosts and functions.
Standard–Colloquial Minimal Contrast
اگر چیزی برای شام میخواهی، در یخچال است.
agar chizi barâ-ye shâm mi-khâhi, dar yakhchâl ast.
If you want something for dinner, it is in the refrigerator. (careful standard)
❌ اگه چی واسه شام میخوای، تو یخچاله.
Malformed for the intended indefinite conditional — interrogative چی cannot replace چیزی here.
The second intended meaning is more naturally اگه چیزی..., not اگه چی... in an indefinite conditional. This contrast exposes an important restriction: interrogative چی does not replace indefinite چیزی. A truly natural colloquial version follows:
✅ اگه چیزی واسه شام میخوای، تو یخچاله.
age chizi vâse shâm mi-khây, tu yakhchâle.
If you want something for dinner, it's in the refrigerator. (informal, regional: Tehran)
A Connected Dialogue
— اگه فردا وقت داشتی، بیا یه قهوه بخوریم. — کجا؟ — همون کافهای که توی پارکه.
— age fardâ vaqt dâshti, biyâ ye qahve be-khorim. — kojâ? — hamun kâfe-i ke tu-ye pârk-e.
— If you have time tomorrow, let's have coffee. — Where? — That café in the park. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Reducing every form mechanically
Do not impose a mechanical rule that every چه must become چی. Before a noun, چه often remains natural in ordinary conversation:
✅ چه ساعتی از خونه راه میافتی؟
che sâ'ati az khune râh mi-ofti?
What time are you leaving home? (informal, regional: Tehran)
2. Replacing fixed در expressions with تو
❌ تو نتیجه باید زودتر حرکت کنیم.
Malformed for ‘therefore’ — fixed در نتیجه does not undergo the locative substitution.
✅ در نتیجه باید زودتر راه بیفتیم.
dar natije bâyad zud-tar râh biyoftim.
Therefore, we have to leave earlier. (neutral; fixed expression retained)
3. Confusing the two رو forms
In گوشیت رو میزه, the first رو introduces the location میز; it is not an object marker. A clause containing both uses makes the contrast especially clear:
✅ کیفمو رو صندلی گذاشتم.
keyf-am-o ru sandali gozâshtam.
I put my bag on the chair. (informal; ـو object marker, رو preposition)
4. Inserting one colloquial word into ceremonial prose unintentionally
⚠️ بدینوسیله واسه همکاری شما تشکر میکنیم.
be-din-vasile vâse hamkâri-ye shomâ tashakkor mi-konim.
We hereby thank you for your cooperation. Grammatically interpretable, but بدینوسیله and واسه create an unmotivated register collision.
✅ از همکاری شما سپاسگزاریم.
az hamkâri-ye shomâ sepâsgozârim.
Thank you for your cooperation. (clear formal)
Key Takeaways
- Map یک/یه، اگر/اگه، دیگر/دیگه، چه/چی، برای/واسه، در/تو، روی/رو by function and context.
- Exact contrast can preserve full یک; noun-modifying چه often survives in colloquial speech.
- تو/توی replace locative در, not every fixed expression containing it.
- Prepositional رو “on” and object-marker رو/ـو are homophonous but structurally distinct.
- Learn whole colloquial clauses; do not apply a blanket deletion rule.
- Register coherence is a communicative target, not a demand that every word reduce maximally.
