Standard plural ـها often surfaces as bare ـا after a consonant in everyday Tehran Persian. Thus standard کتابها، دوستها، مهمانها have the conversational forms کتابا، دوستا، مهمونا. Vowel-final hosts are less uniform: this guide retains ها in common final-ه forms such as بچهها، خونهها, while final ـی commonly produces a glide in strongly colloquial صندلیا. The pattern is phonologically conditioned, not a command to replace every written ها with ا.
This reduction is (informal, regional: Tehran). It does not itself mark definiteness, and it does not alter the syntax of a specific object: colloquial رو/ـو still follows the entire plural noun phrase. In standard or careful Persian, retain ـها with its ZWNJ.
The unreduced morphology is introduced on Regular Plural with ـها; this page adds the Tehran sound-and-register mapping.
Form Map
| Noun ending | Standard | Tehran colloquial | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| consonant | کتابها | کتابا | ه drops |
| consonant with raised vowel | مهمانها | مهمونا | vowel raising and plural reduction combine |
| final spoken ـه | بچهها | بچهها | this guide retains ها; its ه may be weak in rapid speech |
| final ـی | صندلیها | صندلیا | a glide separates the vowels in the colloquial form |
| specific object | کتابها را | کتابا رو | plural precedes object marker |
After Consonants: کتابها to کتابا
The dropped ه belongs to the plural suffix, not to the noun. The resulting long â directly follows the consonant. In informal writing this guide uses کتابا, without a ZWNJ before bare ا. Edited standard writing remains کتابها.
کتابا هنوز توی اون کارتنن.
ketâbâ hanuz tu-ye un kârton-an.
The books are still in that box. (informal, regional: Tehran)
دوستام امشب میان خونهمون.
dustâm emshab miyân khune-mun.
My friends are coming to our house tonight. (informal, regional: Tehran; colloquial دوستام corresponds to standard دوستهایم)
چراغا رو خاموش کردی؟
cherâghâ ro khâmush kardi?
Did you turn off the lights? (informal, regional: Tehran)
Possessive clitics can follow the reduced plural: دوستام، کتابات، حرفاش. Their vowel shapes also belong to the colloquial system; do not derive them by deleting arbitrary letters from standard spelling.
Combined Sound Changes
When a noun has the familiar lexical Tehran realization of ـان as ـون, that change can combine with plural reduction. Standard مهمانها and خیابانها therefore have colloquial مهمونا and خیابونا. This is not a general rule that raises every â near any nasal, and the output does not contain a special plural suffix ـونا.
مهمونا حدود ساعت هشت میرسن.
mehmunâ hodud-e sâ'at-e hasht mi-resan.
The guests will arrive around eight. (informal, regional: Tehran)
خیابونا بعد از بارون خلوت شدن.
khiyâbunâ ba'd az bârun khalvat shodan.
The streets became quiet after the rain. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Standard counterparts مهمانها، خیابانها، باران reveal the separate lexical and plural correspondences.
After Vowels: More Than One Outcome
Vowel-final nouns do not all behave alike. After the everyday final ـه of بچه and خونه, this guide retains written ها, although its ه may be weak in rapid speech. After final ـی, a glide commonly separates the vowels, giving explicitly colloquial forms such as صندلیا. After other vowels, speakers vary in how strongly they retain ه; full ـها is always the safe active choice when you are unsure. The noun itself may still be colloquial: standard خانهها corresponds to conversational خونهها.
بچهها تو حیاط بازی میکنن.
bachche-hâ tu hayât bâzi mi-konan.
The children are playing in the yard. (informal, regional: Tehran)
خونههای این کوچه خیلی قدیمیان.
khune-hâ-ye in kuche kheyli qadimi-an.
The houses on this street are very old. (informal, regional: Tehran; ها retained after خونه)
صندلیا رو بردیم تو اتاق کناری.
sandaliyâ ro bordim tu otâq-e kenâri.
We took the chairs into the next room. (strongly colloquial, regional: Tehran; final ـی supplies the glide before plural ـا)
Plurality Is Not Definiteness
Like standard ـها, colloquial ـا marks a plural set, but discourse determines whether the set is familiar. کتابا رو بیار refers to identifiable books because context plus رو selects them. چند تا کتاب خریدیم introduces a nonspecific set without رو.
چند تا لیوان واسه مهمونی خریدیم.
chand tâ livân vâse mehmuni kharidim.
We bought several glasses for the party. (informal; nonspecific quantified set)
لیوانا رو از روی میز جمع کن.
livânâ ro az ru-ye miz jam' kon.
Clear the glasses from the table. (informal; contextually identifiable plural object)
Do not teach ـا as English the. Persian expresses reference through demonstratives, context, object marking, and other noun-phrase resources.
Object Marker Sequencing
The order is noun + plural + possessive if present + object marker. Colloquial spelling may bind ـو to a simple host: کتابامو “my books” as object. A separate رو after a fuller noun phrase is also common.
عکسای سفرمونو به مادربزرگ نشون دادیم.
aksâ-ye safar-emun-o be mâdarbozorg neshun dâdim.
We showed our trip photos to Grandma. (informal, regional: Tehran; plural + possessor + object marker)
اون پروندههای قدیمی رو هنوز دور نریختن.
un parvande-hâ-ye qadimi ro hanuz dur na-rikhtan.
They still haven't thrown away those old files. (informal; vowel-final noun retains ها)
Standard–Colloquial Minimal Contrast
مهمانها کتابهایشان را روی میز گذاشتند.
mehmân-hâ ketâb-hâ-yeshân râ ru-ye miz gozâshtand.
The guests put their books on the table. (standard/careful)
مهمونا کتاباشونو رو میز گذاشتن.
mehmunâ ketâbâ-shun-o ru miz gozâshtan.
The guests put their books on the table. (informal, regional: Tehran)
The second coordinates vowel raising, plural reduction after consonants, possessive ـشون, object ـو, prepositional رو, and third-plural ـن.
Connected Dialogue
— کلیدا کجان؟ — گذاشتمشون کنار گلدونا. — کلیدای ماشینم اونجان؟ — آره، همشون اونجان.
— kelidâ kojân? — gozâshtam-eshun kenâr-e goldunâ. — kelidâ-ye mâshin-am unjân? — âre, hame-shun unjân.
— Where are the keys? — I put them beside the flowerpots. — Are my car keys there? — Yeah, they're all there. (informal, regional: Tehran)
Common Mistakes
1. Dropping ه after every noun
⚠️ بچها تو حیاطن.
bachche-â tu hayât-an.
The children are in the yard. This contracted spelling can occur in informal messages, but this guide uses بچهها after final ـه.
✅ بچهها توی حیاطن.
bachche-hâ tu-ye hayât-an.
The children are in the yard. (informal, regional: Tehran)
2. Writing reduced plural with a ZWNJ before ا
❌ کتابا رو آوردی؟
Incorrect spelling in this guide — reduced ـا attaches directly: کتابا.
✅ کتابا رو از ماشین آوردی؟
ketâbâ ro az mâshin âvardi?
Did you bring the books from the car? (informal, regional: Tehran)
3. Treating ـا as a definite article
⚠️ کتابا یعنی «آن کتابها».
ketâbâ ya'ni «ân ketâb-hâ».
‘Ketâbâ’ means ‘those books.’ This is a possible contextual reading, but ـا by itself marks plural number, not definiteness.
✅ یه کتابایی دیدم که شاید به دردت بخوره.
ye ketâbâ-yi didam ke shâyad be dard-at be-khore.
I saw some books that might be useful to you. (informal indefinite plural)
4. Carrying reduced spelling into a formal report
⚠️ پروندهها بررسی شدن و نتیجهها اعلام شدن.
parvande-hâ barrasi shodan va natije-hâ e'lâm shodan.
The files were reviewed and the results announced. Valid colloquial grammar, but mismatched to a formal report.
✅ پروندهها بررسی شدند و نتایج اعلام شدند.
parvande-hâ barrasi shodand va natâyej e'lâm shodand.
The files were reviewed and the results announced. (formal standard)
