Irregular Spoken Verb Stems

Everyday Tehran Persian uses several high-frequency verb bases that cannot be produced safely by deleting whatever looks silent in standard spelling. Standard می‌روم، می‌گویم، می‌خواهم، می‌دهم، می‌آیم، می‌شوم، می‌توانم correspond to conversational می‌رم، می‌گم، می‌خوام، می‌دم، میام، می‌شم، می‌تونم. The imperative بگذار has the established short form بذار. Review how the written stem functions before person endings on The Present Stem.

These are normal (informal, regional: Tehran) paradigms, not defective versions of standard verbs. Learn a conversational base together with its person endings, subjunctive, and imperative. Productive endings then extend across the stored base; analogy alone cannot tell you which base speakers actually use.

A Memorization Map

InfinitiveCareful standard “I...”Tehran “I...”Related colloquial form
رفتنمی‌روممی‌رمبرم، برو
گفتنمی‌گویممی‌گمبگم، بگو
خواستنمی‌خواهممی‌خوامبخوام
دادنمی‌دهممی‌دمبدم، بده
آمدنمی‌آیممیامبیام، بیا
شدنمی‌شوممی‌شمبشم، بشو
توانستنمی‌توانممی‌تونمبتونم
گذاشتنمی‌گذارممی‌ذارمبذار

The table is a two-way lexicon. Conversational می‌گم must retrieve standard می‌گویم in formal writing; می‌خوام must retrieve می‌خواهم. The goal is not to replace one system permanently with the other.

من دیگه می‌رم؛ فردا صبح زود کار دارم.

man dige mi-ram; fardâ sobh zud kâr dâram.

I’m going now; I have work early tomorrow morning. (informal, regional: Tehran)

بعدا بهت می‌گم دقیقا چی شد.

ba'dan behet mi-gam daqiqan chi shod.

I’ll tell you later exactly what happened. (informal, regional: Tehran)

💡
Memorize a triangle: infinitive, standard present, and colloquial present. Then add the conversational subjunctive or imperative. One isolated shortened form is not enough to support a paradigm.

Endings Still Identify Person

Once a colloquial base is known, the regular conversational endings remain visible. Compare می‌گم، می‌گی، می‌گه، می‌گیم، می‌گین، می‌گن. The base گـ is short, but ـم، ـی، ـه، ـیم، ـین، ـن continue to distinguish six persons.

Personگفتنخواستنشدن
Iمی‌گممی‌خواممی‌شم
you singularمی‌گیمی‌خوایمی‌شی
he/she/itمی‌گهمی‌خوادمی‌شه
weمی‌گیممی‌خوایممی‌شیم
you plural/politeمی‌گینمی‌خواینمی‌شین
theyمی‌گنمی‌خوانمی‌شن

می‌خواد and میاد retain a final د in common Tehran speech, unlike a fully regular ـد → ـه mapping. This is exactly why high-frequency paradigms need lexical attention. Likewise, spelling practices vary in messages; this guide keeps the می‌ boundary visible except in conventional میام, whose written shape transparently represents the hiatus-free spoken form.

تو می‌خوای کدوم فیلمو ببینی؟

to mi-khây kodum film-o be-bini?

Which movie do you want to see? (informal, regional: Tehran)

اونا می‌گن مسیر شمال شلوغه.

unâ mi-gan masir-e shomâl sholugh-e.

They say the northern route is crowded. (informal, regional: Tehran)

اگه عجله کنیم، تا هفت آماده می‌شیم.

age ajale konim, tâ haft âmâde mi-shim.

If we hurry, we’ll be ready by seven. (informal, regional: Tehran)

آمدن, دادن, and رفتن

Conversational آمدن gives میام، میای، میاد، میایم، میاین، میان. The same lexical family supplies بیام، بیای، بیاد in the subjunctive and بیا in the singular imperative. Do not insert the standard written present base آیـ into some slots while shortening others at random.

امشب میام خونه‌تون و کتابو میارم.

emshab miyâm khune-tun va ketâb-o miyâram.

I’ll come to your place tonight and bring the book. (informal, regional: Tehran)

می‌خوای زودتر بیام کمکت؟

mi-khây zudtar biyâm komak-et?

Do you want me to come earlier and help you? (informal, regional: Tehran)

دادن uses conversational دِهـ in forms such as می‌دم، می‌ده، می‌دن, with بده as the singular imperative. رفتن has the very compact series می‌رم... but keeps برو in the imperative.

رسید خریدتو فردا بهت می‌دم.

resid-e kharid-et-o fardâ behet mi-dam.

I’ll give you your purchase receipt tomorrow. (informal, regional: Tehran)

اگه خسته‌ای، برو خونه؛ من کارو تموم می‌کنم.

age khaste-i, boro khune; man kâr-o tamum mi-konam.

If you’re tired, go home; I’ll finish the work. (informal, regional: Tehran)

توانستن and Vowel Raising

Standard توانستن has conversational تونستن and present می‌تونم، می‌تونی، می‌تونه.... This family reflects â-to-u raising near a nasal as well as colloquial endings. It therefore belongs both to the stored high-frequency inventory and to a broader sound correspondence.

امروز نمی‌تونم بیام؛ باید تا دیر وقت کار کنم.

emruz nemi-tunam biyâm; bâyad tâ dir-vaqt kâr konam.

I can’t come today; I have to work late. (informal, regional: Tehran)

می‌تونین این جعبه رو چند دقیقه نگه دارین؟

mi-tunin in ja'be ro chand daqiqe negah dârin?

Could you hold this box for a few minutes? (polite informal Tehran speech)

بذار Is a Stored Imperative

بذار is the established colloquial singular imperative of گذاشتن. It can mean literal “put/leave” or serve as “let me/let us”: بذار ببینم “let me see.” Its family includes می‌ذارم، می‌ذاره، می‌ذارن. Keep Persian ذ; similarity of sound does not justify respelling the word with ز in edited teaching material.

بذار کیفمو اینجا بذارم؛ الان برمی‌گردم.

bezâr keyf-am-o injâ bezâram; alân bar-mi-gardam.

Let me leave my bag here; I’ll be right back. (informal, regional: Tehran)

بذار اول آدرس دقیقو پیدا کنیم، بعد راه بیفتیم.

bezâr avval âdres-e daqiq-o peydâ konim, ba'd râh bioftim.

Let’s first find the exact address, then set off. (informal, regional: Tehran)

One Register at a Time

Standard می‌خواهم توضیح بدهم is right for a prepared presentation; می‌خوام توضیح بدم is right for relaxed conversation. Neither is universally superior. A coherent switch affects several high-frequency choices while leaving words without established counterparts unchanged.

می‌خوام بگم چرا این تصمیمو گرفتم.

mi-khâm begam cherâ in tasmim-o gereftam.

I want to explain why I made this decision. (informal, regional: Tehran)

می‌خواهم توضیح دهم چرا این تصمیم را گرفته‌ام.

mi-khâham towzih daham cherâ in tasmim râ gerefte-am.

I would like to explain why I made this decision. (formal written standard)

Common Mistakes

1. Creating a short form by arbitrary deletion

❌ من هر روز به اداره می‌رو.

Incorrect first-person present — bare می‌رو lacks the required first-person ending ـم.

✅ من بیشتر روزا با مترو می‌رم اداره.

man bishtar-e ruzâ bâ metro mi-ram edâre.

Most days I take the metro to the office. (informal, regional: Tehran)

2. Guessing person from the pronoun while ignoring the ending

❌ من می‌گه فردا میام.

Incorrect — first-person من requires می‌گم; می‌گه is third singular.

✅ من می‌گم فردا صبح میام.

man mi-gam fardâ sobh miyâm.

I’m saying I’ll come tomorrow morning. (informal, regional: Tehran)

3. Putting colloquial stems into formal prose

⚠️ بدین‌وسیله می‌خوام مراتب تشکر خود را اعلام نمایم.

bedin-vasile mi-khâm marâteb-e tashakkor-e khod râ e'lâm namâyam.

I hereby wanna express my thanks. Grammatical components, but colloquial می‌خوام clashes with a ceremonial written frame.

✅ می‌خواهم از همکاری شما صمیمانه تشکر کنم.

mi-khâham az hamkâri-ye shomâ samimâne tashakkor konam.

I would like to thank you sincerely for your cooperation. (formal standard)

4. Treating full Iranian forms as foreign

⚠️ هرکس «می‌گویم» بگوید، حتما غیرایرانی حرف می‌زند.

har-kas ‘mi-guyam’ be-guyad, hatman gheyr-e Irâni harf mi-zanad.

Anyone who says می‌گویم must be speaking non-Iranian Persian. Grammatical sentence, but false: careful Iranian Persian also uses the full form.

✅ در گفت‌وگوی دوستانه می‌گم و در سخنرانی رسمی می‌گویم.

dar goft-o-gu-ye dustâne mi-gam va dar sokhanrâni-ye rasmi mi-guyam.

In friendly conversation I say می‌گم, and in a formal speech I say می‌گویم.
