A Persian clause with شدن can have three closely related analyses. It may be a syntactic passive with a suppressed actor, an anticausative that presents a change without an actor, or part of a perfect whose most relevant meaning is the resulting state. در باز شد can mean “the door opened” or “the door was opened”; در باز شده است can report the prior opening or emphasize that the door is now open.
English translation cannot settle the analysis, because English itself alternates among passive, inchoative, and adjectival wording. Persian speakers combine lexical pairing, agent-oriented modifiers, causes, aspect, and discourse expectations. No single test works in every case.
Three readings, one affected subject
| Reading | Core interpretation | Strong clues |
|---|---|---|
| passive | an external actor performs an action on the patient | agent phrase, deliberate manner, institutional procedure |
| anticausative | the patient undergoes a change without an asserted actor | خودبهخود، بر اثر باد, spontaneous-event context |
| result state | the post-event condition is discourse-prominent | stative copula, current-state adverbs, contrast with prior condition |
In all three, the affected entity is subject and therefore takes no object را. The difference lies in event structure and discourse, not surface case marking.
پنجره با وزش باد باز شد.
panjare bâ vazesh-e bâd bâz shod.
The window opened in the wind. (neutral anticausative; natural cause, no agent asserted)
پنجره به دستور آتشنشانها باز شد.
panjare be dastur-e âtash-neshân-hâ bâz shod.
The window was opened on the firefighters' orders. (passive-like; deliberate external action)
در باز است؛ میتوانی داخل بیایی.
dar bâz ast; mi-tavâni dâkhel biyâyi.
The door is open; you can come inside. (result state with copula, no opening event asserted)
Lexical pairing is the first diagnostic
Some کردن/شدن pairs lexicalize a causative alternation: باز کردن / باز شدن، گرم کردن / گرم شدن، تمام کردن / تمام شدن. The شدن member can naturally describe an uncaused or background-caused change. Calling every such clause a passive misses this lexical relationship.
یخ روی پلهها زیر آفتاب آب شد.
yakh ru-ye pelle-hâ zir-e âftâb âb shod.
The ice on the steps melted in the sun. (anticausative lexical change)
By contrast, simple transitive verbs such as نوشتن lack an ordinary spontaneous intransitive partner meaning “come to write.” نامه نوشته شد therefore strongly supports passive analysis: a writer is conceptually present even if unmentioned.
نامه با دستخط ناشناس نوشته شده بود.
nâme bâ dast-khatt-e nâshenâs neveshte shode bud.
The letter had been written in an unfamiliar hand. (passive pluperfect; an implicit writer)
This diagnostic is lexical, not merely formal. Many compounds form their passive by replacing active کردن with شدن, so بررسی شد can be passive even without a visible participle. Learn the argument frame of the whole predicate.
Agent-oriented material versus natural causes
An explicit human agent with توسط or از سوی favors a passive. So do adverbs that presuppose intention or careful control, such as عمداً in ordinary spelling—but this guide avoids Arabic-style case endings in learner targets and uses از روی عمد instead. A physical cause introduced by با or بر اثر is compatible with an anticausative.
فایل از سوی مدیر سامانه حذف شد.
fâyl az su-ye modir-e sâmâne hazf shod.
The file was deleted by the system administrator. (formal passive; explicit agent)
فایل بر اثر خرابی حافظه از بین رفت.
fâyl bar asar-e kharâbi-ye hâfeze az beyn raft.
The file was lost because of memory failure. (neutral nonagentive event; lexical از بین رفتن)
برچسب از روی عمد کنده شد.
bar-chasb az ru-ye amd kande shod.
The label was deliberately pulled off. (passive; intentional-manner phrase)
World knowledge remains defeasible. A door can open in the wind or be opened by a person; a file normally needs some process to delete it, but software can supply the external cause. Diagnostics shift probabilities rather than mechanically changing morphology.
Eventive شد, stative است, and perfect شده است
The clearest state/event contrast often replaces شدن with the copula. در بسته است says “the door is closed,” while در بسته شد reports a closing transition. در بسته شده است is a present perfect: it asserts or presupposes a prior transition and commonly licenses a current-result inference.
مسیر شمالی بسته شد، اما راه فرعی هنوز باز است.
masir-e shomâli baste shod, ammâ râh-e far'i hanuz bâz ast.
The northern route was closed, but the side road is still open. (event versus state contrast)
در پشتی بسته شده است؛ کلید را از نگهبان بگیر.
dar-e poshti baste shode ast; kelid râ az negahbân be-gir.
The back door has been closed; get the key from the guard. (perfect event with a salient current result)
The perfect remains compatible with event modifiers: ساعت هشت بسته شده است can report when the closing occurred. A pure adjective-like state resists some event-oriented additions. This is why the continuum cannot always be divided by one English paraphrase. See Result State versus Perfect Event for the wider perfect system.
Agreement does not disambiguate the reading
Patient subjects control ordinary Persian agreement in both passives and anticausatives. Human plurals normally take plural agreement; inanimate plurals allow singular collective agreement in formal prose. Agreement can identify the patient as subject, but cannot reveal whether an actor exists conceptually.
دو کودک در ازدحام از هم جدا شدند.
do kudak dar ezdehâm az ham jodâ shodand.
Two children became separated in the crowd. (neutral; plural patient/undergoer subjects, causation left open)
A diagnostic dialogue
— شیشه شکست یا کسی آن را شکست؟ — خودبهخود ترک خورد و بعد شکست.
— shishe shekast yâ kasi ân râ shekast? — khod-be-khod tarak khord-o ba'd shekast.
— Did the glass break, or did someone break it? — It cracked by itself and then broke. (neutral; causation is explicitly tested)
Persian شکستن itself alternates transitively and intransitively, so identical past شکست can represent either valency. The presence of کسی آن را in the question exposes the transitive analysis.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding را to the patient subject
❌ در را ناگهان باز شد.
Incorrect — in باز شدن, the changing door is subject, not a direct object.
✅ در انبار با فشار باد باز شد.
dar-e anbâr bâ feshâr-e bâd bâz shod.
The storeroom door opened under the wind's pressure.
2. Calling every شدن compound a passive
❌ هوا سرد شد همیشه یعنی هوا سرد کرده شد.
Incorrect analysis — سرد شدن ordinarily describes a change of state, not a passive of سرد کردن.
✅ پس از باران هوا خنک شد.
pas az bârân havâ khonak shod.
After the rain, the weather became cool.
3. Treating a result state as a finite passive event
❌ پنجره باز است یعنی کسی همین حالا آن را باز کرد.
Faulty inference — باز است describes the state and does not assert a recent opening event.
✅ پنجره از صبح باز است.
panjare az sobh bâz ast.
The window has been open since morning. (state)
4. Assuming a با phrase always names an agent
❌ با باد یعنی باد عامل انسانی جمله است.
Incorrect — با فشار باد names a physical cause, not a human agent.
✅ شاخهی خشک با وزش باد شکست.
shâkhe-ye khoshk bâ vazesh-e bâd shekast.
The dry branch broke in the wind. (nonagentive cause)
Key Takeaways
- Passive and anticausative clauses both make the affected participant subject; را cannot distinguish them.
- Lexical pairing, agent phrases, intentional manner, natural causes, and event-time compatibility provide converging diagnostics.
- شد asserts a transition, است directly describes a state, and شده است is a perfect that often highlights a current result.
- Some ambiguity is real and contextually useful; do not force one analysis where Persian leaves causation open.
