Persian has no single all-purpose equivalent of English agentless it is done or generic you. A writer may choose a شدن passive, an active third-person plural with a null human subject, an impersonal modal such as میتوان or میشود, a middle or anticausative construction, or a nominalization. Each strategy suppresses the actor differently and creates a different register.
The best choice follows from communicative purpose. A passive promotes the affected participant; a generic plural leaves an unnamed human actor grammatically active; an impersonal modal presents an action as possible or permitted; a middle describes a characteristic disposition; a nominalization turns the event into an institutionally managed process. English often translates all five with passive wording, but their Persian syntax is not interchangeable.
Five ways to background agency
| Strategy | Persian frame | What becomes prominent | Typical register |
|---|---|---|---|
| canonical passive | درخواست بررسی شد | affected participant and event | neutral/formal |
| generic third plural | درخواست را بررسی کردند | event with unnamed human actors | neutral/conversational |
| impersonal modal | میتوان درخواست داد | possibility, permission, or procedure | formal-neutral |
| middle/anticausative | این در راحت باز میشود | disposition or spontaneous change | all registers |
| nominalization | ورود ممنوع است | rule, process, or abstract event | formal/administrative |
The شدن passive: affected participant as subject
The canonical passive promotes the active object's referent to subject and builds the predicate with a lexical participle or passive compound plus شدن. The affected subject controls agreement; the actor can remain absent because it is unknown, irrelevant, or deliberately backgrounded.
نسخهی نهایی قرارداد صبح امروز امضا شد.
noskhe-ye nehâyi-ye qarârdâd sobh-e emruz emzâ shod.
The final version of the contract was signed this morning. (formal-neutral; eventive passive)
تمام نمونهها در دمای ثابت نگهداری میشوند.
tamâm-e nemune-hâ dar damâ-ye sâbet negahdâri mi-shavand.
All samples are kept at a constant temperature. (formal/academic; habitual passive)
This construction is natural when the affected item already organizes the paragraph. It can become bureaucratically heavy if repeated where ordinary Persian would simply leave a human subject unspoken. Full passive paradigms are mapped on Passive across the Tense and Mood System.
Generic third plural: active syntax, unnamed people
Persian often uses a third-person plural active verb with no overt آنها. The missing subject means contextually relevant staff, officials, people in general, or some unidentified human actors. A specific affected noun remains an object and therefore normally keeps را.
در ورودی ساختمان کارت شناسایی میخواهند.
dar vorudi-ye sâkhtemân kârt-e shenâsâyi mi-khâhand.
They ask for identification at the building entrance. (neutral standard; generic staff)
این خیابان را شبها میبندند.
in khiyâbân râ shab-hâ mi-bandand.
This street is closed at night. (neutral; active arbitrary third plural, naturally passive in English)
The second sentence is not a passive: خیابان را is still an object, and plural میبندند belongs to unspoken human agents. Compare passive این خیابان شبها بسته میشود, which makes the street the subject. Conversation often favors the active version because it avoids a formal passive without identifying anyone.
میگن اینجا تا نیمهشب غذا سرو میکنن.
mi-gan in-jâ tâ nime-shab ghazâ serv mi-konan.
They say food is served here until midnight. (informal, regional: Tehran; two generic third-plural verbs)
Formal writing uses میگویند، میکنند; the reduced forms belong to coherent Tehran speech. The choice between active and passive is developed on Avoiding the Passive with Third-Plural Actives.
Impersonal میتوان and میشود: possible, permissible, feasible
Invariant میتوان (formal-neutral/academic) and impersonal میشود (neutral, especially spoken) do not merely hide an actor; they modalize the event. Both can combine with the short infinitive, which has the shape of a third-singular past stem but no personal subject ending in this construction.
از این مسیر میتوان بدون عبور از مرکز شهر به فرودگاه رسید.
az in masir mi-tavân bedun-e obur az markaz-e shahr be forudgâh resid.
One can reach the airport by this route without crossing the city center. (formal-neutral; generic feasibility)
بعد از ثبت نهایی دیگر نمیشود اطلاعات را تغییر داد.
ba'd az sabt-e nehâyi digar nemi-shavad ettelâ'ât râ taghyir dâd.
After final submission, the information can no longer be changed. (formal-neutral; impersonal impossibility)
The object اطلاعات را remains inside the impersonal clause; there is no promoted passive subject. In informal Tehran speech, the second frame becomes نمیشه ... تغییر داد. Do not pluralize frozen میتوان or impersonal میشود according to the number of imagined actors.
Middle and anticausative readings
A middle sentence describes how an entity characteristically behaves under a generic action: این پارچه راحت شسته میشود “this fabric washes easily.” An anticausative describes a change without presenting an external causer: در باز شد “the door opened.” Both can resemble passives because شدن appears, but their discourse purpose differs.
این روکش با یک دستمال مرطوب راحت تمیز میشود.
in rukesh bâ yek dastmâl-e martub râhat tamiz mi-shavad.
This cover cleans easily with a damp cloth. (neutral; dispositional middle reading)
با وزش باد، پنجرهی نیمهباز ناگهان بسته شد.
bâ vazesh-e bâd, panjare-ye nime-bâz nâgahân baste shod.
With a gust of wind, the half-open window suddenly closed. (neutral; spontaneous-change reading, not a human-agent passive)
A true passive normally remains compatible with an implicit intentional actor. A middle expresses a general disposition, while an anticausative presents causation as internal or leaves it outside the clause. Some شدن strings are genuinely ambiguous; the diagnostic is not form alone but event type, adverbs, and context.
Nominalization: suppressing the clause itself
Administrative Persian frequently replaces a finite agentive clause with an action noun or infinitive: ورود ممنوع است, ثبت درخواست الزامی است, بررسی پرونده ادامه دارد. This does more than omit the actor: it packages the event as a rule, stage, or institutional process.
ورود افراد بدون کارت به بخش بایگانی ممنوع است.
vorud-e afrâd-e bedun-e kârt be bakhsh-e bâygâni mamnu' ast.
Entry to the archives section without a card is prohibited. (formal/administrative nominalization)
بررسی درخواستهای ناقص تا دریافت مدارک جدید متوقف میماند.
barrasi-ye darkhâst-hâ-ye nâqes tâ daryâft-e madârek-e jadid motavaqqef mi-mânad.
The review of incomplete applications remains suspended until new documents are received. (formal/bureaucratic; process as nominal subject)
Nominalization is efficient in headings, regulations, and workflow descriptions, but a long chain of action nouns can hide responsibility. Where accountability matters, restore an agentive clause: کمیته درخواستها را بررسی میکند is clearer than several nested nominalizations.
A register-sensitive comparison
— ماشینم رو کجا ببرم؟ — سر همین خیابان تعمیرش میکنن.
— mâshin-am ro kojâ be-baram? — sar-e hamin khiyâbân ta'mir-ash mi-konan.
‘Where should I take my car?’ ‘They repair it at the end of this street.’ (informal, regional: Tehran; generic plural is natural)
خودروهای آسیبدیده پس از ارزیابی اولیه تعمیر خواهند شد.
khodro-hâ-ye âsib-dide pas az arzyâbi-ye avvaliye ta'mir khâhand shod.
The damaged vehicles will be repaired after an initial assessment. (formal institutional notice; passive)
The two examples can describe similar work, but they are not stylistic duplicates. The dialogue evokes local mechanics as unnamed people; the notice tracks vehicles through an official process.
Common Mistakes
1. Mixing object marking with passive agreement
❌ فرمها را بررسی میشوند.
Incorrect — را marks فرمها as an object, while میشوند tries to make them a passive subject.
✅ فرمهای ناقص دوباره بررسی میشوند.
form-hâ-ye nâqes dobâre barrasi mi-shavand.
The incomplete forms are reviewed again.
2. Treating a generic plural as a passive
❌ این بسته را فاعل جملهی گذاشتند است.
Incorrect analysis — in این بسته را گذاشتند, the package is an object and the null human plural is the subject.
✅ این بسته را صبح کنار نگهبانی گذاشتهاند.
in baste râ sobh kenâr-e negahbâni gozâshte-and.
This package was left beside the security desk this morning. (active third plural)
3. Pluralizing an invariant impersonal modal
❌ میتوانند بدون معرفی شخص خاص وارد شد.
Incorrect for an agentless generic reading — personal میتوانند introduces a plural subject, while وارد شد is impersonal.
✅ از در شرقی میتوان بدون هماهنگی قبلی وارد شد.
az dar-e sharqi mi-tavân bedun-e hamâhangi-ye qabli vâred shod.
One can enter through the east door without prior coordination.
4. Giving a nominalized rule passive plural agreement
❌ ورود افراد متفرقه ممنوع میشوند.
Incorrect — nominalized ورود is singular and ممنوع است is the required predicate; میشوند cannot agree with افراد inside the ezafe phrase.
✅ ورود افراد متفرقه به اتاق کنترل ممنوع است.
vorud-e afrâd-e motefarreqe be otâq-e kontrol mamnu' ast.
Unauthorized persons are prohibited from entering the control room. (formal rule with a nominalized subject)
Key Takeaways
- Persian backgrounds agents through several constructions rather than one universal passive.
- A شدن passive promotes the affected participant; a subjectless third plural remains grammatically active and keeps را on a specific object.
- Impersonal میتوان/میشود expresses possibility or permission, not merely hidden agency.
- Middle and anticausative readings profile disposition or spontaneous change; nominalization packages action as a process or rule.
- Choose by information structure and register, and restore the agent whenever responsibility is communicatively important.
